Book Description

"The Book of GENESIS" thoroughly and accurately describes this UNIX -based neuroscience modeling and simulation software developed over a number of years through NSF funding at Cal Tech. It consists of two parts. First, a collection of eight interactive computer tutorials describing simulation projects created using the GENESIS system, and second, a step-by-step practical guide which explains how the GENESIS software works and how to best manipulate it to achieve maximum results in creating one's own simulations. This publication has application as a reference guide, a textbook for course use, and as a resource to which readers can turn for ideas on how to devise one's own models and applications using the GENESIS software system. The 1st Edition of the "Book of GENESIS" was based on GENESIS version 2.0. Since its publication in 1994, there have been two further versions of GENESIS, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 Also, two new auxillary libraries, i.e., Kinetics and pGENESIS, which extend the functionality of GENESIS. In 1997, GENESIS 2.1 will appear at approximately the same time as the revision of this book. In thje new edition, there have been several changes made to the text of the book, itself, including the incorporation of two new chapters. In Part One, a new chapter on "Biochemical Kinetic Models" by U.S. Bhalla, and in Part Two, a new chapter on "Parallel Simulation of GENESIS Models" contributed by N.Goddard and G.Hood. In addition, most chapters have been improved slightly and updated, while Chapters 14, 18 and 19 have been even more significantly reworked for this new edition. The inclusion of a cross-platform CD-ROM to accompany the printed text greatly expands the utility of the GENESIS system. The cross-platform CD-ROM now accompanying the book "The Book of GENESIS" contains the full source code for GENESIS and its graphical

5 out of 5 stars the genesis of good books.........2001-09-26

This book is a detail guide for people learning to use the GEneral NEural SImulation System, one of the best softwares for computational neuroscience. The presentation is clear enough for everyone, but it would be much helpful if the readers have a basic backgound on neuroscience and programming language C. Useful exercises are provided at the back of most chapters so readers can make practices immediately.

I think this book should be recommended to undergraduates studying neuroscience. There are many books in the field of neural biophysics and modeling. Students usually find it boring and not easy to comprehend. But this book accompanies a simulation software in the CD-ROM, using which students can easily control and visualize the electrical behaviour of a neuron. This provides a chance for interactive education and should become a great help to their studies.

    Book Description

The use of sarin in the terrorist acts in Matsumoto city and Tokyo underground was considered by a number of specialists as a new era in terrorism. In addition to chemical weapons, terrorists can use a great variety of toxic chemicals from chemical industry, agriculture or products released from terrorist acts on industrial facilities. Evidently, the arsenal of chemical agents that can be used as terrorist agents is practically unlimited.

The risk of exposure to chemical agents which could be used in terrorist acts is real. Therefore, the readiness for defense in a case of chemical terrorism should be enhanced. Decontamination and medical treatment are important aspects of protection from effects after intoxications with chemical agents. This book includes reports which were presented at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) entitled "Medical Treatment of Intoxications and Decontamination of Chemical Agent in the Area of Terrorist Attack". This workshop was held on 25-28 January 2005 in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. The contributors were experts acquainted with the main problems connected with chemical terrorism. The primary focus of this workshop was determination (assessment?) of scientific concepts and practical means for management of chemical agent casualties in case of a terrorist attack, with emphasis on improvement of medical treatment and decontamination. The main aspects of the book are:

    - New approaches in pre-treatment and prophylaxis of nerve agent intoxication

    - Diagnosis of exposure to chemical agents

    - Therapy of chemical agent intoxication

    - Development of personal decontamination

    Book Description

This book provides the reader with all the tools necessary to implement modern error-processing schemes. It assumes only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and develops the mathematical theory in parallel with the codes. Central to the text are worked examples which motivate and explain the theory. The book is in four parts. The first introduces the basic ideas of coding theory. The second and third parts cover the theory of finite fields and give a detailed treatment of BCH and Reed-Solomon codes. These parts are linked by their use of Euclid's algorithm as a central technique. The fourth part is devoted to Goppa codes, both classical and geometric, concluding with the Skorobogatov-Vladut error processor. A special feature of this part is a simplified (but rigorous) treatment of the geometry of curves.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, excellent for self study.......2006-03-19

