Book Description
Founded in 1978 by architect Steven Holl and bookseller William Stout in an attempt to skirt the editorial control of the reigning architectural magazine culture, Pamphlet Architecture has been disrupting the status-quo ever since. This series of small experimental volumes has introduced important ideas and spurred much-needed debate among students and practitioners alike.
Pamphlet Architecture 23 carries on this tradition with a book selected in an open competition. Johanna Saleh Dickson's entry was chosen from over seventy submissions received from architects, academics, and students from across the nation and around the world.
Her pamphlet investigates the events of May 13, 1985, when a bomb was dropped by police on a Philadelphia row house in order to evacuate its residents-members of the radical organization MOVE. The fire that ensued killed 11 MOVE members and destroyed an entire city block. Tainted by these traumatic events, the reconstructed house located on the site has stood unoccupied for nearly two decades. Dickson proposes an architectural treatment that might facilitate and promote healing within the affected community.
A call for ideas for Pamphlet 24 has already gone out. A winner will be selected in September of this year and the next innovative project will be published in spring of 2003.

Book Description
Learning geography will always be fun with the special tricks you'll learn here. Starting from familiar territory (home, backyard, schoolyard) and moving outwards, this amusing, delightfully illustrated introduction to maps and more teaches street smarts to kids. Filled to the brim with fun games, cool activities, humorous quizzes, and wacky facts, every page turns basic geography into an adventure. Build a model of an early compass to understand navigation--then head out to test your skills. Use the sun, moon, and the stars to get your bearings. Look at a map similar to the one Columbus might have used when he set out to prove the world was round. Hit the road with "a key to the highway" that provides information on tolls, the number of lanes, and other details. Figure out which route goes where. All in all, you'll have a delightful trip--and end up just where you want to be!

Henry Yan's Figure Drawing, Techniques and Tips
ASIN: 158180931X |
Book Description
Bring Your Figure Drawings to Life
To draw the human body with accuracy and confidence, you have to know how its anatomy functions beneath the skin. But like many artists, you may struggle to apply traditional anatomy courses to your work in a meaningful way. This unique guide bridges the gap between observation and creative expression by showing you how to use your own body as a reference tool for better work.
Whether your goal is to achieve tight realism or stylized illustration, Anatomy for Artists goes beyond perceptual instruction, enabling you to blend what you see with what you learn and feel to be true about human anatomy. This active, physical approach to anatomy will allow you to develop rendering skills that capture the human form with greater richness and clarity.
Unlike conventional anatomy books, this guide focuses on the body's movements as opposed to its static structure. As you follow along, you will not only learn the relationships between bones, muscles and tendons, you'll observe these relationships in your own body as you perform various motions and exercises. Detailed illustrations reveal intricate anatomical features and also illustrate how the body's individual parts function together and affect one another.
When you begin drawing again after completing this book, you'll see improvement in your work right away, from rendering details to achieving proper proportions. You'll also experience a greater satisfaction from your drawing as you capture the essence of the human form with greater speed and ease.

I have Paul Riley as a teacher.......2005-04-17
I just wanted to say that Paul Riley is an excellent teacher. I have him for a teacher at King Philip Regional High School. The book may have some errors, but it is easy and I have learned an extreme amount of information about the program, AutoCAD. I hope that you think carefully before looking at other books about AutoCAD because this book is most certainly worth the money. Have fun with AutoCAD!
Paul Riley is my Teacher and he teaches a great course.......2004-01-26
Paul Riley is my Design Technology(AutoCAD) teacher. We use this book to learn the program and he does a great job with making the book easy to learn and not boring to read. Before I started this course i learned alittle about the program from my brother Jason who has a couple of his drawings in the AutoCAD 2004 book. Mr. Riley's book and himself have taught both of us alot about the program. I strongly suggest this book to all that want to learn and use AutoCAD.
AutoCad 2000 is an adequate book for learning atuocad.......2003-08-02
I have personally used this book in a class that was taught by paul riley. Although there are errors in this book, it probably is because some of the actual drawings in the book came from the students at King Philip High School where he teaches. Riley knows his stuff. I actually know the person who drew the giant old house which is used as a challenge drawing.
Easy, step by step progress.......2000-05-06
I have not used this book much yet, but my impression so far is good. Each lesson is presented clearly and thoroughly. Unfortunately, it does not cover orthographic projection, although isometric drawing is covered. It concentrates on mechanical drawing, and does not cover surveyor drawings, and only touches on architectural applications. Sample exercises at the end of each chapter are barely acceptable. It would be nice to have more, and better quality exercises.
This book will teach you the basics of AutoCAD and much more.......2000-04-12
I am a student in highschool and I have used Discovering AutoCAD 2000 and I learned so much from it. I thought I would learn only basic commands but I have learned very complicated commands. My only complaint is that some of the drawings have minor errors that should have been spotted by the editor. I hope to meet Paul Riley someday because he is my AutoCAD 2000 idle. If you have the money make sure you bye this book. The $45 seems like a hefty chunk of cash but this wonderful book is well worth the money.

