    Book Description

Research policy favours projects that integrate disciplinary knowledge and involve non-academic stakeholders. Consequently, integrative concepts – interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity – are gaining currency in landscape research and planning. Researchers are excited by the prospect of merging disciplinary and non-academic expertise to improve their understanding and performance, but often struggle with the challenges of operationalizing integration.

This book provides guidelines for those coping with these challenges, whether they are members of an integrative research team or individuals working on a problem that demands integration. They must define terminology, choose appropriate methodologies, overcome epistemological barriers and cope with the high expectations of some stakeholders while encouraging others to participate at all.

The book deals with the development of integrative theory and concepts, the development of integrative tools and methods, training and education for integration, and the application of integrative concepts in landscape research. As it also presents examples of successful integrative PhD studies, it is not only valuable for experienced scientists but will also help other PhD students find their way in integrative research.

                  Description:
The suitability of a xanthone derivative, 1-hydroxy-3-methyl-9H-xanthen-9-one (HMX) as a neutral ionophore for the preparation of a polyvinylchloride (PVC) membrane electrode for aluminum(III) ions was investigated. The prepared electrode exhibits a Nernstian response for Al^3^+ ions over a wide concentration range (1.0x10^-^6 to 1.6x10^-^1M) with a limit of detection 6.0x10^-^7M. It has a relatively fast response time and can be used for at least three months without any considerable divergence in potentials. The proposed membrane electrode revealed very good selectivity for Al^3^+ ions over a wide variety of other cations and could be used at a working pH range of 3.0-8.5. It was used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of aluminum ions with EDTA and in the determination of Al^3^+ in different real samples.

                    Description:
The utility of carbon as a new component in a highly selective and sensitive coated wire electrode (CWE) for silver ion using 2-[(2-{2-[(2-carboxyphenyl)sulfanyl]ethoxy}ethyl)sulfanyl]benzoic acid as ionophore is demonstrated. This CWE exhibits a good Nernstian slope of 59.0 +/- 1mV per decade in a wide linear concentration range of 2. 0 x 10^-^8 to 1.0 x 10^-^2M for AgNO"3. The detection limit of this electrode is 1.2 x 10^-^8M of AgNO"3. This sensor has a short response time of about 10s and could be used in a pH range of 2.5-8.7. High selectivity was obtained over seventeen various metal ions. The electrode is reproducible and stable for a period of two months. The proposed electrode has been used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration. This CWE was successfully applied in determination of silver in sulphadiazine cream and in fruit juice matrixes.

                      Description:
Novel 1,3-alternate thiacalix[4]mono- and biscrown-6 ethers were studied as ionophores in poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrodes. Their selectivity behavior was characterized with respect to large number of cations, including potential interferents in environmental samples, and the membrane composition was optimized for cesium ion response. Among the ionophores, 1,3-alternate thiacalix[4]mono(crown-6) ether showed, especially high selectivity for cesium over other alkali-metal ions. Transition and heavy metal ions did not interfere seriously with the electrode response, which indicates that the bridging sulfur atoms do not take part in the ion recognition process. The potentiometric cesium responses of all electrodes involved in this study were found close to Nernstian and the detection limits were lower than 10^-^7M. The Cs^+/Na^+ selectivity of the different ionophore-based sensors and the solvent extraction ability of the ligands were interpreted based on the respective constants of complex formation.

                        Description:
Derivatives of phenoxazine dyes serve as chromoionophores in the field of chemical sensors. By studying the changes of the distribution of membrane components in ETH 5294 based, pH sensitive, ion-selective membranes using spectroelectrochemical microscopy (SpECM), the decay in the concentration of the protonated chromoionophore was generally much larger than expected upon previous studies. These recorded changes could not be interpreted with the leaching of the protonated or unprotonated forms of ETH 5294 or the tetraphenyl borate derivatives embedded in the membrane. Similarly, the changes could not be explained by the photochemical decomposition of the tetraphenyl borate derivatives (tetraphenyl borate, TPB^- or tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate, TpClPB^-). The decrease in the absorbance value measured at 660nm, at the absorbance maximum of the protonated chromoionophore has been linked to the photochemically initiated, singlet oxygen mediated decomposition of ETH 5294. The decomposition occurs only if the wavelength of the illuminating light is larger than ~580nm, and the rate of decomposition is facilitated by the presence of certain anions in the membrane (TPB^-, and TpClPB^-) and in the sample solution (Br^-, I^-, and Cl^-) as they were penetrating the membrane by acid coextraction. On the other hand, the protonated chromoionophore was found to be stable in membranes cast with tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) phenyl] borate anion (TFPB) or in acidic solutions of NO"3^-, ClO"4^-, SO"4^-, TFPB^- and citrate anions. In comparison to ETH 5294 (chromoionophore I), ETH 2439 (chromoionophore II) was found completely stable, and the decomposition of ETH 5350 (chromoionophore III) was also hardly detectable. In our view, in the light of the experimental results summarized in this study some of the widely accepted views and practices in chromoionophore based sensors research should be changed and some of the results should be reevaluated.

