    Book Description

In what is certain to be the key reference on iguanas for years to come, some of the world's leading experts offer a clear and accessible account of the latest research on the evolution, behavioral ecology, and conservation of these highly visible and increasingly endangered creatures, much loved by professional herpetologists and hobbyists alike.
The book begins with an introduction by noted iguana biologist Dr. Gordon Burghardt that examines the state of iguana research--past, present, and future--with an emphasis on social behavior. Three major sections follow, each opening with a synthesis by the volume editors, who survey the current status and likely future direction of investigations in the pertinent area. The first section focuses on different aspects of the taxonomic and morphological diversity of iguanas and includes a complete checklist of species. In the second section, contributors address the behavior and ecology of iguanas and provide compelling evidence that both may be far more complex than previously appreciated. The third and final section, highlighting the threats facing iguana populations today, describes the broad array of innovative conservation strategies that will be needed to help ensure their survival.
Illustrated throughout with photographs, distribution maps, tables, and figures, this volume will be the definitive resource for anyone--professional or curious amateur--interested in iguanas.

        Book Description

Books Dealing with the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions were written a generation ago. They included volumes entitled Bioorganic Mechanisms, I and II by T.C. Bruice and S.J. Benkovic, published in 1965, the volume entitled Catalysis in Chemistry and Enzymology by W.P. Jencks in 1969, and the volume entitled Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms by C.T. Walsh in 1979. The Walsh book was based on the course taught by W.P. Jencks and R.H. Abeles at Brandeis University in the 1960's and 1970's. By the late 1970's, much more could be included about the structures of enzymes and the kinetics and mechanisms of enzymatic reactions themselves, and less emphasis was placed on chemical models. Walshs book was widely used in courses on enzymatic mechanisms for many years. Much has happened in the field of mechanistic enzymology in the past 15 to 20 years. Walshs book is both out-of-date and out-of-focus in todays world of enzymatic mechanisms. There is no longer a single volume or a small collection of volumes to which students can be directed to obtain a clear understanding of the state of knowledge regarding the chemicals mechanisms by which enzymes catalyze biological reactions. There is no single volume to which medicinal chemists and biotechnologists can refer on the subject of enzymatic mechanisms. Practitioners in the field have recognized a need for a new book on enzymatic mechanisms for more than ten years, and several, including Walsh, have considered undertaking to modernize Walshs book. However, these good intentions have been abandoned for one reason or another. The great size of the knowledge base in mechanistic enzymology has been a deterrent. It seems too large a subject for a single author, and it is difficult for several authors to coordinate their work to mutual satisfaction. This text by Perry A. Frey and Adrian D. Hegeman accomplishes this feat, producing the long-awaited replacement for Walshs classic text.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good intro book.......2000-12-06

Espenson's book is ok. It's a little difficult to read at times, but covers the basics fairly well. More references would be useful. A good introductory book.

          4 out of 5 stars Generally a good book.......2000-11-30

This book has a lot of basic stuff in it. It is rather easy to read and simplistic. It is a good introductory kinetics book, but be prepared to take advantage of other resources in order to accomplish your kinetics task. Not necessarily a great reference book for your graduate studies.

            Book Description

In a chemical system with many chemical species several questions can be asked: what species react with other species: in what temporal order: and with what results? These questions have been asked for over one hundred years about simple and complex chemical systems, and the answers constitute the macroscopic reaction mechanism. In Determination of Complex Reaction Mechanisms authors John Ross, Igor Schreiber, and Marcel Vlad present several systematic approaches for obtaining information on the causal connectivity of chemical species, on correlations of chemical species, on the reaction pathway, and on the reaction mechanism. Basic pulse theory is demonstrated and tested in an experiment on glycolysis. In a second approach, measurements on time series of concentrations are used to construct correlation functions and a theory is developed which shows that from these functions information may be inferred on the reaction pathway, the reaction mechanism, and the centers of control in that mechanism. A third approach is based on application of genetic algorithm methods to the study of the evolutionary development of a reaction mechanism, to the attainment given goals in a mechanism, and to the determination of a reaction mechanism and rate coefficients by comparison with experiment. Responses of non-linear systems to pulses or other perturbations are analyzed, and mechanisms of oscillatory reactions are presented in detail. The concluding chapters give an introduction to bioinformatics and statistical methods for determining reaction mechanisms.

