The Wisdom of the Hive: The Social Physiology of Honey Bee Colonies
ASIN: 0521429099 |
Book Description
Describes the prominent themes in the ecology, natural history, and evolution of bees, and includes discussions on pollinating behavior, natural enemies, reproduction, social behavior, and maintenance of the diversity of tropical communities. This book is the first to draw together these themes, and covers topics as varied as the evolution of obligate sociality and the reproductive diversity of tropical flowering plants. There are many new examples from the author's research on pollination ecology, mimicry, mutualism, coevolution, and competition.

Good book........1999-11-05
I had a copy of this book that I bought when it first came out, but somebody around my office liked it so much that they have yet to tire of it and return it to the shelf.
The information is highly useful to us now, especially since we are looking at bees in the Amazon as indicators of total biodiversity. The photographs are sufficient to dive right into generic identifications and the plant-bee associations are a big help.
David Roubik has written a classic. (A classic is defined here as a book that must be repurchased when your first copy turns up missing.) Every entomology department should have at least one copy. (The Goeldi Museu's entomolgy department will soon have two.)

Book Description
This book presents a detailed account of one of the most mysterious problems in science whether ordinary magnetic fields can exert an appreciable influence on chemical and biochemical reactions. The first aim of the book is to introduce this research, through theoretical and dynamic spin chemistry, to graduate students and researchers, by means of detailed theoretical and experimental descriptions. The second aim is to review typical recent investigations, which will stimulate new interest and applications in the 21st century. Because dynamic spin chemistry is based on established science, it is expected to provide a guide for all situations in which radicals, radical pairs, and higher spin species occur, including the effects of environmental electromagnetic fields on the human body.

Book Description
This book on multimedia tools for communicating mathematics arose from presentations at an international workshop organized by the Centro de Matemática e Aplicacoes Fundamentais at the University of Lisbon, in November 2000, with the collaboration of the Sonderforschungsbereich 288 at the University of Technology in Berlin, and of the Centre for Experimental and Constructive Mathematics at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada. The MTCM2000 meeting aimed at the scientific methods and algorithms at work inside multimedia tools, and it provided an overview of the range of present multimedia projects, of their limitations and the underlying mathematical problems.
This book presents some of the tools and algorithms currently being used to create new ways of making enhanced interactive presentations and multimedia courses. It is an invaluable and up-to-date reference book on multimedia tools presently available for mathematics and related subjects.

Sure, you may know the story of The Emperor's New Clothes. But have you ever heard it from the point of view of the Emperor's underwear? Or from the Imperial Mirror? Or the honest boy's mother? An all-star cast retells and illustrates Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale about the foolish king who is too vain to admit he can't see his sumptuous new clothes, which, according to the dastardly weavers, can only be seen by "visionaries gifted with true taste and imagination." Twenty-three celebrities and 23 acclaimed illustrators donated their time and creativity to this project sponsored by the Starbright Foundation, which develops products and programs that enable seriously ill children to confront the mental and emotional challenges beyond their medical conditions. From Madonna to General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, from Robin Williams to Dr. Ruth Westheimer, these well-known personalities each take on a different perspective of the fairy tale, creating a riotous retelling that will have everyone in the family bent double with laughter (Calvin Klein himself tells the royal underwear's version of the story!). But that's not all. Award-winning artists like William Joyce (who did the cover), Chris Van Allsburg, Kinuko Y. Craft, Maurice Sendak, Quentin Blake, and S. Saelig Gallagher lend their imaginative skill to each chapter, depicting two dozen fabulous and unusual angles to the story. Winner of a 1999 Hans Christian Andersen Award, this amusing version of a classic will keep readers in stitches, as it were. The accompanying CD of this new paperback edition brings the story to vivid life. (Ages 8 to 108) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Now available in a deluxe, affordable paperback and compact disc package comes the hip, hilarious retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale reimagined by an all-star cast. Each celebrity has created a character with a uniquely recognizable celebrity personality. And each character is lavishly illustrated by an acclaimed artist. The accompanying compact disc brings the story to life with music, sound effects, and all the humor and dramatic flair of the celebrity authors' finest performances-in a one-of-a-kind audio event for the entire family. And all this talent is for a unique charity-the Starbright Foundation. Royalties are donated to support this foundation dedicated to improving the lives of seriously ill children. The Starbright Foundation is working to change the face of childhood illness. By recognizing the link between a child's state of mind and the ability to recover from illness, Starbright creates products and programs that enable seriously ill children to confront the challenges they face every day. Starbright projects do more than educate or simply entertain, they address the core issues that accompany serious illness-the pain, fear, loneliness, and depression that can be as damaging as the sickness itself. The Starbright Foundation is best known for Starbright World, a private computer network connecting children from hospitals across the nation. Through this and other innovative combinations of technology, medicine, and entertainment, Starbright ensures that no child need sacrifice quality of life to an illness. For more information about the Starbright Foundation, please call (800) 315-2580 or visit the Starbright Web site at http://www.starbright.org.

