Book Description
Biomedical Applications of Microprobe Analysis is a combination reference/laboratory manual for the use of microprobe analysis in both clinical diagnostic and research settings. Also called microchemical microscopy, microprobe analysis uses high-energy bombardment of cells and tissue, in combination with high resolution EM or confocal microscopy to provide a profile of the ion, metal, and mineral concentrations present in a sample. This allows insight into the physiology and pathophysiology of a wide variety of cells and tissues.
This book describes methods for obtaining detailed information about the identity and composition of particles too small to be seen with the naked eye and describes how this information can be useful in diagnostic and biomedical research.
Key Features
* Up-to-date review of electron microprobe analysis
* Detailed descriptions of sample preparation techniques
* Recent technologies including confocal microscopy, infrared microspectroscopy, and laser raman spectroscopy
* Over 100 illustrations with numerous specific applications
* Contributions by world-renowned experts in the field
* Brief summary of highlights precedes each chapter

Book Description
Now fully updated to cover recent developments, this book covers the closely related techniques of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) specifically from a geological viewpoint. Topics discussed include: principles of electron-target interactions, electron beam instrumentation, X-ray spectrometry, general principles of SEM image formation, production of X-ray ‘maps’ showing elemental distributions, procedures for qualitative and quantitative X-ray analysis (both energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive), the use of both 'true' electron microprobes and SEMs fitted with X-ray spectrometers, and practical matters such as sample preparation and treatment of results. Throughout, there is an emphasis on geological aspects not mentioned in similar books aimed at a more general readership. The book avoids unnecessary technical detail in order to be easily accessible, and forms an up-to-date text on EMPA and SEM for geological postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, as well as those working in industrial laboratories.

Excellent Book on the Basics.......2000-05-19
This book is great for someone who has a little background in physics and calculus. It gives a good breakdown of how the probe works and what kinds of analyses it works best for. This is not an in-depth book on quatitative analyses, but rather, an excellent place to start!

Book Description
The development of near-field optics marked a major advance in microscopy and our ability to develop nanoscale technologies. However, the tapered optical fiber widely in use as the optical near-field probe has serious limitations in its fabrication, its optical transmission efficiency, and its use in arrays. Fabrication of Silicon Microprobes for Optical Near-Field Applications reports on several technological approaches to using silicon micromachining techniques for fabricating microprobes without the drawbacks of conventional optical fiber probes. The authors have developed a simple, effective method for batch-process production of silicon cantilevered probes with apertures as small as 20 nanometers. They have investigated in detail the probes' optical performance characteristics and show how the silicon probes overcome the limitations of the optical fiber probes in terms of production throughput, optical throughput, reproducibility, simplicity of instrumentation, and mechanical performance.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A383114. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Spectral imagery provides multi- dimensional data, which are difficult to display in standard three-color image formats. Tyo, et al. (2001) propose an invariant display strategy to address this problem. This approach is to mimic the dynamics of human perception. The dimensionality of the data are reduced by using a Principal Component (PC) transformation, and then displayed by making used of a Hue, Saturation, and Value (HSV) display transform. This study addresses the PC transformation strategy, looks for a global eigenvector via visualization of HSV color space information, and examines the suggested algorithm to provide the most intuitive display. The user interface created in this thesis is capable of computing the necessarily implementation of the proposed strategy, viewing selected Region of Interest (ROI) in HSV color space model in 3D, and viewing the 2D resultant image.

Book Description
This book gives a comprehensive account of both experimental and theoretical aspects of electron microprobe analysis, and is an extensively updated version of the seminal first edition, published in 1975. The design and operation of the instrument, including the electron column and both wavelength- and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometers, are covered in the first part of the book. Experimental procedures for qualitative and quantitative analysis, using both types of spectrometer, are then discussed. Matrix (‘ZAF’) corrections, as required for quantitative analysis, are treated in some detail from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. Special considerations applying to the analysis of ‘light’ elements (atomic number below 10) are covered in a separate chapter. The emphasis throughout is on a sound understanding of principles and the treatment is applicable equally to the electron microprobe in its ‘classical’ form and to scanning electron microscopes fitted with X-ray spectrometers.

