Jane Goodall is the most famous primatologist, possibly the most famous field biologist, of the 20th century. Her chimpanzee research did more to increase human knowledge of the lives of our closest relatives than that of any other scientist. It's in large part due to her example that primatology is the closest thing to a female-dominated science.

But in 1986 Goodall gave up fieldwork for a higher, more pressing calling: rescuing chimpanzees from inhumane conditions in captivity and preserving the species from extinction. Jane Goodall: 40 Years at Gombe is a pictorial tribute to her life, her studies of the chimpanzees, and her unflagging efforts to motivate human beings on their behalf.

"Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference." Goodall began her research by giving the chimpanzees names, by observing them as nonhuman individuals. Her activism is directed toward the human individuals: scientists who use apes in research, Africans who live near wild apes, children in Africa and in the industrialized world who can learn to value other creatures for themselves. Goodall says of this last project that "I think Roots & Shoots is probably the reason I came into the world. Yet I couldn't have done it without all those years with the chimpanzees and an understanding that led to a blurring of the line between 'man' and 'beasts.'" --Mary Ellen Curtin

Book Description

Introduction by Dr. Jane Goodall. On the occasion of Dr. Jane Goodall's fortieth anniversary of groundbreaking research with the chimpanzees of Gombe, the Jane Goodall Institute has joined Stewart, Tabori & Chang in paying homage to the woman hailed by the Christian Science Monitor as "a heroine, in a hero-less time."

In the words of Stephen Jay Gould, "Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees represents one of the western world's greatest scientific achievements." Set on her path by famed anthropologist and paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey, who believed in her patience and persistent desire to understand animals, Goodall established the Gombe Stream Research Centre. There, her profound scientific discoveries-including the observation of chimpanzees making and using tools-laid the foundation for all future primate studies.

Filled with photographs from the Institute's archives-many never-before published-along with the work of some of the world's top photographers, this beautifully illustrated volume traces the story of Dr. Goodall's work from its singular beginning to the Institute's present-day international activities. It is sure to appeal to Dr. Goodall's millions of admirers the world over, and to serve as a source of inspiration to many more.

Dr. Jane Goodall is one of the world's most recognized scientists, the recipient of numerous awards, the subject of many documentary films, and the author of more than ten books for children and adults, including the best-selling In the Shadow of Man (1971).

Book Description

This book offers a unique insider's perspective on the unfolding discovery of a crucial link in our evolution: Proconsul, a fossil ape named whimsically after a performing chimpanzee called Consul.

The Ape in the Tree is written in the voice of Alan Walker, whose involvement with Proconsul began when his graduate supervisor analyzed the tree-climbing adaptations in the arm and hand of this extinct creature. Today, Proconsul is the best-known fossil ape in the world.

The history of ideas is set against the vivid adventures of Walker's fossil-hunting expeditions in remote regions of Africa, where the team met with violent thunderstorms, dangerous wildlife, and people isolated from the Western world. Analysis of the thousands of new Proconsul specimens they recovered provides revealing glimpses of the life of this last common ancestor between apes and humans.

The attributes of Proconsul have profound implications for the very definition of humanness. This book speaks not only of an ape in a tree but also of the ape in our tree.

5 out of 5 stars Brings you up-to-date on Proconsul.......2005-09-22

If you enjoy reading about the history of paleontological discoveries as much as I do, then this is a book for you. It's a well-written and informative overview of what is currently known about Proconsul and some related apes. The text doesn't drag at any point; on the contrary it moves along, informing the reader the entire way. I hope to see more from these authors.

5 out of 5 stars easy science.......2005-09-12

I ordered this book from Amazon, which is good because had I scanned the first few pages in a bookstore I might have put it back on the shelf. The reason being that it begins with a whole lot of personal history concerning both Shipman and earlier researchers of the 20th century. Readers will know that some "science" books are heavily oriented toward biography and I personally am not very interested in that genre. In the event, however, this book turned out to be very good.

By the time I finished the book I had come to appreciate just how much the history of paleontology has influenced its current state. That and I've been reading similar books for five decades and this background plus the bi-monthly headlines about the NEWEST DISCOVERY in the popular press can really become an overload, especially as theories in the field are so changeable. So the first half of the book which deals, often from a biographically oriented perspective, with this history was very helpful. And Shipman himself is no dogmatist, treating all fairly as far as I could tell. Also the general theme of not forcing our current catagories (ape/monkey,in this case) onto the fossil record was very helpful.

The second half of the book is more involved with the science itself. Ever wonder how a fragment of a jawbone can lead some researcher to identify the animal as an adolescent female member of the ape family? Read this book and wonder no more. It was just amazing to see how many general conclusions can be drawn from sometimes very limited fossil remains and if you don't already know I suggest you buy this book to find out. There's plenty of science in the last chapters and very manageably but not condescendingly served up.

