    Book Description

The beautiful tropical dry forest of northwest Costa Rica, with its highly seasonal rainfall and diversely vegetated landscape, is disappearing even more rapidly than Costa Rica's better-known rain forest, primarily because it has been easier to convert to agriculture. This book, based on more than thirty years of study, offers the first comprehensive look at the ecology, biodiversity, and conservation status of this endangered and fragile region. The contributors, from Costa Rica, Britain, Mexico, and the United States, and representing the fields of ecology, environmental education, policy, and the law, examine the major plant and animal groups living in the dry forest and present the first technical evaluation of Costa Rica's conservation efforts.
As they assess the status of their area of specialty in the dry forest, the contributors also look beyond this particular region to show how its plants and animals are ecologically and evolutionarily connected to other geographic areas in Costa Rica and Central America. Their chapters cover topics such as watershed and coastal management, plant phenology, pollination, insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. They also consider the socioeconomic, policy, legal, and political aspects of biodiversity conservation, giving the volume a wide-ranging perspective and making a unique contribution to our knowledge of the tropical dry forest. The book concludes with an important synthesis of the contributors' recommendations on future directions, policies, and actions that will better conserve biodiversity in Costa Rica and other neotropical forests as well.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2007-07-11

Only the best will do - and this is it.

Mandatory reading for anyone involved in optics. Goodman's books are treasure troves.

4 out of 5 stars A very nice book , but nothing is ever perfect..........2005-10-07

Overall I like the book for it is clear, the mathematics is lucid and has all the essentials in a comprehensive way. I have found it quite useful for research. In addition, for the most parts it is quite accurate.

              Some criticisms though:
Contains everything from a more mathematical point of view. By that i mean, problems are usually not very physically motivated and some of the conclusions drawn are not very physical. that is you are given at the end of a discussion only an integral. It would have been nice if there were more discussions on the physics of Fourier Optics, for example pictures of actual experimental results or clear diagrams that show for example how does the diffraction pattern for a given input looks like. So getting an intuitive grasp of the subject at a pictorial level, where you can 'see' the results is a bit challenging to get out of this book. also very expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Goodman's Fourier Optics 3rd Edition: An Improved Classic........2005-08-12

For the last month, I have been using this book for self study to aid me in my work with lasers. Originally, I was working from the 1st edition (borrowed from a co-worker), but decided to buy my own copy. I wound up buying the 3rd edition, a significantly expanded version of the original.

Goodman's writing style is conversational and his treatment of the subject is thorough. I appreciate his inclusion of enough optics/E&M background within the text that I am not constantly having to go to my bookshelf to consult other references. Note, the 3rd edition has several helpful appendices not found in the 1st edition.

There are also many instructive problems given throughout the text to help students solidify their understanding of the material.

This is an excellent book for self study, and would certainly make a fine text for a senior undergrad course on the subject. I recommend it highly.

              Charlie.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the topic.......2005-07-14

This is the best book on Fourier Optics that I'm aware of. There is sufficient detail that you can follow the math, but also has well written text explaining concepts. The problems are sometimes trivial and sometime challenging, but they are very much an integral part of the book and doing them is necessary to get a full understanding of the material. There is a 3rd edition of the book with an additonal chapter, which is available at a much lower price, but Amazon does not seem to be carrying it yet. Hopefully they will soon. (...)

4 out of 5 stars A good path to physical optics and imaging theory.......2000-06-14

This book is cleary written. The basic theory of Fourier transform is included too. Fourier optics is a very strong tool in imaging and optics. I would say Goodman is an enginnering guy, but some physical insight is not very clear. Diffraction theory is easier to understand than J.D. Jackson's E&M. And the whole book is easier to read than Born and Wolf's Principle of Optics and has more details. After all, it is a good book for Fourier opitcs. But the price is too high.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Hecht.......2006-03-13

I used this book side-by-side with Hecht for a course entitled "Fourier Theory in Optics". I found Steward to be much more clear and readable, though at times less mathematically rigorous than Hecht. For someone who wants to learn what Fourier Optics is, I highly recommend this book. Steward starts from the absolute basics of Physical Optics and builds up to relatively advanced applications of Fourier series and transforms as they relate to Optics.
One particular thing which I found he stresses more than Hecht is the relationship between the Fourier transform of the aperture function and the diffraction pattern. I found Hecht to be very unclear about this to the extent that you could read many pages of his description of Fourier series' and transforms and still have no idea what it has to do with Optics.
However, I must add that Hecht goes into more depth in subjects like the calculation of the MTF and convolution.
In short, this is the best book I am aware of for learning Fourier optics from scratch but as the name indicates it is an introduction, albeit a rather comprehensive one.