Nikon User's Guide to Bird Photography.......2005-09-25
Similar in scope to Art Morris's book, but by a Nikon user. Of course, neither _really_ depends upon using a Nikon or Canon, essnetially the same lenses are available from both manufacturers. The techniqe is the thing. But here they differ somewhat as well. Art Morris likes to 'stalk' birds; Chris Gomersall prefers a hide (blind). Perhaps both methods should be studied!
Life in a Hide.......2002-07-01
"Photographing Wild Birds" fills in a space that's been almost empty. This book concentrates on how to position yourself to take good bird pictures, with lengthy discussions of such things as composition and the building and use of blinds (or, as the English prefer, hides). This may reflect its author's European orientation where it appears getting close to birds may be much harder than in the U.S. Many of the top American bird photographers, like Arthur Morris and Moose Peterson seem to prefer the unconcealed approach. On the other hand, that unconcealed approach leads these same photographers to suggest that 600 mm lenses with 2X teleconverters are essential to good pictures. The bird photographer without $10,000 to spend on big glass may prefer to consider Gomersall's techniques. And even the owners of extra-long telephoto lenses may find the techniques suggested by Gomersall useful to get that really difficult bird.
After his discussion of field craft, the author discusses several different assignments that he's had and how he approached them. While interesting, this just supplements the meat that he's provided earlier in the book. Finally Gomersall discusses post-production problems like cataloging and marketing.
Throughout the book there are cameos by other bird photographers like Niall Benvie, but these seem more like interesting garnish than helpful hints. If you are interested in hints from Benvie you'd be better off reading his "The Art of Nature Photography", a good work in its own right.
I'd be remiss if I didn't compare this book to the bible of bird photographers, Arthur Morris' "The Art of Bird Photography". The Morris book devotes more of its pages to the technical aspects of bird photography like film and exposure compensation. And while Gomersall's pictures are excellent, Morris' pictures are breathtaking. But both books are tops in what they teach.
This book may discourage you from bird photography, or at least help you in a realistic appraisal of success. The author talks of arriving in his hide before dawn and leaving after dusk, and of spending days without what he considered a successful picture. These tales of endurance led me to spend several hours in a hide, and I must confess that the pictures I captured were better than my run-of-the-mill shots. But I'm not certain my devotion runs to fourteen hours in a small cramped tent.
But as a bird photographer, I would not want to be without either of these books.

Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition)
ASIN: 086343357X |
Book Description
Whether readers are knowledgeable birders who wish to find out more about photography, or whether they have a photographic background but need to know more about fieldcraft and specialist photography techniques, this book clearly explains how to get fine results using basic 35mm cameras and equipment. Above all, it will increase readers' enjoyment of a uniquely rewarding pastime.
As photographic subjects, wild birds present quite a challenge, mainly because their phenomenal eyesight and (in most cases) acutely cautious nature make them so difficult to approach. However, like any good challenge, bird photography can often be tremendously rewarding, and its popularity is ever increasing. As a result, there is a continual improvement in the standard of work being produced. Far from being just a record of species and behavior, the best bird photographs are genuinely artful images.
The books provides the less experienced photographer with a practical guide to photographing many species of wild birds in a variety of situations, ranging from an ordinary back garden to a remote Scottish island. The author uses a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, and most of the illustrations reflect his preference for natural lighting--although basic flash techniques, which are sometimes indispensable, are also covered. For birders, photographers, nature lovers. For beginner and advanced photographers.
