Book Description
The Science Times journalists explain the brain.
Customer Reviews:
A revised classic -- clear and fascinating.......2003-12-12
Each Tuesday I eagerly turn to the NY Times Science section, hoping to find a new article on brain science. The Times articles on this wide and important subject are among the most clearly written and captivating in all of science today. They seem to follow Einstein's dicta that you should be able to explain any concept -- including relativity -- in terms that a ten-year old child can not only understand, but be interested in. These articles will provide a solid foundation for anyone interested in this wonderful and positive field, especially when combined with a decent text on neuroanatomy to provide a map of what's going on. If more people wrote technical science as clearly and as cheerily as Ms Blakeslee, Ms Brody, or Mr Goleman, I doubt we would be worried about scientific literacy in this country. This book is a wonderful gift for kids from one to ninety-three, and I'd recommend it highly.
A Collection of the Best.......2002-10-30
The Science team at the NEW YORK TIMES are working hard to keep up with the expanding knowledge of our most vital organ - our brains. This is a collection of their articles from the Decade of the Brain, ending in 2000. The vibrancy of the decade is captured for all who read these stories. For many years, the 1990's will be studied as a time of unparalleled cooperation between scientists, society, and the media. Leading the areas studied will be brain research. The Science staff of the NEW YORK TIMES has been complimented repeatedly in private and public statements by many neuroscientists. Society will continue to look to them for insight on the next generation of investigations.

Book Description
As numerous historical documents - on fireclay, papyrus, or paper - testify, alkaloids, nitrogen contining natural substances, have been companions of mankind from ancient time. Valued as drugs and stimulants, some species are also feared because of their addictive potential, and often it seems impossible to distinguish these effects unambiguously. The chemistry of alkaloids has been captivating chemists for ages and generations. This is the first comprehensive reference work providing a concise overview of structure, properties, and history of these unique and fascinating substances!
The volume is organised into three main sections. Part 1 examines the chemically relevant aspects by means of carefully selected examples. After a structural classification, structure elucidation (including common pitfalls) is discussed. Moreover, chiroptical properties and synthetic pathways are detailed. Part 2 is devoted to biological and biochemical aspects. It rationalizes chemotaxonomy and biogenesis by means of examples (indole and 1-benzyl isoquinoline alkaloids) and presents details about the functionality of several alkaloids produced by plants and animals. Part 3 finally describes the cultural and historical significance of the most important alkaloid sources. Exciting anecdotes and historical reports illuminate the use of hemlock, ergot, opium, tobacco, coffee, and cinchona, to name only a few.
The unique and comprehensive explanation of the most important features of alkaloids makes this book a compendium valuable not only for experts but also for the layman interested in pharmacy.

Book Description
This series is world-renowned as the leading compilation of current reviews of this vast field.
Internationally acclaimed for more than forty years, The Alkaloids: Chemistry and Biology, founded by the late Professor R. H. F. Manske, continues to provide outstanding coverage of the rapidly expanding field of the chemotaxonomy, structure elucidation, synthesis, biosynthesis, and biology of all classes of alkaloids from higher and lower plants, marine organisms, and various terrestrial animals. Each volume provides, through its distinguished authors, up-to-date and detailed coverage of particular classes or sources of alkaloids.
This, the 58th volume in the series presents two quite different aspects of alkaloids. The first of the two chapters reviews the substantial progress made on the biotransformations of various classes of alkaloids and examines the enzymes systems involved in this process. Such studies are proving very important in the consideration of how alkaloids can be used in the future as medicinal or biological agents. The second chapter presents a comprehensive review of the known polyamine alkaloids based on their biogenesis and additionally provides overviews of their detailed structural analysis, their synthesis, biosynthesis and biology.
* The 58th volume in this series of essential reference works
* Written by leading experts in the field
* An essential research tool for anyone working with alkaloids in chemistry or biology

Book Description
Alkaloids are a major group of natural products derived from a wide variety of organisms and are widely used as medicinal and biological agents. This series is world-renowned as the leading compilation of current reviews of this vast field.
Volume 56 presents the Proceedings from the First International Conference on Ibogaines, held in November of 1999 at New York University's School of Medicine. In essence, it presents significant new data on neurobiological, clinical, sociocultural, and policy aspects of ibogaine.
Ibogaine is a natural product derived from the bark of the root of the African shrub Tabernathe iboga. It has a history of use as a medicinal and ceremonial agent in West Central Africa, and has been alleged to be effective as a treatment for substance dependence. The study of Ibogaine may shed light on the neurobiology of addiction and lead to the development of new medication for the treatment of addiction.
Currently, there is lack of formal approval for the use of ibogaine, and the demand of the addicts themselves has led to a distinctive unofficial network which has provided ibogaine treatment in non-medical settings. If critical safety concerns can be adequately addressed, ibogaine may provide an inexpensive and practical treatment approach, well adapted to environments where resources are severely limited and there is pressing need for clinical services for heroin addicts, such as Eastern Europe.

