Book Description
Specially designed computer software is revolutionizing procedures for structured or rational drug design and discovery. The
Guidebook on Molecular Modeling in Drug Design serves as a manual for the analysis ofmolecular structure and the correlation of these structures with pharmacological reactions. Intended as an introductory guide for advanced students and professionals with an interest in computer-assisted modeling for drug design and discovery, this bookwill also be of interest to medicinal and organic chemists, pharmaceutical researchers, pharmacologists, and biochemists who want to gain further insight into this rapidly advancing field.
Molecular modeling is assuming an important role in the understanding of three-dimensional aspects in the specificity of drug-receptor interactions at the molecular level. This research area has become a well-established discipline in pharmaceutical research. It has created unprecedented opportunities in assisting medicinal chemists in the design of new therapeutic agents. Advances made in computer hardware and in theoretical medicinal chemistry have brought high-performance computing and graphics tools within reach of most academic and industrial laboratories, facilitating the development of useful approaches to rational drug design.

Maybe it's for the specialist, or was.......2004-06-13
This book is structured as set of monographs by different authors, apparently invited specifically for this book. That's a format with strengths but also some serious weaknesses.
First, the strengths. The seven chapters, plus a glossary chapter, cover a fair bit of ground. The chapter on computation hardware and graphics started aging the day it was written, but the other chapters all offer insights. The topics are varied, and include basics of docking, a nice intro to crystallization and crystallography, a description of the approval process and the team required, and a description of several trails from target molecule and native ligand to serious drug candidate. The glossary is worthwhile, and could have been expanded well beyond its 19 pages.
The weakness of this format is that, although each chapter contains introductory material, the book as a whole is not written at the introductory level. It's not quite a text, more like seven unrelated chapters flying in close formation. No one, clear underlying pattern unifies the different piece. Maybe there is a pattern, but the reader must know it already. But in that case, would the reader really need the introductions? Also, the glossary was written without respect to the other chapters so isn't really a glossary of the book that contains it.
Finally, I have to point out that this book's copyright date of 1996 makes it a bit old, by the standards of the field.
There are a number of interesting facts to be had here. They are all isolated points, though. The reader must already have a pretty good idea of the whole picture that these points fit into.
Guidebook on Molecular Modeling in Drug Design.......2000-05-15
The book emphasis is on different drug design techniques, specifically; The molecular modeling perspective in drug design, Molecular graphics and modeling, Molecular modeling of small molecules, Computer-assisted new lead design, Experimental techniques and data banks, Computer-assisted drug discovery, and Modeling drug-receptor interactions. The book covers in depth the docking of small molecules with protein receptors. Also the book surveys the molecular modeling packages currently used, their usage, strengths and weaknesses. The two main weaknesses of this book are (1) few illustrative figrues, (2) subjects overlapping (due to the fact that a group of authors contributed in writing this book). The book is really a guide book on molecular modeling and drug design as the title suggested.

Book Description
Marston helps women navigate what is one of the most powerful and extraordinary stages in lifemidlife. In one of the first books to address the spiritual, emotional, and psychological dimensions of midlife and the challenge of this transition for women, Stephanie Marston, acts as a midwife to make this rite of passage meaningful and transformative. The empowering message of this book is clear: midlife offers women an opportunity for rebirth and renewal and can be one of the most profoundly significant times in a womans life.
Download Description
Who am I really? What do I love? What are my real needs and dreams? And if I'm not fulfilling them now, when will I? If Not Now, When? Midlife is a wake-up call that requires we pay attention to where we stand in our lives. It is a time of intense reevaluation. Yet it is also a time of immense opportunity from which every woman can emerge a new person. Now in one of the first books to address the spiritual, emotional, and psychological dimensions of the midlife transition, acclaimed family therapist Stephanie Marston acts as a "midwife" to help women make it the extraordinary and transformative rite of passage it can be. Culled from interviews she conducted with women at every stage of midlife, as well as her own personal story, Marston shows us that now is the time to reclaim our long-neglected passions and dreams. Now is the time to find our own voice and rediscover our strengths. Now is the time to recognize a more authentic self beyond the roles of wife, mother, and career woman.
