Bone Mechanics Handbook, Second Edition
ASIN: 0691128049 |
Book Description
This is a comprehensive and accessible overview of what is known about the structure and mechanics of bone, bones, and teeth. In it, John Currey incorporates critical new concepts and findings from the two decades of research since the publication of his highly regarded The Mechanical Adaptations of Bones. Crucially, Currey shows how bone structure and bone's mechanical properties are intimately bound up with each other and how the mechanical properties of the material interact with the structure of whole bones to produce an adapted structure.
For bone tissue, the book discusses stiffness, strength, viscoelasticity, fatigue, and fracture mechanics properties. For whole bones, subjects dealt with include buckling, the optimum hollowness of long bones, impact fracture, and properties of cancellous bone. The effects of mineralization on stiffness and toughness and the role of microcracking in the fracture process receive particular attention. As a zoologist, Currey views bone and bones as solutions to the design problems that vertebrates have faced during their evolution and throughout the book considers what bones have been adapted to do. He covers the full range of bones and bony tissues, as well as dentin and enamel, and uses both human and non-human examples.
Copiously illustrated, engagingly written, and assuming little in the way of prior knowledge or mathematical background, Bones is both an ideal introduction to the field and also a reference sure to be frequently consulted by practicing researchers.

Book Description
In the 1990s, a new type of learning algorithm was developed, based on results from statistical learning theory: the Support Vector Machine (SVM). This gave rise to a new class of theoretically elegant learning machines that use a central concept of SVMs—-kernels--for a number of learning tasks. Kernel machines provide a modular framework that can be adapted to different tasks and domains by the choice of the kernel function and the base algorithm. They are replacing neural networks in a variety of fields, including engineering, information retrieval, and bioinformatics.
Learning with Kernels provides an introduction to SVMs and related kernel methods. Although the book begins with the basics, it also includes the latest research. It provides all of the concepts necessary to enable a reader equipped with some basic mathematical knowledge to enter the world of machine learning using theoretically well-founded yet easy-to-use kernel algorithms and to understand and apply the powerful algorithms that have been developed over the last few years.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview of the theory of kernel-based methods.......2007-06-21
This book is at the right level if you are already strong in Machine Learning theory. (e.g. Tom Mitchell's "Machine Learning").
Note that it is already getting somewhat dated. It for example includes little information on kernels for discreate structured input, such as trees and graphs.
In depth review of kernel methods in machine learning.......2005-10-24
Great book, but a word of caution, it is not for the novice.
Book assumes a lot of background in functional analysis and
probability. True, it has extensive appendixes but they are
short-handing the relevant materials only. However, having said
that, this is a book worth struggling with even if you have not
yet got the intuitions in the above mentioned disciplines.
It is worthwhile (at least as I can tell) to read the book
skipping the tool chapters (2-6) going back to them when one has
a point where those are needed. I found that to be much easier
as it provides a concrete use of the methods putting them
in context.
best book of kernel methods.......2004-07-10
It is the best book on kernel methods. It covers a wide range of subjects.
The best thing is that after finishing one or two basic chapters, you can read the rest of the book in any order; most chapters are almost independent to each other. At the beginning of a chapter, the authors list the prerequistites, so a reader knows whether he will be able to understand the chapter.
For now the book still reflects the state of art. But it is a fast changing field. I hope the authors will update the book in the future.
interesting introduction to support vector machine learning.......2002-03-21
The authors are young researchers who did their Ph.D. research in this rapidly developing branch of pattern recognition. Because they are young and are at the state of the art in the filed the book has sevral advantages and disadvantages and what I see as a disadvantage someone else might view as an advantage. Anyway here is my view.
Advantage 1: Pattern recognition is a field of many disciplines. It has been studied by statisticians, mathematician, probabilists and engineering and people that call themselves computer scientists specializing in artificial intelligence. The field is old and has a long history but each discipline has developed their own jargon and many times the wheel has been reinvented. The advantage of this book is that these young scientists don't see that awful history. They have learned and mastered their subject in a basically engineering jargon but they include many concepts from statistics and statistical learning theory that are not common to engineering texts. This includes such topics as robust regression, ridge regression and spline estimation. Much of the classical statistical literature is cited. The book contains over 600 references including much of the authors own work.
Disadvantage 1: Because they are young they miss some of the important historical literature and key texts. I found it a little disappointing that the bootstrap which is a statistical tool that has played a major role in discriminant analysis (particularly in the estimation of classification error rates) was completely overlooked. Also although many important texts on pattern recognition, machine learning and discriminant analysis are cited the fine text by McLachlan is overlooked as is the recent relevant text by Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman.
Advantage 2: This book highlights the work of Vapnik and Chervonenkis and provides nice concise descriptions that one can easily refer to when needed. The mathematics is deep and includes reproducing kernel Hilbert space and many important properties from functional analysis and statistical theory.
Disadvantage 2: The authors are more experienced at writing professional papers than at writing text books. Consequently the book does not flow well and the authors freely admit in their preface that it is best not to read the book in sequential order but rather to take the suggestions in the preface that differ based on the readers background and interest.
Having said all this, for someone like me, who is very knowledgeable about statistical pattern recognition this is a great text for getting me up to speed on an exciting new area that I know very little about. I became curious about it when I started reading Vapnik recently.
I am hoping that a careful reading of this book will give me an intuition about why this approach that incorporates kernel methods can be a powerful tool in pattern recognition and classification.
This book should be a useful reference for anyone interested in this research area. It could be used in an engineering or statistics course in pattern recognition at either the undergraduate or graduate levels depending on what material is covered.
In a recent communication with Bernhard Scholkopf I learned that his book was sent for publication before the Hastie et al. book went to press. So that is the only reason it wasn't referenced. I think that point is worth my mentioning in an editing of this review. Also on reflection I do not think the disadvantages are so great as to remove a star. So it is 5 stars for them.
I can only hope that they will reference the work of McLachlan and Hastie et al. in their future books and research on this subject.
Detailed and comprehensive.......2002-01-30
This book should be on the bookshell of anyone interested in kernel methods. The authors managed to make a clear and comprehensive enough textbook such that it is well suited for graduate students. But it also contains all the state of the art results of the domain, and its scope is wider than other similar books. For this reason, this book should be very useful to any researcher in the machine learning field.

