    Book Description

The bacterium Escherichia coli – E. coli for short – has long been the organism of choice for unraveling biochemical pathways, deciphering the genetic code, learning how DNA is replicated and read, and even for manufacturing proteins of commercial interest. For some thirty years, it also has been a model for studying the molecular biology of behavior. E. coli swims in a purposeful manner, propelled by long thin helical filaments, each driven at its base by a reversible rotary engine. As a microscopic organism immersed in an aqueous environment, it has mastered physical constraints utterly different from any that we know, devising sensors, comparators, and motors on the nanometer scale.

This cross-disciplinary monograph describes these feats in a manner accessible to scientists, engineers, and others not trained in microbiology who would like to learn more about living machines. It treats the history of the subject, the physiology, physics, biochemistry and genetics, largely from first principles. It is all about a small but remarkably sophisticated friend who lives in your gut.

    Topics discussed include:

How does E. coli move about?

How do cells decide whether life is getting better or worse?

What is the machinery that makes this behavior possible?

How is the construction of this machinery programmed?

    How does this machinery work?

    What remains to be discovered?

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A756913. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this study was to develop a tool for evaluating data quality when characterizing a potentially contaminated groundwater aquifer, and to provide a basis for developing a simulator to allow environmental managers and engineers to practice and learn about the site characterization process. Specifically, this study characterized the uncertainty, estimation block size, and cost for the various methods of determing the value of each geological, hydrological, and contaminant parameter necessary to characterize a site. Research entailed identifying site characterization objectives and identifying parameters necessary to obtain those objectives. Methods of estimating each parameter were identified, then research was performed to characterize each method. This research resulted in a list of site characterization objectives and matrices of process parameters, parameter estimation methods, method uncertainties, volumes, costs, applicable model boundary conditions, and references. Fifty transport, storage, and fate parameters were identified along with 85 different estimation methods. Of these methods, 61 were partially characterized and 24 were completely characterized (primarily pertaining to transport). Results were used to define the initial specifications for a site characterization simulator. Considering this research, more study is needed to characterize methods pertaining to storage (except equilibrium sorption) and all fate parameters.

From the author: PVC/PS blends are obtained through a reactive extrusion--polymerization method by the absorption of a solution of styrene monomer, initiator, and a crosslinking agent in commercial suspension-type porous polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles, forming a dry-blend with a relatively high monomer content. These PVC/styrene dryblends are reactively polymerized in a twin-screw extruder in the melt state. They do not contain monomer residues as detected by GC. The transparency, fracture surface morphology, thermal stability, rheology and static and dynamic mechanical properties of these blends are compared to physical PVC/PS blends at similar compositions. Owing to the high polymerization temperature (180[degrees]C), short PS chains are formed in the reactive extrusion process. These short chains are dispersed both as a separate phase of ~2 [micro]m particles (recognized by SEM) and also as molecularly dispersed chains enhancing plasticization and compatibilization. The molecularly dispersed short PS chains tend to plasticize the PVC phase, reducing its melt viscosity and glass transition temperature. The content of the short PS chains forming the dispersed separate PS particles is too low for DMTA to detect a separate [T.sub.g]. Thus, reactively extruded PVC/PS blends exhibit single [T.sub.g] transitions at lower temperatures compared with the neat PVC. Migration of the PVC's low-molecular-weight additives (lubricants and thermal stabilizer) to the PS phase is observed in the physical PVC/PS blends, causing antiplasticization of the PS phase. This results in both reduction of the [T.sub.g] and an increase in the thermal stability of the PS phase in the physical PVC/PS blends. Comparing TGA thermograms of reactively extruded and physical PVC/PS indicates that the PS formed in the extruder is different from the commercial PS. This can stem from various chemical reactions that can take place in the studied reactive polymerization process. Polym. Eng. Sci. 44:1473-1483, 2004. [c] 2004 Society of Plastics Engineers.