                          Book Description

Function transformations, which include linear integral transformations, are some of the most important mathematical tools for solving problems in all areas of engineering and the physical sciences. They allow one to quickly solve a problem by breaking it down into a series of smaller, more manageable problems. The author has compiled the most important and widely used of these function transforms in applied mathematics and electrical engineering. In addition to classical transforms, newer transforms such as wavelets, Zak, and Radon are included. The book is neither a table of transforms nor a textbook, but it is a source book that provides quick and easy access to the most important properties and formulas of function and generalized function transformations. It is organized for convenient reference, with chapters broken down into the following sections:

'Monsieur de Maupassant has never before been so clever.' Henry James Henry James's admiration for 'this masterly little novel' has been echoed throughout the twentieth century by readers of Pierre et Jean. It marked a turning-point in the development of French fiction, situated as it is between traditional social realism and the psychological novel. It is recognized as a classic study of filial jealousy, triggered by one of the two brothers of its title finding himself the sole inheritor of the fortune of his mother's former lover. Pierre et Jean is set in Le Havre in the 1880s and is notable for its evocation of the Normandy coastline captured by the Impressionists. But Maupassant's achievement is to have woven from this simple plot in a maritime context a brilliantly crafted exploration of the complexities at the heart of family life.

                          Customer Reviews:

                          5 out of 5 stars A Classic Short Story.......2007-05-29

This has to be one of the nicest novella's I have ever had the pleasure of perusing. I guess one should expect nothing less from this Maupassant masterpiece. After all, Maupassant (along with Chekov) is considered one of the founding fathers of the modern day short story, and this is considered to be his greatest work. There is more to this book than the old Cain and Abel story of sibling rivalry. It's also a telling tale of filial love, forgiveness, and the steadfast, unconditional love of a mother. It's very powerfully told with all the passion and emotion one would expect from a disciple of Flaubert and a friend of both Zola & Turgenev.

I will definitely be placing this work on my top shelf of favorites. It is one of those rare stories that will leave you thinking about it long after you turn the last page. Maupassant created a character in Pierre that is so sublimely human, such a complex, abstruse, big ball of paradox. At times, it is easy to despise him and at other times you can't help but identify with, and feel compassion for the man. After all, how heartless can one be not to sympathize with a man who has gone his whole entire life playing second fiddle to his more attractive, amicable, and younger brother Jean. Jean gets the girl, he gets the inheritance, gets the luxury flat Pierre originally had his sights on, and most importantly perhaps (because this has been going on since childhood) Jean is his parent's favorite. Come now, it's so easy to pass judgment on this man, but who among us wouldn't be experiencing the same inner torment that plagues Pierre?

"There was within him some little place that hurt, one of those almost imperceptible bruises that cannot be located, yet fidget, tire, depress and irritate you, an unidentifiable, trifling pain, a sort of seed of unhappiness."

                          I highly recommend this one!

                          5 out of 5 stars Great edition.......2006-04-28

I haven't seen any other edition of this novella, but this one is very good in analysis. It is a pleasure to read the footnotes while reading the book, as if you are listening to a discussion in a French literature class.

                          5 out of 5 stars doubtful paternity.......2004-07-18

This is a short novel, easy to follow, and enjoyable to read.

Here's what it's about basically. There's these two brothers, right?--as the title indicates. One of them gets a really nice inheritance from a family friend. The other brother gets NOTHING. He's jealous of his brother for his good fortune, and gets suspicious about WHY his brother got the inheritance. He finds out that it's because their mother had an affair with the family friend and his brother was born illegitimately from the affair. He confronts his mother about it and she admits it. That's why his brother got the inheritance, because he was the family friend's true son, it was a shameful secret that the mother kept from her husband (their father). That's all there is to it. It's not a complex book and the story's pretty simple, but the underlying psychology is really interesting and the book is very well-written--very tight and engaging. Maupassant's best novel, I would say.

5 out of 5 stars A STUDY OF FAMILY RELATIONS.......2003-03-13

WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED TO HAPPEN IN A FAMILY WHEN ONE OF ITS MEMBERS INHERITS A LARGE SUM OF MONEY? EVERYBODY IS HAPPIER AND BETTER OFF, RIGHT? WRONG! AS WE SEE FROM THIS STORY, THE WHOLE FABRIC OF THE FAMILY CAN BECOME TORN. YET, BY EMPLOYING SOME SUBTLE TACTICS, MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY CAN FIND A WAY TO STAY TOGETHER. AT A BIG PRICE THOUGH, BECAUSE ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY HAS TO HOLD HIMSELF ALOOF IN ORDER TO PRESERVE FAMILY BOUNDS. A VERY DELICATE STUDY OF THE SUBJECT!

                          5 out of 5 stars Sibling Rivalry.......2002-11-05

This short novel just blew me away with intense and detailed characterzations and a plot that builds tension based on the interaction between the members of a family that is nearly rocked by a seemingly positive development. The two grown brothers are established as near opposites in almost every detail and when one inherits money from an old family acquaintance the reason behind their differences becomes the driving force of the story and it's revelation nearly rips the family apart.
A short novel that will stay with you for some time after reading it.

The novel that marks the turning point in French fiction, "Pierre et Jean" is situated between social realism and psycholgical fiction. Set in Le Havre in the 1880s, Maupassant's masterful little novel is admired by many as a classic study of filial jealousy.
