    Book Description

Erich Grotewold has assembled a team of leading plant scientists to describe in detail the most commonly used methods for investigating plant gene function in a wide variety of plants, during plant pathogen interactions, and even in algae. These readily reproducible protocols include computational, molecular, and genetic methodologies designed for both general and specific problems. Here the reader will learn about powerful computational and statistical tools to help predict gene function either on the basis of comparative genomics, or from the analysis of complex genome sequences. Numerous loss-of-function and gain-of-function techniques for discovering gene function are presented in step-by-step detail.

                      Book Description

This symposium series book describes women in mid- to upper- level positions within the chemical industry who have been deemed successful, but are relatively unknown on a national level. Success comes in many forms, and it also comes in many positions. The book will highlight women whose careers range from very technical and obvious to those that are not. Some of the key careers include technical directors, eminent scientists, business managers, patent attorneys, bench chemists, entrepreneurs, human resource directors, and journalists. The goal of this book is to create a resource where women can find a role model, someone with whom they can relate. Profiling women with a wide diversity of experiences and career opportunities allows the reader to find a common connection. Finally the workplace is not perfect; this series book will highlight both the pleasant and unpleasant career experiences which these women underwent.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Inspirational.......2005-12-14

This book provides career histories and details for 25 successful women chemists. What I found most interesting is that each has defined "success" in her own way, and then went about achieving it. Their stories broadened my perspective on what is possible, and even desirable. The introductory and conclusion chapters provide some statistics, as well as common themes that run through all the stories. I recommend it for anyone considering a career in a science-related field - it will give you an idea of just how much is out there, and get you started thinking about the many possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible Role Models for Women Chemists .......2005-09-19

Mid-career chemsits and young women interested in a career in science will find this book inspirational and revealing. The personal stories of the featured chemists describe their career paths, personal lives, and triumphs/defeats. The introduction covers some of the statistics and issues that women scientists face. I found it easy to read and the range of career paths to be wide-ranging. I like that the book included women with degrees ranging from BS to PhD with experiences in large and small companies and national laboratories. Many other books describe the careers of women chemists who made it to the top - while this book broadens the definition of success and describes careers that most women can reach for. I think that this book should be available in all chemistry libraries used as a resource for those who aren't sure if they can achieve success in chemistry. This book will give them confidence to pursue their dreams.

                      Book Description

The linearized theory of elasticity has long played an important role in engineering analysis. From the cast-iron and steel truss bridges of the eighteenth century to the international Space station, engineers have used the linearized theory of elasticity to help guide them in making design decisions effecting the strength, stiffness, weight, and cost of structures and components.

The Linearized Theory of Elasticity is a modern treatment of the linearized theory of elasticity, presented as a specialization of the general theory of continuum mechanics. It includes a comprehensive introduction to tensor analysis, a rigorous development of the governing field equations with an emphasis on recognizing the assumptions and approximations inherent in the linearized theory, specification of boundary conditions, and a survey of solution methods for important classes of problems. It covers two- and three-dimensional problems, torsion of noncircular cylinders, variational methods, and complex variable methods.

The mathematical framework behind the theory is developed in detail, with the assumptions behind the eventual linearization made clear, so that the reader will be adequately prepared for further studies in continuum mechanics, nonlinear elasticity, inelasticity, fracture mechanics, and/or finite elements. Prior to linearization, configurations and general (finite deformation) measures of strain and stress are discussed. A modern treatment of the theory of tensors and tensor calculus is used. General curvilinear coordinates are described in an appendix.

An extensive treatment of important solutions and solution methods, including the use of potentials, variational methods, and complex variable methods, follows the development of the linearized theory. Special topics include antiplane strain, plane strain/stress, torsion of noncircular cylinders, and energy minimization principles. Solutions for dislocations, inclusions, and crack-tip stress fields are discussed. Development of the skills and physical insight necessary for solving problems is emphasized. In presenting solutions to problems, attention is focused on the line of reasoning behind the solution.

                      Topics and Features:

                      * Can be used without prerequisite course in continuum mechanics

                      * Includes over one hundred problems

                      * Maintains a clear connection between linearized elasticity and the general theory of continuum mechanics

                      * Introduces theory in the broader context of continuum mechanics prior to linearization, providing a strong foundation for further studies

                      * Promotes the development of the skills and physical intuition necessary for deriving analytic solutions

                      * Provides readers with tools necessary to solve original problems through extensive coverage of solution methods

The book is ideal for a broad audience including graduate students, professionals, and researchers in the field of solid mechanics. This new text/reference is an excellent resource designed to introduce students in mechanical or civil engineering to the linearized theory of elasticity.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT textbook for people new to the subject!.......2004-12-13

I am a civil engineering graduate student who took theory of elasticity this semester. I had attempted to learn the subject from a variety of other references, but became frustrated by the incomplete treatment given in most other texts. Slaughter's book develops all topics (including tensor calculus) as needed and explains the solutions to a wide variety of the most common problems in a clear and easy to follow manner. Topics include airy stress functions, Saint Venant warping functions, kinematics, constitutive laws, and the governing equations in two and three dimensions. This book is an absolute MUST for anyone attempting to learn the linearized theory of elasticity!!!

