Physical Activity Instruction of Older Adults is the first book to detail the fundamental knowledge and skills associated with the training modules outlined in the International Curriculum Guidelines for Preparing Physical Activity Instructors of Older Adults. The curriculum guidelines, published in 2004, were developed by an international coalition of senior fitness specialists.
Physical Activity Instruction of Older Adults presents the competency-based objectives that fitness instructors should know and be able to perform to lead safe and effective physical activity programs for older adults with diverse functional capabilities.
A comprehensive blend of theory, practical content, and detailed instruction, the text is organized into five parts: · Part I introduces the new field of gerokinesiology; provides an overview of the aging process; and discusses the benefits of an active lifestyle in disease prevention, health promotion, and quality of life. · Part II provides information and guidelines for preexercise screenings and assessments, client feedback, and goal setting. · Part III focuses on the core fitness and skill components of a well-rounded physical activity program for older adults, including warm-up and cool-down, flexibility and resistance training, aerobic exercise, and balance and mobility training. · Part IV introduces specialty program and training methods, including exercise such as yoga, aquatic exercise, and master athlete training. · Part V covers how to apply principles of motor learning to program design; teaching, leadership, and motivational skills; special considerations for specific medical conditions; and legal and professional ethics and standards for instructors.
Application activities at the end of each chapter help the reader to synthesize the information and prepare them to design well-rounded physical activity programs for older adults. Other student-friendly elements include chapter objectives, introductions, summaries, study questions, key terms, and key points. In addition, numerous photos, figures, and tables make the book not just interesting, but visually appealing as well. This book is ideal for undergraduate students, and it is an excellent reference for physical activity instructors of older adults, fitness specialists, personal trainers, and activity directors.

Model building in the social sciences can increasingly rely on well elaborated formal theories. At the same time inexpensive large computational capacities are now available. Both make computer-based model building and simulation possible in social science, whose central aim is in particular an understanding of social dynamics. Such social dynamics refer to public opinion formation, partner choice, strategy decisions in social dilemma situations and much more. In the context of such modelling approaches, novel problems in philosophy of science arise which must be analysed - the main aim of this book.
Interest in social simulation has recently been growing rapidly world- wide, mainly as a result of the increasing availability of powerful personal computers. The field has also been greatly influenced by developments in cellular automata theory (from mathematics) and in distributed artificial intelligence which provided tools readily applicable to social simulation.
This book presents a number of modelling and simulation approaches and their relations to problems in philosophy of science. It addresses sociologists and other social scientists interested in formal modelling, mathematical sociology, and computer simulation as well as computer scientists interested in social science applications, and philosophers of social science.

Finally, the "Cronopios and Famas" section delightfully characterizes, in the words of Carlos Fuentes, "those enemies of pomposity, academic rigor mortis and cardboard celebrity-a band of literary Marx Brothers." CORTAZAR AT HIS BEST.......2005-10-24
I'm an avid reader of Cortazar and I'm always searching for new ways of "discovering" his literature. I'm an Argentinean literary translator and I'm extremely happy with Paul Blackburn's translation. Blackburn fully grasps the ideas and feelings Cortazar show in the original work. I do believe it's the best translation of Cortazar's works! If any reader is interested in diving into a completely different world, Cronopios and Famas is perfect for you.

