    Book Description

    Choice Outstanding Title! (January 2006)

The image of Antarctica as a symbol of the last great wilderness and pristine environment has changed considerably in the last two decades. Environmental problems such as the ozone hole and the break-up of ice-shelves have shown that Antarctica is inextricably linked to global processes and exposed to the impact of human activities in the rest of the world. This volume provides an overview of climate change data, its effects on the structure and functioning of Antarctic ecosystems, and the occurrence and cycling of persistent contaminants. It discusses the unique physico-chemical characteristics of the Antarctic environment, ecophysiological adaptations of terrestrial and marine organisms, the transfer of contaminants in pelagic and neritic food chains and the possible consequences for animals at higher trophic levels. The text concludes with possible future scenarios of climate change and atmospheric contamination and the role of Antarctic organisms in the early detection of environmental perturbations.

      Book Description

The book covers in detail a range of future-oriented developements in the field of high and extra-high voltage cables. These include cross-linked polyethylene-insulated cables for up to 525 kV to supersede conventional oil/paper-insulated cables, power cables with high-temperature superconductor for underground transmission of substantial volumes of energy, and gas-insulated tubular conductors as a possible alternative for overhead lines. In addition to these innovative technologies the book also of course describes the designs of all today's customary high and extra-high voltage cables, includes, including oil/paper-insulated and gas-filled types, and the components required to keep the systems working. The book provides information on cable characteristics, cable construction, materials and manufacturing technology, quality assurance, developement and dimensioning of cables, and also on scope and restrictions in the forecasting of service life with solid insulants. It is intended for engineers and technicians from power supply corporations and the cable industry, and, with its wealth of fundamental information, is ideal too for teachers and students of electrical engineering.

A very useful book that gathers all the mathmatical formals 'as the title states. As an Engineering Student it is very helpful to have everything in one text instead of getting your old books and digging through them to find them.

As a tabular summary of many useful mathematical relations, the book is very job-specific; however, it contains most of the functions and functional relations that a scientist or engineer might need. The layout is clean and very well organized. It's a useful reference, but does not actually derive anything, so if one is looking for derivations, then try looking at applied mathematics textbooks.

        Book Description

This book is based on an undergraduate course taught at the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute (Utah) on linear and nonlinear waves. The first part of the text overviews the concept of a wave, describes one-dimensional waves using functions of two variables, provides an introduction to partial differential equations, and discusses computer-aided visualization techniques.

The second part of the book discusses traveling waves, leading to a description of solitary waves and soliton solutions of the Klein-Gordon and Korteweg-deVries equations. The wave equation is derived to model the small vibrations of a taut string, and solutions are constructed via d'Alembert's formula and Fourier series.

The last part of the book discusses waves arising from conservation laws. After deriving and discussing the scalar conservation law, its solution is described using the method of characteristics, leading to the formation of shock and rarefaction waves. Applications of these concepts are then given for models of traffic flow.

        Book Description

This textbook provides a solid foundation to a number of important topics in mathematics of interest to science and engineering students. Included are tensor algebra, ordinary differential equations, contour integration, Laplace and Fourier transforms, partial differential equations and the calculus of variations. The authors' approach is simple and direct with an emphasis on the analytical understanding of the material. The text is virtually selfcontained, assuming only that the student has a solid understanding of ancillary mathematics. Each chapter contains a large number of worked examples, and concludes with problems for solution, with answers in the back of the book.

        5 out of 5 stars A great reference book.......2000-01-04

This is not a book about advanced mathematics for mathematicians, but rather (as the title says) a book about advanced mathematical methods for practicing engineers, scientists, and students.

The number of subjects covered is truly impressive in such a relatively short book (only about 250 pages). Because of its brevity, though, I'd not recommend this book as a first course in mathematics for engineers and scientists (though the authors suggest it might be used that way). For a first course, I'd recommend a more complete text such as the one I used as an undergraduate (C. Ray Wylie, "Advanced Engineering Mathematics," McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1975). Although Stephenson and Radmore actually cover more material, Wylie's book has roughly twice as many pages, with more mathematical rigor and much more detail.

Although I don't recommend Stephenson and Radmore as a first text on the subject, I think it makes an excellent reference book, and would be a useful text as part of a refresher course taken by graduate students. This is a concise text that brings to your finger tips a broad assortment of valuable mathematical knowledge. The information is arranged (for the most part) so that it is easy to find, and easy to discern the important summary points.

The book has 9 chapters. The first chapter is a nice review of tensor algebra. The authors do a good job of dealing with the tensor notation without being too cryptic (something other books on tensor algebra fail to do). Chapter 2 deals with special functions, including gamma and Bessel functions. This is a pretty easy chapter, and is arranged in a particularly useful manner for a reference text.

