Fungal Populations and Species (Life Science)
John Burnett Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198515529 |
Book Description
The population genetics and speciation of fungi is a rapidly developing field, heavily dependent upon the use of molecular markers. No basic text exists which describes the methods employed or the findings obtained from such investigations. This book is intended to provide such an account. It describes the methodologies employed and, for the benefit of the non-mycological reader, a brief introduction to basic fungal biology. Recent findings relating to processes in fungal populations - mutation, migration, recombination, heterokaryosis, hybridization, polyploidy, and the operation of selective forces are combined with traditional fungal biology. Finally the taxonomic problems raised by fungal species are discussed, together with the processes of speciation.

ASIN: 354040578X |
Book Description
Quality assurance (QA) in chemical measurement is one of the major challenges in the work field of chemists. It is hard for the beginner to find information on all those topics related to QA. This book contains a compilation from different areas which deal with QA. Topics covered in this book include: Accreditation - ISO 17025, Certification - ISO 9000, Proficiency Testing, Basic Statistics, Measurement Uncertainty, Glossary / Institutions, Fit for the purpose (Philosophy), Quality Manual, Validation of Methods, Accreditation vs. Certification, GLP, Calibration - Detection Limit, Reference Materials, Control Charts, Metrology/Traceability, TQM and Cost of Quality.
Standards such as ISO 17025, accreditation, measurement uncertainty amongst many others are topics which are often not covered in university classes. Especially first time employees or those switching to the field of analytical chemistry measurements are stressed by many special terms and requirements, they have not heard of before. Sometimes it might be necessary to introduce other newcomers to the field with some startup information.
It is the aim of this book to give a help to get started. It provides basic information in all fields that are of interest for quality assurance in chemical measurement regarding management requirements as well as technical requirements. It is also very valuable for all those leaving the university, before they seek their first employment and to get ready for the job interview.
Electronic reading is supported by a CD which accompanies the book. Material provided thereon can be used as memory card or as ready to use transparencies for teaching purposes in educational institutions and for in-house training of the laboratory staff.
Specialists from different fields have contributed to this book sharing their expertise with the reader to get started in QA.

Quality Assurance in the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory
D. Brynn Hibbert Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195162137 |
Book Description
Analytical chemical results touch everyones lives can we eat the food? do I have a disease? did the defendant leave his DNA at the crime scene? should I invest in that gold mine? When a chemist measures something how do we know that the result is appropriate? What is fit for purpose in the context of analytical chemistry? Many manufacturing and service companies have embraced traditional statistical approaches to quality assurance, and these have been adopted by analytical chemistry laboratories. However the right chemical answer is never known, so there is not a direct parallel with the manufacture of ball bearings which can be measured and assessed. The customer of the analytical services relies on the quality assurance and quality control procedures adopted by the laboratory. It is the totality of the QA effort, perhaps first brought together in this text, that gives the customer confidence in the result. QA in the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory takes the reader through all aspects of QA, from the statistical basics and quality control tools to becoming accredited to international standards. The latest understanding of concepts such as measurement uncertainty and metrological traceability are explained for a working chemist or her client. How to design experiments to optimize an analytical process is included, together with the necessary statistics to analyze the results. All numerical manipulation and examples are given as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets that can be implemented on any personal computer. Different kinds of interlaboratory studies are explained, and how a laboratory is judged in proficiency testing schemes is described. Accreditation to ISO 17025 or OECD GLP is nearly obligatory for laboratories of any pretension to quality. Here the reader will find an introduction to the requirements and philosophy of accreditation. Whether completing a degree course in chemistry or working in a busy analytical laboratory, this book is a single source for an introduction into quality assurance.Customer Reviews:

Borroff is the Best!.......2006-03-05
Excellent translation.......2002-11-02
This poem originally was very alliterative, and Borroff has preserved much of that. Sir Gawain is one of the greatest of the Arthurian legends, and this translation preserves much of the poems integrity. This is definitely a must have for any student of early English poetry or Arthurian legend.
The other works, Pearl and Patience, are believed to share the same author as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. These, too, are excellent poems. This would be a great addition to any collection.
Best modern translation.......2002-10-21
