      Book Description

As a food resource in both Eastern and Western countries, the eel is an important fish. Over the years, remarkable progress has been achieved in understanding the mysterious life cycle of eels that has fascinated scientists since the age of Aristotle. The spawning area of the Japanese eel was discovered and the migratory route of its larvae was elucidated. With the development of techniques for artificial induction of gonadal maturation, it became possible to obtain hatched larvae. Larval rearing to the leptocephalus stage, one of the most difficult tasks involved in eel culture, finally was achieved. By presenting these important breakthroughs, Eel Biology will be of great help in the development of effective management strategies for maintaining stable eel populations. With contributions by leading experts, this book is a valuable source for researchers as well as industry technicians in the fields of aquatic biology, aquaculture, and fisheries.

I once knew a guy in college who kept all sorts of things in tanks in his apartment. That was my first brush with this type of thing. Phillip Purser's book really brings all of this home in this book. It taught me everything I needed to know. And since I love to tell it like it is...I say, Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Best of its Kind.......2005-08-06

I've been waiting for a book like this to make it to the shelves for as long as I can remember. Moray eels have always been described in bits ahd pieces here and there in all the other books, but they've never, as far as I know, had a book all their own. I'm still reading the book and finding it to be a whole-product; that is to say, it touches on so many parts of moray keeping that it answers just about all the questions you'd ever have. As any marine fish hobbyist will tell you, referencing and cross-referencing can be a big pain in the butt when looking to solve a problem; its so refreshing to find a one-stop resource.

The writing is good too, it's not boring or thick, like a lot of experts tend to be. I found myself laughing out loud at several points. You can tell the author is so comfortable in his knowledge of the material, that he can relay it to his readers in a light, cool way that is totally readable.

The book is put out by TFH publications, renowned for their great pet books, so it's quality all the way around. It's not as long as it could be; I think there are some more moray species that could have been covered, but the coverage of what species are included is excellent. Species are described in terms of: Minimum Tank Size, Natural Range, Size, Natural Habitat, Diet & Feeding, Description, Aquarium Suitability (the author ranks each species on a 1 to 5 scale, 1's are very hard to keep, 5's are best for beginners; a great idea if you don't exactly know which species is best for you), and any 'Special Conditions' that are associated with each species, like more swimming space versus more hiding area.

Morays have been on the pet market for years, now, and I think its only right that a quality book on them exist; its only fair to the animals and its only fair to the keepers. Its well worth owning.

      4 out of 5 stars cool book.......2005-08-03

I've kept eels for years without a true-blue book on them. This book does a good job of telling what you need to know to keep 'em alive and happy. Wish I had it years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Best Buy for Aquarium Books.......2005-08-02

I bought this book because I've long been interested in moray eels, and after having read it, I DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone who is at all interested in keeping these amazing animals. Every aspect of moray keeping is here, and it's easy to understand. The appendices ROCK! They give info on so many eel species not covered in the main body of the work. The only criticism I can give is that this book is only 140 pages; I'd have liked it if the book had been twice as long.

All in all, I definitely think it's worth anybody's time to read it, even if you're only remotely interested in the eels. And if you're a hard core hobbyist, this book is a MUST!

      Book Description

Outside of sushi houses and the rare four-star restaurant, most Americans would never think to eat eel, but throughout Europe and Asia you can find it grilled, smoked, stewed, jellied, skewered, fried, baked, sautéed, and even cooked into an omelet. In Consider the Eel, acclaimed writer Richard Schweid takes the reader on a journey to show how this rich yet mild-tasting fish is a vibrant part of the world culture. Discover how eels, from their birth in the Sargasso Sea to their eventual end as a piece of kabayaki or as part of an Italian Christmas dinner, are one of our oldest and least understood gifts from the sea.

Sure eels are slimy and weird, but that doesn't mean you can't learn to love them!

Read this book and instead of retching at the thought of a mouthfull of broiled eel, you'll find yourself smacking your lips (at least I did).

Overall, this book seems well researched. It's well written and an overall fun read. Like an eel, it's sluggish some times. But page after page it remains fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Tales of the Elusive Eel.......2002-04-10

If you are an American, it is unlikely that you have ever eaten eel. You are more likely to have eaten eel if you are a European, and if you are Japanese, you may well eat it regularly. It is hard to figure out just why Americans now have an aversion to eating eels and other countries do not, especially since eels are part of our Pilgrim heritage, they were enjoyed by our founding fathers, and they formed an important commercial catch earlier in the last century. Itýs all very mysterious, but if you read _Consider the Eel_ (University of North Carolina Press) by Richard Schweid, you will quickly realize that almost everything connected to eels is mysterious indeed. It isnýt just that humans deal with eels in peculiar ways; the fish itself is full of paradoxes and unsolved questions.

