The Evolution of Insect Mating Systems

Sexual Conflict (Monographs in Behavior and Ecology)
ASIN: 0691059888 |
Book Description
One hundred years after Darwin considered how sexual selection shapes the behavioral and morphological characteristics of males for acquiring mates, Parker realized that sexual selection continues after mating through sperm competition. Because females often mate with multiple males before producing offspring, selection favors adaptations that allow males to preempt sperm from previous males and to prevent their own sperm from preemption by future males. Since the 1970s, this area of research has seen exponential growth, and biologists now recognize sperm competition as an evolutionary force that drives such adaptations as mate guarding, genital morphology, and ejaculate chemistry across all animal taxa. The insects have been critical to this research, and they still offer the greatest potential to reveal fully the evolutionary consequences of sperm competition.
This book analyzes and extends thirty years of theoretical and empirical work on insect sperm competition. It considers both male and female interests in sperm utilization and the sexual conflict that can arise when these differ. It covers the mechanics of sperm transfer and utilization, morphology, physiology, and behavior. Sperm competition is shown to have dramatic effects on adaptation in the context of reproduction as well as far-reaching ramifications on life-history evolution and speciation.
Written by a top researcher in the field, this comprehensive, up-to-date review of the evolutionary causes and consequences of sperm competition in the insects will prove an invaluable reference for students and established researchers in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology.
Book Description
The main goals of this text are to develop students' appreciation for the molecular world and stress the fundamental role it plays in our daily lives. It also strives to help students understand the major scientific, technological, and environmental issues affecting our society. To accomplish these goals, the author has made extensive efforts to clearly identify and explain connections between the molecular world and macroscopic world as well as between principles and applications. The Third Edition of CHEMISTRY IN FOCUS adds new pedagogy and technological resources, such as OWL for Liberal Arts, that further enhance learning and appreciation of the molecular world.
Customer Reviews:
Very good book for an Introductory Level.......1999-05-12
It is a good book for people starting to learn about chemistry. It teaches the basic principles and more advanced effects on life, without going to much into detail, and therefore does not confuse the reader.
Book Description
John Suchocki's Conceptual Chemistry: Understanding Our World of Atoms and Molecules makes chemistry come alive for the nonscience reader through an engaging writing style, fun and easy-to-perform experiments, and a multimedia package that is as uniquely integrated as it is extensive. Building on the success of the First Edition, this revised book provides a fresh, insightful, and welcoming look into the concepts of chemistry. Twelve core chapters cover basic chemical concepts including atomic models, chemical bonding, and chemical reactions. These are followed by seven chapters organized around applied chemistry topics such as nutrition, drugs, agriculture, water resources, the atmosphere, modern materials, and energy sources. For college instructors, students and readers interested in chemistry.

Conceptual Cemistry text review.......2005-05-01
Well, it looks like I'm giving yet another one of my college textbooks a less than stellar review. This particular book was the required text for Chemistry 1010 at my college. Extremely expensive is how I feel about this book, since unlike my intro Psych book, which cost just as much, I find this one to be both confusing and patronizing. I had a slave driver for a Honors Chem teacher in high school, so I expected Chemistry to be easy, since I later found out that in high school I had taken the equivalent of a Chemistry class required of college level Chemistry majors. My professor was fairly good. He made it a point of explaining all the math and all the other mumbo-jumbo in this text. He had to do that a lot. Why, you ask? Because, this book, I swear, was written for a sixth grader. It comes across as such, especially in the first few chapters, where they talk about atoms and molarity, elements and compounds. It isn't until the later chapters, when you get to learn about things I still cannot even spell, that the author finally becomes serious. But still, the weird jokes about the neutron who went to the bar, the pictures of the author's wife and family members strewn about, and the corny cartoon characters trying to make Chemistry equations "fun" are just that-sappy and VERY corny. I had to repeatedly look at the cover of the book to make sure I was not reading a child's Chemistry text. And, come the day of the final, most of my classmates are more than willing to get rid of this text, which for most of us has served us well as a paperweight. I didn't even get to use it for that-my roommate is a Chemistry major and had an even bigger Chemistry book to use for that purpose. I spent $102 on this thing that masquerades as a college level Chemistry text, but in reality reads like it was meant for an uneducated 12 year old. The vast majority of us in this class did not use this book. We had a fairly decent professor whose lectures proved far more useful than this text, althought his tests were quite confusing. This book has no real purpose. Save your money and look for the copy on reserve at the library. It is better than being reminded that in the scope of the author, that you are not worthy of being treated like a college level adult because you did not take the intro Chemistry class aimed at Chem majors. This book is horrible, and the worst part is that I only got $45 back for it at textbook buyback this last week. Ugh.

Chemistry: Connections to Our Changing World.......2005-09-14
The book came in earlier than expected. However, the book was not near the description posted. It was said to be "Like New," but the textbook was quite worn in the corners and binding.