4 out of 5 stars good introduction to Fourier transforms and optics.......1998-01-22

This book is a good introduction to the theory of Fourier series, transforms, and optics. It assumes no previous knowledge of Fourier theory. Topics covered include the basics of Fourier series and transforms, the convolution theorem, coherent and incoherent imaging, and diffraction. Several example applications are treated as well, such as the theory of simple stellar and spectral interferometers.

Despite covering all of these topics, this is a short book (185 pages). The writing is clear but not overly mathematical. The book is a good general introduction for a scientist of engineering interested in Fourier optics, but it will not substitute for a more technical and rigorous treatment.

              Book Description

This introductory textbook presents the modern signal processing concepts used in computer vision and image analysis in a systematic and mathematically coherent way. For the first time in a textbook on image processing, single direction, group direction, corners and edges, Hough transform, and motion estimation are developed in a principled way using direction tensors as the unifying concept. The topics presented include Hilbert spaces, the Fourier transform, scale analysis, direction fields, structure tensors, motion tensors, the Hough transform, grouping, and segmentation. Directional signal processing, an increasingly crucial element of computer vision for which neural circuits exist in human vision, is dealt with in depth by use of tensors. All chapters are richly illustrated, with color graphics from cover to cover; applications are studied in various fields, including biometric person authentication, texture analysis, optical character recognition, and motion estimation and tracking; and exercises help the sudent verify progress. Developed out of courses given by the author, this introductory textbook addresses advanced undergarduates as well as master and PhD students in computer science, engineering, mathematics, and in other disciplines where techniques from computer vision, image processing, visual computation and signal analysis are applied.

4 out of 5 stars strong maths treatment.......2007-08-12

Bigun's book is an excellent way to delve into the intricacies of image analysis. The treatment is strongly mathematical. Involving the defining of Hilbert spaces and of operators within these spaces. Along with the use of tensors and minimising of residuals. The text starts from scratch, by considering an image and the RGB and HSV methods of representing that image. But the maths rapidly becomes quite sophisticated.

There is a definite connection with traditional statistical analysis of non-images. Concepts like power spectrum and regression analysis are common to both treatments. The book also has a good treatment of curvilinear coordinates. Well suited to studying images like those given in several of the text's examples.

The book only lightly touches on facial analysis. This is an entire subject of its own. There is a brief mention of eigenfaces, but you should turn to other texts devoted to studying faces, if that is your interest.

Fourier Series and Optical Transform Techniques in Contemporary Optics

                An Introduction

For anyone new to Fourier methods, this remarkable book will illuminate the subject like no other currently available. With over 280 illustrations generated by computer graphics, it depicts in 3-space (rather than the usual 2-space) the many basic functions of optical diffraction and imaging. These mind-stretching visualizations give the reader an enhanced understanding of both Fourier transform techniques and key principles in optics. At the same time, the author provides a lucid text that covers wave notation, the Fourier analysis of signals, the processing of light in diffraction phenomena and imaging, Zernicke polynomials, Fourier transforms for Fresnel diffraction, laser beacon adaptive optics, and related topics.

Ideal for self-teaching, this book is highly recommended for working engineers, technical staff, students of physical optics and signal analysis, and Fourier novices in all fields.

                            Book Description

Anthony Hope's swashbuckling romance transports his English gentleman hero, Rudolf Rassendyll, from a comfortable life in London to fast-moving adventures in Ruritania, a mythical land steeped in political intrigue. Rassendyll bears a striking resemblance to Rudolf Elphberg who is about to be crowned King of Ruritania. When the rival to throne, Black Michael of Strelsau, attempts to seize power by imprisoning Elphberg in the Castle of Zenda, Rassendyll is obliged to impersonate the King to uphold the rightful sovereignty and ensure political stability. Rassendyll endures a trial of strength in his encounters with the notorious Rupert of Hentzau, and a test of a different sort as he grows to love the Princess Flavia. Five times filmed, The Prisioner of Zenda has been deservedly popular as a classic of romance and adventure since its publication in 1894.

