          Book Description

The model theory of fields is a fascinating subject stretching from Tarski's work on the decidability of the theories of the real and complex fields to Hrushovksi's recent proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields. This volume provides an insightful introduction to this active area, concentrating on connections to stability theory.

                Book Description

The volume is based on a course, "Geometric Models for Noncommutative Algebras" taught by Professor Weinstein at Berkeley. Noncommutative geometry is the study of noncommutative algebras as if they were algebras of functions on spaces, for example, the commutative algebras associated to affine algebraic varieties, differentiable manifolds, topological spaces, and measure spaces. In this work, the authors discuss several types of geometric objects (in the usual sense of sets with structure) that are closely related to noncommutative algebras.

Central to the discussion are symplectic and Poisson manifolds, which arise when noncommutative algebras are obtained by deforming commutative algebras. The authors also give a detailed study of groupoids (whose role in noncommutative geometry has been stressed by Connes) as well as of Lie algebroids, the infinitesimal approximations to differentiable groupoids.

Featured are many interesting examples, applications, and exercises. The book starts with basic definitions and builds to (still) open questions. It is suitable for use as a graduate text. An extensive bibliography and index are included.

                  Book Description

The authors present a study of the H-infinity control problem and related topics for descriptor systems, described by a set of nonlinear differential-algebraic equations. They derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a controller solving the standard nonlinear H-infinity control problem considering both state feedback and output feedback. One such condition for the output feedback control problem to be solvable is obtained in terms of two Hamilton–Jacobi inequalities and a weak coupling condition; a parameterization of a family of output feedback controllers solving the problem is also provided. All of the aforementioned results are then specialized to the linear case. For the linear case, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the corresponding problems to be solvable are expressed in terms of two hierarchically coupled generalized algebraic Riccati equations. When these conditions hold, state-space formulae for a controller solving the problem are also given. The approach used in this monograph is based on a generalized version of the Bounded Real Lemma. Finally, the derivation of state-space formulae for all controllers solving the standard H-infinity control problem for descriptor systems is proposed. To establish the key formulae, a parameterization of all internally stabilizing controllers for descriptor systems is also given (both the linear and nonlinear cases are considered in this monograph). Among other important topics to be investigated are the balanced realization, reduced-order controller design and mixed H2/H-infinity control problems. For students and researchers interested in nonlinear control theory for descriptor systems, this book provides both a comprehensive introduction and easy access to advanced topics.

                    Book Description

This book is based upon notes taken by the author at the DMV Seminar on Algebraic Models of Homotopy Types led by H.J. Baues, S. Halperin and J.-M. Lemaire in 1988. The notes have been substantially reorganized and expanded for this publication and now include some additional important proofs. The aim of the work is to provide an overview of homotopy theory from the point of view of algebraic models of homotopy types, leading the reader from the basic definitions in algebraic topology to specific fields of research. The exposition is directed towards graduate students as well as researchers from other fields. Due to the scope and size of this book, only a few complete proofs could be given. But the fundamental concepts and methods of the subject are pointed out, and a number of recent results are included together with the essential bibliographic references. The text begins with a review of the basic notions of homotopy theory. An extensive discussion of rational homotopy theory, emphasizing both the Sullivan and the Quillen models, follows. Next, the Adams-Hilton and the Anick models are shown to yield some integral information. The last chapter gives an introduction to the integral classification of homotopy types, along the lines initiated by J.H.C. Whitehead and considerably developed by H. Baues during the last decade.

                        Book Description

This introduction to the recent exciting developments in the applications of model theory to algebraic geometry, illustrated by E. Hrushovski's model-theoretic proof of the geometric Mordell-Lang Conjecture starts from very basic background and works up to the detailed exposition of Hrushovski's proof, explaining the necessary tools and results from stability theory on the way. The first chapter is an informal introduction to model theory itself, making the book accessible (with a little effort) to readers with no previous knowledge of model theory. The authors have collaborated closely to achieve a coherent and self- contained presentation, whereby the completeness of exposition of the chapters varies according to the existence of other good references, but comments and examples are always provided to give the reader some intuitive understanding of the subject.

                        Book Description

Observant, imaginative, rich with literary allusions and historical echoes, James's travel writings are both literary masterpieces and unsurpassed guidebooks, here together for the first time in one authoritative set (in two volumes: Vol. 1, Great Britain and America: English Hours, The American Scene, Other Travels, and Vol. 2: The Continent: A Little Tour in France, Italian Hours, Other Travels), including four books and 32 essays, most previously uncollected. From a radically changing New York to Provence, Tuscany, and Rome, James visits all the places still on the traveler's itinerary, capturing radiant impressions of French countryside, the hauntingly desolate Suffolk coast, Florentine masterpieces, Venetian color and light. Joseph Pennell's exquisite drawings are reproduced from the original editions.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of perception, understanding, and interpretation.......2006-12-18

Henry James' travel writings on France and Italy are a case study in fine arts perception, understanding and interpretation. He treats each new locale as a new horizon to be engaged, absorbed, and internalized through a hermeneutic of analogical interiority. Roaming within the halls and chambers of French and Italian architecture opens, through the text, new conduits for an understanding of the vast interiority that exists within the self-examining-self. James is a master at relating the space of each location with the thoughts, instincts, relational perceptions and education of the observer. Reading these texts is like engaging each site oneself and discussing with a learned and trusted friend about what one is experiencing, not just what one is seeing. The art work of Joseph Pennell is an amazing addition to these works and masterpieces on their own. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It will be a cherished addition to your collection and a book you will pick-up time and again to walk with the "Master" through France and Italy as you discuss, reflect and remember literary events that where home to these marvels. If you happen to be planning a trip to either France or Italy, take this along to add a level of historical and cultural depth to your experience. Some of what you will read has disappeared into history, but what remains is a beautiful historical and cultural continuity with Henry James as your guide.