Great, clear chemistry book!.......2004-06-09
I'm currently a 10th grade high school student, and this book was great for me, simply great. Very clear, great diagrams, very helpful sample problems and reviews... it even has a laboratory safety manual, an a listing of the elements both on the table, and in alphabetical order!

It is what it is.......2006-06-10
This book is everything it says it is. I am in school to be a chem teacher and P chem has been mind boggling. The many examples gets a person into thinking like a p chemists and this is invaluable when trying to set up the math problems in an acutal class. If you understand your Calc the math isn't the issue in passing p chem its setting up the math. This book is a must read for any under grad chemist. I am going to write the author this book is a master piece. Simple and to the point with lots of real world examples.
Good for a low level intro course.......2006-04-21
This book does a great job at discribing the conceptual aspects of basic p.chem topics like thermodynaics, kinectics and photochemistry. Unfortuently it only breafly explaines the mathmatical aspects and in little detail, making the book unsutible for anythig except a low level class. The book also suffers from a severe lack of practice problems. If you only need to understad the basic concepts of p.chem this book cannot be beat, but if you need to know the nitty gritty mathmatical deatials you will be hurting at test time.

Mass Transportation Problems: Volume II: Applications (Probability and its Applications)
ASIN: 0387983503 |
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive account of the theory of mass transportation problems and its applications. In Volume I, the authors systematically develop the theory of mass transportation with emphasis to the Monge-Kantorovich mass transportation and the Kantorovich- Rubinstein mass transshipment problems, and their various extensions. They discuss a variety of different approaches towards solutions of these problems and exploit the rich interrelations to several mathematical sciences--from functional analysis to probability theory and mathematical economics. The second volume is devoted to applications to the mass transportation and mass transshipment problems to topics in applied probability, theory of moments and distributions with given marginals, queucing theory, risk theory of probability metrics and its applications to various fields, amoung them general limit theorems for Gaussian and non-Gaussian limiting laws, stochastic differential equations, stochastic algorithms and rounding problems. The book will be useful to graduate students and researchers in the fields of theoretical and applied probability, operations research, computer science, and mathematical economics. The prerequisites for this book are graduate level probability theory and real and functional analysis.

Book Description
Initially composed for newspaper publication, and inspired by Thomas De Quincey’s Confessions of an Opium Eater, Baudelaire’s musings on wine and hashish provide acute and fascinating psychological insight into the mind of the addict. On Wine and Hashish asserts the ambivalence of memory, urging a union of willpower and sensual pleasure as Baudelaire claims that wine and hashish bring about an escape of narrative time. This characteristic theme anticipates his famous prose poems, “Le Spleen de Paris,” in which drunkenness—as induced by wine, poetry, or virtue—is celebrated in extraordinary style.
Customer Reviews:
Essential Background.......2004-10-15
Essential background reading for anyone at all interested in Baudelaire - after all, one of his fondest sayings was 'Enivrez-vous!' - 'Get drunk!', and he often celebrated intoxicated states in remarkable style. Although he is not to be side-lined as a writer whose whole scope consists of these intoxicated states - there was a recent biography which put forward the case that his whole significance as a writer was that of a drug-addict - these states do form an integral part of, as it were 'Baudelaire-land', and it is essential to understand them in order to understand Baudelaire as a poet and thinker. Here, in an attractive hesperus volume, we have him writing directly about intoxicated states, in a fascinating insight into the workings of his mind, his time in Paris, and his attitudes towards alcohol and drugs. Well worth buying.
Gastric Memoir.......2004-09-11
Think of this short piece more as a culinary review than a work of philosophy or fiction or even memoir. Baudelaire speaks to the pros and cons of both Wine and Hashish as well as the impact of both on the body. In addition, he dabbles in satire and social insight, giving the reader a wonderful view of his life, opinions and experiences.
Classic.......2004-01-30
This is Baud writing about his experiences with Hashish and Wine. It is very poetic and very enjoyable with lots of memorable quotes.
Oh Great Hashish!

some might take issue with its extremes......but as one man's experiences, keep it in mind "Moderation" in all things!
At the time of its release in 1860, Charles Baudelaire's "Artificial Paradises (Les Paradis Artificiels)" met with immediate praise. One of the most important French symbolists, Baudelaire led a debauched, violent, and ultimately tragic life, dying an opium addict in 1867. This book, a response to Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an Opium Eater, serves as a memoir of Baudelaire's last years.
In this beautifully wrought portrait of the effects of wine, opium, and hashish on the mind, Baudelaire captures the dreamlike visions he experienced during his narcotic trances. These hallucinations, sometimes exquisite, sometimes disturbing, and the delusions of grandeur that often accompanied them, constitute the Paradis Artificiels, the gorgeous yet false worlds of ecstasy that eventually led to his ruin. Contrasting the effects of hashish and opium with those of wine, Baudelaire concludes that "wine exalts the will, hashish destroys it" and makes idlers of all those who use it.
