Book Description
Headlines around the world about severe droughts, hurricanes, and floods caused by El Niño and La Niña appear every few years. El Niño is the second most important climate process after the changing seasons; its effects are widely known, but the equally serious impact of La Niña is only now beginning to be appreciated. Fully revised, Currents of Change clearly explains what El Niño and La Niña are and how they can be forecast. Examining for the first time the major El Niño of 1997-1998, Michael Glantz explains what we can learn from past events, how we can better manage climate-sensitive activities, and how to anticipate what future storms and droughts may occur. A century ago, it was of interest only to Peruvian fishermen and farmers. Today, scientists armed with tremendous computer models and satellites realize that El Niño and La Niña affect climatic conditions in seemingly remote parts of the world and are better able to predict which regions will be affected. Including the latest information about El Niño and La Niña, this new edition of Currents of Change will be useful to scientists, policymakers, economists, and interested readers alike. Michael Glantz is a Senior Scientist with the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the Environmental and Societal Impacts Group, a program of NCAR. He is the coordinator of a 16-country El Niño impacts and response strategies study for the United Nations. Glantz is a member of numerous national and international committees and advisory bodies and is a recipient of the 1987 World Hunger Media Award, of UNEP's Global 500 Award, and the 1991 Mitchell Prize for Sustainable Development. He is the author of Climate Variability, Climate Change, and Fisheries (Cambridge, 1992) and Drought Follows the Plow (Cambridge, 1994). He lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Currents of Change: El Niño's Impact on Climate and Society
Michael H. Glantz Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521576598 |
Book Description
Every year, extreme climatic problems occur around the globe, with droughts in some places and floods in others. Recently, we have come to recognise that some of these widely dispersed climatic extremes might have a common origin in the periodic warming of sea surface water in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. A century ago, Peruvian fishermen connected this appearance of warm water every December to changes in fish numbers and christened it ‘El Niño’, the Spanish term for the Christ Child. In some years, El Niño lingers, and seems to be connected with droughts in Australia, Brazil or India, reduced incidence of tropical hurricanes on the east coast of the US, and floods in Peru. Currents of Change explains in simple terms what El Niño is, how its effects might be forecast and its far reaching impacts on all of us.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
This monograph describes the basic physics of high-energy crystal channeling and introduces the nonspecialist to the application of bent-crystals at accelerators. It covers topics such as charged particle channeling in straight and bent crystals, particle trapping into the channeling mode, the effects of crystal lattice distortions, and computer simulations. It also deals with crystal bending methods and discusses experimental schemes and theoretical results. Particular consideration is given to the projects for crystal use at future large hadron colliders. The topics are treated in a textbook style with many figures. The book addresses students as well as the working physicists in high-energy physics laboratories.

Shaped Crystal Growth (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications)
V.A. Tatarchenko Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792324196 |
Book Description
This book is the first monograph that systematically describes macroscopic crystallization theory. The theory developed is based on the concept of stable growth and on the fundamental Lyapunov stability theory. The internal stabilising crystallization rate implies a more perfect crystal. The characteristic feature of the theory presented is its use in solving the practical problems that occur in the process of crystal growth. The theory is developed for the shaping mechanisms - Stepanov, Czochralski, Verneuil and floating-zone techniques.

Modelling with Ordinary Differential Equations
T.P. Dreyer Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0849386365 |
Book Description
Modelling with Ordinary Differential Equations integrates standard material from an elementary course on ordinary differential equations with the skills of mathematical modeling in a number of diverse real-world situations. Each situation highlights a different aspect of the theory or modeling. Carefully selected exercises and projects present excellent opportunities for tutorial sessions and self-study. This text/reference addresses common types of first order ordinary differential equations and the basic theory of linear second order equations with constant coefficients. It also explores the elementary theory of systems of differential equations, Laplace transforms, and numerical solutions. Theorems on the existence and uniqueness of solutions are a central feature. Topics such as curve fitting, time-delay equations, and phase plane diagrams are introduced. The book includes algorithms for computer programs as an integral part of the answer-finding process. Professionals and students in the social and biological sciences, as well as those in physics and mathematics will find this text/reference indispensable for self-study.

Use Your Computer.......2004-01-23
The book reflects this advance by offering algorithms and problems for students to crank up their computers on. No longer are they restricted to only the elegant problems, with analytic answers. Now, "grubby" numbers can be crunched to give insight into problems.
The book also aims at students in the biological and social sciences, who typically do not deal much in differential equations beyond a simple predator-prey problem.
The treatment should be straightforward to most students, who only need a prior course on introductory calculus.

Scientific Computing with Mathematica: Mathematical Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Addolorata Marasco , and Antonio Romano Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0817642056 |
Book Description
Many interesting behaviors of real physical, biological, economical, and chemical systems can be described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Scientific Computing with Mathematica® provides a general framework useful for the applications on the conceptual aspects of the theory of ODEs, as well as a sophisticated use of Mathematica® software for the solutions of problems related to ODEs. In particular, a chapter is devoted to the use of ODEs and Mathematica® in the dynamics of rigid bodies.
Mathematical methods and scientific computation are dealt with jointly to supply a unified presentation. The main problems of ODEs such as phase portrait, approximate solutions, periodic orbits, stability, bifurcation, and boundary problems are covered in an integrated fashion with numerous worked examples and computer program demonstrations using Mathematica®.
Topics and Features:
* Explanation of how to use the Mathematica® package ODE.m to support qualitative and quantitative problem solving
* End-of-chapter exercise sets incorporating the use of Mathematica® programs
* Detailed description of the mathematical procedures underlying the twenty-eight programs written in Mathematica®
* Appendix describing the use of ten notebooks to guide the reader through all the exercises.
This book is an essential text/reference for students, graduates and practitioners in engineering and applied mathematics interested in problems of ODEs in both the qualitative and quantitative description of solutions with the Mathematica® program. It is also suitable as a self-study resource for professionals and others seeking an understanding of how to use ODEs in modeling physical, biological, and economic phenomena.

Book Description