Years ago I heard readings from this book on KPFK, and was quite impressed ( enough so to keep the tape for some 40 years) What a treat to find that it is available in paperback. Cortazar's sense of humour and sense of the absurd along with his poetic style are unsurpassed. If you have never read this one, it is a real treat. If I had to pick ten books to take to the proverbial desert island, this would be one of them!
Cronopios and famas.......2002-09-20
This book will open your mind like it or not. The great writing style serves to seduce you as it works on you. This is the only book I would say demandeds to be read two or more times at the least. Once don't with it you can't help but feel like you know something that the people around you don't as if some how you had an edge.
Makes me happy........2001-01-26
This is on my list of favorite books of all time; it is a great book not because it subtly describes the frivolties of life and not because it shows the persistence of human spirit, blah blah blah... It is a beautiful and great book because it makes you laugh - in its own great non funny way. It is not laughing out loud, of course, more like chuckling to yourself as you read it. You even get to identify with the characters of the book, with their weird perks and idiosyncracies. In our real world, the cronopios have a great cult following (at least online) - in the book, they are what people strive to be: worry-free animals in pursuit of happiness.
I read this book on a regular basis, mostly in short pieces. It is written in short chapters, so even when you are too tired to read anything else, this will cheer you up.
Recommended for all conoisseurs of inventive and experimental literature.
Brilliant and boldly experimental.......2001-01-19
"Cronopios and Famas," by Julio Cortazar, is one of those wonderful books that stands in a class by itself. It has been translated from Spanish into English by Paul Blackburn. The book is a collection of interconnected short pieces that often blur the distinctions between the short story and the essay; some of the pieces further share aspects of poetry and drama. Cortazar also incorporates elements of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and comedy into this work. Call "Cronopios and Famas" a novel, if you prefer; or simply label it "experimental literature." But whatever you call it, read it!
The book is divided into four main sections, each of which is further subdivided into several short pieces. The first section, "The Instruction Manual," contains such pieces as "Instructions on How to Cry" and "Instructions on How to Climb a Staircase." Cortazar invites us to look at everyday things and actions from a radically altered perspective; in the process, he seems to point towards an occult, or metaphysical, wisdom.
The second section, "Unusual Occupations," details the antics of a bizarre family (think TV's "Addams Family" as drawn by Dr. Seuss, with input from Franz Kafka). The third section, "Unstable Stuff," is the most varied and chaotic section of the book, and is rich in fantastic and absurd elements.
The final section of the book has the same title as the entire book: "Cronopios and Famas." In several short vignettes Cortazar draws a portrait of an alternate society populated by three different types (races? castes? species?) of beings: Cronopios, Famas, and Esperanzas. Cortazar describes the individuals of each group, and details many instances of social interactions between the groups. This final section of the book is reminiscent of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," but more cryptic. Along the way we witness the invention of the "wild-artichoke clock" and get a glimpse of "GENITAL, the Cigarette with Sex."
"Cronopios and Famas" is not for the lazy reader. I must admit that after my first reading of the book, I didn't really like it that much. But the second time I read it, I said to myself, "This is brilliant! What was wrong with me the first time I read it?" I wonder what my reactions will be on my third and fourth readings. This book, rich in irony and remarkable images, is truly a remarkable achievement by one of the most innovative masters of 20th century literature.

El mejor ensayo poético que he leído.......1999-10-04
Me gusta la manera que tiene Cortázar de reírse o burlarse de los hechos cotidianos y de la gente común, aunque no sé si conozca a alguien que se haya reído leyendo este libro. Por otro lado, me parece que la comparación de Julio con Quino o siquiera con Mel Brooks, es un tanto absurda. El libro en sí es muy bueno, y no sólo por la manera en cómo está escrito, sino que también por el vocabulario que Cortázar elige para este ensayo: si se lee en voz alta (o se imagina cómo sonaría leído), uno puede darse cuenta de que lo que está escrito está escrito de esa manera no por algo de azar, sino que así quiso Cortázar que sonara. Es un poco más flojo que Rayuela (más que un poco) pero si lo que se busca es lectura por un día, está muy bien. Un ensayo maravilloso, distante del modelo normal y poseedor de un estilo vanguardista que el tiempo no ha logrado reproducir. A Must Buy Book.

Es increíble como Córtazar logra escribir cosas tan entretenidas y literarias a partir de hechos tan simples como subir una escalera, o simplemente llorar. Es un libro ideal para leerlo a un grupo de personas y reírse juntos de esa seriedad de decir las cosas que causa risa. Muy bueno.

Una de las mas geniales obras de Julio Cortazar. Humor del bueno, muy en el estilo de Quino, o de Mel Brooks.
En la primera parte, Cortazar nos presenta un "Manual de Instrucciones" que comienza con las Instrucciones para llorar... Muy acertado ese comienzo, pues en el resto del libro uno pasa gran parte del tiempo llorando de la risa... Y, como dice el mismo Cortazar: "dejando de lado los motivos, atengamonos a la manera correcta de llorar".