Book Description
With emphasis on modern techniques, Numerical Methods for Differential Equations: A Computational Approach covers the development and application of methods for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Some of the methods are extended to cover partial differential equations. All techniques covered in the text are on a program disk included with the book, and are written in Fortran 90. These programs are ideal for students, researchers, and practitioners because they allow for straightforward application of the numerical methods described in the text. The code is easily modified to solve new systems of equations. Numerical Methods for Differential Equations: A Computational Approach also contains a reliable and inexpensive global error code for those interested in global error estimation. This is a valuable text for students, who will find the derivations of the numerical methods extremely helpful and the programs themselves easy to use. It is also an excellent reference and source of software for researchers and practitioners who need computer solutions to differential equations.
Book Description
This considerably extended and completely revised second edition incorporates many new developments in the thriving field of numerical methods for singularly perturbed differential equations. It provides a thorough foundation for the numerical analysis and solution of these problems, which model many physical phenomena whose solutions exhibit layers. The book focuses on linear convection-diffusion equations and on nonlinear flow problems that appear in computational fluid dynamics. It offers a comprehensive overview of suitable numerical methods while emphasizing those with realistic error estimates. The book should be useful for scientists requiring effective numerical methods for singularly perturbed differential equations.
Book Description
The inspiration for three films and several operas, this classic of French literature is set in Regency Paris and Louisiana around 1720. A tragic love story, it's also an epic adventure story with three infidelities, three escapes, three abductions and two murders. The action spans two continents and a social range extending from the aristocracy to the social outcast, from pillars of the establishment to pimps and prostitutes. Manon Lescaut's ambiguous love story has a transcendent significance: Is it a cautionary tale, warning of the dangers to which passion, blindly followed, can lead? Or does it illustrate the redemptive power of love? After all, Des Grieux's perseverance in his devotion to Manon eventually brings about a profound change of heart in her and seems to make possible a lasting happiness based on deep mutual affection. The ambiguity persists to the end, when death snatches that happiness away.
Customer Reviews:
Great Novel.......2001-11-23
Great book. The best of what French literature has to offer. A story of deceit, love, devotion and dedication.
Classic For A Reason.......2000-11-21
The Abbe Prevost was the first translator of Richardson's novels in France, as well as a precursor of the Romantic movement. This tale was the inspiration for two famous operas (Massenet and Puccini) as well as a forerunner of many formulaic love stories that came after. One has to remember that this was written in the earlry part of the 18th Century, and there was not any formula before it, at least in terms of the heroine. Manon is the anti-heroine, the woman-in-red, the Eve that gives her partner over to the fates as a result of her easily-compromised sensibility.
She can't turn down her creature comforts, even when it means sacrificing her "true love," her Romeo, for an older, but more solvent, lover, in instance after instance.
Manon is one of the first unsympathetic heroines in literature (let's forget about Eve if we can) , a precursor of Emma Bovary in many respects. Let's also remember that she appears in during the , "golden age" of sentimental fiction in France and Europe generally (the ealry 1700s) . Women are depicted in this era as archetypically virtuous and angelic, or unambiguously sexual (thinking particularly of the late Restoration English stage). What we have in Manon is an amalgam, neither entirely saint, nor entirely sinner. She is the Madonna and the Magdaleine, part angel, part succubus, but an entirely new persona on the European literary stage. This is the reason that she had such an impression on the European artistic imagination. She represents a new dichotomy, a new figure that represents what Henry Adams would have suggested as a representation of the sacred and the profane, the mud and the cathedral.
"Girl from Wrong Side of Town Jinxes Silver Spooner".......2000-04-20
Many years ago I read the classic Chinese novel "Chin Ping Mei" in which overindulgence in sex, wine, and food occurs so regularly that by the end of the hundreds of pages, the reader is glutted and uninterested in more. This, people say, was the Buddhist message of the novel-that the sensual, material world is meaningless. MANON LESCAUT reminded me of that novel because the single moralizing theme-the wasted life of a talented young aristocrat who falls madly in love with a girl of dubious character-dominates so completely that nothing else really matters. The various characters, while potentially interesting, are never built up much, due to subordination to the moral lesson. No matter how many times the beautiful Manon betrays her impetuous lover, he forgives her and indulges in his passion more than ever. His father and friends despair. Jail, murder, betrayal, gambling, prostitution, and eventual exile are only some of the results this passion delivers. The denouement of the novel occurs in far-off New Orleans, about which, it seemed to me, the author had absolutely no idea. An opera was later written based on this minor classic of French literature. I could not say that it is a wonderful piece of writing, nor that many readers will thrill to its ups and downs. You can read it in a short while; it will hold your attention and you will have the satisfaction of being able to say you read it. But, at the end of the day, French literature offers a lot more than MANON LESCAUT.
A confused girl..........1999-07-29
This novel is interesting, yet extremely frustrating for the reader. Prevost cannot decide, or rather leaves it to the reader to decide, how to define Manon: a confused girl, or a manipulative prostitute. In doing so, I felt that Manon's character was at some points ambiguous and not as fully developed as I would have liked. It's worth reading, but it is not an EXCITING attention grabbing story.
Book Description
A comprehensive guide to Puccini's MANON LESCAUT, featuring insightful and in depth Commentary and Analysis, a complete, newly translated Libretto with Italian/English side-by side, and over 35 music highlight examples.
Book Description
'The sweetness of her glance - or rather, my evil star already in its ascendant and drawing me to my ruin - did not allow me to hesitate for a moment' So begins the story of Manon Lescaut, a tale of passion and betrayal, of delinquency and misalliance, which moves from early eighteenth-century Paris - with its theatres, assemblies, and gaming-houses - via prison and deportation to a tragic denouement in the treeless wastes of Louisiana. It is one of the great love stories, and also one of the most enigmatic: how reliable a witness is Des Grieux, Manon's lover, whose tale he narrates? Is Manon a thief and a whore, the image of love itself, or a thoroughly modern woman? Prevost is careful to leave the ambiguities unresolved, and to lay bare the disorders of passion. This new translation includes the vignette and eight illustrations that were approved by Prevost and first published in the edition of 1753.
Customer Reviews:
extremely--I-don't-know-what.......2007-06-27
This novel was originally presented as an autobiographical novel, but certain elements do not seem true to life.
--The hero falls in love at first sight, and the two continue to remember each other until the bitter end.
--The heroine arouses the passion of 6 men through no effort on her own part.
--The hero and heroine live an irresponsible lifestyle without ever putting in a single day of hard work, yet their friends continue to support them without a word of complaint.
--The hero and heroine escape to a sandy wasteland within hiking distance of New Orleans. The novelist could never have been there because there is no such place.
This novel aroused operatic settings by 3 composers.
How, I don't know.
It's not the translator's fault. She provides a helpful introduction and helpful footnotes.

