5 out of 5 stars Fun and informative .......2007-03-16

A fun and informative little book. Most insightful on pre motor transport technology. Most fascinating for those interested in history or in Horse drawn Transport.

Some of these little carriages, such as the double decker omnibus and the tree transport, blow the mind in regards to the genius of our forbears in how they applied the technology they had. Then there are the dump wagons.

A must for any library of anyone interested in pre-motor technology.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful history/reference book.......2003-12-04

A unique book covering vintage horse drawn vehicles of the 19th century. Besides the well written text, I found the illustrations, photos and diagrams amazing in their detail. There are over 250 illustrations. Truly a wonderful reference for anyone into antique transportation history.

book is good for drawing from scratch. it's helpful for someone just beginning to study art.

5 out of 5 stars For young art lovers.......2005-09-09

On library day at school my daughter usually brings home an art book of some kind. Most of the time it was a book by Lee J. Ames. Marissa really wants to draw well but at 8 doesn't understand that you have to work hard at it. I suggested to her that she get a piece of white paper and trace over the drawings and then color them in. She has really made some beautiful drawings using this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good book.......2005-01-17

I am a horrible but determined artist. I have enjoyed the "How to Draw 50..." series since I was very young. However, this particular book is not helpful: majority of the drawings are far too intricate to follow, most of them are unknown plants and flowers, and it fails to teach something.

Unlike the "How to Draw 50 Athletes" this book doesn't have a goal, other than to instruct you on how to mimic some plants and flowers. Whereas, after going through the "Draw 50 Athletes," I learned how to draw the human body; the muscles, head features, proportions, and how they moved.

This book is not for beginners I assure you of this. I understand nature is harder to recognize and capture, but the book just was too difficult to follow, I was only capable of drawing 12 of the 50, and I do each one many times, and I still showed no improvement.

It's just not worth owning. You won't learn anything, and you wont enjoy the process of drawing the plants and flowers. I promise.

In My Humble Opinion

4 out of 5 stars Botanical Illustration.......2007-04-02

I purchasd this book on the recommendation of someone who is a very experienced botanical illustrator. It has been very informative and goes into all aspects of this wonderful art. I will continue to use this book for reference while practising my plant illustration. I have not been disappointed in this book but rather amazed how much help it has been to me!

5 out of 5 stars all you ever needed to know!.......2002-09-26

This book really has all you ever needed to know about botanical illustration - history, mediums, styles, scientific considerations, and more. A must for anyone going into this field.

4 out of 5 stars For those with some experience, Technical Drawing.......2000-05-02

This book focuses on technical drawing as the basis of botanical illustration. It brings together an understanding of plant structure with drawing technique as the keys to success.

Selecting, preserving and examining plants is discussed. A variety of plant structures are shown in detail with the process of building up the drawing.

Pencil, ink and scratchboard are the main media covered. The addition of color is presented in watercolors and acrylics. There are several beautiful color plates, some historical and some by the author.

This is a book best suited to an artist with some experience. The wealth of technical information will provide the artist with a greater understanding of and proficiency in botanical work.

            4 out of 5 stars Good Start.......2005-03-31

I liked the book because it gets you started in drawing flowers. Then you have to practice.

1 out of 5 stars doesn't do what it prentends to do.......2003-02-12

Yet another book that does not do what it pretends to, namely teaching you how to draw flowers. All it does is present you with options, techniques and tools including papers. But after going through a,b,&c it jumps to l,m, etc. Specifically the book TELLS you to draw instead of showing ways to learn, to set down shapes, how to draw forms. It jumps directly to the conclusion of the drawing. A few scriblings are aproposed as ... sketchings, only these wont inspire, help or encourage a beginner as they are as bad as ... what beginners do when they haven't received instructions and tips and what makes them say ''I'm no good.'' The illustrations (pen or sepia) serve as examples to copy at best: try and try again until your rendering begins to resemble the author's.
It's all very well to tell the beginner to ''respond to texture and pattern'' (p. 30), it would be better to demonstrate how to translate that response to paper. This is what I was after when I started. Beginners certainly feel and respond, that's what makes them want to learn how to draw. Unfortunately such a book lets one down by not leading the aspiring artist through the motions of lines, shading, lighting effects, and so on.
She then jumps directly to pastel: more unattainable goals for someone who's still struggling with pencil.
A word on the illustrations: the ones in pen are perfectly drawn and very realistic (you could be tempted to photocopy them to use in a trompe l'oeil or to paint). The pencil drawings lack life, remain 2-dimensional, laying flat on the page, and the sketchings fail to draw you into the scenes.

As a final word, I strongly recommend NOT to get any of the books from the ''Learn to Draw'' series. They all are poor in techniques, don't show much in terms of textures and setting down the basics, and so they fail to assist in establishing clear foundations to one's drawing.

