About the Author
For his lifelong work in bioremediation and in the application of molecular methods to microbial ecology, Dr. Ronald Atlas received the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) award in Applied and Environmental Sciences. He chairs the ASM's Public and Scientific Affairs Board Environment Committee and is frequently asked to advise the government on related matters. Dr. Atlas is also a professor of biology at the University of Louisville where he teaches undergraduate and graduate microbiology courses.
Dr. Richard Bartha has conducted research for over 30 years on the environmental fate of manmade synthetic chemicals, on methods ofbiodegradability testing, and on the bioremediation of soil-, water-, andairborne pollutants. Dr. Bartha has authored or co-authored 150 scientificarticles in his outlined research field. As a professor at Rutgers University, he teaches courses on microbiological and ecological topics. He has been elected Fellow of the American Society for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Inspiring reading........2000-08-29
A very inspiring and reminding book for people writing scientific papers.All the figures and citats makes it so funny to read. You don't have to be in the department of agronomy to get a good idea for your paper from this book. After reading I just longed for continuing my writing field with new ideas and it's frontpage is so coulorful so for me it's not only a book but also a piece of art.

This book has become the standard for a complete, state-of-the-art description of the methods for unconstrained optimization and systems of nonlinear equations. Originally published in 1983, it provides information needed to understand both the theory and the practice of these methods and provides pseudocode for the problems. The algorithms covered are all based on Newton's method or ‘quasi-Newton’ methods, and the heart of the book is the material on computational methods for multidimensional unconstrained optimization and nonlinear equation problems. The republication of this book by SIAM is driven by a continuing demand for specific and sound advice on how to solve real problems.

The ultimate self-teaching book for Newton-type algorithms that address small or large systems of nonlinear equations. A comprehensive treatment of general unconstrained optimization, least-squares optimization, and also well-determined systems. Unusually well-written, with a nice blend between underlying theory and practical implementation requirements. Complete pseudo-code within the appendix enables one to create their own program in any language. Alternatively, Fortran source code created by the authors (UNCMIN) can be obtained from Netlib on the web. SIAM calls this book a "Classic" for good reason.
I understood it!.......2000-12-01
Looking for a text that explains the maths and the implementation of optimisation? I needed to write a program that included numerical optimisation, but I didn't understand the maths. I'd tried to read some other books on the subject, but I gave up because they presumed too much background knowledge and because they were written in an academic format (all proofs, greek letters and algebra) too obscure for me to wade through.
This book explains everything in plain english. When there is a new concept to be introduced, they begin with a practical example of the problem and then step through the solution. Any proofs are accompanied by graphs and words. The emphasis is on practicality and concepts rather than algebraic rigour.
I recommend this book to anyone who needs to create their own optimisations, or who wants to understand what goes on inside their software.

a new divine comedy.......2006-01-28
The short stories about Belacqua are the most beautiful stories Beckett had ever written. They are so picturesque that you can feel the atmosphere with him. The short stories are about love, drinking and poetry. In Dante and the Lobster, Belacqua tries to roast a toast to a specific point. It takes all his energy to make the preparations for this ritual. In Fingal, Belacqua takes his girlfriend Winnie out for a ride to Poltrane. In the end he missed her and rode the way back with a stolen bike. In a wet night he walks in the rain to Alba. On his way to her, he gets controlled by an officer. In the control he pukes all over the shoes of the officer and tries to clean the shoes with a newspaper. In this moment you are all by yourself and laugh out loud. You can't hide your joy of this lyrical depiction. The connection between the ten short stories is the life of Belacqua. He dies in one of the later stories by chance in a hospital. It is so funny because in an earlier story he hasn't got the strength to kill himself and Ruby.
As you see, Belacqua needs a lot of girlfriends in the short stories. He fills it with black humour and it is a joy to read.

Though some people may be frustrated by "More Pricks than Kicks'" discontinuity of time and seeming discontinuity of plot, they mistake their own reaction. "MPTK" is a stark but strikingly beautiful collection of short stories unified by the main character's striking personality. That character is Belacqua Shuah, Samuel Beckett's Dubliner anti-hero; he, auto-biographically, has many elements in common with the author, which makes the book read somewhat like a honest and creative confessional.
Sometimes humorous, somtimes shockingly pessimistic, the short story format works surprisingly well, often allowing for especially clever closing images or phrases. The short story format also makes reading Beckett, rarely an easy task, a touch more accessable.
But through it all, Beckett, the master of the declarative sentence, constantly condemns his main character; Belacqua cannot find it within himself to shed a tear when one of his three wives dies, nor does he buy his new wife a new ring, recycling his old wife's ring (inscripted with her name and all) for his supposed new love. This incorrigible bumbler is intellectual to a fault, and dies friendless and unmourned. So all in all, read about Belacqua, but don't be him.
Read "Yellow" also.......1998-04-22
"Yellow" is worth serious attention as well as "Dante and the Lobster".

By turns alright and horrid, this collection/novel is not the thing for you if Beckett's later novels (_Malloy_,_Malone_ _Dies_,_The_ _Unnamable_) or plays (_Godot_, _Endgame_) have attracted you to the area. More Pricks Than Kicks is the work of a young man, and one who is visibly struggling to get out from under a perturbing combination of Joycean influence and inedibly rich bombast (making this, to some palates, a game of spot the difference). *Dante and the Lobster* is a worthwhile read and comprises the vague first layer of the palimpsest that grew steadily sparser and attractive over the course of his career. *A Wet Night*, however, is simply horrid. Buckets of obsfucation poured through a fine seive of humor; little gets through. Leave the muck.
(why rated then an 8? the worst of Beckett is still better than so much else...)
Still, there's something of a diary to a young artist's work. Portrait would not be inappropriate, though Beckett, the artist he became, deserves better.

Farrow is required reading.......1998-08-30
Of scholars in the field who have published extended studies of Beckett's early prose (Dream of Fair to middling Women, More Pricks Than Kicks, Murphy, and Watt) three stand above the others and are required reading on the subject for scholars. Anthony Farrow's Art and Allusion ... is one. It is hampered by the lack of an index and extraordinarily poor proofreading. Lawrence Harvey's Samuel Beckett: Poet and Critic is another. Published in 1970, it is out of print, a big shame. Harvey's is the only serious study of Beckett's poetry. The style of both Farrow and Harvey is discursive. Rubin Rabinovitz's The Development of Samuel Beckett's Fiction is the third, written in a more concise scholarly style that makes it the most entertaining of the three for the non-specialist. Rabinovitz is likely to be the most useful to the specialist as well, though of course this depends on what you're after. I have not read John Pilling's new book Beckett Before Godot, and there are, as one would expect, numerous article-length studies of the early prose that are required reading for the specialist.

Beckett's Bile.......2000-08-08
This book isn't for everybody. I consider myself a great fan of Beckett and have read this particular book several times and there are parts of it I still don't understand. This was written when he was a young man, still heavily influenced by Mr. James Joyce. This would account for the many words I couldn't even find in the dictionary. People looking for an introduction to Beckett should consider the novels Molloy or Malone Dies. If you're willing to hazard the big words in More Pricks than Kicks that made me so unhappy, you will find a terribly funny book. Beckett's greatest charm is in his humour. Sure his books make you think, but don't think too hard or you'll miss the simple delight of a good laugh.