Schweidýs topic is the Atlantic eels of two species, the European and the American. These eels reproduce in the open sea, and early development of the young takes place there, but they drift to different fresh water sources to feed and grow to adult sizes, over a period of up to twenty years. (This is opposite to the life cycle of the salmon.) Then they stop eating forever and head to sea, changing their eyes to adapt to ocean dark, and changing body chemistry to put up with salt water and the change of water pressure. It was only in 1924 that a Danish researcher found eel larvae in the Sargasso sea, the huge area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Azores. All the Atlantic eels go there to mate, and then they die, but no adults have ever been seen swimming there; the only two eels found there had been eaten by other fish. We can only guess at what they are up to deep below the surface. The larvae look like little oval leaves. Depending on currents, the larvae float for thousands of miles and for years until they reach estuaries and mouths of rivers. Once they find a river with a muddy bottom and food sources, they take control of their lives. They can even cross land to get to a lake or pond over a mile away. Farming eels is quite possible, and can be lucrative, but must be done under an extraordinary disadvantage which no other farm animal presents. Eels cannot be bred in captivity. No one has been able to make them forgo their trip to the Sargasso for reproduction.

American eel fishermen and dealers, many of whom Schweid talked to in preparation of this book, have a peculiar business of trading in a product that no one they know likes. Many of them have been in business for decades, although catches are declining and sales which have to be to Europe or Japan are profitable or not based on exchange rates. Many are simply revolted by the idea of eating their product. Schweid offers to fry some for supper, and a woman who has caught eels for decades replies, ýI would never eat one. Looks too much like a snake.ý Another fisherman, when Schweid brought up the long migration of the eels said, ýI know what all the scientists say about what they do, and the trip they make. It may be right, but it ainýt reasonable.ý Whether the facts are reasonable are not, this readable account of a very strange fish and the strange people who make their living from it is full of facts that are entertaining and astounding.

Featherfin is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. Both of my children were absolutely captivated by the story of this peacock eel. Not only were they entertained by the story but, in the course of the story, learned a lesson in the merits of listening to parental advice. I highly recommend this and the rest of Mr. Cosgrove's books as well. They are a worthy addition to any child's library.

Fan maker Yoshi loves the delectable smell of the eels broiled by his fishmonger neighbor, Sabu. But he also loves the sound of the coins jingling in his money box, and so he never actually buys the eels, content just to smell them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Struggling to make a living selling his eels, Sabu is furious with Yoshi for his stubbornness, and demands payment for all the eels Yoshi has sniffed. Yoshi retaliates by performing a wild coin-rattling dance in the street: "chin chin jara jara... chin jara jara...." When he finishes, he tells Sabu, "You have charged me for the smell of your eels, and I have paid you with the sound of my money." Is there any hope of reconciliation for these feuding neighbors?

Adapted from the Japanese folktale "Smells and Jingles," this hilarious story shows that in business--and in life--you usually get what you pay for. Compromise often ends up being the most satisfying arrangement all around. Yumi Heo's oil, pencil, and collage illustrations are the real treasure. Readers of all ages will pore over the rich golds, greens, and reds, returning to the story again and again to savor this feast for their eyes. (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter

          Book Description

A witty tale of delicious smells and rhythmic sounds aptly proves -- you often get what you pay for!

Long ago in the Japanese city of Yedo, there lived a fan maker named Yoshi who loved to eat broiled eels. Every night he watched his neighbor, Sabu, go off to catch eels, broil them on his hibachi, and wait for customers. "The eel broiler should share leftovers with his neighbor," muttered Yoshi. "The fan maker should buy eels from his neighbor," grumbled Sabu. But Yoshi loves the sound of the coins jingling in his money box too much to buy Sabu's eels. Sitting alone, eating boiled rice and enjoying the smell of Sabu's cooking, he is content-until Sabu presents him with a bill for all the eels he has smelled! How Yoshi repays Sabu makes for a witty, satisfying tale about the pleasures of give and take-proving that in life, as in business, you often get what you pay for.