Chapters 3 and 4 deal with non-linear ordinary differential equations. As with the other chapters in this book, there is relatively little development along the lines of mathematical proofs. Many of the methods are simply explained without the benefit of deeper understanding about why and how the methods work. This is fine (as I said) for a reference book. In fact, it is preferable. But, it is one of the reasons I'd not recommend this book for a first course (though it would make a great textbook for a graduate course with students already familiar with much of the material).

One of the things I truly enjoyed about this book is the number of worked examples. The authors typically present a concept or method, and then work through several examples that illustrate how the method or concept works. On the negative side, however, few of the worked examples deal with actual physical problems. While this is not always necessary, it would have been nice in a book that is targeted for engineering and science students.

Chapters 5 and 6 deal with calculus in the complex plane, specifically contour integration. As with the other chapters, these chapters are relatively brief (only about 60 pages together) but jam-packed with all sorts of useful information. This is one of the best summaries of contour integration that I've seen. Virtually all the pertinent information that engineering or science students would need on the subject is found here, along with applicable worked examples to emphasize key principles and ideas.

Chapter 7 deals with the Laplace and Fourier transforms, with almost all the emphasis on Laplace transforms. The authors develop ideas that are general, and based on the idea of an integral transform using an arbitrary kernel. They then introduce the Laplace kernel and develop a number of key theorems, along with worked examples, around the Laplace kernel. They finish the chapter with a brief summary of how the ideas based on the Laplace transform apply also to the Fourier transform.

Chapter 8 deals with partial differential equations. I found this chapter to be among the most abbreviated. Entire books have been written on the subject, but this chapter is only 28 pages long. Although the authors present many famous partial differential equations from science and engineering, they really do not develop the ideas with those in mind. This chapter is possibly more mathematically abstract than most students of engineering and physical sciences would prefer, but still an excellent source of summary information on the subject.

My favorite was chapter 9. This chapter is a great little summary of the calculus of variations. There is an interesting derivation of Euler's equation, and several worked examples that I liked. The authors also introduce the Lagrangian in this chapter, and offer two examples (a swinging pendulum and spring-coupled weights) showing how the Lagrangian is used to derive the equations of motion for dynamic systems. Note again, however, the abbreviated style. Stephenson and Radmore introduce the Lagrangian and give examples using only three pages. By contrast, my copy of Bradbury (T. C. Bradbury, "Theoretical Mechanics," Wiley, 1968) devotes significant parts of several chapters to the subject.

In summary, this is an excellent reference text for individuals already familiar (or at least somewhat familiar) with the information. It's an excellent text for reviewing the information as a book read cover to cover, or for finding the solution to a mathematical problem in a pinch. The material is condensed but accurate and nicely organized. It also has problems at the end of each chapter, with the answers in the back for the self-directed student. My only real complaint is that the index is rather brief.

Overall, though, this is a great book. If you are a student of engineering or science, and if you work with mathematics, you really should have this book in your library. Keep in mind, though, that this is a book on mathematics. There are hundreds of equations in this book, and some pages where few words in English appear.

This may be one of Du Maurier's best books and is not as well knows as some others. I found it an easy gentle read without an insult to intelligence. I am not a romance reader and generally prefer history and non-fiction books. However, I read this book several years ago and was captivated. I still remember the gentle yet bitter/sweet feelings from reading this book. When I meet people who enjoy reading romance, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top Ten!.......2007-03-20

I love this little tale of escapism! How often does a woman discovers both herself and her true love, ibidem (Latin: in the same place) ? At Middle age, almost 30, Lady Dona St Columb is in crisis and "becomes a boy" off the Cornwall English shore and lives, loves, and pillages ID, EGO, SUPEREGO only to discover life and it's sacrifices can be as or more adventuresome as the Frenchman's. This romantic sojourn is reflective of DuMaurier's struggle as she patiently waits for her husband during his Military Service years. Ladies and Gents, haven't we ALL answered this Freudian question when we discover our own crossroads between the Sparkled Bells and Whistle's love and the comfortable, enduring love of the friend that we vowed to spend our lives with? Dona choosing Harry, her son and dogs, is not sad or unendurable, because she knows who Dona is now. And, the handsome scoundrel, Jean is the better for having loved her.
THE FRENCHMAN'S CREEK, set in 17th-century Cornwall, England, is an absorbing tale. Passionate, bored Lady St. Columb flees her lover and her fashionable life at Court to the peace of her husband's Cornwall estate. Quite unexpectedly, she stumbles on the mooring place of the white-sailed ship belonging to the daring Frenchman who plunders the shores of Cornwall. This Frenchman is dangerous, wanted, charming, urbane, and handsome. He is also her doppelganger daring her, Dona, to discover herself and in loving Jean, she'll love the true Dona St Columb. It is only a question of time before this philosopher-pirate captures the heart of the lovely Lady St. Columb. Satisfying, and romantic from cover to cover.
As in REBECCA and JAMAICA INN, DuMaurier introduces to the reader her most beloved character: the beautiful landscape of Cornwall in the first chapter. Other reviewers have said to skip it or read after finishing the book, but the chapter is as important as DuMaurier's "Last time I saw Manderley..." While this leading lady may not be perceived as 'dark' as the ladies in REBECCA or JAMAICA INN, the fact that Lady St Columb is a bored adulteress who becomes 'boy' on a scoundrel's ship is. Such scandalous behavior, especially set in 17th Century England had never been portrayed as DuMaurier has.
To me, FRENCHMAN'S CREEK reads as wonderful swashbuckling movie starring Errol Flynn and Loretta Young. How can a girl resist a hansome scoundral who still has some honor about him and understand's emotional and intellectual intimacy is everything to a woman?