A scholar of fairy tales, Maria Tatar, provides a fascinating introduction about the history and meaning of the stories assembled by the Brothers Grimm. She writes, for example, "We now know that the stories collected in the nineteenth-century folktale anthologies ...had their origins in an irreverent peasant culture that arose in conscious opposition to the feudal state's ruling class. By overdoing it in the realm of storytelling, these narrators were able to alleviate--if only temporarily--some of the tedium that marked the daily life of their audience ... [These tales] can be seen as the ancestors of our urban legends about vanishing hitchhikers and cats accidentally caught in the dryer or as the preliterate equivalents of tabloid tales describing headless bodies found in topless bars. But in many ways, it is the horror film to which the matter and manner of these folktales has most conspicuously migrated. Like horror films, folktales trade in the sensational--breaking taboos and enacting the forbidden with uninhibited energy."
The text of the 19 tales in this collection is based on the 1822 edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Nursery and Household Tales) by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm--before the tales were expurgated and rewritten to make them more "suitable" for children. It's bound in a handsome faux-antique format, and lavishly illustrated by Tracy Arah Dockray (15 full-page color paintings, and a black-and-white drawing on nearly every page). Most of the tales will be unfamiliar to American and English readers, who may be surprised by the graphic descriptions of incest, murder, mutilation, and cannibalism. Chronicle Books has done us a service in helping restore to our adult culture these vivid, evocative folktales. --Fiona Webster
Book Description
Murder, kidnapping, cruel and unusual punishment, violent revenge these are not the bedtime stories mummy used to read. Newly reissued with a fresh cover, Grimm's Grimmest presents nineteen original, unsanitized, wholly unholy tales as they were first collected by the Brothers Grimm circa 1822 all fiendishly illustrated. The tales harken back to a time when travelers risked roasting or worse, and bad manners yielded frightful consequences. An insightful introduction makes sense of the mayhem, shedding light on how the Grimm brothers went from macabre to mainstream in fairly short order. From the true horror of Aschenputtel (the original Cinderella story) to Rapunzel's dark secret, Grimm's Grimmest features the authentic stories born long ago in the land of the Black Forest, at a time when fairy tales never ended happily ever after.
Customer Reviews:
Not terribly grim.......2007-10-07
I suppose the intended audience would be astonished by the fact that the Grimm Brothers' Kinder -und -Hausmarchen were somewhat gory, but I had heard it before. I was actually surprised that the tales were so tame -- and that there were so few of them. Big fonts, lots of full-page illustrations that are neither appealing nor scary, a thick, expensive faux-leather cover, and what you have is a Halloween gift book.
For a real student of folklore, try "The Annotated Brothers Grim."
Not your father's fairy tales.......2007-07-30
I like to tell bedtime stories to my granddaughters, but I'd never read one of these tales to them! This book shows quite well why the authors had the last name "Grimm", for most of these tales are grim indeed. There's murder, maiming, mutilation, incest, and just about every other evil device you can imagine. It's possible to recognize some of our own versions of these tales, but they are certainly changed from the originals! Reading this book is like passing a gruesome auto accident: you don't want to slow down and look, but you just can't help yourself. I recommend a very strong stomach for anyone wishing to read theis book.
Not What I Expected.......2006-03-09
This book was not what I expected it to be. I thought there would be more commonly known tales told in their original form than there were. I enjoyed the new stories and the couple of familiar stories it had. It simply wasn't what I was expecting.
Truely Grimm.......2006-01-31
I like the design of the hardcover book, and found that the illustrations and stories live up to the age old reputation. This Grimm is the real deal, no cutsey fairy godmothers or comical Disney editing. Just good old fashioned jealousy, heartache, horror, and the consequences of those actions.
Very Grimm Indeed.......2004-05-26
Maria Tatar introduces the stories and some of the variations in different editions. She also delves into the politics that have helped some stories become well known and helped keep others obscure. There is a table of contents, but the stories are in no discernable order.
This collection takes readers closer to the original tales and include incest, sex, and graphic violence. The stories are rough and sometimes hard to understand. For example, I could not understand why the daughter who had fled the castle and the incestuous advances of her father, the king, later purposefully let her identity be known to him.
These stories are excellent reading that should help tellers understand these folk tales better. They may be tellable as written to an adult audience. However, I feel that an audience that is not well-versed in the oral tradition my need some help in understanding them or putting them into context.
The illustrations have a lurid quality that intensifies the feeling of uneasiness.
Source Notes: Selected stories from the 3rd ed. (1822) of Kinder- und Hausmärchen by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

