Cell Surface Receptors: A Short Course on Theory and Methods
Lee E. Limbird Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387230696 |
Book Description
Cell Surface Receptors: A Short Course on Theory and Methods, 3rd Edition, links theoretical insights into drug-receptor interactions described in mathematical models with the experimental strategies to characterize the biological receptor of interest. The study of receptors has changed considerably over the period of the publication of the three editions of this book. The cloning of several genomes makes it unlikely that preparations of receptors now or in the future will arise from their purification as trace proteins from native tissues, but rather from a myriad of molecular approaches. Nonetheless, understanding the molecular mechanisms and ultimately the in vivo biology of these receptors means that investigators will engage in molecular, cellular and ultimate in vivo strategies. It should be of value to investigators who want to identify, characterize and understand the biology of a receptor of interest.

Nutritional Aspects of Bone Health
Manufacturer: Royal Society of Chemistry ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0854045856 |
Book Description
Nutritional Aspects of Bone Health provides an in-depth review of the role of diet in the development and maintenance of bone health throughout the lifecycle, and prevention of osteoporosis in later life. The book is multi-authored by the world's leading researchers in this area, who have come together to formulate the first ever textbook on nutritional aspects of bone health, and includes the current and cutting edge science underpinning the prevention of bone disease.
The book is structured such that, in the first section, an overview is provided on what is meant by the terms bone health and osteoporosis and includes key areas such as epidemiology, genetics and the impact of non-nutritional exogenous factors influencing the skeleton. The second section details the established nutritional factors affecting bone health, namely calcium and vitamin D. Section three focuses on the role of macronutrients and macrominerals in bone health, namely protein, phosphorus, sodium and potassium, including the criticality of acid-base homeostasis to skeletal integrity. Section four addresses the effects of microminerals, trace elements, vitamin K, vitamin A and isoflavones on bone. Section five focuses attention on key issues connected with the influence of diet and anorexia and bulimia on bone health including nutrition and bone growth; nutrient:gene interactions; nutrient:drug interactions; and the final section discusses the effect of diet on reduction of fracture risk; the cost-effectiveness of nutritional supplements; and nutritional strategies for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
The book is targeted at a number of key audiences. Whilst there is a focus on the academic research world and those principally involved in education, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the book will also be of considerable interest to those participating in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, namely those working in the medical and health promotion fields. Furthermore, Nutritional Aspects of Bone Health will be of particular interest to the food industry as the popularity of foods designed to target specific health issues increases, and nutritional therapy has a critical role to play in this major public health problem.

The Radon Transform (Progress in Mathematics)
Sigurdur Helgason Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0817641092 |
Book Description
The Radon transform is an important topic in integral geometry which deals with the problem of expressing a function on a manifold in terms of its integrals over certain submanifolds. Solutions to such problems have a wide range of applications, namely to partial differential equations, group representations, X-ray technology, nuclear magnetic resonance scanning, and tomography. This second edition, significantly expanded and updated, presents new material taking into account some of the progress made in the field since 1980.
The first chapter introduces the Radon transform and presents new material on the d-plane transform and applications to the wave equation. Chapter 2 places the Radon transform in a general framework of integral geometry known as a double fibration of a homogeneous space. Several significant examples are developed in detail. Two subsequent chapters treat some specific examples of generalized Radon transforms, for examples, antipodal manifold in compact 2-points homogeneous spaces, and orbital integrals in isotropic Lorentzian manifolds. A final chapter deals with Fourier transforms and distributions, developing all the tools needed in the work.
Aimed at beginning graduate students, this monograph will be useful in the classroom or as a resource for self-study. Readers will find here an accessible introduction to Radon transform theory, an elegant topic in integral geometry.

