The realization during the last decade that many water supplies worldwide are affected by arsenic at concentrations above acceptable health levels has motivated research directed at understanding the occurrence, distribution, and mobilization of arsenic in the environment, and stimulated the development of new, cost-effective treatment technologies. Arsenic accumulation and migration is closely tied to its chemical speciation, which is often controlled by a complex combination of abiotic and biotic processes coupled with physical transport. This symposium volume focuses on bridging the gap between different approaches and scales of investigation and on fostering a more unified understanding of arsenic occurrence and behavior, including geological, geochemical, hydrological, microbiological, ecological, and engineering aspects of arsenic-related research. Papers in this volume highlight a variety of new research directed at understanding the sources, distribution, and mobilization of arsenic in the environment. It includes recent efforts in the development of cost-effective treatment technologies and in approaches to natural attenuation and accelerated remediation methods. These topics are thematically organized into three sections in the volume, the first focusing on laboratory studies and theoretical modeling, the second on arsenic behavior and cycling in a range of field settings, and the third on studies associated with treatment and remediation technologies and methods. Of course I gave my own book five stars. This book is largely the proceedings of a symposium held at the fall 1999 American Chemical Society meeting. It is the first book published on perchlorate as an environmental contaminant since its widespread discovery in 1997. Topics range from toxicology to analytical techniques to treatment/remediation. The book starts with the fundamental chemistry of perchlorate and moves on through other topics. I have encouraged chapter authors to make their works readable to a general science audience. Relative to its content, the price is fair; it's a pretty thick book for the money. This book is not for everyone. It's geared more for researchers and regulators. I have tried to make it as complete as the science would allow at the time. Many studies involving perchlorate are underway, and many papers are being published in the literature. However, this book will give consultants, researchers, and students a good overview of what was known in August 1999. Certainly, there have been advances since then, but the information remains valuable and applicable now. A lot of people put a lot of work into putting this book together, and I think it shows.

This book examines one class of combinatorial optimization algorithms -- general iterative non-deterministic algorithms. These algorithms have recently shown significant interest due to their generality, ease of implementation, and the many success stories reporting very positive results.

Iterative Computer Algorithms and Their Applications in Engineering uniformly describes five iterative algorithms for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems, namely simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, Tabu search, simulated evolution, and stochastic evolution. It is the only book to describe in a single volume these five main iterative combinatorial algorithms. The introductory chapter motivates the reader to study and use the general iterative approximation algorithms, while introducing the basic terminology.

The authors present various iterative techniques and illustrate how they can be applied to solve several NP-hard problems. The book includes case studies of real engineering problems and provides comparative analysis using various techniques that the authors have experimented with and solved. For each algorithm, the authors present the procedures of the algorithm, parameter selection criteria, convergence property analysis, and parallelization. There are also several real-world examples that illustrate various aspects of the algorithms, including real engineering problems. Examples are presented wherever appropriate to illustrate any required mathematical concepts.

The book covers various optimization techniques in Engineering but not all.However,the analysis of each algorithm is great with flowcharts and mathematical equations accompanying each subject.
There are many books for Iterative computer algorithms but this one combines all the necessary information to help you develop and test your own algorithm.
The only thing i found negative is its small size for its price.

This was the most intense reading I have done in a long time. This should be recommended reading in all colleges and universities.

"Skin" is a book of essays by the amazingly talented writer and activist, Dorothy Allison. I remember reading [...] Out of Carolina many years ago and thinking I might not get through it because of its gruesome and hideous portrayal of a poverty-stricken, incestuous family living in the South. Turns out that book was Allison's fictionalized account of her childhood. Skin, however, is a finely crafted series of essays with titles ranging from "Gun Crazy" to "The Theory and Practice of the Strap-on Dildo" to "Believing in Literature". She likes to talk about everything people aren't supposed to talk about, including masturbating to science fiction novels, the pain of catching a venereal disease from her stepfather when she was a child (a disease that went untreated, rendering her sterile), the thrill of S & M, butch/femme strap-on sex, and much more just as juicy. Allison's style is fearlessly intimate and unashamed. Her long struggle to escape poverty and find a voice is evident in every page, and in every page her voice is beautiful, loud, and resiliant.

The extraordinary Dorothy Allison can write fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and essays. Skin is her contribution to the essay genre, a collection of two dozen bits of astute rambling across a crazy quilt of subjects stitched together by the fierce honesty her readers have come to expect from all of her writing. Coming from a poor white trash family in South Carolina, she traveled beyond her origins thanks to a rampant intelligence that nothing could dull. A feminist before the word was invented, Allison is also a proud card-carrying lesbian, a writer, mentor, teacher, lecturer, and a woman who is always generous to other writers. Skin deals more explicitly and in greater depth with erotica and sexuality than her other works, so readers would do well to be forewarned. But if you're a Dorothy Allison fan, this is NOT a book to be missed.

An opportunity to get thinking about a few "difficult" subjects, while enjoying a few refreshing lines of thought as well as a no-nonense yet witty style.Being a woman, gay or poor not a requisite, although it might help. If you're neither of the three, buy the book anyway, you might learn something (I did).

Not since Andrea Dworkin's "Woman Hating" (that I read in 1978) have I been so moved by the truth of another writer that I would want to emulate it. In sharing Harris's vision of writing as an "uncompromising revolutionary act" the point is made that the mainstream literary world as well as the "so-called avant-garde and burgeoning feminist critical aristocracy" will not appreciate the lesbian writer who "refuses to obey the rules." To both women, nothing is more important than telling the truth, "refusing all categories, all who would shape your writing to their own use."