Customer Reviews:
Great as a libertine novel or as a love story.......2005-06-11
I read this book, unsurprisingly, for a class. I'm not a huge fan of 18th century novels...or libertine novels...or love stories- but I did love this book.
It's about the son of an aristocrat (or noble?), the Chevalier des Grieux, who meets and quickly falls in love with a prostitute who, incidentally, stands for everything Des Grieux does not: pleasure, capitalism, the moment, etc. True to form as a man of nobility values, he sacrifices everything to be with her, falling into a life of crime and striving to be as libertine as possible while ironically still trying to possess her and suppress her spirit- made evident in witty phrases like "mon infidele" and more conspicuously so by the fact that Manon's voice is never heard in this book. We view her personality through his eyes and never learn even basic things like what she looks like.
All in all, a fun read, but read this one in french if you can and read it carefully- it lacks quotation marks so it's easy to fail to make the distinction between dialogue and narration, an annoying problem for someone like me whose french isn't exactly spectacular.

Book Description
A ground–breaking novel of passion and immortality,
Manon Lescaut is one of the most famous love stories of all times. It inspired two operas in the standard repertoire: Puccini’s and Massenet’s earlier Manon. With a Foreword by Germaine Greer.
The Chevalier des Grieux is still a young man, but already life and bitter experience have worn him to a shell. The kindness of a stranger persuades him to reveal his troubles: his helpless, ill–starred love for Manon and the mutually destructive affair that has given him, in turn, the joy of sexual love and the misery of betrayal and moral degradation. Set in Paris and Louisiana, Prévost’s archetypal romance proved to be highly influential, its passion and tragedy inspiring operas and ballets, while the compelling character of Manon prefigures a host of 19th–century Romantic heroines. Novelist and Benedictine Antoine François Prévost (16871763) is one of the foremost writers of the 18th century. His works have inspired lasting admiration for their lucidity and penetrating psychology.