5 out of 5 stars The Prisoner of Zenda.......2007-05-08

This book is the basis of the movie. The story of a happily apathetic Englishman, descended of a scandalous affair between one of his ancestors and a member of the Ruritanian Royal Family, who decides on a whim to visit Ruritania to see the coronation of their King. The king and our hero turn out to be as like as a set of twins, which comes in handy when the king is kidnapped by his evil half brother and the fate of Ruritania lies in jeopardy. Throw in a beautiful princess, the dashing villain Rupert of Hentzau, and plenty of intrigue and you have one of the great adventure stories. FYI the book is written in the first person, which gets you more personally tied up in the action/emotion. It was a great read. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventure stories.

                            4 out of 5 stars Zenda-A Classic Romance.......2007-03-09

The Prisoner of Zenda is a fast-paced adventure romance that rewards the reader with clearly defined characters and moral values. If you want a story that leaves you feeling good at the end, this is a good one to read. The language is a bit archaic at times and some of the dialogue is stilted. But these failings do not materially interfere with enjoying the book.

                            4 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, well-written, light adventure novels.......2006-09-27

This is a quick review of the Penguin edition, which contains both the classic original novel and its sequel. Both are good reads though quite different. Personally, I preferred the darker and more dramatic sequel; in "Zenda" everything just kind of works itself out and I thought it was just a tad campy.

Well, they're light adventure novels set in the mid-19th century or thereabouts. Not sure where exactly the fictitious kingdom of Ruritania is supposed to be, but I would guess in the neighborhood of Austria or Hungary. The novels feature swordplay, gunfights, romance, and plenty of plot twists (especially the sequel). Very well penned, written in a direct style with outstanding word choice.

In both novels, Rudolf Rassendyl gets himself neck-deep in Ruritanian politics despite the fact that he's a foreigner and total stranger to the people. What enables this is that he's a spitting image of the king, also named Rudolf. This remarkable coincidence is at the heart of the plots of both novels.

It's interesting comparing these novels with "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Dumas, which I'm now reading. "Count" is deeper, more descriptive, paced much slower, and requires more thought. Well, in my book, those elements are part of what it takes to make a five-star novel. "Zenda" and "Rupert" are too on the light side to hit the top of my scale. But I still enjoyed them and recommend them to those looking for a fast-paced yarn set in bygone times.

I finished this book on a flight to Bulgaria a month ago and just left it in the seat pocket. I hope someone found it and is enjoying it now!

5 out of 5 stars Who names their kid "Rudolf," anyway?.......2005-10-06

A good swashbuckling novel is indispensable. Fencing, fighting, swimming across moats, humor, true love, red hair... and of course, there's a sad ending, so we've got all the essential elements of good literature here.

5 out of 5 stars The book that started it all for me!!!.......2005-08-17

I have been an avaricious reader since I was in the second grade; a bout of mononucleosis and the discovery of the Hardy boys in the third grade sealed the deal for me, and I have been reading furiously ever since. This book, perhaps more than any other I had read in those formative years, thrilled me to my bones and forged me into a lifelong committed adventure reader. They say you never forget your first love, and I have never forgotten the Prisoner of Zenda. It has EVERYTHING a young boy could desire in an adventure book: travel to a distant country, nefarious villains, royalty, beautiful damsels, dashing military officers accoutered with flashing sabers and charging steeds, castles, kidnappings, escapes, swashbuckling....my knees buckle a little bit just thinking about it again. This book literally imprinted me for everything I have read in the genre since then and stirred in me a desire for travel and adventure that has led me all around the globe several times in my life. I do not think it is a stretch to say that this book may very well have changed the course of my life, nudging me into certain dreams and hopes that I have happily chased ever since. I've ordered it today, desiring to read it again and compare it to my 8 year old memories of it, but, more importantly, I also wish to present it to my son and hope it opens the world to him the same way it did for me.
