        Book Description

Human Demography and Disease offers an interdisciplinary and integrated perspective on the relationship between historical populations and the dynamics of epidemiological processes. It brings the techniques of time-series analysis and computer matrix modeling to historical demography and geography to extract detailed information concerning the oscillations in births, deaths, migrations and epidemics. This book presents a new way of studying preindustrial communities and explores the subtle, and hitherto undetected effects of fluctuating nutritional levels on mortality patterns and the dynamics of infectious diseases.

                Book Description

This book presents the mathematical models applicable to manufacturing systems management, covering problems from production to real time control. It explores manufacturing systems from the viewpoints of both physical structure and performance measures. Two broad classes of mathematical models are covered in detail: o Generative models, which yield a set of decision variables optimizing a performance measure, based on mathematical optimization o Evaluative models, which evaluate some performance measures as a function of some predefined decision strategy. Within this class Petri Nets and Queueing Networks are discussed. Advanced Models for Manufacturing Systems Management describes dynamic systems modeling by state equations, a unifying framework for a wide variety of models. The text/reference stresses model building, but it examines model solving as well. Computational techniques are illustrated, such as linear programming, branch and bound methods, and dynamic programming. Particular emphasis is given to the development of heuristic methods from mathematical models. The book provides readers with valuable tools for management and design. The use of descriptive models within an optimization algorithm is considered. Numerous examples illustrate theoretical concepts throughout text. Appendices are given at the end of the book in order to recall fundamentals, such as linear programming and graph theory. Appendices also appear within each chapter. In this way, readers can follow the main reading path without getting involved with details; these appendices can be read at a later time. This textual structure makes this book particularly well suited for self-study. Advanced Models for Manufacturing Systems Management is beneficial reading for both students and practitioners.

                  Book Description

Manufacturing systems, regardless of their size, have to work with scarce resources in dynamic environments. Managers are asked to assign production facilities over time to parallel activities respecting operational constraints and deadlines while keeping resource costs as low as possible. Thus, classic scheduling approaches are not adequate when (i) a task simultaneously requires a set of different resources and (ii) a trade-off between different objectives (like time, cost and workload balance) should be reached. In such a case, more sophisticated models and algorithms should be brought to the attention of managers and executives of manufacturing companies.

Effective Resource Management in Manufacturing Systems aims to provide robust methods for achieving effective resource allocation and to solve related problems that occur daily and often generate cost overruns, specifically focusing on problems like resource levelling, sizing of machines and production layouts, cost optimization in production planning and scheduling. This approach is based on providing quantitative methods, covering both mathematical programming and algorithms, leading to high quality solutions for the analysed problems. Details of extensive experimentation is provided for the proposed techniques to put them in a practical perspective, so that, on the one hand, the reader can reproduce them, and, on the other hand, it appears clear how they can be implemented in real scenarios.

This book will be a valuable resource for postgraduate students studying business, engineering or computer science. It will also be of interest to researchers in the fore-mentioned areas.

The ten stories in Ukridge revolve around Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge's none-too-successful schemes to make some money.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Corky, Old Horse.......2005-04-17

Reviewers of Ukridge seem to be diffident, and the discussion tends to center on their view of one Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, leading light and subject of said book. Missing the point, I'd say. When P.G.W. introduced this large and in charge Man of Affairs in Love Amoung the Chickens, he knew he was on to a good thing, and that they would travel many miles together. When, more brilliantly still, he hit upon Corky Pirbright as narrator and true blue friend of our dauntless hero, he laid a path that he himself would retread many times, in the Oldest Member, in Mr. Mulliner, in the unsinkable Bertie Wooster, and even in the occasional Drones Club Member.