Far from glossing over the unavoidable challenges of midlife, Marston shares her own and other women's struggles and triumphs. You'll meet women who embrace their physical changes--and find a new, confident femininity . . . women who dare to reexamine all their relationships--and find greater equality, be it in marriage, friendship, or at work . . . women who confront the ghosts from their past--and get in touch with the freedom-loving "wild girl" of their youth. Filled with Marston's trademark wisdom and humor, as well as the voices of women like you, If Not Now, When? can lead you to discover your deepest, most enduring self and help you create a future brimming with tremendous possibilities. Its empowering message is clear: Midlife can be one of the richest, most profoundly significant, and most satisfying times of your life.

She speaks my words.......2007-07-11
I was so lost...then I found this book. Finally a book that makes sense of it all, love the humor. If you are seeking answers to midlife change, I highly recommend this book...Thank You Stephanie Marston I am finally at peace with my transition.
ASKS THE RIGHT, HARD QUESTIONS.......2007-03-19
Don't read this book unless you're ready to be challenged with some very important questions we need to ask ourselves to prepare for the next years of our lives. I found the book helpful and, in fact, I've quoted Stephanie Marston in my own book. Pamela D. Blair, Author, The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Midlife and Beyond The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond
Agree with Cathy Goodwin.......2004-04-27
I agree with Cathy Goodwin's observations about the shortcomings of this book. I simply couldn't relate to the women profiled and their comfortable lives. In fact, I found it all rather depressing. IMO, people who are financially well-off just don't seem to realize just how much having money gives them opportunities, choices and comforts that less well-off people will never have. Maybe Ms Goodwin should write a book for the rest of us!
Fluffy, not much substance.......2002-11-06
Have you ever read a book that was really a lengthened magazine article? That's this book. I ordered it on the heels of reading Martha Beck's excellent "Finding Your Own North Star." By comparison, this book has very little insight despite the many personal anecdotes.
The book's main point is that women reaching mid-life in this generation face unique situations (probably true) and that we are unequipped to face them (also probably true). But what about giving us some strategies, tools, or means to achieve insight? Nothing between these covers that fits the bill.
Magical endings for the well-off midlife yuppie.......2002-09-26
As a career coach who works with midlife career changers, I was hoping to get some insights from this book. I will put it on my website as a resource for midlife women. However, most of my female clients will not find themselves in this book.
Marston writes to women who are secure financially but not emotionally -- the ideal target market for a therapist. Yet many midlife women find themselves facing career dilemmas. They may be laid off or simply find their work unrewarding. They may be financially stressed, with college-bound children and divorce-bound husbands. Some are widowed, tragically, or faced with aging parents who demand time and money. Relatives crawl out of the woodwork, hoping for handouts.
Marston does describe one woman feels helpless when losing her job -- but a few pages later she's happily set up in a new business and already has her first large order! Stories like these can create unrealistic expectations. I talk to women who get laid off after twenty-plus years, blow through their severance, and start a business from necessity, not self-fulfillment. The corporate world is not kind to midlife women. And while a few do find orders flooding in, most struggle with marketing dilemmas. After living comfortably with a husband or corporate security blanket, many women are completely unprepared to take the big step to business ownership.
So, while I appreciated the insights of this book, I found myself thinking, "Who has time to do all this self-reflection?" And the section on beauty misses a key point. We can be as self-accepting as we please...
I also felt the book painted a rosy picture of friendships (not everyone has reached middle age with close "gal pals"). I find that many midlife women turn to family -- parents, siblings, grown children -- and have less time or interest in friendship. Others find they want to distance themselves from family but get calls for everything from money to signatures on cremation permission. I'd like to see more stories of conflict and resolution.