            5 out of 5 stars Desperate 18th century Housewife.......2006-04-25

Having read most of Ms. DuMaurier's books, this is the one I read over and over because I can identify personally with her reckless, unfulfilled antiheroine. Set in DuMaurier's beloved Cornwall, this is the tale of a beautiful, infamous English woman, Dona St. Columb who has married a wealthy drunk for all the wrong reasons and regretted it ever since. Lately she has been acting out in very antisocial ways with her husband's dissolute best friend and is very disgusted with herself and her marriage. Nearing her 30th birthday (old for back then), she flees London with her children for the family home on the ocean for the summer. In a rather genuine touch, she really loves her young sweet son (which proves her undoing) but doesn't like her prissy daughter very much.

Soon after her arrival, Dona discovers that her summer home has been commandered by a French pirate holed up in the estuary on her property and the mysterious new butler is his devoted manservant. Dona meets and falls deeply in love with his master, Jean Baptiste Aubrey, a fisherman, an artist and a thief because he is her doppleganger and the antithesis of her husband.

The story is pure escapism-I love it when The Frenchman slowly unscrews the ruby earring in her left ear. Eventually the spoiled Dona exhibits character growth and is forced to make hard choices. What would I do, flee with the pirate to Brittany or stay and be a better wife and mother? Sadly, I, too, know what the right answer is for a mother.

DuMaurier's heroines always are always dark ladies who stand by their often murderous but always charismatic men. The young Mrs. DeWinter in Rebecca realizes that her new husband is a murderer yet she supports him and continues to love and help him. The King's General has the inexplicable Honor, a spoiled heroine who is intentionally crippled by her would be sister-in-law and deprived of marriage. Yet Honore continues to love her philandering, cruel military man and even understands why he would allow his traitorous son to kill himself in a particularly cruel and haunting way.

Male readers probably won't like this book with the cuckold husband, the best friend hitting on the wife, and the heroine's lies and deceit and murderous rages. I don't blame them, so don't read it guys! This is a charmingly written chick story that can give hope to an unhappily married woman and is a great fantasy for a happily wed one.

4 out of 5 stars A Creatively Twisted Love Story.......2004-04-05

I enjoyed this a great deal because it was not the typical historical romantic novel. Although this took place in the 17th century I believe that some in the modern world could relate to Lady St. Columb. It is as though she is having mid-life crises even though she is only near thirty. She has fallen out of love with her husband and is bored with her life in London. She decides that she needs time away from both her husband and London society, so she gathers her children and heads to the family estate in Cornwall. There she finds the peace and quite she has been longing for as well as an adventurous pirate. She and the pirate are instantly attracted to each other. He is everything that she longs for in her life offering her friendship, reckless adventure, fantasy and is without responsibilities. She is torn with having to making decisions with which she will have to live for ever.

The story was wonderfully written. I found it hard to feel sorry for Dona because her character is very selfish, thinking only of herself. I felt a bit of compassion for her husband; he was completely clueless to the things that went on around him. The attraction between Dona and The Frenchman was largely based on mental attraction and the love for adventure, which helped ease the disappointment that it lacked lust. It leaves you wondering about physical and truly emotional attraction between Dona and the Frenchman, especially if you are accustomed to reading romance novels. The fact that it deals with adultery makes for an emotional read. I found myself feeling tugged in different directions, wanting her to be with pirate and keeping her family together. It is some what sad that she feels trapped and unhappy with her life. I would only recommend this novel to someone who enjoyed adventure with a bit of romance, but if you are a true lover of romance this book may leave you a little disappointed.

            5 out of 5 stars A Fun Escape.......2004-02-28

Daphne Du Maurier is a talented storyteller. Her word usage is amazing. The plot of the story is okay, but the way the story is told is magical. Hint: The first few pages of the book also serve as the ending.

            5 out of 5 stars Horribly Romantic.......2003-05-21

My tastes in books and music vary wildly, but this book has been a favorite since I first read it at 13 (20-ish years ago.) The pirate is a perfect symbol for the "lawlessness" of love; love does not follow rules and boundaries imposed upon it by our social conventions. It is primal and magic, and creeps silently and unexpectedly up to our shorelines in the dead of night.
