          Book Description

Outstanding text treats numerical analysis with mathematical rigor, but relatively few theorems and proofs. Oriented toward computer solutions of problems, it stresses errors in methods and computational efficiency. Problems — some strictly mathematical, others requiring a computer — appear at the end of each chapter.

If you are looking in to 3d Nurbs buy this book. If you are looking to build a robot from scratch buy this book. It may mean taking calculus and linear algebra but the algorithms are very advanced and quick. This is the math that every corporation would like you to have if you are an engineer. Plus it helps you understand many of the mathematicians. After reading this book you have excellent under pinning for your name.

P.S. This may be good for white hatter as well but I don't know since I am not into cryptography.

P.P.S. Did you always think that Sin() was a magical function? Well you will learn more than you every thought possible with this book. The optimization on you code can go through the roof. Plus this seems to be (but I still have not confirmed) a good way of understanding O notation and not to mention NP complete algorithms (Such what classifies a NP Complete problem).

2 out of 5 stars Archaic First Course in Numerical Analysis.......2005-02-11

A constant in numerical analysis for years the second edition has not kept pace with the way mathematics is contemporarily taught to engineers and scientists. The book appears to assume an older format of learning mathematics was used by the reader. The reader will soon be seeking additional texts to make this one understandable.

I lost my original copy during my last move. Therefore, I was overjoyed that an inexpensive paperback version had been printed. A must for the numerical analyst's library.

5 out of 5 stars good intermediate text on numerical analysis.......2001-06-07

This is a good intermediate text on numerical analysis. The development of the underlying real variable theory is much more rigorous than the closely related and more recent text "Numerical Recipes in C". Also, there is more attention paid to function theoretic considerations such as notions of continuity and compactness. This is basically an introductory numerical functional analysis textbook. There are numerous good examples sprinkled throughout the text. To get the most out of this book, you need a working knowledge of advanced calculus, real analysis and linear algebra.

This is the republication of the 2nd edition published by McGraw-Hill, 1978, with minor corrections. This Dover edition also includes 50 pages of Hints and Answers to Problems, which is very helpful. It is one of the 14 reference books listed in the Numerical Recipe in C: The Art of Scientific Computing, and the authors of the Recipe book says, of the 14 books, "These are the books that we like to have within easy reach." A. Ralston, of SUNY Buffalo, also co-wrote a book, Discrete Algorithmic Mathematics(DAM), which is easy and fun to read. But I am puzzled by the words - "Well-known and highly regarded even by those who have never used it." - on the back cover of the A K Peters edition of DAM. What do they mean?

The Everyday cookbook series have helped to make my dinners delicious but none more than Thursday is Pot-Luck. This book is jam packed with tons of creative one pot meal ideas in numerous ethnic backgrounds. The recipies are really wasy to follow and the ingredients needed are so common they can be made with little preparation (those frantic rushes to the supermarket when you don't have a specific ingredient) but the final product is anything but common!

                    5 out of 5 stars Not a Melodrama.......2004-08-07

This novel is not melodramatic, because it does not fit the definition. In a melodrama there is a polarization of good and evil; both are shown with an exaggerated acuteness and feelings that go along are overdramatized. In "Pot-Bouille/Pot Lock" the characters are very real and down-to-earth. The novel features sex, adulteries, self-seeking, self-advancement, hypocrisy, religion, greed, fight over inheritance, jealousy, show-boating, children born out of wedlock, etc. All of that happens among the inhabitants of the same building. The last utterance in the novel (delivered by one of the servants) shows the typical nature of the late XIXth century Parisian building, which is splendidly beautiful on the outside (referring to the beginning of chapter I). A fine-looking housekeeper, who stands on guard of morals, is an embodiment of sanctimony.

The novel is somewhat loosely tied with the sequel story about Octave Mouret "Au Bonheur des Dames/the Ladies' Delight". Both are masterpieces in their own rights and can be enjoyed independently of one another.

5 out of 5 stars *Smile, Laugh and Cry With Your Neighbors*.......2003-03-13

"Pot Bouille" is indeed a piece of treasure. Even now, I can still find myself holding on to each word since the very first page. Each page will keep you wanting for more. It tells a story of an apartment building and its occupants. One might imagine the type of brownstone mansions in New York City or Beacon Hill in Boston divided to apartment units to be rented out. Except that in Zola's pot, neighborly interactions take place regularly and make up the heart of the story.

Although many stories about bourgeoisie lives have been written, I've never come across characters as vivid, comical, harsh, evolving and disgusting as those portrayed in this book. Gossips, money, sex, adulteries, self advancement and selfishness are so well mashed in the pot, they'll warm up to readers' hearts. I can really feel for the characters cause they seem very much alive, it almost seem that I'm living next door to them. Although Monsieur Octave Mouret is described as the hero in this book, I feel that the true hero is Monsieur Josserand. "Pot Bouille" is a story about temptations and human feelings. It has every power to make me cringe, laugh, smile and cry.

"Pot Bouille" is a truly wonderful piece that will spark readers' imaginations. I've enjoyed reading the copy by Oxford World's Classics. Professor Brian Nelson has done a terrific job in translating it from its original French. Read it and have fun!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, very interesting.......2002-03-29

An entertaining read but you can't help learn something about Parisian bourgeois class homelife in the process. Plenty of intrigues and double dealings. I like how zola lets us eavesdrop on the gossip sessions of the servants in the back courtyard in order to move the plot along. The ending leaves the reader hanging somewhat. He was obiously already planning to write the next installment in the Rougon Macquart series (and this book's sequel) The ladies paradise.