I have used this book for self study of the subject of error correction coding and I find it excellent. It is clear and well organized, with easy language and good examples all along. It does not require a professional mathematician to understand even the most subtle passages.
I read it in conjuction with Todd Moon's other book on Error Correction Coding (also an excellent choice) and although Pretzel's book is much shorter and without examples of hardware, I much appreciated its style and structure.
It would be nice if the author would publish an up-to-date errata of the several printing mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and intuitive.......2003-06-18

Overall an excellent book on coding theory. Pretzel discusses fundamental codes for error correction such as hamming codes, BCH codes and Reed-Solomon codes. His presentation of finite fields is excellent. He does not simply slap equations down but leads you by way of examples and intuition and then applies them towards the construction of BCH and Reed-Solomon codes. This is an excellent book on coding theory.

    Book Description

In this tract, Professor Moreno develops the theory of algebraic curves over finite fields, their zeta and L-functions, and, for the first time, the theory of algebraic geometric Goppa codes on algebraic curves. Among the applications considered are: the problem of counting the number of solutions of equations over finite fields; Bombieri's proof of the Reimann hypothesis for function fields, with consequences for the estimation of exponential sums in one variable; Goppa's theory of error-correcting codes constructed from linear systems on algebraic curves; there is also a new proof of the TsfasmanSHVladutSHZink theorem. The prerequisites needed to follow this book are few, and it can be used for graduate courses for mathematics students. Electrical engineers who need to understand the modern developments in the theory of error-correcting codes will also benefit from studying this work.

1 out of 5 stars Very not self contained.......2007-09-06

    Hi,

I tried to read this book as I wanted to understand Bombieri's
proof of Weil's Theorem (Reimann hypothesis for function fields over
    finite field)
For me this this book was very hard to read- I spent alot of time trying to
understand the first chapter-and did not get far.
The book is far from self contained and contains some errors
I think that this is far from inevitable- as there
are books who explain Bombieri's proof- the new vesion of
Schmidt's book equations over finite fields, and I think Stichentoff's
book algberaic function fields and codes- that are much more
    accesible

Maybe this book has advantages that I currently cannot
appreciate- but If you're in a situation like mine-someone
that has undergraduate and partial graduate knowledge of
math , and you want to understand Bombieri's proof
and some concepts from function fields and algebraic geometry
    - I recommend you look elsewhere

4 out of 5 stars Informative, oddly organized.......2001-10-28

This is really two booklets put together, one for mathematicians and one for computer scientists or electrical engineers, with the more accessible one put second. Throughout, the method is very algebraic, as opposed to geometrical. The author explains that he wants to require as little geometry as possible. And this book assumes you have your own motivation for the material. So it gives few examples or explanations until after the theorems are proved. Probably the best source for introductory examples and geometric motivation for Zeta functions on finite fields is chapters 7, 10, and 11 of Ireland and Rosen's CLASSICAL INTRODUCTION TO MODERN NUMBER THEORY.

Moreno's chapters 1-4 aim at math grad students. Chapters 1-3 prove the Riemann-Roch theorem for curves on finite fields, and then use it to give Bombieri's proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for those curves. The treatment is on the level of Hartshorne's ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY and often refers to that book for an alternative account. But Moreno's book is just on dimension one, and only over finite fields. So he proves the Riemann Hypothesis for this case by page 69, while Hartshorne gives the proof as an exercise on page 368. Ireland and Rosen prove only some special cases, notably the case of elliptic curves on their page 302.

Chapter 4 continues the first three, with a very long and attractive discussion of L functions and exponential sums on these curves, with applications in number theory. I have not learned this material yet but I'll tell you this is the most encouraging treatment of it I have seen.