Book Description
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) models have become widely used tools and play a fundamental role in much of the application of statistics today. In particular, ANOVA models involving random effects have found widespread application to experimental design in a variety of fields requiring measurements of variance, including agriculture, biology, animal breeding, applied genetics, econometrics, quality control, medicine, engineering, and social sciences.
This two-volume work is a comprehensive presentation of different methods and techniques for point estimation, interval estimation, and tests of hypotheses for linear models involving random effects. Both Bayesian and repeated sampling procedures are considered. Volume I examines models with balanced data (orthogonal models); Volume II studies models with unbalanced data (nonorthogonal models).
Features and Topics:
* Systematic treatment of the commonly employed crossed and nested classification models used in analysis of variance designs
* Detailed and thorough discussion of certain random effects models not commonly found in texts at the introductory or intermediate level
* Numerical examples to analyze data from a wide variety of disciplines
* Many worked examples containing computer outputs from standard software packages such as SAS, SPSS, and BMDP for each numerical example
* Extensive exercise sets at the end of each chapter
* Numerous appendices with background reference concepts, terms, and results
* Balanced coverage of theory, methods, and practical applications
* Complete citations of important and related works at the end of each chapter, as well as an extensive general bibliography
Accessible to readers with only a modest mathematical and statistical background, the work will appeal to a broad audience of students, researchers, and practitioners in the mathematical, life, social, and engineering sciences. It may be used as a textbook in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, or as a reference for readers interested in the use of random effects models for data analysis.
Book Description
Readers of Jane Austen’s six great novels are left hungering for more, and more there is: the marvelous unpublished manuscripts she left behind, collected here.
Sanditon might have been Austen’s greatest novel had she lived to finish it. Its subject matter astonishes: here is Austen observing the birth pangs of the culture of commerce, as her country-bred heroine, a foolish baronet, a family of hypochondriacs, and a mysterious West Indian heiress collide against the background hum of real-estate development at a seaside resort.
The Watsons, begun in 1804 but never completed, tells the story of a young woman who was raised by a rich aunt and who finds herself shipped back to the comparative poverty and social clumsiness of her own family.
The novella Lady Susan is a miniature masterpiece, featuring Austen’s only villainous protagonist. Lady Susan’s subtle, single-minded, and ruthless pursuit of power makes the reader regret that Austen never again wrote a novel with a scheming widow for its heroine.
The special joy of this collection lies in Austen’s juvenilia–tiny novels, the enchantingly funny Love and Freindship, comic fragments, and a (very) partial history of England–romping miniatures that she wrote in her teens. Their high spirits, hilarity, and control offer delicious proof that Austen was an artist “born, not made.”
Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable volume of miniatures by Jane Austen.......2000-05-25
For all the people who know already Jane Austen's six published novels, this volume will be another opportunity to admire the genius of the British author. This volume begins with two unfinished novels. Sanditon, begun in the last year of Jane Austen's life, deals with issues unknown in her other novels, like the culture of commerce and hypocondria. The Watsons, begun in 1804, is a work more similar to Jane Austen's most known work. Both writings are delightful. However, perhaps even more delighful are some of the other works on this volume. Lady Susan, a short epistolary novel about a scheming widow, is one of the most ironic and original works by Jane Austen. And last but not least, there is Jane Austen's juvenilia, works created when the author was between fifteen and eighteen years old. These miniatures are a testimony that the humor and mastery of language of Jane Austen was present at an early age. Among the best of the juvenilia are Love and Friendship, the very partial history of England and Jack and Alice. All of this early works (which were occasionally quoted on the film Mansfield Park) present a very sharp humor. There are also at the end poems and three prayers. The excellent edition and introduction by Peter Washington makes this Everyman's Library volume a must for all fans of Jane Austen and English literature.
A Little Bit of Everything.......2000-05-25
I read this book beacause I am a Janeite. I had been looking for a volume of Juvenalia, but I bought this instead. It is a must for anyone who likes Jane Austen. It includes her juvenalia (all three volumes), her poetry, two of her prayers, leters, Sanditon, Lady Susan, and The Watsons. I liked the "History of England" and I absolutely adored Sanditon (even though it is just a fragment). There are many fragments in this volume and unfinished works, but they are wonderful to read even though they laeve you wishing that there were an ending. I also noticed that this volume included "Venta" which was written shortly before Jane Austen died. It is full of Jane Austen's delightful satire and includes many pieces which I found delightfully funny. I enjoyed reading Love and Friendship simply because of its wonderful quotes like "run mad as often as you choose but do not faint". I would reccommend this to any Jane Austen fan and even some non-fans. My best friend had never read Jane Austen before and now she is a Janeite for life. One thing that I like about this book is that it is a well-made hardcover book and will not fall apart on me after multiple readings and rereadings!

Customer Reviews:
An Unfinished Masterpiece, Such a Tragedy That Jane is Dead!.......2000-05-20
Every loyal Janeite must read Sanditon. It was destined to be her greatest work, but unfortunately she stopped working on it and died shortly after doing so. Sanditon is unique in its setting,a small seaside resort, and its characters. Jane Austen continued in her sucession of "deficient" men by the name of Edward (those who have read Sense and Sensibility or Love and Friendship know the other two)but, this Edward is perhaps the worst man that she ever created because he "considers it his duty" to seduce women. Do not be repelled by the villany of Edward though because there are many wonderful and deep characters to be found. The Parkers are very amusing. Who could fail to be amused with a trio of Hypochondriacs? There is also the visting Charlotte, the unfortunate cousin Clara, a wealthy young heiress of mixed racial background, and several other characters. You will yearn for an ending (of course as a fragment it does not have one)and if you are like me you will want to know more about Sydney, Mr.Parker's brother who is quite frequently mentioned and praised by the Parkers. Sadly none of the continuations of Sanditon are perfect or seamless as some may claim, however, I believe that the ending by Anna Lefroy is the closest to the intent of the author.
Nice completion of an Austen remnant.......1999-12-04
Only 11 of the 30 chapters of this book were actually written by Jane Austen. However, the completion made, though somewhat livelier than I am used to from Austen, fits in quite well with the start that had been made.
The plot is extremely light compared to Austen's other books -- there are indeed, some very annoying characters, but what ill-spirited characters there are give no real distress to the heroine of the book, as is usual in the other books. Many of the "comic" characters are allowed to show some improvement (which is odd compared to such Austen creations as Mrs. Bennett, or Robert Ferrars), but who knows? The 11 chapters written by Austen seemed written in a very light spirit, and perhaps something like this novel would have been the result.
I think it a very good read.
Excellent carry-through of Austen style.......1999-09-05
The book I read was published in 1986 and I have not been able to find another copy.
Sweet.......1999-03-18
I actually read Sandition. The first 11 chapters were written by Austen, but she died before completing it. The version I read was finished by "Another Lady." She remained faithful to Austen in all senses. The turn of events were really quite amusing.
