Book Description
This interdisciplinary study explores the evolution, structure, and uses of the image of Georgian Bath, from its genesis in the eighteenth century to its renaissance in the twentieth century. In recent decades there has been both a popular resurgence of interest in heritage and tradition, and a growing academic awareness of the power of imagery in shaping the lives of individuals and societies. There is perhaps no city in Britain so saturated in history and layered with historic imagery as Bath. It therefore provides an ideal case-study to investigate the dynamic fusion and impact of the forces of past and representation. The dominant perception of Bath today is that of a classical and particularly Georgian city. In this stimulating and scholarly study, Peter Borsay examines the construction and development of this image. Its principal components, biography and architecture, are explored, together with the media through which it was constructed and transmitted, as well as its commercial, social, political, and psychological uses. Dr Borsay concludes by relating the findings for Bath to current debates on towns, heritage, and the nature of history.

Making History.......2002-06-17
Think of Bath today and one naturally lights upon the Roman baths and Jane Austen. It is these two features that have helped make the city one of the most visited places in England, where it is not unusual to see a party of French school children parading around the baths, as it is to see a Japanese couple taking afternoon tea in the pump room, if not visiting the newly arrived Jane Austen house or marvelling at the architecture, the ultimate in Georgian elegance. Though the visitors were not always so international, Bath has always attracted tourists, for that is its very essence. It has been a resort since the 1700s, always a place for recreation, never business. Initially the sickly came here to take the waters, but this soon became a highly fashionable pursuit, which one could partake in while also engaging in the perhaps more enticing gambling activities and the exclusive social round. Amazingly such pleasures made Bath the seventh largest British city in the eighteenth century. Fittingly then it was also one of the most written about - by physicians selling the supposedly therapeutic waters, to travel writers, novelists, poets, and ultimately guidebook compilers. If nothing else it was the ultimate hangout of the literati outside of London - Defoe, Burney, Smollett, Johnson and Austen were all known to have visited there. There is thus an inexhaustible textual legacy of the city in which to delve into.
As a much represented city Bath makes a worthy subject for Peter Borsay's innovative historical approach, following on from his interest in provincial urban spaces. His subject is the representation of Georgian Bath as depicted by thousands of writers who had any connections with the city. It is a history of its image rather than its reality therefore, taking in a rich pool of written material - for Bath is according to Borsay an 'imaginative space', its image being central to its place within Georgian society and thereafter. It is also an 'interdisciplinary' study, a current buzzword within the realm of academic research.
Borsay is well qualified to undertake such a laborious enterprise involving relentless poring through infinite sources of literature pertaining to Bath, much being the product of eminent writers but an equal amount belonging to now forgotten guidebook scribblers. Within the field of urban history he has already put the city on the map for representing a hugely important provincial centre that drew influence away from the metropololis in early modern England. He has written prolifically on spa towns and their highly sophisticated social activities in this period, and it is right that the most important of these should recieve such a detailed and scholarly study focussing on its all important image - used to draw both health seekers and pleasure seekers alike.
Borsay compiles his sources well and with judgement, pulling together a highly readable and lucid study. The contemporary representation of Bath to Georgian visitors offers the most engaging part of this book, but of further interest is its image within 1990s society. Within the index we find Richard Nash and Thomas Gainsborough, but also the likes of Simon Schama, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair. For Bath, to this day, continues to portray an image of Georgian neoclassicism and elegance, and one that is continually being exploited by both historians and politicians.
Borsay might have analysed pictures and printed materials more within this study as Bath has a rich pictorial past, but this perhaps merits a wholly seperate work. As it stands this book will be of interest to anyone interested in Georgian Bath - be their concern historical, geographical, literary or architectural. It is the only comprehensive study to be found on Bath's image in history, and as such it is a welcome addition to its vast bibliography, perhaps to be used as an aid for anyone contemplating a further foray into its past. Few cities would merit such an exhaustive study of its own imaginative legacy but few cities have depended so much on its own image, this having long been the basis of its economy. It is an irony, however, that Jane Austen, a woman who wholly disliked Bath for its mercantile marriage market - and satirised it so pointedly in her novels presenting the most negative of pictures - should be the current selling point of that city, and a major attraction upon the tourist heritage trail.