Don't get me wrong: I think the book has valuable insights for many women. It's well-written and the stories, despite their magical qualities, entertain. The chapters on sex and relationships seemed right on. But if you're not a comfortably-off aging yuppie, you might find many of these insights irrelevant.

The ruthlessness of survival.......2007-04-12
Setting aside its profound Jewish interest, the book is an outstanding chronicle of WWII, rich with detail concerning the hardships, the cold, the Russian-Polish landscape, the polyglot bands of homeless partisans and refugees, their ruthless tactics for survival, and the ugliness and arbitrariness of death. My favorite book by one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
A gripping tale of courage and survival.......2005-10-23
This is one of Levi's last works, the story is about a fictional group of Jewish partisans operating behind German lines in Russia and Poland from July, 1943 to the end of World War II. Levi himself joined a partisan band in 1943, although it was in Italy, not Russia, and he was soon captured and sent to Auschwitz. Although the plot and characters are fictional, Levi has gone to great lengths to make his story as authentic as possible. This novel is based not only on his own personal experiences, but on conversations he had with others, and on other published accounts of the experiences of Jewish partisans operating behind enemy lines on the Eastern Front (Levi even provides a bibliography at the end). This is a book of hope, not of despair. Levi explicitly eschews accounts of the death camps in this work; it is not a work of "Holocaust Literature". It is a story of the Jewish resistance with universal overtones.
What makes this book more than just another "war story" is the rich cast of characters, drawn with sympathy, humor, and without a trace of sentimentality. Typical of these is the leader of the partisan band, a man of great charisma, and a brilliant decision-maker, who understands that in the forest, surrounded by enemies, with the life-sustaining morale of his small force hanging in the balance, his violin is almost as essential for the group's survival as his weapon. What gives this book such great authenticity is that none of the characters are paragons of virtue; they are ordinary, flawed people forced to draw upon every last ounce of courage and resourcefulness within just to survive to fight another day. Front and center to the survival of the group is the fierce loyalty its members have to each other. Even as the war ends and they are no longer in deadly peril, the members of the band share a common destiny in which the fate of one is the fate of all.
I found this book very difficult to put down once I started it. It would be hard to find a more vivid, well-told tale of what it was like for the partisans along the Eastern front of World War II.
A must read.......2002-04-22
While the book isn't a true story, the characters are based on real people Primo Levi met during the holocaust. It surprises, inspires and humbles the reader to know that humanity can exist in the midst of such horrible chaos.
I liked the fact that there is not happily ever after, that the characters must fight to produce their own future. But, it is good to know that along their journey, they met many who would help them.
Primo Levi is a wonderful writer. He stays true to character, winds the subplots into the main plot without jerky interruptions and allows the characters to be real, not stereotypes.
Gripping tale of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstan.......2001-04-23
This fictional account of Jewish partisans fighting their way through war ravaged eastern Europe is incredibly moving. The characters are so realistically human in their reactions to the chaotic conditions that they encounter. The book explores a chapter of WWII history that is not very well known and does so from the perspectives of ordinary people caught up in the swirling events and joined together by a desire to survive as well as by a common hatred of the Nazis. There is an incredible life affirming wedding scene in the midst of countless grim episodes that demonstrates the human capacity of endurance. The translation is excellent and the narrative is crisp and fast moving. One of the best literary works dealing with the European war.Unforgettable!.