              Book Description

This thoroughly revised and updated edition of one of the classics of kinetics text books continues the successful concept of the 1974 edition: In its first part, a simplified approach to the determination of rate laws and mechnisms is given steadily working up to complex situations. In the following chapters the principles developed there are extensively used in a comprehensive account of reactions of transition metal complexes, including reactions of biological signifacance.

The text is illustrated by numerous figures and tables. Points of further interest are highlighted in special insets. 140 problems, taken from the original literature, enable the student to apply and deepen his newly acquired knowledge and make the book highly useful for courses in inorganic and organometallic reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, a wealth of over 1700 references renders it an indispensable work for the active researcher.

                Book Description

Chemical Kinetics and Mechanism considers the role of rate of reaction. It begins by introducing chemical kinetics and the analysis of reaction mechanism, from basic well-established concepts to leading edge research. Organic reaction mechanisms are then discussed, encompassing curly arrows, nucleophilic substitution and E1 and E2 elimination reactions. The book concludes with a Case Study on Zeolites, which examines their structure and internal dimensions in relation to their behaviour as molecular sieves and catalysts. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the "Kinetics Toolkit", a graph-plotting application designed for manipulation and analysis of kinetic data, which is built into many of the examples, questions and exercises in the text. There are also interactive activities illustrating reaction mechanisms. The Molecular World series provides an integrated introduction to all branches of chemistry for both students wishing to specialise and those wishing to gain a broad understanding of chemistry and its relevance to the everyday world and to other areas of science. The books, with their Case Studies and accompanying multi-media interactive CD-ROMs, will also provide valuable resource material for teachers and lecturers.

                          Book Description

Hypersingular Integral Equations and Their Applications presents various methods for solving singular and hypersingular integral equations. In particular, the authors construct new exact analytical solutions of some two-dimensional hypersingular integral equations and obtain an analytical solution in quadratures for the hypersingular equation on the sphere. They present theorems for the existence and uniqueness of solutions for hypersingular integral equations, and the theory they develop in this monograph can be used to investigate the convergence of approximate solutions obtained by finite-difference methods for elliptic-type partial differential equations. Numerous examples demonstrate some of the many applications of hypersingular integral equations. These include solutions to problems involving flow past the deck of a ship, the diffraction of acoustic waves on a cube, and flow past an airfoil with suction on its surface. About the authors: Ivan K. Lifanov is Head of the Department of Mathematics at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy and a Chief Researcher at the Institute of Computing Mathematics at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a Professor at Orel State University. His research interests focus on numerical methods, integral equations, and aerodynamics. Lev Poltavskii is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy and author of more than 50 scientific publications. G.M. Vainikko is a Professor at the Helsinki University of Technology. His research interests lie in applied mathematics, differential and integral equations, ill-posed problems, and inverse problems.

                            Book Description

Hypersingular integrals arise as constructions inverse to potential-type operators and are realized by the methods of regularization and finite differences. This volume develops these approaches in a comprehensive treatment of hypersingular integrals and their applications. The author is a renowned expert on the topic. He explains the basics before building more sophisticated ideas, and his discussions include a description of hypersingular integrals as they relate to functional spaces. Hypersingular Integrals and Their Applications also presents recent results and applications that will prove valuable to graduate students and researchers working in mathematical analysis.

Intaglio captures the idea of family, togetherness and forgivness, stressing it from beginning to the end. Commendable, as Intaglio shows support among a family, which is a plus that should be stressed more often. The women of this story depend upon one another for support, and travel through life with each other by there sides. The aspiration, the positivity and talents that the characters in Intaglio brings out a sense of admiration to the reader, which encourages reaching for the stars without being held down, whether it be dancing, dress making etc. Intaglio is likeable for it's ideas and the interpreted message. The book as a whole is a good, but somewhat slow read, as many events must take place before any exciting events awaken the mind of the reader. The focus is on many young women, and how they interact in each other's lives. Adult readers may find Intaglio a little elementary, because of the way that the characters are presented, as angels or all good children, or fairy tale type of story. Intaglio is sure to entertain and warm your heart.

Since I have studied with the author, I could be a bit prejudiced, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is poetic and hypnotic and a beautiful reflection on the community of women.