Oh, "ape in a tree": Proconsul: a)fossils found in a hollow tree trunk b)lived in or among trees c) is in our family tree. Did I miss any?

5 out of 5 stars An insider's journey through the discovery and history .......2005-06-08

Alan Walker's involvement with the discover of fossil ape Proconsul began when his graduate supervisor analyzed the tree-climbing adaptations of this extinct creature: Walker's history of the evolution of ideas surrounding the create is almost as engrossing as the focus on the last common ancestor between all apes and humans itself. This insider's journey through the discovery and history of the ideas of Proconsul follows evolutionary theory as a whole, providing an African adventure of research conducted in the Leakey tradition. Told in the first person, The Ape In The Tree will engross not just scientists but also non-specialist general readers interested in evolutionary science.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for undergrads and beginners in primatology.......2000-05-28

This book is a wonderful introduction to primate behavior, ecology and conservation. A collection of articles originally published in Natural History magazine, this book provides a perfect balance of the above topics in primatology. If you are just getting started in the field or you are simply curious about our primate cousins this book is great. If you are a seasoned primatologist, this is a fun weekend read!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of skillfully introduced papers........1998-02-19

Natural History magazine has published a wealth of information about primates, written by leading experts in field research. Students of primatology, and anyone interested in animal behavior and ecology, will find this anthology relevant and informative. These studies demonstrate the diversity of our closest animal relatives and the intricacies of their lives and relationships amongst themselves and with other species.

The writings of field scientists such asChristophe Boesch, Robert Harding, Dawn Starin, Thomas Struhsaker and Patricia Wright cover wide taxonomic and geographic ranges. The editors' glue that effectively binds these essays together is the excellent prefacing overview accompanying each section (Behavior, Community Ecology, Diet, Reproduction and Conservation). These writings demonstrate the skills of biologists in translating field observations into literate and eminently readable images of their primate subjects.

This anthology provides valuable testimony tothe contributions of field studies in understanding our primate kin-- their context in nature, and the strategies they employ for coping with daily life and the encroachments of mankind.

    4 out of 5 stars A good overview.......2005-03-15

This book's strength is its geographical listings of bizarre creatures that haunt the dark places in our world. From Bigfoot and Yeti to "merbeings," this book covers it all. You'll discover that, even in America, Bigfoot has pseudonyms - such as Skunk Ape and MoMo. The entries, which describe the creatures' suspected habitats, include sightings.

    4 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2003-04-08

Overall I enjoyed this book. The material was presented seriously but with small touches of humor that lightened what could have been an otherwise dry read. After a lifelong interest, I have begun to research the subject seriously to prepare for my first "hunt". This is the first of several books I have ordered to add to my library, and I would recommend it to anyone who is as interested in the subject as I am.
That being said I did have a few problems......
First is the books length. I read it cover to cover in one evening, and I was hoping for something a little more in depth. The illustrations were nice but I don't think that they really added that much, and I would have liked a little more actual information.
Second is the aquatic or "merbeing" treatment in the book. I understand that the authors included these reports in an attempt to cover the subject a thoroughly as possible, but mermaids....I thought that was a bit silly. I realize that most people would consider the subject of Bigfoot itself to be pushing the limits of believability and that some suspension of disbelief is necessary to even consider the possibility seriously. I just felt that by including aquatic primates in the subject matter only damaged the credibility of an already incredible topic.
All that aside I enjoyed the book, and I feel that it would make a fine addition to any collection of the strange and unusual.

5 out of 5 stars Good guide, great drawings, awesome theories.......2002-12-23

This is an awesome field guide, which has lots of information on the history, the up-to-date cases, and the various types that indicate these are more than hoaxes. The references and material up front and after the case descriptions give a good overview that I guess some reviewers completely missed.

    What a great read...

    2 out of 5 stars Bigfoot, Bigmistake.......2002-03-13

Although attempting to be a pack-along "Field Guide" for any encounter with an unknown creature, you suddenly realize that most of the contents of this "Field Guide" is reaching for information that just is not available. If though, you are on a camping trip and wish to wow your younger audience, this could be your guide. It is even illustrated with black and white line drawings with what is described in the descriptions. To be blunt, more a field guide for someone in the past few centuries than any actual case evidence. I had been looking for more theory and evidence than just meer far reaching speculations. I hope to find another book on this subject that will deal with hard factual evidence to scrutinize, rather than just more old conjecture.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2001-04-13

if you're fascinated by the field of cryptozoology,or if the field is new to you,or maybe you're into archaeology,or maybe just into folklore from around the world, this is one of the books for you.you might have had a sighting yourself and just can't seem to articulate exactly what it looked like;there's a chance it might be illustrated here.