A great story .. sad, moving and very human!.......2000-09-10
Primo Levi, from what I know was a very gifted and sensitive man. Levi never forgave himself for surviving the holocaust, he felt guilty because his own life was spared, eventually he committed suicide. A very little known fact of World War II, was the work of the Jewish Resistance. Millions of European Jews perished in the holocaust, some managed to get away, a few managed to hide, and there also were the Jewish Partisans; those who fought. If not now .. when? is an absolutely beautiful story of those souls who fought the oppression. This is not a graphic book of the suffering of the holocaust; this is a great novel about a group of people who in spite of all the suffering keep moving forward. They do hold it together, they make friends, love, sing, and cry, celebrate and mourn. This is not a war glory story, it is a people story, and how they changed and adapted, how they kept going. Yes, the overused expression of "triumph of the human spirit" so appropriately describes the theme of the book, but not always; Levi was realistic enough to see to that. I was profoundly touched by this book and thoroughly enjoyed it as a non-Jew. However, I never saw this book as a journey to Palestine, as suggested by some. These were people rising up to fight injustice and to stay alive, they largely moved aimlessly. To interpret this book as a part of the Zionist ovement would in my opinion be wrong. This is translated book, it is excellent in English, and it must have been even better in Italian. I wish I could read it in its original language.

How "If Not Now, When" literally saved my life! .......2005-11-02
The purpose of my writing this review is to allow other potential readers to know how this book, "If Not Now, When?", literally saved my life and this is by no means an exaggeration!
I was in the process of trying to find out why God chose me to relocate to the midwest after my brother suddenly passed away at age 60 years. Devasted at his passing, now living in his home, and really feeling "aimless, lacking in goals and direction for my life", I had an overwhelming desire to call my cousin Marcia Stafford, the author of this wonderful book, to discuss something totally unrelated. In the course of the conversation, we both realized that my actions were literally "orchestrated by God Himself" because we ended up on the topic of her needing to find someone to edit her book.
When I told her I had done editing since the 1960's, she asked me if I would edit her book and the rest, as they say is history! This was a particularly difficult time for me, but this new-found direction and responsibility led me to editing a book that taught me how to hear from God, how to find out what His Divine destiny and plan was for my life and most importantly, gave me the tools I needed to put into practice every principle I found myself reading about. Words are only words without "practical application" and this little book is jam packed with answers to questions we all have regarding: "Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is God's purpose for bringing me into this world? How do I get on course with what I believe is what God called me to do in this life? How do I discipline myself to pursue a closer and more intimate relationship with the Father? Relationships with others and what the implications are in my search for meaning and purpose in life, be it family, friends or otherwise? Who am I in the scheme of things? and so many other issues that we all have on our plates just because we are human beings trying to fulfill God's divine destiny for our lives". After all, this is not a dress rehearsal. This is the real deal and we owe it to ourselves and others to GET IT RIGHT!
All of these areas and more are dealt with in this little book that anybody can just drop into their tote bag or brief case and pull out at any given time for inspiration, information and direction. I thank God for directing me to the job of editing this book because I found purpose when beginning to work on it, felt myself feeling "alive" while going through it line upon line, precept upon precept and I am all the better for having had the awesome opportunity and experience of helping to see this book through to publishing and sale.
I always say, "This is God's little masterpiece and folks all over the world are going to blessed for having read it". I know I have been blessed by it and this book will always be one of my proudest and most valued possessions to be used as a reference book along with my Bible. Chocked full of biblical references, the reader will always be directed to what God has to say about every aspect of this book.
Marcia Stafford has taken many years of indepth study and consolidated it into a small paper back book that I feel is a "must have" for anybody searching for their meaning and purpose in this life. There is no way the average person can come away from reading this book lacking in some answer as to what direction they should be headed in and what principles they should be pursuing to solve the confusion that has been clouding their minds and spirits for so long.
This little book, "If Not Now, When?" saved my life because it got me up off the futon where I was languishing in despair over the loss of my precious older brother and got me back in that race called "life". With God's help and the help of the easy access I have to this "little book of dynamite", I will never get back to that hopeless, helpless state I was in prior to experiencing it.
I challenge every potential reader to get ready for an experience of a lifetime when they pick up this little book written by God through us. That's right! We know God inspired everything that went onto the pages of this book and He alone gets all the glory, all the honor and all the praise for getting it out there to the masses. Try it! "If Not Now, When?"