Book Description
The stories collected by Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm in the early 19th century reflected life as known to the German people of the time - fantastic, yet often unpredictable & pernicious. Patriotic folklorists, they began their collection of tales with the intent of preserving the endangered German oral tradition from a Napoleonic rule intent on suppressing local culture.
From their earliest release & translation, conservative parents & ecclesiastics disparaged the tales for their vestigial, raw, Gothic content & the brothers & a myriad of editors began to soften them to demure morality & sweetness to make appeal to the upper classes what began as earthy peasant fare. This is no such revision, sanitized of objectionable material; these are the grimmest.
The tales themselves are only part of the story of this volume, which is lushly illustrated with almost a hundred pieces from contemporary artists Terry Beal, Benchacco, Jon Ferril, Luc Hebert, Kelly Levy, Kathryn McLaughlin, Karen Petroff, Katy Rose & Cyrus Rua which perfectly complement the translations, lending movement and reality to the stories, transcending and transforming what most would think of as mere faerie tales.

Almost a book.......2007-05-09
This is not so much a book as a puffed up leaflet. The text is huge, and the pages are filled with what appear to be doodles done by bored ninth graders. There is no discussion or context. It is a tiny collection stories and nothing more. Shrink its margins and text to more normal size, cut the art, Cut back on white space and you ind yourself looking at maybe twenty pages. I'm being giving when I say that.
imaginative and rich.......2005-08-17
A great collection that takes the stories in unexpected directions. Loved the artwork and the weird takes.
"Fairy-stories are not necessrily for children".......2005-03-27
When I was a kid, I had that rather dog-eared, whitish book, with lots of fairy-tales and almost no illustrations. Yet I loved it, as I did the tales of The Grimm brothers.
Then I grew up, went to University and little by little, the name Grimm no longer reminded me of pretty maidens, kept in tall towers by ugly old witches or of handsome princes, coming to rescue them (or rather sneak into the maidens' room;)), but of language origins, Germanic sound shifts and linguistics.
And then I chanced to come across The Grimmest of Grimm and all of a sudden I was brought back all those years ago, to the days when I was reading about the boy playing at bowls with ghosts' skulls (only to finally learn what it is like to have the shivers, when he got himself a wife;)
The Grimmest of Grimm is a book created with lots of love; a book with a heart and a life of its own; a book which, with the simple way in which the tales are told and its plentiful illustrations, is suitable as much for kids, who hear them for the first time, as it is for adults, who have grown tired of reading books, written in a "language, which makes up in obscurity what it lacks in style".
The Grimmest of Grimm is a feast not only for the mind, but for the eyes, as well; a read which carries one over to a different time and place, a gateway to the dream-world of childhood, in which ghosts and spirits walk the earth and where everything is fresh and new; a world where good still wins over evil and virtue triumphs over vice.

What? I'm the first reviewer for this masterpiece?.......2006-03-19
If you though all the fairy tales you grew up with are what you've seen through the corrupt visions of Walt Disney, you're dead wrong!! All of these tales are very disturbing and violent. Why are these tales so violent, might you ask? Back in the Dark Ages in Europe, the peasants (majority of authors of these stories) needed to pass time and keep their minds occupied throught the long winter nights, so they wrote these horrid tales to fascinate themselves.
When I read "The Robber Bridegroom" as a Sophomore in high school, the textbook version didn't have any descriptions of how the bridegroom's victims were killed, this book does. There's many stories such as "Rapunzel," "The Juniper Tree," "The Goose Maid," "Fowler's Fowl," and "Aschenputtel (the original version of "Cinderella")." If you want to read very fascinating stories about the real bedtime stories, I suggest you pick this up in a heartbeat.
If you're a diehard Disney fan, don't read this.