4 out of 5 stars What they don't teach you in business school.......1999-09-03

A good jolly soap opera of a book. Young man comes from the provinces to the capital. Gets a room in an apartment block. Learns about life in general and the opposite sex in particular. Nothing new so far. Other authors had already trod the same path. Here, the whole process is meticulously described with Zola's usual skill (he is now on the tenth novel in his cycle). One cannot help thinking, though, that the apartment block must have been a pox doctor's paradise. But the book's real interest is in how the hero uses his acquired knowledge - which is revealed when he becomes the great retailing tycoon in the next book "Au Bonheur des Dames". So, this book is really the first part of a two-part series and it does its job of whetting the appetite for part two. It shows that the university of life is better than a business studies course any day.

Nothing complicated here but lots of good flavors and easy to make. Most of these are adaptable to prepare ahead and freeze using the once a month cook method. Lots of flavors from different ethnic cooking made a bit milder for the American family. Kids will love many of the recipes in this book. My kids love the Greek Pastitsio, the Chicken Tortilla Casserole and the Argentine Stuffed Steak Spirals. I usually only find a couple of recipes in a book to use regularly with my family I use 7 or 8 out of this book.

                    Book Description

Husband and wife archaeologists Florence C. and Robert H. Lister and their two children traveled the archaeological world from 1940 to 1990. They produced numerous respected studies in the field of Southwestern archaeology and ceramics. Pot Luck, however, takes the Lister bibliography in a new a direction. Written in the years following Robert Lister's death in 1990, Pot Luck describes professional archaeology in personal terms, offering lively portraits of premier archaeologists and archaeological expeditions alongside vignettes of the Lister children at play and the Lister marriage at work.

Pot Luck follows the Listers on expeditions in Mexico, the Middle East, Spain, and the Southwest. Lister offers a happy mix of expert knowledge, professional experience, personal reflection, and wonderful writing.

A lighthearted account of fifty years of archaeological fieldwork, and a serious look at the worldwide role of ceramics in cultural understanding.

4 out of 5 stars Pots - bones of civilization - and the lucky finders.......2002-08-26

Potsherds, it seems, are as important to archeologists as bones to anthropologists. They both last. They both tell part of the human story. Somewhat in the tradition of Osa Johnson's famous chronicle, *I Married Adventure* of the previous generation, Florence Lister takes the reader along with her family through five continents and many years in search of ceramics, ancient and colonial.

Florence and her husband Bob, both archeologists, with their two young sons in tow, pursued pothunting in such diverse places as Glen Canyon in the American Southwest before it was inundated by Lake Powell and the Aswan High Dam area in Africa before it also went underwater. From the 1940s to the 1990s, they did a great deal of contract archeology, i.e. investigating areas such as dams, highways, pipelines and the like that contain historical debris such as potsherds, bones, tools and tiles before they are swept away by modern civilization. The Listers contributed considerably to the body of knowledge about connections between pueblo Indians of the American Southwest and those of Mexico and Mesoamerica as well as trade routes that brought colonial pottery from Spain and Italy to the Americas. The hard science is made more lively and interesting by the personal details.

For example, the JFK assassination occurred when the family was in Wadi Halfa in Africa. Their Nubian servants insisted on sending a cable of condolences to Mrs. Kennedy, who had played an active role in the "Save the Monuments of Nubia" campaign. Near Escalante in Utah, they uncovered more evidence about the disappearance of Everett Ruess. They discovered dishes Cortez used and roofing erected by Columbus' party. They found Genoese pots in Spanish ports, investigated porcelain in Japan (at the "climbing kilns"), T'ang pottery in China, amphorae in Greece and, like detectives, discovered old paintings depicting pottery that had found its way from Seville in Spain to the Americas.

This book sort of grows on you. At the beginning, the language is a bit stilted and self-conscious, but after the author gets into the groove and finds her zone, you begin to participate in the exciting life the family led (not without some danger; they got mugged in Jamaica and got into another tight spot in Morocco).

If you're at all interested in archeology (incidentally, the American spelling is "archeology" and the British is "archaeology") you'll relish this account and remember both scientific conclusions and personal anecdotes. If you're not at all interested in the subject, you won't even be reading this review anyway. But for the former group of people, it's a good, informative, and exciting read.

                              Book Description

In "The Bank at Gila City," when the town promotes a stock subscription to found a bank, two men are excluded as undesirables - but that was before the new bank was robbed, and they need one of them to recover the stolen funds. In "Jerico Takes the Rough String," Jerico Jones has his horse string stolen and local law enforcement follows the trail left by Jerico's horses, whereas Jerico heads in the opposite direction: the way from which the thieves came. In "$teers" a young boy is shot in front of witnesses, including Jerico Jones. John Sturgis, owner of the Bar S, claims he owns the Macklin Ranch, and the deputy sheriff in Niroba is the former Bar S wagon boss. Jerico is not at all sure how much help Deputy Sheriff Lance Touhy is going to be, either in finding the murderer or preventing Sturgis from taking over the Macklin Ranch. In "Nine Coffins for Bellaire," Jerico Jones is injured in a train wreck in which he loses the string of horses he was shipping. The railroad is more than willing to reimburse Jerico for his loss, but the amount of the requisition is for twice the sum of his claim.

Bennett Foster knew the terrain and the people of the West first-hand from a lifetime of living there.