Book Description
In the fall of 2000, Elyn Zimmerman was a Visiting Artist-in-Residence at an artist's colony in Vermont. While there, she took a group of photographs which recorded the passage of water through a nearby shallow stream bed. The rocks and pebbles underneath the water's surface, together with the play of light and shadow overhead, broke the surface of the water into cacophonous patches of black and white. This play of rhythmic and turbulent patterns is what Zimmerman managed to capture in the drawings she made based on these photographs, drawings which continue her black-and-white vocabulary but reveal an emotion and spontaneous gesture yet unseen in her work.

Book Description
The seventh edition of this market-leading text continues its tradition of providing a solid foundation of economic understanding for use in managerial decision making. It offers a practical treatment of economic theory and analysis in an intutive, algebra-based format. Its focus is on presenting those aspects of economic theory and analysis that are most relevant to students of business administration, and a wide variety of examples and simple numerical problems are used to illustrate the application of managerial economics to a vast assortment of practical situations. The nature of the decision process and the role that economic analysis plays in that process are emphasized throughout. This major revision is designed to maximize accessibility for a student audience with little or no background in economics or higher-level mathematics. The text focuses on the economics--not the mathematics--of the managerial decision process.
Customer Reviews:
AVOID THIS BOOK AT ALL COSTS.......2007-10-19
This is one of those textbooks that you're forced to buy for the class, but after struggling through 2-3 chapters you resolve to ditch the book and just rely on class lectures. Following this textbook is like following the tenured professor who may be a star academic in his/her field, but when it comes to teaching their own subject their presentation skills are abysmal at best.
The chapters of this book are very difficult to follow. The language is very dry. The equations are squeezed between paragraphs, they're poorly displayed, and in some cases they're just flat out incorrect. If you're forced to use this book, buy the cliff's notes and any other study aids you can get your hands on. Maybe even find some older editions of some econ books that cover the same subjects and use them as supplements.
When you truly apply yourself, textbooks are supposed to help you understand the subject matter and help supplement what you don't pick up in lectures. This textbook just makes me want to cut my losses and drop the class (hoping I can retake it with an different prof who uses a different textbook).
Covers everything .......2007-09-27
When buying this book at amazon I thought might be it will not cover everything including chapters and problems but trust me I could locate everything that this book should cover.
Thanx to Amazon.
An outstanding text for the study of managerial economics!.......2006-10-06
As an instructor of economics, I give high marks to Mark Hirschey in his compilation of a textbook designed for studying a subject integral for any student of business or administrative sciences. It is designed primarily for those who may not necessarily have a strong quantitative background but need to understand the fundamentals of decision making and its application of economic concepts. The study of management comes from economics in that a manager makes decisions to maximize the objectives of an organization by efficiently allocating limited resources given limited choices or alternatives. The means of efficiently utilizing resources form the basis for making sound economic decisions whether an individual is running a small business operation or directing the workings of a major corporation.
Hirschey provides excellent examples to support the concepts that he presents in each chapter. There are a total of 18 chapters along with appendices. Each chapter tries to relate both management and economic principles to the workings of a business entity and show what real world problems may impede the applications of theoretical concepts. The manager is both a decision maker and a risk taker, and each decision he/she makes has both short-run and long-run results. One need not have an extensive quantitative background to attempt to solve the problems that Hirschey presents at the end of each chapter.
Mark Hirschey has provided a clear and concise text for understanding the economic applications to decision making in the business world. It is not surprising that a number of academic institutions use this book as the standard text for their managerial economics classes both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teachers should find it suitable to use for enhancing the learning processes of future business and professional leaders with its numerous illustrations and examples of important concepts and its continuous references to contemporary issues.
Very Disappointed.......2005-09-17
I am using this text for a managerial economics class for MBA students. I selected this text because it includes chapters on statistics, linear programming and risk, which I am covering in the class. Unfortunately, it is filled with errors - typos, incorrect formulas, and misrepresentation of basic economic concepts, such as derived demand. Some of the typos and other mistakes make concepts very confusing for the students. I am extremely disappointed. I expected much better from a book that is the eighth edition. I do not understand how it went to print with so many mistakes. I have contacted the publisher. I will not be using this text again.
Good at fixing a problem.......2005-09-12
This company was quick to respond to problems and I find them reliable.