                        Product Description

Considering that much of his life was spent in poverty and ill health, it is something of a miracle that in only forty-six years George Orwell managed to publish ten books and two collections of essays. Here, in four fat volumes, is the best selection of his non-fiction available, a trove of letters, essays, reviews, and journalism that is breathtaking in its scope and eclectic passions. Orwell had something to say about just about everyone and everything. His letters to such luminaries as Julian Symons, Anthony Powell, Arthur Koestler, and Cyril Connolly are poignant and personal. His essays, covering everything from "English Cooking" to "Literature and Totalitarianism," are memorable, and his books reviews (Hitler's Mein Kampf, Mumford's Herman Melville, Miller's Black Spring, Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield to name just a few) are among the most lucid and intelligent ever written. From 1943 to l945, he wrote a regular column for the Tribune, a left wing weekly, entitled "As I Please." His observations about life in Britain during the war embraced everything from anti-American sentiment to the history of domestic appliances.

                        3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-09-07

For years, I have been impressed by the quality of the essays in Dickens, Dali, and Others, Shooting an Elephant, and Such, Such Were the Joys. I was looking forward to reading more of Orwell's essays. I soon discovered, however, that Orwell's essays not published in book form shared all the faults of those that I had read, but few of the virtues.

Many cite Orwell's honesty as his primary virtue, but these essays reveal a man who is, if not dishonest, then at least quite blind to his own experiences. He states, without any supporting evidence, that "only Socialist nations can fight effectively" (p. 67, from The Lion and the Unicorn), despite the fact that he served in an army organized along socialist lines (as narrated on p. 255), if not the army of a socialist nation, five years prior to the publication of this statement; the army was defeated decisively by Generalissimo Franco's decidedly non-socialist forces.

Orwell also frequently resorts to name-calling. Those who disagree with him politically are almost invariably "reactionaries", "Fascists", or "pro-Fascist". Jack London is "not . . . a fully civilised man."; rather, he possesses a "streak of savagery". Any thought, expression, or even word of which Orwell disapproves is "vulgar", from the cartoon postcards of Donald McGill to Kipling's statement that "He travels the fastest who travels alone" to Yeats's use of the word (!) "loveliness" (Orwell also claims that "Yeats's tendency is Fascist." on p. 273).

It is clear to me after reading this volume that the editors who selected pieces for the three volumes of essays published during Orwell's lifetime made the right choices; they show him at his best. The rest of the material here is hardly worth reading except as a window into the soul of a man who was incapable of viewing the world except through the distorting lens of a commitment to socialism.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best essays in the English language.......2002-09-25

...Country Right or Left is part of a four volume set of essays commissioned by Orwell's wife Sonia. Whatever the criticisms that have been made of her stewardship of Orwell's legacy, these four volumes contain much of the best of Orwell's essays, letters and diary excerpts. This volume covers the early war years and much of the writing is shaded by that war.

This is Orwell at his finest, on one hand a confirmed socialist dedicated to fighting the right whether the Tory party or fascism; one the other hand an anti-Stalinist and critic of the left and always an anti-totalitarian.

Contained within "My Country Right or Left" is some of Orwell's best writing. In "Pacifism and the War", a notorious piece at the time, he accuses pacifists of aiding the fascist cause. "The Art of Donald McGill" is an essay about, of all things, postcards that are popular among the middle and lower classes. The postcards themselves, Orwell argues, say much about England's political and social attitudes. It's actually a perceptive piece of pop art and social commentary. Among my favorites is the essay concerning Mark Twain (Mark Twain- Licensed Jester). Orwell, a great admirer of Twain's, is critical of him for not being forceful enough in his social criticism. He accusation is that Twain pulls his punches far too often. It's a great piece of criticism and is Orwell at his finest.

What holds a large amount of this Volume together are the letters to the Partisan Review, a New York publication that contracted with Orwell to write commentary on England during this early war period. The issues vary from English politics, reflections on the clothing worn by the masses, attitudes towards democracy and so on. All well written, never dull and very often wrong in their predictions. There is much more here including excerpts from his diary, letters to other major figures of the day and reflections on the Spanish Civil War.

This is some of the greatest essay writing in the English language. Even sixty years later the essay's read clearly and give insight to Orwell's thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Orwell--the Noam Chomsky of the War Era.......2002-08-02

This is a great collection of essays and other writers by one of the foremost socialist critics of totalitarianism and domination. It is also a great book for admires of writers such as Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn and Edward said, as all share the same overarching purpose: to be a tireless critic of power and domination wherever it may be found. It is ironic to the extreme that so many conservative revisionists attempt to claim Orwell as their own, which is due to the tragically myopic misreading of his writings, especailly 1984 and Animal Farm. Both books are condemnations of totalitarianism, and in the case of Animal farm, the final page attests to Orwell's repugnance of capitalism. Let it not be forgotten that Orwell fought in the Spanish Civil War in the aid of the socialist-anarchists. This is truly a great collection, which should be required reading for those who may not be familar with Orwell's non-fiction work.

5 out of 5 stars Orwell In His Prime.......2001-01-30

Though remembered today primarily for ANIMAL FARM and 1984, George Orwell was also one of the most brilliant essayists of the 20th Century. This volume (the second of four recently re-released in paperback) shows the range and depth of his journalistic writing. Orwell was a Socialist and avowed leftist, but he never felt compelled to toe the party line. What makes his journalistic writings so lively and thought-provoking is that he constantly challenges the reader to look at entrenched ideas from a fresh perspective. This volume contains his justly famous essay on England, "The Lion and the Unicorn", and pieces on such wide-ranging subjects as Hitler's "Mein Kampf", Tolstoy and Shakespeare, and a spirited appreciation of Rudyard Kipling (politically and artistically not the sort of writer one would expect Orwell to defend). Interspersed with the essays is a selection of Orwell's letters from this period, as well as his fascinating War-time Diary. You may not always agree with Orwell's opinions, but you will never be bored. Orwell was a master stylist, but what really strikes the reader is how startlingly relevant the essays are, sixty years after they were written. An absolutely first-rate collection by a major writer who is long-overdue for reassessment.