The Radon Transform, Inverse Problems, and Tomography (Proceedings of Symposia in Applied Mathematics)
Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0821839306 |
Product Description
Since their emergence in 1917, tomography and inverse problems remain active and important fields that combine pure and applied mathematics and provide strong interplay between diverse mathematical problems and applications. The applied side is best known for medical and scientific use, in particular, medical imaging, radiotherapy, and industrial non-destructive testing. Doctors use tomography to see the internal structure of the body or to find functional information, such as metabolic processes, noninvasively. Scientists discover defects in objects, the topography of the ocean floor, and geological information using X-rays, geophysical measurements, sonar, or other data. This volume, based on the lectures in the Short Course The Radon Transform and Applications to Inverse Problems at the American Mathematical Society meeting in Atlanta, GA, January 3-4, 2005, brings together articles on mathematical aspects of tomography and related inverse problems. The articles cover introductory material, theoretical problems, and practical issues in 3-D tomography, impedance imaging, local tomography, wavelet methods, regularization and approximate inverse, sampling, and emission tomography. All contributions are written for a general audience, and the authors have included references for further reading.

The Radon Transform and Local Tomography
Alexander G. Ramm , and Alex I. Katsevich Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849394929 |
Book Description
Over the past decade, the field of image processing has made tremendous advances. One type of image processing that is currently of particular interest is "tomographic imaging," a technique for computing the density function of a body, or discontinuity surfaces of this function. Today, tomography is widely used, and has applications in such fields as medicine, engineering, physics, geophysics, and security. The Radon Transform and Local Tomography clearly explains the theoretical, computational, and practical aspects of applied tomography. It includes sufficient background information to make it essentially self-contained for most readers.

Surprisingly Thorough. Fills a Need........2000-07-24
This book is the most useful source of such information I've found, so far. I judge it to be a bit challenging to advanced undergraduate students in mathematics and engineering. Graduate students should be able to handle it and may also feel that it extends them.
Four stars instead of five because some of the proofs reference papers apart from the book. It could be more readable, but it is quite good as it is.
I recommend it.

In the Land of Time: And Other Fantasy Tales (Penguin Classics)
Lord Dunsany Manufacturer: Penguin Classics ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 014243776X Release Date: 2004-02-24 |
Book Description
Lord Dunsany has gained a cult following for his influence on modern fantasy literature, including such authors as J. R. R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft. This unique collection of short stories ranges over five decades, including the entire Gods of Pegana and such notable works as "Idle Days on the Yann" as well as several about the garrulous traveler Joseph Jorkens and the outrageous murder tale "The Two Bottles of Relish." Throughout, the stories are united by Dunsany's cosmic vision, his impeccable and mellifluous prose, and his distinctively Irish sense of whimsy.Customer Reviews:

A rich collection of Dunsany's tales.......2004-05-03
Among the longish (none of Dunsany's stories is really long) is Dunsany's short novel "Gods of Pegana," a collection of Dunsany's invented myths for countries that never really existed, and the novella "Sword of Welleran," in which legends come to life, including the famed sword of a hero. Not to mention a vast variety of short stories ranging from murder mysteries ("Two Bottles of Relish") to Victorian character study ("Thirteen At Table"), from horror (the creepy "Ghosts") to whimsical fantasy ("The Wonderful Window," the centaur-themed "Bride of the Man-Horse").
One of the good things about "In The Land of Time" is that except for Dunsany's war stories and club tales, just about every kind of fiction he wrote is in here. Fantasy, horror, regular fiction and invented myths -- this guy wrote 'em all. And editor S.T. Joshi does a pretty good job pulling together some of the best things Dunsany wrote. The main problem is that the collection is kind of serious. Since Dunsany could be very funny in some stories, this is leaving a big gap in the collection.
Like the fantasy writers who came after him, Dunsany dipped into myths that weren't his own (like "Charon," a memorable short story about the ferryman of the dead). At the same time, he wove his own legends and myths about gods and heroes, in a vaguely Middle-Eastern setting. If you didn't know better, you could almost believe that these legends were really from some crumbled desert city. And his slightly formal, sparklingly lush language only adds to this feeling.
"In the Land of Time: And Other Fantasy Tales" is a solid collection that shows nearly all of Lord Dunsany's considerable writing range. Dunsany's brilliant fantasy is a must-read.
