Book Description
A clear, comprehensive treatment of the subject, Environmental Statistics with S-PLUS surveys the vast array of statistical methods used to collect and analyze environmental data. The book explains what these methods are, how to use them, and where to find references to them. In addition, it provides insight into what to think about before you collect environmental data, how to collect the data, and how to make sense of it after collection. A unique and powerful feature of the book is its integration with the commercially available software package S-Plus and the add-on modules EnvironmentalStats for S-PLUS, S+SpatialStats, and S-PLUS for ArcView. The book presents data sets to explain statistical methods, and then shows how to implement these methods by providing the commands for and the results from the software. This survey of statistical methods, definitions, and concepts helps you collect and effectively analyze data for environmental pollution problems. Using the S-PLUS software in conjunction with this text will no doubt increase understanding of the methods.
Customer Reviews:
This is a terrible textbook!.......2003-03-07
It's hard to know where to start...
1) The explanations of statistical concepts are not well organized. If you've never had statistics before, prepare to be confused. If you have had it before, prepare to be bored. There is no middle ground with this book.
2) Since this is really a book on how to use S-PLUS, there must be a lot of material about how S-PLUS works, right? WRONG! When the book begins to explain how to use S-PLUS, it is given in a plug-and-chug format. There is really no explanation of how the commands work, just a list of steps to give you the results or plots that are shown in the book. This book does not teach, it merely lists.
3) There are also a lot of inconsistencies in the book. There are "elementary" homework problems that are not possible to do because of the way S-PLUS is set up. Even one of the authors of the book (who happens to be my professor) doesn't know how to do them.
Overall, this book is definitely NOT worth the money.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to complex variable theory and its applications to current engineering problems and is designed to make the fundamentals of the subject more easily accessible to readers who have little inclination to wade through the rigors of the axiomatic approach. Modeled after standard calculus books--both in level of exposition and layout--it incorporates physical applications throughout, so that the mathematical methodology appears less sterile to engineers. It makes frequent use of analogies from elementary calculus or algebra to introduce complex concepts, includes fully worked examples, and provides a dual heuristic/analytic discussion of all topics. A downloadable MATLAB toolbox--a state-of-the-art computer aid--is available.
Complex Numbers. Analytic Functions. Elementary Functions. Complex Integration. Series Representations for Analytic Functions. Residue Theory. Conformal Mapping. The Transforms of Applied Mathematics. MATLAB ToolBox for Visualization of Conformal Maps. Numerical Construction of Conformal Maps. Table of Conformal Mappings. Features coverage of Julia Sets; modern exposition of the use of complex numbers in linear analysis (e.g., AC circuits, kinematics, signal processing); applications of complex algebra in celestial mechanics and gear kinematics; and an introduction to Cauchy integrals and the Sokhotskyi-Plemeij formulas.
For mathematicians and engineers interested in Complex Analysis and Mathematical Physics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2006-04-23
First let me say that this book was an introduction to the subject for me. After reading the first six chapters, and working through most of the problems, I have to say this book is great. I highly recommend this to anyone who is learning on there own. In particular, the chapter on residues is excellent. The chapter on series is also good, although I would have liked more worked examples for proofs involving uniform convergence. Also, a little more emphasis on the Arguement would have been nice. Nevertheless, 5/5 for this one, it is extremely well written and the authors really provide motivation for the theorems to come. This is definitely one of the best math books I have read. Great buy, worth every penny.
Good Introductory Book.......2004-01-28
This was the book that I learned Complex Analysis from. Definitely made the subject accessible to pretty much any reader. Plenty of exercises: some more theoretical, some more applied. It skillfully straddles the gap between being a theoretical math book and a math book for people with more applied aims (such as engineers). Most topics are covered thoroughly, though certain more complicated subjects such as winding number are left out for simplicity.
This book definitely prepared me for tackling the dense, theoretical, and exceptional "Complex Analysis" by Ahlfors. I'd recommend it as an introductory book for anyone trying to get into the subject who is intimidated by Ahlfors, as well as for anyone who is only interested in the essential commonly-applied tools.
down to earth book for people like you and me.......2001-12-10
I have just finished a class using this book, and on the whole its done a good job. I didn't find it in any way super special or anything, but I could read it and understand it. As far as math books go that is pretty good. Lots of exercises with answers in the back, which is what you need. Usually there are worked out examples of the most standard problems, but not always, e.g. there is no example of residue calculus with a Log function.