He struck gold, I'd say, in these first sketches of the faithful but tempermentally at odds narrator who, for all his seeming passivity, is yet crucial to the plot. These early stories are a bit much taken together, but they read delightfully when sprinkled in anthologies or as an occasional hiatus for readers engrossed in Jeeves or Blandings novels. Taken that way, some of them are very good indeed, notably "Ukridge's Dog College" (early on done for television) and Ukridge's Accident Syndicate, which unleashes the blue blood of the sportsman that will play so much a part in the fortunes and misfortunes of Bingo, Uncle Fred, and others who like a little flutter, down to the most savvy of them all, the inimitable Jeeves. These stories stand alone, as do most of the earlier PGW bits, being largely written for serialisation or as one offs for magazines, particularly the Saturday Evening Post, but at least three of them tie together to tell the tales of Battling Billson, an early type of the pugilists who later would be so much a part of the world of Wooster, and these tales, especially, show young Wodehouse well on his way.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of Ukridge.......2004-11-08

No, these 10 stories are definitely not the cream of the Ukridge catalogue. In fact, you would probably not be far off in describing them as the worst (or least good) of the lot. In my opinion the later stories are much better. These were the very first 10 Ukridge short stories ever written, and they are markedly inferior to Plum's later efforts (where, incidentally, the stories are related by Ukridge himself; not by "Corky", who is less funny as a narrator).

The 3 stars are because, well, it's still Plum.

                    5 out of 5 stars Ukridge Romps!.......2004-11-05

If you haven't met Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge yet, you've missed a treat. I think of Ukridge as a comic character virtually equal to Falstaff.

P.G. Wodehouse based the character on a school friend which adds extra poignancy to the many hilarious tales in this book.

The book has ten chapters, each of which is an entire short story. However, the stories are connected to one another so you have continuing development of characters and plots.

The story is told from the perspective of the long-suffering James Corcoran, an impecunious author who is one of Ukridge's favorite sources of money, clothes, lodgings and all other sorts of accommodations.

Ukridge is a great schemer . . . who doesn't bother to work out all of the details. He's confident that an abundant universe will take care of him. Sometimes he's right and sometimes not.

Most people will be thrilled by Ukridge's career as a boxing manager for Battling Billson, the most mercurial fighter the world has ever know. Three chapters are devoted to that story.

The book opens with a classic Ukridge scheme; he's going to make a mint by training dogs to behave at Ukridge's Dog College.

The second story, Ukridge's Accident Syndicate, shows that even if a scheme works, it may not pay off in the way you expected.

Ukridge tries his hand at being a political surrogate in The Long Arm of Looney Coote, with hilarious consequences.

In First Aid for Dora, Ukridge decides to help Dora recover from having lost her job . . . which she lost because of him. With help like his, one should probably seek out enemies instead! In Ukridge Sees Her Through, Dora gets more "help" from Ukridge.

Ukridge is prone to overstate his position to others. He lives to regret that tendency when it almost leads to unexpected matrimony in No Wedding Bells for Him.

In Ukridge Rounds a Nasty Corner, Ukridge falls in love and has to prove himself worthy of his love's family. Now that's a tough trick!

You can read each of these stories in less than an hour. I suggest spacing them out over time so you can enjoy their flavor longer.

5 out of 5 stars The Big, Broad Flexible Outlook.......2004-03-01

Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, that enemy of mankind, stars in ten brilliant short stories, all narrated by his long-suffering friend James Corcoran. Ukridge (pronounced "ook-ridge"), moocher of socks, shirts, and fivers, evader of creditors, bane of rich aunts, is another of Wodehouse's many great comic creations. Perhaps the best of these are about his management of soft-hearted fighter Wilberforce "Battling" Billson, but the stories are uniformly excellent and hilarious; full of unpredictable comic twists and the brilliant language and dialogue that make Wodehouse a full-fledged genius.

On the first page of the first story Ukridge offers Corocoran the rights to his life story for a hundred pounds down (quickly reduced to twenty-five). Corcoran, who foolishly lets the opportunity slip, may have lacked the big, broad, flexible outlook in this one instance, but P.G. certainly didn't.

The well-crafted, nice-looking edition is another winner in Everyman's excellent serires.

                    5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold.......2001-10-16

Ukridge is P G Wodehouse's greatest creation. Unfairly eclipsed in the public imagination by Jeeves&Wooster, for the simple reason that like Psmith Wodehouse didn't write that much for the character. But what there is, is pure gold and 'Ukridge' is no exception. No one story stands out as they're all mini-masterpieces. Get hold of it as soon as you can, old horse!