Nearly nine decades after his death, Mark Twain remains an international icon. His white-maned, mustachioed image is instantly identifiable throughout the world, the very picture of probity and high spirits (which explains why he's become the poster boy for products as diverse as beer, billiard tables, sewing machines, pizza, and real estate). Perhaps more importantly, Twain's books have retained all their power to amuse and enrage. How is it possible for the creator of a 19th-century "boy's holiday book" (Twain's own description of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) to raise so many contemporary hackles? The answer is that Twain is a contemporary writer. Not, of course, from a chronological point of view--he was born in Missouri in 1835 and died in 1910 (having insisted that "annihilation has no terrors for me"). But Twain was the first writer to elevate the American vernacular to a high art. Sidestepping the starched-shirt diction of his peers, he created an idiom that resembled (but did not precisely duplicate) the wayward, slangy, ungrammatical music of American conversation. No serious reader of Twain will want to do without the Oxford Mark Twain. This 29-volume leviathan includes not only the major works but also a treasure trove of essays and short pieces, many of them unavailable for decades. Throw in the introductions to each volume (by such heavyweights as Toni Morrison, Kurt Vonnegut, Cynthia Ozick, Gore Vidal, George Plimpton, Bobbie Ann Mason, and Walter Mosley), as well as the original illustrations, and you've got the book bargain of the millennium.

                      Book Description

A tongue-in-cheek travelogue following in the tradition of the immensely popular Innocents Abroad in which Twain and his mysterious traveling companion Mr. Harris make their way through Germany and across the Alps into Italy.

                      Download Description

"A Tramp Abroad" is truly one of the most humorous of classic American literature owing purely to its author Mark Twain. Twain was once quoted as saying "A classic is a book which people praise and don't read.", but it is truly not the case in A Tramp Abroad". This is a great read for people young and old. Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year.

                      3 out of 5 stars Meandering Twain.......2007-02-17

This is the story of Twain's expedition to Germany, Switzerland and Italy, in which he spends a lot of time rafting on rivers and climbing up and down mountains. Of course, he devotes plenty of space to anecdotes, stories and reflections on the national characteristics of the people he encounters (including lamentations on the state of German cooking). In among all this, he finds time to describe the places he visits.

It's a deliberately unfocused work, and therein lies its entertainment, It really cannot be treated as an authentic travel book, as Twain makes a lot up rather than describing what he actually sees. Therefore, it's a hit-and-miss affair, sometimes the humour comes off, at other times it's tiresome. The same goes for the stories Twain scatters around. I enjoyed "Innocents Abroad" far more than this book. This one was much more inconsistent in quality.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed after liking "The Innocents Abroad".......2006-12-27

I listened to the audio version of both books, and will admit up front that the narrator for this one is not one of my favorites, but I got past that after a while.
Twain seemed to be "padding" the narrative with an awful lot of folktales and legend, rather than his own experience. There's a lengthy (and highly annoying) "fantasy" sequence - I suppose he was trying for parody - as well. I found myself fast-forwarding through almost a full cassette of a gory description of two deuls (near the beginning); he delights in recounting grisly mountaineering stories later on during the novel. The storyline ended abruptly at the end of cassette 11 of 13; the last two were the appendix, which I skipped.
I really liked "Innocents" and am planning on purchasing "Following the Equator" (I looked through it at a bookstore and it seemed pretty interesting), but I wish I'd skipped this one. Three stars for the humor when he actually describes his own experiences.

5 out of 5 stars As an American living in Germany, this was a HILARIOUS read.......2006-08-18

It's fascinating to compare my own experiences, having lived now 3 years in Germany, to those of an American from 125 years earlier. I've been learning to speak German, and his Appendix on the "awful" German language was hilarious. In poking fun at German grammar (e.g., long sentences), he purposely commits the same errors in his own writing. The scene "riding" the glacier down the Alps was so funny I had tears running down my face. It's amazing to think that it was written in 1879, when America was barely a century old, and the insights and perceptions then can be incredibly, eerily similar to either my or "typical" American's attitudes today.

I'd recommend it to anyone, but particularly to anyone visiting or living in Europe. It's way funnier than his "Innocents Abroad", which is also a good read on travel in Europe.

4 out of 5 stars Mark Twain is our tramp abroad as he travel the Europe of 1880!.......2006-04-05

A Tramp Abroad is the third and least successful of the travel books written by the pen of Mark Twain.
In this book we follow Twain as he tours Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland. I found the early chapters chronicling his visit to Heidelburg University; hilarious visits to opera houses and tale tales such as the Blue Jay yarn to be well done.
The longest section of the book deals with Twain's alpine climbing adventures in Switzerland. This material is interesting but goes on a bit too long for the modern reader.
This is a fine book and deserves to be read and enjoyed by a wider readership that better known but lesser Twain novels and
                      travel writing,
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys listening to a great author recount his peregrinations through Europe in a leisurely and informative manner.
