Book Description

The advent of ever more sophisticated molecular manipulation techniques has made it clear that cellular systems are far more complex and dynamic than previously thought. At the same time, experimental techniques are providing an almost overwhelming amount of new data. It is increasingly apparent that linking molecular and cellular structure to function will require the use of new computational tools.

This book provides specific examples, across a wide range of molecular and cellular systems, of how modeling techniques can be used to explore functionally relevant molecular and cellular relationships. The modeling techniques covered are applicable to cell, developmental, structural, and mathematical biology; genetics; and computational neuroscience. The book, intended as a primer for both theoretical and experimental biologists, is organized in two parts: models of gene activity and models of interactions among gene products. Modeling examples are provided at several scales for each subject. Each chapter includes an overview of the biological system in question and extensive references to important work in the area.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but not information I can use.......2004-05-03

Regulatory networks are central to every aspect of computational biology. Determining what they are, and what genes, proteins, and post-translational modifications interact is a major and exciting field of study.

I just didn't come away from this book with that excitement. I was hoping for more about the large-scale regulation networks, but these papers go down to the quantum mechanics of interactions between pairs of molecules. I appreciate that the exact interactions matter, and that computation is probably the only way to examine some kinds of interactions (e.g. the ones in lethal mutations). It's just not what I think of as a "network."

I was also hoping for some more specifics about the computation techniques. There were some interesting insights here. For example, I never thought about the similarities between steady state chemical equilibrium and steady state Markov model behavior before, but the formalisms have striking similarities. I was also interested in some of the information-based measures for determining how well a model represents a system. I learned that the statistical assumptions behind normal chemical "equilibrium" break down at the scale of bacteria - instead, presence or absence of individual molecules matters more. Still, those were isolated kinds of facts and never came together into a whole for me.

The range of views was worthwhile. On the whole, though, the models all seemed very low-level to me, probably not well suited to handling more than a few dozen interactions, and the computation specifics were not always explicit. I'm still looking for a book with more information that I can apply directly.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of the field.......2001-08-04

An excellent survey for anyone contemplating doing research in this area. The authors make a special effort to identify the open research problems, what has been done to date and what there is very little of. This book will bridge the gap for anyone with a background in Molecular Biology that wants to build computer models for cellular and genetic activities. It is especially focused on gene regulation, but also covers other modeling areas such as diffusion. In reading this book, you will appreciatge both the good start this field is off to, but also the long way to go before a complete cell can be modeled. A great area to do pioneering work.

5 out of 5 stars it's about time!!!.......2001-04-03

For many years, biologists have been accumulating descriptions of biological "parts" with an almost complete lack of a framework for understanding how those parts might really work together. This book represents the first and so far only example I have seen of an effort to describe modeling techniques that are right now being developed to construct such a framework. There are other books on "computational biology", but most of them are focused only on measuring and comparing different strands of molecules -- this book describes how computational techniques are starting to be applied to actually trying to understand how those molecules work together to generate life. On the outside jacket of the book, Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Science, AND the guy whose book on molecular biology I had to buy for a lot of money when I was in college, describes the authors of this book as being "Brave". I would say it is an introduction to a "Brave New World". This has to be where biology is going -- Each of the chapters are written by different people, and as such there is some variation in readability. I also wish that the color illustrations were part of the chapter they refer to instead of being grouped in the middle. But most of the chapters start with enough of an overview to be understandable to anyone with a decent background in biology. And WOW -- biology is going to get much more exciting!! Oh one other thing -- the art on the inside of the jacket is wonderful - especially in contrast to the black cover with its standard diagram of metabolism -- I wonder if there is a message there :-) .

            Description:
An analytical methodology was developed for the detection and quantitation of diazepam in cream biscuits (food matrix constituting high amount of fat, proteins, carbohydrates and minerals) which are used for criminal motives. Extraction was by ethanol and subsequently by a mixture of methanol:acetonitrile:tetrahydrofuran:water (15:55:4:26v/v). The quantitation (medazepam as internal standard) was carried out by densitometric scanning of the chromatogram at a wavelength of 230nm. The limit of detection of diazepam in the samples was estimated as 7.5ng per 6mm band with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3:1 and limit of quantitation of diazepam in the samples was estimated as 28ng per 6mm band with a signal-to-noise ratio of 10:1. The diazepam detected in the biscuit was found to be in the range of 26-41@mg/g. Standard diazepam was spiked to sample biscuits at three levels (100, 500 and 1000@mg/g) and recoveries were found to be 93%. The mean R"F values of diazepam and medazepam are 0.6 and 0.47, respectively. The relative standard deviations of diazepam in biscuit samples were found to be 0.06% for R"F and 0.62% for peak area within the plate and 0.35% for R"F and 2.15% for peak area among the plates. The method is rapid and reliable for qualitative and quantitative analysis of cream biscuits or similar food matrix laced with diazepam and can be used by law enforcement laboratories for routine analysis.

