Cellular Mechanisms of Sensory Processing: The Somatosensory System (Nato a S I Series Series H, Cell Biology)
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387576258 |
Book Description
This volume is a multi-disciplinary characterization of the somatosensory system - a field that has experienced revolutionary changes in recent years through the accumulation of basic and clinical data. For example, the discovery of the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system has changed our view on the development of inflammatory diseases, while the cloning of genes encoding different trophic factors boosted studies revealing profound changes in the regeneration of neurones, and the induction of changes in phenotype.

Corticofugal Modulation of Sensory Information (Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology)
Angel Nunez , and Eduardo Malmierca Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540367691 |
Book Description
Sensory signals reach the cerebral cortex after having made synapses in different relay stations along the sensory pathway. The flow of sensory information in subcortical relay stations is controlled by the action of precise topographic connections from the neocortex. Several lines of research indicate that the massive corticifugal system improves ongoing subcortical sensory processing and reorganizes the receptive fields in visual, auditory and somatosensory systems. In all these sensory systems cortical neurons mediate both the highly focused positive feedback to subcortical neurons with overlapping receptive fields and a widespread inhibition to "non-matching neurons". This cortical feedback, which has been called "egocentric selection", can play a pivotal role in gating the sensory information that reaches the thalamus and cortex. Thus, corticofugal projections may contribute to selective attention since they enhance neuronal responses for attentionally relevant stimuli and by suppressing sensory responses of distractive stimuli. Also, corticofugal projections enhance oscillatory activity in order to synchronize neurons located in the same or in different relay stations in order to improve sensory processing. In conclusion, corticofugal pathways precisely control sensory transmission throughout the central nervous system.

Book Description
This broad treatise, published in three volumes, provides a systematic overview of the biological aspects and problems of hu-man growth and development from conception to full maturity. The first volume of this series, in three parts, is devoted to the rapidly expanding field of brain development. World-wide contributions touch on physiological, biochemical and structural aspects of de-velopment in humans, and in animals where appropriate. The text is richly accompanied by illustrations and references and is of interest to researchers and medical specialists.

Growth Factors as Drugs for Neurological and Sensory Disorders - Symposium No. 196
CIBA Foundation Symposium Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471957216 |
Book Description
Degeneration of sensory receptors or of the nerves innervating them leads to a sensory deficit. Various strategies have been tried for promoting regrowth of sensory receptors, particularly in the eye and ear. The latest data from experimental studies in animals are presented in the book including applications of BDNF and CNTF in the eye and epidermal growth factor in the ear.

The Neural Basis of Early Vision (Keio University International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 4431004599 |
Book Description
Researchers in recent decades have elucidated signal transduction in the retina and the function of the visual cortex. The highly flexible nature of neural circuits in the visual cortex especially during the critical period has been an interesting subject for studying neural plasticity and development. Recent advances in the visual neurosciences of the vertebrate retina and the visual cortex were discussed during the 12th Keio International Symposium for Life Science and Medicine, meeting jointly with Vision Forum 2002. Contributions to the symposium collected in this volume reflect the convergence of physiological, cell biological, molecular, mathematical, and clinical approaches. The book covers topics ranging from phototransduction to visual information processing in the primary visual cortex, and includes clinical studies on hereditary night blindness, creating a valuable source of information for researchers and clinicians in the visual neurosciences.

Science and Technology Text Mining: Strategic Management and Implementation in Government Organization
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423585666 |
Product Description
This is a OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH ARLINGTON VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A060124. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report focuses on the strategic role and the implementation of textual data mining (TDM) in government organizations, with special emphasis on TDM to support the management of science and technology (S&T). It begins by defining TDM, and discussing the strategic management process in federal government organizations and the role of TDM as an integral part of this process. The report then proceeds to describe some of the uses and applications of TDM. The results of a demonstration program by the U.S. Office of Naval Research show some potential benefits from TDM: (1) integration of national and multi-national S&T databases; (2) supporting strategic decisions on the direction and funding of government S&T; and (3) creation of usable S&T databases to support strategic decisions in other areas of government. Implications of the demonstration program relative to larger scale implementation of TDM are discussed. The report ends with a description of the principles and requirements of higher quality TDM studies. The appendix describes conceptually how a college-based TDM training program could be implemented.

Book Description
Science Support materials are a photocopiable resource designed for use with less able pupils at key stage 4. Although the resource is fully photocopiable, many of the sheets are reusable in an attempt to minimise the cost of photocopying. The key ideas in science are presented and reinforced using a variety of different approaches. The layout and language levels have been carefully controlled to present the material in the most accessible way possible. All the materials have been trialled in both mainstream and special schools.

Software Computing Medthods in Human Sciences
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540004661 |
Book Description
This book considers Soft Computing methods and their applications in the human sciences, such as the social and the behavioral sciences. Soft Computing methods - including fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computing and probabilistic reasoning - are state-of-the-art methods in theory formation and model construction. The powerful application areas of these methods in the human sciences are demonstrated, including the replacement of statistical models by simpler numerical or linguistic Soft Computing models and the use of computer simulations with approximate and linguistic constituents.
"Dr. Niskanens work opens new vistas in application of soft computing, fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory to the human sciences. This book is likely to be viewed in retrospect as a landmark in its field" - Lotfi A. Zadeh, Berkeley.

Ecos essays don't get to the pace.......2005-11-21
The witty traveler.......2004-01-22
What is like to travel with Umberto Eco.......2003-12-09
But it was enough for me to read only the first story (How to Travel with a Salmon) and I decided I had to read the whole book.
This is the book that will give you a nice feeling, sometimes will make you even laugh out loud, as it is written with a lot of wit and sense of humour.
It is suitable for someone who wants a light reading and intelligent at the same time.
I was pleasantly surprised to meet the playful side of Mr. Eco which resulted in light satires at the address of some social institutions, bureaucracy and habits that people have. It is a delightful reading that I bet, you don't want to miss.
Eco does stand-up comedy in a book..........2003-06-13