Tonight I was washing the dishes and my daughter suddenly started chanting "chin chin jara jara"; it made me want to grab a box of coins and start to dance! This book has a wonderful message of caring about and respecting others. It also is entertaining for children so they'll sit still and actually LISTEN to the wonderful message. Yoshi's Feast is a sumptuously illustrated, high quality picture book that I recommend without reservation.

This book is a must buy! Perfect for reading aloud. I can't wait to share this with my second graders next year! I purchased an autographed copy at my local Borders tonite and couldn't wait to get on here and "plug" this picturebook! Reminding me a bit of Demi's picturebooks (ie., The Empty Pot), this book has more! The onomatopoeia throughout the lively text really lends itself to reading aloud! The illustrations work very well with the text! Another Melanie Kroupa masterpiece! (see Steamboat, The Big Cheese)Outstanding literature! Even the author's bio on the dust jacket flap is interesting!

My 2 1/2 year old daughter is part Japanese and I love it when I can find a beautifully illustrated book about that country and its customs. This book is funny as well as a feast for the eyes. She really loves the "sounds" that the coins make and the funny folk tale.

                Book Description

This book deals with decision making in environments of significant data uncertainty, with particular emphasis on operations and production management applications. For such environments, we suggest the use of the robustness approach to decision making, which assumes inadequate knowledge of the decision maker about the random state of nature and develops a decision that hedges against the worst contingency that may arise. Robust Discrete Optimization is a comprehensive mathematical programming framework for robust decision making. This book takes a giant first step in presenting decision support tools and solution methods for generating robust decisions in a variety of interesting application environments such as: linear programming, assignment problems, shortest paths, minimum spanning trees, knapsack problems, resource allocation, scheduling, production planning, location, inventory, layout planning, network design, and international sourcing. Beyond theoretical results, the book provides many suggestions and useful advice to the practitioners of the robustness approach. Emphasis is placed upon the assessment of the decision environment for applicability of the approach, structuring of data uncertainty and the scenario generation process, choice of appropriate robustness criteria, and formulation and solution of robust decision problems. Audience: The book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners and graduate students working in the fields of operations research, management science, industrial and systems engineering, computer science, decision analysis and applied mathematics.

                  Book Description

Like Wescott's extraordinary novella The Pilgrim Hawk (which Susan Sontag described in The New Yorker as belonging "among the treasures of 20th-century American literature"), Apartment in Athens concerns an unusual triangular relationship. In this story about a Greek couple in Nazi-occupied Athens who must share their living quarters with a German officer, Wescott stages an intense and unsettling drama of accommodation and rejection, resistance and compulsion—an account of political oppression and spiritual struggle that is also a parable about the costs of closeted identity.

5 out of 5 stars ideology meets civilisation.......2006-08-22

in the claustrophobic, despair-tinged encounter of gentle greek wisdom with nazi ideology, i was gripped by the immediacy of the events. the two tone cover of the modern book recaptures its initial urgent printing post-war on cheap paper. the war is still on between ideology and civilisation: a war between ideology - the sense that one's own particular partial truth can be made to apply everywhere (at whatever cost), and civilisation - taking one's knowing place in the flow of time and peoples.

I'd love to see this novel become play. the ink is still wet.

                  2 out of 5 stars Distracting .......2006-05-16

I liked the story being a Greek family accustoms their lives around one Nazi Officer Lieutenant named Kalter who takes over their quarters by order of the Nazi regime. They have burdens placed on them, and are afraid to act even when Kalter abuses their son. 'If you dont want to know the ending' SKIP THIS: then Kalter commits suicide, and relieves the Helianos family of his existence, but at the price of her husbands life. Before Kalter died, he left a suicide note blaming Mr. Helianos for his death, and considering the fact that Helianos was in prison for questioning the Nazi ideals he is executed and Mrs. helianos is left to take care of the children.

                  NOW READ:
The reason I gave this book 2 stars is because I was detracted from the story every time I had to read about Mrs. Helianos's weak character because she is a woman, or her emotionally fragile nature, or being an obedient wife to her husband, and other undermining descriptions of the female gender. If anything the ending of the story shows how stunted she was by always having to be co-dependant on her husband, always being told she would be useless without him due to her 'womanly' nature and how that jeopardized her view of herself.