                Book Description

This work fills an important gap in the literature by providing an important link between MAPLE and its successful use in solving problems in Operations Research (OR). The symbolic, numerical, and graphical aspects of MAPLE make this software package an ideal tool for treating certain OR problems and providing descriptive and optimization-based analyses of deterministic and stochastic models. Detailed is MAPLE's treatment of some of the mathematical techniques used in OR modeling: e.g., algebra and calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, linear algebra, transform methods, and probability theory.

A number of examples of OR techniques and applications are presented, such as linear and nonlinear programming, dynamic programming, stochastic processes, inventory models, queueing systems, and simulation. Throughout the text MAPLE statements used in the solutions of problems are clearly explained. At the same time, technical background material is presented in a rigorous mathematical manner to reach the OR novice and professional. Numerous end-of- chapter exercises, a good bibliography and overall index at the end of the book are also included, as well as MAPLE worksheets that are easily downloadable from the author's website at www.business.mcmaster.ca/msis/profs/parlar, or from the Birkhauser website at www.birkhauser.com/cgi-win/ISBN/0-8176-4165-3.

The book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in operations research, management science departments of business schools, industrial and systems engineering, economics, and mathematics. As a self-study resource, the text can be used by researchers and practitioners who want a quick overview of MAPLE's usefulness in solving realistic OR problems that would be difficult or impossible to solve with other software packages.

The fall brings season brings three more antic selections from comic genius, P. G. Wodehouse. In Summer Lightning, the Honorable Galahad Threepwood has decided to write his memoirs and everyone dives for cover; meanwhile, Lord Emsworth's prize pig has been stolen, and the castle is abuzz with imposters all pretending to be one another.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars Terrific Wodehouse.......2007-04-10

Although Wodehouse prided himself on his intricately-woven plots, his books succeed largely because of brilliant dialogue and humorous situations. Summer Lightning, written during Wodehouse's long creative peak, succeeds on all levels. A stolen pig, an embarrassing memoir, young love, and doddering old aristrocrats keep the action moving. Thoroughly-enjoyable escapist fare. In this Blandings Castle episode, Lord Emsworth is a relatively minor character and his son, Freddie Threepwood, is all but nonexistent, but Wodehouse's other characters are so amusing that this book succeeds nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars More Piggish Capers at Blandings Castle.......2004-12-30

Summer Lightning is one of the several delightful books in the Blandings Castle series by P.G. Wodehouse. Summer Lightning is better than many other P.G. Wodehouse books in that the plot and character development are more thorough than most which keeps the fun going longer.

Clarence, the ninth Earl of Emsworth, is at home in his castle in Shropshire where he dotes on his famous prize-winning pig, the Empress of Blandings. Having dispatched his earlier secretary, Baxter, Clarence is at peace contemplating how his pig will win again when he learns from his brother Galahad (Gally) that the neighbor's pig man is offering 3:1 odds against the Empress. Clarence and Gally presume that their neighbor, Sir Gregory Parsloe is planning to knobble the Empress. Their worst fears are borne out when the Empress disappears!

At the same time, Parsloe lives in fear that Gally will publish old stories about his wild younger days in Gally's new book. Clarence's and Gally's sister Connie wants to stop publication as well. Soon the castle is overrun with manuscript thieves!

At the same time, love is in the air. Clarence's new secretary, Hugo Carmody, is secretly and unsuitably in love with Millicent Threepwood, niece to Clarence, Connie and Gally, and Millicent is in love with him. But they need to get some financial help to pull off the merger.

Ronald Fish, a wealthy young man whose money is tied with Clarence, is also in love with an unsuitable person . . . one Sue Brown who is a chorus girl. Ronnie has proven himself to be a poor judge of investments in the past, and Clarence is skeptical of allowing any more money. It doesn't help when Clarence finds that Ronnie doesn't truly share his love of pigs!

