Customer Reviews:
Too rambling, too biblical.......2004-09-26
I think the author might manage to cover some of the important basics of evolutionary psychology and biology, but I found it very hard to pick out any useful information buried in his loose and rambling writing style. I commend the author for trying to cover a highly technical area in a manner that tries to be accessible to a lay audience, but it doesn't work for me. I also found the frequent biblical references and quotes to be excessive and unnecessary.
A much better coverage of the "gene-centered way of life" can be found in Vertosick's "The Genius Within." While this requires slow and careful reading, it should be accessible (and quite fascinating)to the non-scientists among us.
Book Description
This book is divided in two parts. Part I provides a brief but accurate summary of all the basic ideas, theories, methods, and conspicuous results of structure analysis and molecular modelling of the condensed phases of organic compounds: quantum chemistry, the intermolecular potential, force
field and molecular dynamics methods, structural correlation, and thermodynamics. This Part is written in simple and intuitive form, so that the reader may easily find there the essential background for the discussions in the second part. Part II exposes the present status of studies in the
analysis, categorization, prediction and control, at a molecular level, of intermolecular interactions in liquids, solutions, mesophases, and crystals. The main focus is here on the links between energies, structures, and chemical or physical properties.

Book Description
This book is based on a NATO Advanced Study Institute held to enhance our understanding, at both an experimental and a theoretical level, of the molecular dynamics in liquid crystals. The lecturers at the Institute, each leaders in their respective fields, have contributed chapters to the book with the aim of producing, for the first time, a coherent, pedagogical account of this interdisciplinary subject. The range of materials considered is wide, including lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals, biological membranes and polymeric systems. The formalism needed to characterise the rotational, translational and conformational dynamics is developed. Then the use of experimental techniques to investigate the dynamics is described; these techniques include NMR and ESR spectroscopy, neutron scattering, dielectric relaxation, infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence depolarisation. Some of these experiments are influenced by the collective orientations or director modes which are also considered. The results of these experiments are presented and the theory necessary to understand them is described, with particular attention being paid to the influence of the long range liquid--crystalline order on the dynamics.

Book Description
The present work is one of the very few to which the new postgraduate can turn for an introduction to theoretical methods in the exciting new area of soft condensed matter, containing descriptions of dynamics and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Over the last 15 years connections have been made between polymers, colloids, liquid crystals and self- assemblies, and these have greatly assisted our understanding of a growing amount of experimental data on their dynamic properties: light scattering, rheology, flow-induced phase transitions, X-ray and neutron scattering. Nowhere else have the leading exponents in their fields been brought together to provide a consistent account of the new experimental methods and the outstanding challenges that face the researcher into complex fluids today. Audience: Suitable as a graduate text as well as for the seasoned researcher. Many contributions conclude with research material stimulated by the discussions at the ASI that gave rise to the book.

From the author: The compatibilization by transesterification of aromatic thermotropic liquid crystal polyesters (Ar-TLCP's) and TLCP's containing aliphatic ethylene-terephthalate (ET) linkages has been studied. Three Ar-TLCP's were mixed with two p(ET/HBA)'s, each having different extents of blockiness, to form a series of binary blends (Bin-TLCP's). The morphology and physical properties of the resultant Bin-TLCP's depend on the block structures, compositions, viscosities, and susceptibility to transesterification of the components. In this work, the influence of TLCP block structure and transesterification on the compatibility of the components of the Bin-TLCP's is described.

Book Description
The monograph is based on the results of the authors obtained during the last decade and only partially published in scientific periodicals. Part I presents some common methods of engineering penetration modeling. Particular attention is given to two closely related approaches: the localized interaction and cavity expansion approximations that are widely used in the monograph. In this part for the first time appears a comprehensive description of the localized interaction approach and the tools for its application to penetration mechanics. Part II is devoted, mainly, to shape optimization of impactors applied to different media (metal, concrete, FRP laminate) and using different impactor-shield interaction models. Part III deals with analysis and optimization of multi-layered shields against ballistic impact. In this part of the monograph the influence of the order of the plates in the shield and of the spacing between the plates on the ballistic parameters are studied. This part includes the analysis of the optimum structure of metal/ceramic shields.
Although the emphasis in the book is on the analytical methods, rigorous mathematical proofs and numerical simulations complement each other in the book, and the results are presented in an illustrative manner. The monograph is self-contained and assumes only basic knowledge of solid mechanics and mathematics. The brief exposition of the necessary additional information is presented in the book.

THE NOVEL "POR EXCELENCIA" FROM CAMUS.......2002-11-28
Having submitted this review in spanish and not having it posted, I'll try again in english.......
Camus reached fame with his elaborations about the concept of the absurd (the purposeless search of the meaning of existence in a universe void of any)in three works: The Stranger, a novel; Caligula, a teathrical opus; and The Myth of Sisyphus, a recopilation of philosophical essays.
In his second famous novel, The Plague, we find a different Camus. Perhaps, more concerned about moral values and solidarity between human beings, in the face of massive destruction.
The plot of the novel unfolds in the city of Oran, Algeria. The central image has to do with a rat invasion that causes a plague epidemy, with disastrous consecuences. Here we find metaphorically portraited the invasion by the Nazis in 1943 of non occupied France (Camus said that the Nazis came like rats).
Then we find a description of the evolution of the plague, the reaction of the authorities (at first, self denial), the progressive isolation of the town from outside world, and on the onset the "normalization" of the tragedy (people grow accostumed to live with it, and become zombies). After the evolution and the growth of the problem, the inhabitants become completely isolated from the outside, and become prisoners in the inside, due to the drastic measures taken by the authorities. The plague becomes a collective problem that requires recognition and reaction by all. We have here a clear metaphorical reference to the need of a collective reaction to the Vichy government by all the citizens. The call to participate and react becomes a moral issue. Camus then describes with certain detail the soccer stadium where people are forcibly concentrated by the authorities, and this is an allusion to the Nazi concentration camps. More than the persons, the protagonist of this novel is the city.
In the sense that the values of solidarity and participation against a common disaster or enemy are called for, this novel is much more developed, from an ethical standpoint, than The Stranger.
magnifica.......2000-05-15
Perhaps one of the most important books ever written........1998-04-13
Camus's second novel "La Pest" is probably his richest and most widely accessable. The importance of the novel, however, is that it strives to create "existential ethics." Camus powerfully builds upon the ideas of absurdity that he estiblished in "The Myth of Sysiphus" and also expands upon how and why people must face and oppose suffering in the world.
Light hearted, entertaining. Page after page of easy fun........1997-10-22
Just kidding! Actually this book was heavy, depressing, and tedious to slog through. All that means is I didn't like it. I could still tell that La Peste is Camus' best attempt at converting the world to existentialism-- it just wasn't my cup of tea. Skillfully written, well thought-out and planned. Rough going throughout, but it will change you if you let it.

A timeless book that clearly defines the face of grace.......1999-08-06
My wife Kim and I read this book in the early 80's. Samuel possessed a wonderful ability to explain the mystery of God's grace in ways unfamiliar to me. It invoked my attention, desire and hunger to turn the pages again and again. In the end, the book so touched my life that I wrote Samuel and Dorothy in Canada. They responded, ended up staying at our home, and blessed this young christian couple immeasurably.
You would love this book if you can find it.