There are far better instruction books out there.

Bestselling author and Hollywood historian David Wallace unveils 25 enchanting buildings and homes from Hollywood's glorious Golden Age. Hollywood buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike will savor this in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the histories of these spectacular structures, as well as the titillating revelations about many of their famous occupants.

The intimate portraits of these famed spaces-including the homes of Hollywood superstars such as Cary Grant, Gloria Swanson, Cecil B. DeMille, and Charlie Chaplin, plus locations like Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Max Factor building-demonstrate the innovation, ingenuity, and drive that gave birth to Hollywood.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover. There are so many interesting stories and tid bits about the stars of Hollywood's golden age. From the suave Cary Grant to the powerful DeMille to the comic W.C. Fields. The homes are anywhere from spectacular to homey. This book also covers some famous theaters and restaurants. I highly recommend it!

                5 out of 5 stars Voyeur.......2006-04-27

I loved this book. Something about the pictures... one feels like you're actually there... technically part of it is that the human eye sees inside and outside. Photographers get one of the other... but not both. In these pictures it feels like you are walking through a house... seeing it as a guest of the famous resident... and seeing it as you would if you were there in person. You can look at the room, the furniture, or out the window. There's an emotional quality that was stirred in me.

Likewise, the text is telling tidbits and gems that the famous owner might reveal to a friend... One learns things that you wouldn't dare ask. Its a great marriage between the past private and public lives of people that we all know. Though they are long in their graves, they come to life in this fascinating book.

I'd been in some of these homes. The Charles Laughton home in Palos Verdes, Portugese Bend, was a fascinating journey as a kid... walking over Peacock Flats, through the Vanderlip estate... looking for feathers, and hoping not to be caught. The fear that Quasimodo would emerge and chase us, I can still feel it. I think that going back there in the book, this was my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars A Bricks and Mortar Tour of Hollywood Elegantly Presented.......2006-03-13

When Lucy and Ethel took the bus tour of the movie star homes on "I Love Lucy", you will undoubtedly recall Lucy finding herself bobbing for grapefruit at Richard Widmark's palatial estate. Now we can all see what is behind the other side of the barrier wall thanks to this elegant coffee table book compiled by fervent Hollywood historian David Wallace. With some beautiful photos and descriptive, trivia-laden text, he includes twenty-five buildings and homes that were designed and built during Hollywood's golden era.

Painstakingly restored to their original grandeur, they represent a variety of eclectic architectural styles from Art Deco to Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial. While the typical landmarks such as Graumann's Chinese Theater are here, the book is highlighted by the homes of screen legends like Carole Lombard, Gloria Swanson, Cecil B. DeMille, Chales Laughton, Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, and Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard. The furnishings within the homes are not so much lavish as surprisingly idiosyncratic and insightful to the personalities inhabiting the settings. The photographs by Juergen Nogai are often stunning and give evidence of both the creativity and decadence pervasive at the time. This is definitely a fun one to peruse.

                    Book Description

The spectacular achievements of space exploration have long overshadowed the commercial impacts of space development. Here, Jonathan Goodrich brings together, in a single source, detailed information about the significant business aspects of space commercialization. Intended for top executives in the space and aerospace industries--as well as for firms contemplating entering the space business--the book addresses the marketing, legal, economic, technological, and insurance issues involved in space exploration and development. Throughout, Goodrich focuses both on opportunities in and obstacles to space business in order to help firms tailor their decision-making and strategic planning activities appropriately and profitably. Following an introductory chapter on the uses and importance of outer space to America, Goodrich devotes separate chapters to such important facets of space business as space operators, materials processing in space, spinoffs from space technology that can be incorporated into products for ordinary use, the potential profits offered by the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program, identifying customers for orbital facilities, the role of space insurance, and major space laws. Of particular interest is a chapter entitled "How to Market to NASA" which identifies the major NASA field operations and their needs, explains the procurement process, offers practical guidelines for marketing your capabilities to NASA, and lists available special assistance programs. In his conclusion, Goodrich assesses the future of space business. Two appendixes list space business publications and firms involved in space commerce respectively. Invaluable for any firm that seeks to capitalize on the opportunities presented by space exploration, this book offers a clear-headed appraisal of the potential profits possible as well as a guide to minimizing the substantial risks involved in pursuing those profits.

5 out of 5 stars Makes more sense today, then a decade ago........2002-05-16

This is an interesting book, which is much more relevant today, than it was a decado ago. The commercialization of space was just an academic topic when this book was written. But today with space tourism, and the nascent industry of private space companies on the verge of blooming, this is a great book to read, for space enthusiasts, or investors, or aspiring astronauts, professional or amatuer!