Will love win out? Of course! It's a P.G. Wodehouse book. But before love wins, humor will take the day in many silly scenes worthy of Shakespeare's best in the forest of Arden.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Wodehouse.......1999-11-22

Summer Lightening is the best Wodehouse novel, introducing many elements for the first time reader which reappear in many other Blandings Castle books. The major elements are: the prize pig called Empress of Blandings, a secretary named Baxter who is very intelligent but not liked by Lord Emsworth, who is the family head but detests everything except the pig, his younger brother Galahad, who is at peak of health by avoiding all healthy stuff, and their imperial sisters who control everyone around them. Read the book and savour.

5 out of 5 stars Blandings at its best, with the arrival of Gally.......1998-07-13

The Hon. Galahad Threepwood, younger brother of Lord Emsworth, is at Blandings Castle writing his memoirs, much to the consternation of their sister, Lady Constance Keeble, and many blue-blooded neighbors. Amid this, young love becomes repeatedly unstuck, imposters arrive, Baxter returns, and The Empress of Blandings is stolen. All seems lost, until ...

This may be the best of the Blandings series. It introduced Gally, a charming, disreputable younger son of an Earl whose main crimes are enjoying life and refusing to be a snob. He's an older gentleman who is rarely without a whisky in his hand or a story on his lips. If you've never read Wodehouse's Blandings books, this is a good place to start, followed by its sequel, Heavy Wather.

I have read and reread the first story so many times...the life of a desolate little boy's life...so finely detailed so heart rending, so spatial. As a Jamaican woman and an architect, I used this story in my thesis for the representation of a Jamaican life in a Jamaican landscape. If you want to know about my people, this is a beautiful glimpse into the way we talk about ourselves to each other.

5 out of 5 stars I still have fond memories from my school days.......2002-11-25

I studied this book for literature when I was in high school and thoroughly enjoyed it. Each story focuses on the lives of children from different economical and social backgrounds in Jamaica, each one experiencing a different form of conflict as they face a critical stage of their development. Most of the stories are written in Jamaican dialect which is rich and colorful allowing the reader a great insight into rural Jamaica and the way of life that is unique to the scenes of the stories.

Summer Lightning is a great love story as well as being a spooky thriller. The writing makes all the events seem so very possible. Especially the nerdy neighbor! Read it soon because the author is bound to appear on Oprah!

                    5 out of 5 stars Fond Memories.......2000-04-07

Its been 13 years since I read this book (when I was 10), but I can still remember the empathic experience afforded by Richards' skillful writing. I remember the thrills of sneaking into a tomato warehouse to sample the sweetiest juciest tomatoes ever pilfered, and the exhilaration of running away once I'd been discovered. I remember the bond with an old man who needed the benefit of youth like I needed the benefit of wisdom. We were a great pair, and he taught me how to catch catfish in a most interesting way. I remember terrifying my teacher and being the best little hellion I could be, and I remember the responsibility I shouldered when I had to, when I crossed a point, on a raft, with a friend in peril, and the everglades my only obstacle to saving him...when I took a step closer to becoming a man. I am writing about this book because it was one of the most memorable of my youth, and because it still sometimes paints on the canvas of my dreams.

                    5 out of 5 stars A delightful True-Fiction!.......2000-03-15

An amazing look at childhood from the perspective of an adult woman. Wish I'd known McCree and Terry when I was six!

4 out of 5 stars For the kid in everyone.......1999-08-02

A delightful Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn type novel. Easy reading, suitable for age 13 and up, but very enjoyable for all ages. The characters are very lovable, and it is easy to identify with Terry, the mischevious 6-year-old, if you've ever been a kid and had his spirit.

                    5 out of 5 stars A "must read"for all ages.......1998-08-29

"Summer Lightening" is about the travails of growing up, a youngster's need to be understood by authority figures imposed upon him by Society and the various conflicts undergone by him. It's a book which depicts warmth, where characters have life in them and about a context relevant to society in general. It's a book about loving, being loved, sharing and proving the ancient adage of 'The more you give, the more you get.' Books of a similar genre would be " Catcher in the Rye"," To kill a Mockingbird". The central character is amazing and one wishes ardently for a similar colourful childhood.
