Matrix Computations (Johns Hopkins Studies in Mathematical Sciences)(3rd Edition)
ASIN: 0198534183 |
Book Description
This is a new paperback edition of probably the most important and widely read text on numerical analysis. It is the distillation of what the author learnt about the computation of matrix eigenvalues by dint of trying all methods known to him on computers he helped to make. He was establishing the special nature of these computations as he wrote, and this, along with his emphasis on understanding rather than proving theorems, resulted in an informal and very readable work which became an almost instant classic.

Does Not Get Any Better Than This..........2007-04-08
This book is really something else.
I found it in my boss' collection, and my appreciation to his taste of books doubled instantly as I started going over the pages. I was aware of the book through Golub and Van Loan's endless citations to it (as AEP) whenever they reach a hard to prove theorem on eigenvalues.
Wilkinson presents hardcore material with clarity, I really appreciate the authorship. For those who share my background (electrical engineering), the authorship is similar to Gallager's "Information Theory and Reliable Communication", or Wozencraft's "Principles of Communication Engineering".
Wilkinson is surprising in this book however. Immediately, after hardcore numerical stability bound derivations, he starts giving practical examples, does not appear to talk down to the reader.
This book is a treasure. Wilkinson is my hero!
Very likely, the book by Parlett "Symmetric Eigenvalue Problem" will be a good companion. When someone borrows your AEP, you can continue learning from SEP.
Book Description
Large-scale problems of engineering and scientific computing often require solutions of eigenvalue and related problems. This book gives a unified overview of theory, algorithms, and practical software for eigenvalue problems. It organizes this large body of material to make it accessible for the first time to the many nonexpert users who need to choose the best state-of-the-art algorithms and software for their problems. Using an informal decision tree, just enough theory is introduced to identify the relevant mathematical structure that determines the best algorithm for each problem. The algorithms and software at the ‘leaves’ of the decision tree range from the classical QR algorithm, which is most suitable for small dense matrices, to iterative algorithms for very large generalized eigenvalue problems. Algorithms are presented in a unified style as templates, with different levels of detail suitable for readers ranging from beginning students to experts.

Wow.......2002-07-25
My high school did Love of the Nightingale my freshman year, and it's the most amazing play. I read it the first time and liked it, but when I read it again the play struck me as brilliant because I got lots of foreshadowing. Several years before they did Our Country's good, but I was littile (I went to see my sister), so I don't remember it. Amazing playwright alert here, people!
Love of a nightingale.......2002-01-05
I also have never read this book but my college is staging love of a nightingale i think that timberlake wertenbaker writes with such poise this book cant be missed.
The play love of a nightingale is in a greek style but the plot is so intriging that anyone who previously thought greek tragedies boring will be proved wrong this one keeps you reading. i should know as a college production being forced to pick a greek play we werent pleased we must have got the best one possible brilliant to stage brilliant to read this book is a must if u are considering staging a greek production dont send ur audience to sleep liven them up with philomele's urging desire to know about sex and when she wishes she didnt. If the rest of this book is as good as love of a nightingale its worth it.
One of the greatest playwrights, not to mention female........1998-06-18
This book of plays is one of the best and most interesting I have read. Wertenbaker tackles many subjects including female cross-dressing, female sexuality, and the plight of the criminal first sent to Australia. Very different topics and all well written.

Great show.......2006-03-21
If you haven't seen Our Country's Good you are missing out on a great piece of theatre work. It has magnificent dialogue and the plot is very good.
An amazing piece of drama.......2006-01-25
As an A level theatre studies student, "Our Country's Good" is, for me, an extraordinary simulacrum of our current trauma, and the ways in which art can both enlighten the best in us and help us to transcend the intolerable worst.
The last reviewer, who stated the play as `stupid', obviously has no imagination and knows little about the underlying themes and context within each character and the play as a whole.
Rich, funny, haunting, and deeply moving, Wertenbaker has searched history and found a humanistic parable for our harsh modern era: theatre is what makes us human in the face of absolute cruelty.
"Our Country's Good" is definitely a must-read and see for anyone who believes in the ability of the theatre to move and change lives.
Good God, How I Hate This Play.......2004-12-27
I was in this play in college (also as David Collins, same as another reviewer, ironically) and yet I absolutely hated this play. Not only do I think that the dramatic action is just plain stupid (the structure of the play completely inhibits any dramatic build), most of the monologues do not read at all.
The male and female leads have a barely developed relationship that is almost never seen onstage. The male lead is possibly the most boring priss ever written. Supporting parts are barely examined or are introduced and then dropped (i.e. Watkin Tench, Collins, Meg, etc.) The play further ignores huge character points that were developed in the book, for instance, the past relationship between Dabby Bryant and the male lead. The only character in this drama worth playing is Harry Brewer who nonetheless is still a bizarre character whose Gollum-Schizophrenia monologue is almost as stupid as his lover's "If you live, I will..." monologue. How in God's name you actually build her speech in any fashion I'll never understand.
Essentially, the play tries unsuccessfully to mesh together realism with various Brechtian devices. While I can appreciate the play as something different from a lot of what is on the modern stage, sometimes change is not a good thing, as this piece of artistic pretension demonstrates.
"We left our country for our country's good...".......2000-06-01
How do you begin? One of the most interesting plays of at least the last 15 years, Timberlake Wertenbaker opens up for any audience a stunning tempest of plots, sub-plots and characters, from Harry Brewer to Meg Long. Each character is different and each has their own story to tell, each in their own way. I was first introduced to this book through my school studies as a lot of people are, but the following two years were intensely enjoyable, what higher praise if there is a play that can make A-Levels more bearable? I don't think I could say anything more profound than that as anyone else who has read it will agree. It is also the ideal play for a school production, a cast from between 11 - 23 people and as many males or females as you want. Perfect.
A marvelous comedy-drama.......1999-11-07
One of the more touching ensemble plays I've ever encountered (and acted in). Every character has a moment of introspection, and the interactions between the characters sweep warmly from political debate to screwball interpretations of "theatre" to romance---both budding and struggling to survive. This play also has the virtue of being highly readable offstage. I give it my highest recommendations.

