Book Description
This book describes the mathematical aspects of the semantics of programming languages. The main goals are to provide formal tools to assess the meaning of programming constructs in both a language-independent and a machine-independent way and to prove properties about programs, such as whether they terminate, or whether their result is a solution of the problem they are supposed to solve. In order to achieve this the authors first present, in an elementary and unified way, the theory of certain topological spaces that have proved of use in the modeling of various families of typed lambda calculi considered as core programming languages and as meta-languages for denotational semantics. This theory is now known as Domain Theory, and was founded as a subject by Scott and Plotkin. One of the main concerns is to establish links between mathematical structures and more syntactic approaches to semantics, often referred to as operational semantics, which is also described. This dual approach has the double advantage of motivating computer scientists to do some mathematics and of interesting mathematicians in unfamiliar application areas from computer science.

A near Psychotic Break-7 on the Ritcher Scale.......2003-10-28
Written by two psychotic professors who are experts in the field. The book, though written for mature readers , is lucid and leads the reader scenically to thre climax on Process Algebras. The book is a bit disjointed though. In Theoretical Computer Science, where the more general a "general emotional disturbance" is the better, I suggest that the authors should have had worsened their illness somwhat (I am being funny now!) by utilizing Category Theory, Domain Equations, and Universal Algebra as a unifying framework for the topics in the rest of the book. Also, they should have ncluded more on Category Theory and in particular, Domain Equations in this book. They should had shown the interrelationships between the three frameworks as well: the book would have been lengthened somewhat but more complete.
Although I am just about to read the book, I feel I am mature enough to follow where a Math book is going upon looking through it in sequence.
I am an undergrad at CUNY Bachelaureate Program Queens College Math Department who is trying not to be arrogant.

I couldn't put it better. This is one of the books that makes life worth living.
A powerful and profound book.......2000-08-14
This is a powerful and profound book and even sort of funny (a professor of everything... c'mon!!!)
This is a difficult book. It has small print and is written in the sort of stilted style that one would expect for a book with a Latin name written by a Scot more than a century ago. Carlyle was one of the most brilliant men of his time and in this book you can see hints of Goethe and Novalis and the other German romantic types..... which makes it sort of worthwhile....
But this was a really tough book for me to get through. Normally, I can plow through about anything.... but this took an awful lot of work....
I recommend it, though, with that qualification.... it is one of the "best" books ever written....!
Sartor Resartus in 100 Words.......2000-08-04
In Book 1, the narrator presents to British readers German professor Diogenes Teufelsdrockh and his "Philosophy of Clothes". Book 2 describes Teufelsdrockh's childhood, education, first love, heartbreak, sad wanderings, loss and rediscovery of faith. Book 3 expands the philosophy. Only seeing through "clothes" (anything - notably rationalism -masking man's true nature as "spirit") can we understand life : education & art (flamelike, a spirit grows when kindled by another, not composted) the symbiosis of religion & society, science's limitations.Like the ramblings of a half-mad saint (sweetened by storyline only in Book 2) moments of beauty hide within thick stylistic jungle.

This great work lays the foundation for correcting the ills of our society today. Many great lessons are to be learned. The minnow theory and the lessions learned from the Everlasting Yea are timeless. Must read and reread to gain fully understanding.

I may have an original copy of Sartor Resartus, and would love someone's opinion. This hardcover book was published by James Miller in 1866. The title page has: "FROM THE LAST LONDON EDITION, REVISED AND CORRECTED BY THE AUTHOR."

Book Description
Sartor Resartus is Thomas Carlyle's most enduring and influential work. First published in serial form in Fraser's Magazine in 1833-1834, it was discovered by the American Transcendentalists. Sponsored by Ralph Waldo Emerson, it was first printed as a book in Boston in 1836 and immediately became the inspiration for the Transcendental movement. The first London trade edition was published in 1838. By the 1840s, largely on the strength of Sartor Resartus, Carlyle became one of the leading literary figures in Britain.
Sartor Resartus became one of the important texts of nineteenth-century English literature, central to the Romantic movement and Victorian culture. At the time of Carlyle's death in 1881, more than 69,000 copies had been sold. The post-Victorian influence continued and extends to writers as diverse as Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, Willa Cather and Ernest Hemingway.
This edition of Sartor Resartus is the first publication of the work that uses all extant versions to create an accurate authorial text. This volume, the second in an eight-volume series, includes a complete textual apparatus as well as a historical introduction and full critical and explanatory annotation.

Classic study by the Scottish essayist, satirist, and historian, whose work was hugely influential during the Victorian era. After attending the University of Edinburgh, Carlyle suffered an intense crisis of faith and conversion that would provide the material for his most well-known book Sartor Resartus. The book was intended to be simultaneously factual and fictional, serious and satirical, speculative and historical. It ironically commented on its own formal structure, while forcing the reader to confront the problem of where 'truth' is to be found.

Carlyle's Sartor Resartus was a disguised spiritual autobiography, in which he faces the tendencies to intellectual skepticism and dedicates himself to a life of spiritual affirmation. The first half of the book is about the ideas of a self-made philosopher who believes everything can be explained in terms of clothes. Carlyle also undertook several series of lectures, of which the most significant was On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History.
