The Greeks were the first to use rational systems of medicine, based upon belief in natural causation, rather than magical and religious elements, which resulted in a new conception of disease, accounting for causes and symptoms of illness. Greek Medicine places ancient Greek medicine, from Homer to the Alexandrians, within its historical and intellectual context by presenting a selection of source material in translation.
The book provides a chronological account on the most important aspects of ancient medicine, and includes chapters on specific areas of medicine, such as gynecology, dietetics, pharmacology and surgery.

This collection of sources, together with careful analyses of the evidence presented, well reveals the world's first systems for medicine as a rational science for healing and health. There is a wide-ranging collection of sources displaying something of the breadth of knowledge of Greek physicians, especially during the classical and Hellenistic periods, as physicians discovered that divine causation was an ineffective method for understanding illness. The study is based chronologically, with chapters devoted to specific topics such as gynecology, surgery, medical ethics, professional behavior, and dietetics. I recommend it highly.

The lead essay by Bernard Schnell, "Prolegomena to a History of Medieval German Medical Literature: The Twelfth Century," clarifies methodological principles for this literary sociology and examines the current state of research in the study of manuscript transmission. The remaining essays discuss either manuscripts by a single author or paradigmatic manuscripts within a single national tradition. Until all the basic sources in medieval texts are uncovered and a survey is made, this volume will stand as an overview of the field.

I have been reading this book by Andrew Murray, in several different editions, since 1981. I read it over and over each year. Each reading brings a new discovery in Murray's wonderful epistle on prayer.

Second to the bible, this is my favorite book of all time. I believe it will open your eyes to what prayer and intimacy with God can and should actually be like (as well as how far we've fallen/ how distorted our view of prayer tends to be!). Other than the Word, there are few books (at least of those that are not so sophisticated as to be beyond comprehension) that I can read over and over and never fail to discover something new each time. But this one I have been reading for years, and it NEVER grows old.
Enlightening and Empowering, NOT just a book on prayer........2006-11-10
I purchased the paperback ed. 1981, 238 pages. This is an exceptional book. Each of the 31 chapters breaks down what prayer is and why we are to pray and then a well thought out prayer is offered, which I might add spoke to what I was thinking in each chapter. It is not a book to read about prayer, but, to be studied. I took a chapter a day, read it and pondered it throughout the day. The author breaks down prayer, its parts and explains through scripture why these parts are important. Chapters 20 and 21 brought everything together for me emphasising why our prayers have not been answered in the past and how to make changes for effective prayers. This is a must for anyone wishing to strengthen their prayer life and consequently their faith.