Letters to George.......2006-05-09
In autumn 1988 Max Staford-Clark directed George Farquhar's Restoration comedy, The Recruiting Officer, on the stage of the Royal Court Theatre. It was a smash hit both with critics and audiences.
Each night, after rehearsal, Stafford-Clark would return home and write to Farquhar reporting on the day's work. In these Letters to George, the man from 1988 instructs the man from 1706 on the changes in taste, theatrical fashion and social behavior which have overtaken the play.
Max is not above chiding George for the odd patch of 'sloppy writing' or speculating on the conditions of the Restoration theatre which had shaped George's play.

Book Description
Our Common Country is a collection of informal addresses, eighteen in all, given by Warren G. Harding as president-elect that defined his vision for the United States. What makes these addresses as relevant today as they were in 1921 is the unsettled mood of the country. Even though World War I is now a distant memory, today's Americans have suffered through similar conflicts. At a time when the general consensus of Americans was that "things had gone to hell in a handbasket," President Harding tried to provide them with inspiration.
Addressing different groups of the population-mothers, veterans, patriots, farmers, businessmen, the press-he sought to send a consistent personal message of reassurance. Although the former president was much maligned after his death, his good works during his term of office speak for themselves and show concern for his fellow Americans. His warmth, strength of character, and intelligence are demonstrated throughout these addresses. Harding spoke to his own time, yet these addresses speak to our own confusing times as well.

Book Description
The NGO HIV/AIDS Code of Practice Project is a joint initiative of:
ActionAid International * CARE USA * Global Health Council *
GNP+ * Grupo Pela Vidda * Hong Kong AIDS Foundation * ICASO * International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies * International Harm Reduction Association *
International HIV/AIDS Alliance * World Council of Churches
The global momentum to address the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS is greater now than at any other time in the course of the pandemic. With this comes new hope and new challenges.
Over the last twenty years, there has been a considerable increase in the number and range of NGOs involved in responding to the multiple challenges presented by HIV/AIDS: NGOs undertaking HIV/AIDS work; NGOs integrating HIV/AIDS-specific interventions within other health programming, such as sexual and reproductive health and NGOs mainstreaming HIV/AIDS within development, human rights, and humanitarian programming. There have also been significant changes in the global funding environment, particularly in ensuring that the lessons learned over the past 20 years are used to guide the allocation of resources in scaling up responses to HIV/AIDS.
These changes both support and complicate the process of expanding the scale and impact of NGO programs, so urgently needed. The proliferation of NGOs and programs has, at times, occurred at the expense of accountability and quality programming and has led to fragmentation of the NGO "voice" in the HIV/AIDS response.
To address these new challenges, a multi-agency project was set up to develop the Code of Good Practice for NGOs Responding to HIV/AIDS. The project aims to:
* support evidence-based programs by outlining the principles and evidence that underscore successful NGO HIV/AIDS work
* assist NGOs to improve the quality and cohesiveness of their work on HIV/AIDS and strengthen their accountability to their partners and beneficiary communities
* foster greater collaboration between the wide variety of NGOs now involved in responding to HIV/AIDS
* renew the NGO voice by enabling NGOs to commit to a shared vision of good practice in their programming and advocacy.
Over 160 NGOs around the world are signatories to Renewing Our Voice: Code of Good Practice for NGOs Responding to HIV/AIDS.
The principles set out in this Code can be applied to the diversity of HIV/AIDS around the world and provide invaluable guidance for:
* organizational planning
* the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, including advocacy programs designed to create and sustain a supportive legislative and policy environment for effective programming and that promote the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and affected communities
* advocacy efforts to ensure effective scaling up of HIV/AIDS programs
* allocation of resources.
The Code is available as an accessible paperback book, with a summary wall poster included. PDF files of the Code, along with support materials are also available online at www.ifrc.org/what/health/hivaids/code/