Nevertheless, I crawled into the bushes and administered to Aunt Elizabeth a prod in the lower ribs--if hens have lower ribs. The more I study hens, the more things they seem able to get along without-- which abruptly disturbed her calm detachment. She shot out at the spot where Mr. Chase was waiting with his coat off, and was promptly enveloped in that garment and captured.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - It sounds so weak-minded. But in the case of Love Among the Chickens it is unavoidable. It was not so much that you sympathised and encouraged - where you really came out strong was that you gave me the stuff. I like people who sympathise with me. I am grateful to those who encourage me. But the man to whom I raise the Wodehouse hat - owing to the increased cost of living, the same old brown one I had last year - it is being complained of on all sides, but the public must bear it like men till the straw hat season comes round - I say, the man to whom I raise this venerable relic is the man who gives me the material. Sixteen years ago, my William, when we were young and spritely lads; when you were a tricky centre-forward and I a fast bowler; when your head was covered with hair and my list of "Hobbies" in Who's Who included Boxing; I received from you one morning about thirty closely-written foolscap pages, giving me the details of your friend ---'s adventures on his Devonshire chicken farm. Round these I wove as funny a plot as I could, but the book stands or falls by the stuff you gave me about "Ukridge" - the things that actually happened.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for Wodehouse fans.......2007-08-26

P.G. Wodehouse's writing is like watching a favorite movie. You know what's going to happen, but it's a fun ride.

This book was written well before the Jeeves and Wooster series, but I can already see the beginnings of that kind of interplay in this book between Garnet and Ukridge. Wodehouse gives us the same comedy of manners he would become famous for in later years. Ukridge is hatching his scheme, spending money he doesn't have, and leaving Garnet holding the bag. It all works out in the end, as all of Wodehouse's stories do.

For fans of Ukridge, certain parts of this book may puzzle. For one thing, the straight man is Garnet, not Corky. Ukridge is also married in this novel. The later stories were prequels to this one, thus the differences.

For fans of Wodehouse, this is a nice book. For people getting introduced to his writing, I would suggest Jeeves and Wooster before this.

I happened upon this interesting book as I was simply searching "Chicken" titles and I have to say I am pleased with this story overall.

The setting is semi-rural, back in the 1920's and the terms used in what was then "modern english" at times required this reader to ponder the roots of their use?

For my part, I was looking for a great story about the early handling of poultry, specifically chickens... though this is touched upon in several locations, the focus is of course, on the interaction between classes and personality types.

It is to be a love story, but I felt that the author failed to adequately develop the focul relationship adequately, though the issues with other characters are wonderfully described.

Poultry Folk, like myself, will see early on, the folly in the way central characters handle their not-so-proffitable chicken venture. I was impressed that the author took the time to accurately name specific breeds which are well known today.

I found the book very enjoyable overall, but was left wanting in the end, as the author seemed to simply wrap things up in a not-so-tidy package?

So, not the best chicken book... characters not adequately developed for the reader and the central love-affair... well, I simply didn't "feel" it.

Worth a few chuckles and nicely bound by the way. (Hard Back Version)

Not his very best, but still very amusing. Title says all about the plot: boy meets girl among chickens, boy loses girl among chickens, boy wins girl among chickens. A quick read, under-plotted by Wodehouse's later standards.

NOTE: This, and all Wodehouse's early stuff (20 or 30 years' worth!), is available in its entirety online! For free!

                                4 out of 5 stars A treat for fans.......2006-11-10

A newly married Ukridge tackles the pitfalls of poultry farming: early Wodehouse with some hilarious moments foreshadowing his masterful maturity. Funny characters and delightful passages will brighten any Plum-lover's day. A valiant effort by Kessinger Publishing (reprinting hard-to-find material), but the manuscript-like booklet has an amateurish feel.

                                3 out of 5 stars Weak first grown-up novel.......2006-06-11

This is Wodehouse's first novel for grown-ups, though only available in an edition revised years later. It's better-plotted than his earlier schoolboy novels, and shows some hints of his later genius, but only hints. Wodehouse uses some of his signature plot devices, but he uses them here without irony, unlike in his mature work. (I sometimes suspect that Wodehouse's later work parodies his early work.) Oddly, though Ukridge is supposedly based on a real person, he is one of Wodehouse's most implausible characters, generally acting preposterously merely to advance the plot. The style is quite good, though, so I suspect that the 1920 version was fairly thorough rewrite of the 1906 original, a point on which there is some dispute. (The reference to Maxim Gorky, Trotsky, and Lenin in chapter 10 seems unlikely to have been written in 1906, for example.)