One of the best books on the subject.......2002-01-06
...
The writer introduces the subject from elementary to difficult subects. Partiuclarly good is the section on the integration of complex variables. The writer first introduce the concept of line integrals so the readers have a concept on that before going furhter.
Awesome book!.......1999-04-27
I learned complex variable theory on my own from this book and it was a very fun process. The treatment proceeds similar to a normal calculus textbook. Clear examples, and interesting problems are also included. In fact, this book has more info here than most others. At 600+ pp. it's a solid reference.
Also, this is the only such book I've seen with exercise answers included in the back. No other complex variable book out there (that i've seen) does this for some reason.
I highly recommend this title.
A well written textbook.......1998-12-29
Free of fancy pedagogical "features," such as color-coded regions of text and useless chapter summaries. You actually have to read (or at least skim) the book to find a few of the important points. Once you find them, you are treated to very well written (and also very clear and exact) definitions, explanations, and examples.
Great book!.......1998-12-08
I borrowed this book from a friend and taught myself complex varible theory. The book is so well-written that I had few problems doing so. Since the book's primary audience is engineering students, there probably are, understandably, more rigorous treatments of the subject elsewhere. Overall, though, an outstanding text. I'm trying to convince my friend otherwise so I can purchase his!
A very good book for complex variables with many examples........1998-09-24
I used this textbook in my junior year of Electrical Engineering. This book carefully explains the important theorems and concepts of Engineering mathematics. It is also filled with worked out example problems that make learning all the more easier. I highly regard this book.

Book Description
Complex numbers can be viewed in several ways: as an element in a field, as a point in the plane, and as a two-dimensional vector. Examined properly, each perspective provides crucial insight into the interrelations between the complex number system and its parent, the real number system. The authors explore these relationships by adopting both generalization and specialization methods to move from real variables to complex variables, and vice versa, while simultaneously examining their analytic and geometric characteristics, using geometry to illustrate analytic concepts and employing analysis to unravel geometric notions.
The engaging exposition is replete with discussions, remarks, questions, and exercises, motivating not only understanding on the part of the reader, but also developing the tools needed to think critically about mathematical problems. This focus involves a careful examination of the methods and assumptions underlying various alternative routes that lead to the same destination.
The material includes numerous examples and applications relevant to engineering students, along with some techniques to evaluate various types of integrals. The book may serve as a text for an undergraduate course in complex variables designed for scientists and engineers or for mathematics majors interested in further pursuing the general theory of complex analysis. The only prerequistite is a basic knowledge of advanced calculus. The presentation is also ideally suited for self-study.

Book Description
With a style that combined biting sarcasm with the "language of the free lunch counter," Henry Louis Mencken shook politics and politicians for nearly half a century. Now, fifty years after Mencken's death, the Johns Hopkins University Press announces The Buncombe Collection, newly packaged editions of nine Mencken classics: Happy Days, Heathen Days, Newspaper Days, Prejudices, Treatise on the Gods, On Politics, Thirty-Five Years of Newspaper Work, Minority Report, and A Second Mencken Chrestomathy.
Most of these autobiographical writings first appeared in the New Yorker. Here Mencken recalls memories of a safe and happy boyhood in the Baltimore of the 1880s.
Customer Reviews:
Mencken on his nonage.......2000-01-11
H.L. Mencken temporarily resigned from his job as a newspaper columnist before the Second World War, deeming his political opinions too controversial for print. In the ensuing interregnal period, he focused his attention on writing a series of memoirs, which later turned into a three volume autobiography, of which Happy Days is the first part. In its pages, he relates his early fascination with police officers, food, literature and pedagogues, subjects that forever interested him. He also, astonishingly, recounts successful athletic exploits (astonishing because he grew into a rotund and stumpy man, who considered sports "nonsensical"). Readers familiar with Mencken's caustic columns will enjoy learning how his strong opinions were formed. Readers unfamiliar with him should still find this book highly palatable, for it is colorfully written, interfusing "the language of the free lunch counter" with latin phrases and searing adjectives. This memoir is as well-written as later newspaper columnist Russell Baker's "Growing Up," but is a hell of a lot funnier.