Innovative, Funny, and Magically Illustrated.......2006-07-12
I am buying this book again because the first one I bought years ago is worn out from being loved and enjoyed by my oldest grandchild. Now that my youngest grandchildren are seven and eight, it's time to introduce it to them.
It probably is too sophisticated for younger children, but anyone from seven years and up will enjoy it tremendously. The illustrations pop off the page and, on the CD, the actors emote to fairy tale perfection. The fact that it raises money for a good cause is icing on the cake!
Star-Spangled Spectacular.......2001-10-27
This book is wonderful!!! I purchased this a little while ago and I love to listen to it. It has Beautiful illustrations by major illustrators including: Steven Kellogg, Tomie dePaola, and Graeme Base. Plus, if you get the CD with it, you get to hear Stars like Robin Williams (Jester), Johnathan Taylor Thomas (Prince), Melissa Joan Hart (Princess) and the Narrator, Jay Leno, read their own words. Spielberg did a great job giving actors parts that match their personalities like Fran Dresher as the Heralding Horn, Angela Lansbury as the Spinning Wheel, and Madona as the Empress. This is a great rewriting of a traditional story. The one thing that I didn't like was that the CD isn't broken up into sections so you can't just skip ahead to your favorite actor's part. But that doesn't really matter because the whole thing is great.
A great boy's book!.......2000-11-17
I have three boys 10,7,and 6. They absolutely loved this book, especially my 7 year old! He must have listened to it 50 times in 2 weeks. We read a lot of books and I have never heard him laugh out loud like he did for this book. He has talked about it ever since he first read it. This version adds humor and wit to an old classic without ruining the story line. The story is told from the perspective of the people and objects involved in it. This is a fabulous way to tell the story! The wonderful artwork and change of voices on each page holds the attention of younger children all the way through this rather long book. The kids enjoyed looking at the pictures and retelling the story themselves without listening to the CD as well. The only problem we had with this was the fact that the CD couldn't jump to the page we left off on. We always had to start the story over. The kids never seemed to mind it - just me!
Delightful Attempt that misses the point........1999-09-24
I enjoyed this book and the accompanying CD very much. It is appropriate for the 8-12 year old set as well as for adults. My only problem was that the moral of the story was misconstrued. The moral of this story is that we should have the courage to challenge the status quo. While the moral of the original is to point out the outrageously foolish lengths that people will go in support of leaders (Royalty or Presidents). Irreverence and attacks on the status quo were interesting when they were unusual. The generation of Hollywood stars who so amusingly narrate this story appear cut of the same 1960's cloth and use this format to promote their ideas of the proper role of the individual in society. All In all this is a good book/CD package and I recommend it.
The best and most fun book I have ever read to my sons........1999-08-31
This book is absolutely wonderful. My sons, ages 7 & 11, enjoyed this book more than any other we have read together. It had us laughing out loud. The illustrations are far better than any I've seen. We checked it out of our local library. We have purchased it since. It is a must for any family library.
Book Description
Once upon a time there lived an Emperor with a passion for fashion....
In this bold, hilarious audiobook, Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale is given star treatment. The celebrity cast includes renowned actors and actresses, and many other highly acclaimed personalities whose talents are outshined only by their generosity.
This remarkable group of contributors has donated all of the royalties from this audiobook to Starbright, an innovative charitable organization committed to improving the lives of seriously ill children. Their gift to the Starbright Foundation is a gift for every listener, a brilliantly reinvented classic that will delight children of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Helped my son to read.......2002-01-20
I had been given 2 of these books from a friend and I decided to see if there were anymore. My son loves this book. He's now working on reading the adult side. It's a great idea to have a page each, 1 for the adult and 1 for the child. We have several of these books now and I see my son sitting down and reading them on his own.
A delightful gem.......2000-04-05
Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.
Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.
The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.
Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.
If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.
A Wonderful Way To Read With Your Child.......1999-09-30
The format of this book and the others like them give a young reader a very enjoyable experience. The adult side helps to embellish the story but the children's side lets a new reader be part of the story not just a listener. Our first grader takes great pride in his part of the book and seems to have better comprehension. These are a great find.
Over rated. Too wordy and advanced for children under 15........1998-12-11
The book is nicely illustrated and the book quality is good. However, it is too advanced for children. It is over-rated I suspect due to the voices of the celebrities that are on the CD. Many pages are actually quite depressing and negative. I like more upbeat books even if there is a moral to be taught.
I really was pleased with it, and so was my little sister........1998-01-20
I read this book to my little sister, she is 9 and thought it was the funnist book she had ever heared of. She really liked the part were the emporer.... well I won't give the ending away. But, I hope you enjoy it.