      Book Description

A Natural History of the Brown Mouse Lemur provides the most complete look at the behavior and ecology of mouse lemurs.

There are very few books that address the biology of nocturnal primates. There are even fewer that delve with any detail regarding the behavior of specific species. These animals are difficult to follow. Their diminutive size, the thickness of the vegetation, and their nocturnal habits, make the study of their habits a demanding task.Through a trial of patience, Sylvia Atsalis has undertaken this task. Here she provides an in depth view at the life and behavioral patterns of these tiny primates.

As a recent student in one of Irven Devore's courses, I found him to be an astute, witty, and engaging man who cared as much for his students as his research. He has the rare and admirable quality of being able to hold a roomful of football players spellbound with anthropological theory. Although we dissected the Yanomamo culture in depth, Devore hardly glorified Chagnon's study, or referred to the Yanomamo as an "inherently savage" people. In fact, he tended to be critical of Chagnon's methods and such broad cultural characterizations. As an anthropology concentrator with a primary interest in primate biology, I also feel I can safely attest that his knowledge of primates is likewise solid and I recommend his writing on them without reservation.

I really like this book. I'm using it for an independent study class and it is ideal. I don't need to contact my instructor for clarification because it is well-written and has good examples.

4 out of 5 stars I give it an A..........2006-12-30

I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future math class. But overall, I give it an A...

                              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very useful edition of a great play.......2005-08-14

Macbeth has always been one of Shakespeare's most popular plays. It is vivid, has blood & murder, magic, visions, treachery, and just deserts. I mean, what is not to love? The play moves along quickly and isn't one of the longer plays. For all these reasons and more, audiences love it.

But there is a lot more to the play than the plot outline might suggest. Shakespeare brilliantly works out the subtleties of character through the action, interactions, and self-discussions in the play. It isn't a simple "action" play, it is also a masterwork of revealing the character of the characters even when they are themselves unaware of the trap they are leaping into.

I am partial to the Arden editions because I trust the text, love the extensive notes, and the introductory and additional material that helps give the play context and talks about sources Shakespeare almost certainly used. In this case Holinshed's "Chronicles of Scotland". Throughout this edition there are also discussions of the textural problems of this play: where some things seem to be missing, what might be interpolations, and so forth.

This is a very useful edition of a great play.

5 out of 5 stars Shakespeare on the danger of messing with prophecy.......2005-05-13

William Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth" was performed at the Globe Theater in 1605-06. The "Scottish" play was a calculated to be pleasing to James I, who took the throne of England after the death of Elizabeth Tudor in 1603. It was not simply that the play was set in the homeland of the Stuarts, but also that when Banquo's royal descendants are envisioned the last of them is the new King. (Note: Shakespeare does a similar sort of tribute to Queen Elizabeth when in the final act of "Henry VIII" the the Archbishop prophesizes great things for the infant Elizabeth. However, not only is there doubt that Shakespeare was the sole author of that particular history, it was not produced until 1612-13, ten years after Elizabeth's death.)

The play chronicles Macbeth's seizing the Scottish throne and his subsequent downfall, both aspects the result of blind ambition. However, one of the interesting aspects of "Macbeth" for me has always been its take on prophecy, which is decidedly different from the classical tradition. In the Greek myths there is no escaping your fate; in fact, one of the points of the story of Oedipus as told by Sophocles is that trying to resist your fate only makes things worse (the original prophecy was that Oedipus would slay his father; it was only after Jocasta sought to have her son killed to save her husband that the prophecy given Oedipus was that he would slay his father and marry his mother). In the Norse tradition prophecy is simply fate and manhood demands you simply resign yourself to what must happen.

But in "Macbeth" there is a different notion of prophecy that is compatible with what is found in the Bible: specifically, the idea that human beings simply cannot understand God's predictions. This is the case both with those who failed to understand the prophecies that foretold the birth of the Christ but also the book of Revelations, where the fate of the world is detailed in complex and essentially uncomprehensible symbolism. When Macbeth is presented with the first set of prophecies by the three witches, he is understandably dubious: he will become thane of Cawdor and then King, while Banquo will beget kings. However, when the first prophecy comes true, Macbeth begins to believe that the rest of the prophecy may come true. His fatal error, at least in the Greek tradition, is that he does not allow fate to bring him the crown, he takes active steps by slaying King Duncan. He compounds this error by projecting his ambitions onto Banquo; although Macbeth has Banquo killed, his son escapes to keep the prophecy intact.

Now the witches's prophecies are deceptively clear: no man born of woman may harm him and he is secure until trees start walking. Macbeth, who now believes in the inevitability of prophecy, fails to understand the fatal concept of loopholes. Thus, the nature of prophecy becomes an integral part of the play's dynamic.