Chapter 5, which is over one third of the book, does not assume the earlier chapters. It aims at computer scientists interested in the theoretical limits on efficiency of Goppa codes and practical ways to approach those limits. Here are much more elementary explanations of the methods used in earlier chapters. It explains the "birational" viewpoint where a curve is studied by way of the field of rational functions on it, and in fact that field takes on a life of its own. The original curve is forgotten and "points" are defined to be "discrete valuation rings" of any function field. Moreno explains how, in clear cases, these correspond to the points of geometrical curves. But, as a key example, "points" at infinity are automatically included on this approach, even if you do not include them in the geometric curves. He explains what the Riemann-Roch theorem actually says about curves. This chapter does not give complete proofs, and indeed it cites other books for the proof of at least one theorem that was already proved in chapter 1.

You can learn a lot from this book but you'll have to dig for it.

              Book Description

Jill the Reckless is an English comedy of manners in much the same style as his better-known Jeeves and Wooster tales.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (pronounced "Wood-house") [1881-1975] was an English comic writer who enjoyed enormous popular success for more than seventy years. An acknowledged master of English prose, contemporaries such as Hilaire Belloc, Evelyn Waugh and Rudyard Kipling (and modern writers including Douglas Adams, Salman Rushdie, Terry Pratchett, and Stephen Fry) show the influence of his work. Sean O'Casey famously called him "English literature's performing flea", a derogatory description that Wodehouse cherished and adopted as the title of his autobiography. The Times has hailed him as a 'comic genius recognized in his lifetime as a classic and an old master of farce'.

4 out of 5 stars Wodehouse and New York.......2007-05-09

For Wodehouse fans, one of the less well-known novels, which they would enjoy reading anyway... a lot of the usual Wodehouse humour based on how people think and react to situations. There are other Wodehouse novels where the charm of New York comes across. This one is as good as any of them in that respect. It also captures the inner workings of the stage and the making of musicals, of course in a 'Wodehousean' way.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Could Use Some Editing.......2007-03-04

"Jill the Reckless" by P. G. Wodehouse was first published in the U.S. by George H. Doran under the title "The Little Warrior" on October 11, 1920. It was published in the U.K. by Herbert Jenkins under this title on July 4, 1921. This is one of the longer books by Wodehouse, running over 400 pages, and it is not part of any series. The cast of characters is fairly large, with some being introduced for the first time almost halfway through the book.

The story is typical Wodehouse, which is to say that it is simple and yet complicated with many twists and turns, all leading back to a place where the reader pretty much expects it to get after the initial setup section of the book. In this case, the key character is Jill Mariner, and she is joined by Freddie Rooke and Wally Mason, who (as we learn) were Jill's childhood friends. Wally had a big crush on Jill in their earlier lives, but when the story starts Jill is engaged to Sir Derek Underhill, and is about to be introduced to his mother Lady Underhill. Jill is still in touch with Freddie, and Wally re-enters their lives when they go to see his new play. Other key characters are Major Christopher Selby, who is Jill's uncle and was in charge of her inheritance; and Nelly Bryant, who is an American chorus girl who is stranded in London.

The story follows Jill through a broken engagement over a misunderstanding, the loss of her wealth, her living with relatives who have their own plans, her decision to get work as a chorus girl, and, as with all Wodehouse, the finding of the love of her life. The story starts in England, but moves to America which brings in her additional relatives, as well as Isaac Goble, Otis Pinkington, and his wealthy aunt Mrs. Peagrim. Isaac is a theatrical manager and has been contracted by Otis to put on a play which he wrote called "The Rose of America". At times the story seems to lose its way, and one wonders if it wouldn't have worked better if it had been edited down a bit from its 414 pages.

While this book is far from his best, I would say it is a decent example of Wodehouse's work, and far from his worst. With a little more trimming, this might have been even better, but even without that you will find plenty of enjoyment. It is a solid three stars, and in fact slightly above average over all.