5 out of 5 stars A fine study of humiliation and nobility.......2006-02-04

This novel was published in 1945 and tells the harrowing tale of the Helianos family in Athens during the German occupation of Greece. Nikolas Helianos is a middle-aged part-owner and editor of a publishing house. He and his wife have a ten-year-old daughter Leda and a twelve-year-old son Alex. Their twenty-year-old son Cimon died in a battle at Mount Olympus in 1941. Mrs Helianos has reached the point of desperation of war when nothing else matters except the survival of her loved ones.
Nikolas Helianos, a sedentary and philosophical man, does not participate in the underground or any sort of organised resistance to the occupiers of Greece. His relatives let him know that they consider him a coward and he is therefore particularly despondent when his family have to take a German officer, Ernst Robert Kalter, to live in their apartment. Nikolas sees that this is bound to bring disgrace as things stand between him and his kinsmen and he knows that it is the weak who are timid and conciliatory. Now in the actual physical presence of Kalter he is less than ever able to correct his character although he knows how deeply his wife hates the invaders of Greece since they took her first and best child's life.
But little does Nikolas know how this forced confinement with the enemy is to turn out in fact and how the heroic Helianos' are later to speak of him, if not a true hero, at least a martyr.
The serenity, moderateness and lack of sensation of the plot are worthy of a true Greek tragedy. The protagonists are conducting a psychological war against the enemy, building interior defences behind the mask of obedience and submission like walls to protect their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Wescott's craft of realistic psychological details show the real war,.......2005-12-11

Interpersonal and inner conflicts during wartime are so abundant that a reader might think the easiest way for a novelist to find material is to pick a war. But what turns a war novel into something timeless depends on the artistry of the writer; with Apartment in Athens we get World War II in Wescott's way. The genius of this novel is that only two shots are fired--one "off scene." In other words, Wescott does not use violence to move the plot forward; the brutality of war takes place all in the dialogue, that is, in the sensitive emotions and nuanced moods which transfer between people during conversation. On the surface, a Greek couple, Mr. and Mrs. Helianos, become domestic slaves in their own small apartment which they are forced to share with Captain Ernst Kalter, a Nazi. The conversations among them offer the finest details of human interaction under pressure.

Numerous times while reading Apartment in Athens, I paused to marvel at Wescott's craft: his ability to ratchet up the tension between Kalter and the Helianoses and their young children, Alex and Leda. Wescott's novel is a "classic realist" text in that the moral choice is very clear: His readership will not side with people who have clearly chosen cruelty and domination, the Nazis. But no one in the novel is a stereotype. Kalter has a human side which leaves the reader breathless; in fact, the climax of the plot might very well be that the German officer could have saved himself if he had recognized his own humanity. Through Kalter's betrayal of Nikolas Helianos, Wescott shows us that the tragedy of war is best illustrated in the failure of individual personal relationships, a failure characterized by Kalter's blindness to the opportunity to exercise compassion for himself and others.

Regarding the techniques a writer uses to raise the tension, Wescott made the Helianoses of above average intelligence and thus excruciatingly aware of what they face; Mr. and Mrs. Helianos have distinctly individual interior monologues which reveal their thought processes in realistic psychological flow. To craft Ernst Kalter, Wescott used the limited consciousness of the unreliable narrator in order to show the reader the full extent of Kalter's lack of insight into his own moral choices. To move the plot forward, and to blend the thoughts of characters with descriptive passages, Wescott only lightly employed the omniscient narrator's explanatory power.

5 out of 5 stars The everydayness of evil.......2005-09-21

What makes this small masterpiece trouble your sleep is the brilliant way in which Glenway Westcott portrayed marriage, intimacy, and the essential decency of the Helianos couple...all qualities that would prove their downfall. Mr. and Mrs. Helianos' profound misjudgement of their brutal guest lies in their belief in a certain threshhold of humanity below which real people do not fall. But people do, and the portrayal of the Nazi officer billeted in their house is chilling, to say the least. What keeps the reader up at night is the knowledge that he would have probably acted as the Helianos' did...and been just as wrong as they were.

Ah, if this had been merely a war story, tragically told, it would be nothing--there are thousands. But Wescott's prose is a marvel. The Helianos marriage emerges as a series of compromises made first in resentment, later out of laziness, and lastly, with love. Their (and their children's) descent into semi-starvation is so subtly, so relentlessly portrayed. And Mrs. Helianos is the most complete female character to emerge from American literature during those war years--she's marvelously mediocre and whiney at the beginning of this nightmare, and a miracle when she emerges. We see her on that kitchen floor, the linoleum flooded with heat and light, as she pieces together her husband's smuggled toilet paper letter. When she rises with the little pieces in her hand, we are seeing a new creature, a truly Athenian goddess, descending from Olympus to avenge us all. Wescott was a genius.
