Book Description
Today, so much of our environment consists of nature in an altered state, from cultivated landscapes, and processed and prefabricated materials, to simulated and artificial environments. With this in mind, the Architectural League posed the question: can architects achieve design excellence without addressing nature? The choices and ramifications of designing in the new millenium are the basis of the projects envisioned by six of America's most exciting new architecture talents, and presented in Second Nature. Whether for a city or landscape, or for rural or urban clients, each of the winning designers presents provocative and innovative designs, establishing their place in the 21st century. Through collages, drawings, computer renderings, photographs, and text, the participants explain their understanding of how good design both respects and enhances the environment. Winners in this year's competition include Cho Slade Architecture, Julia Czerniak, Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha, Rhett Russo, Terry Surjan and SYSTEMarchitects. With over 150 images of the exhibition highlights, this book presents the best of the best.
Book Description
Process is integral to every clay piece, and this volume follows the logic of the steps of creation. The beginning chapters explain the early steps such as clay preparation and the various techniques of making. Following chapters are devoted to the later steps of drying and firing. Also included are numerous glaze and clay recipes, using a range of widely available materials. Complex and large-scale work, always demanding special attention and specialized knowledge, is comprehensively covered.
The European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) is an international studio dedicated to the ceramic arts, in all of their various forms. Drawn from the resources at the EKWC, this volume elucidates every aspect of the ceramic process, from wedging clay to packing kilns. This useful resource will be valuable to potters of every skill level. Extensively and vividly illustrated, the book demonstrates complicated techniques visually. In addition to the helpful diagrams, works produced at EKWC are used as examples of the methods described in the text, offering specific uses for procedures.
The Ceramic Process emphasizes the experimentation with materials and technique that is crucial to a potter's development and success. Ultimately, the reader will gain an understanding of every aspect--artistic as well as technical--of the creation of ceramic pieces.

Ceramic Process.......2007-03-08
This is not about the book, but about Amazon. Initially, the book arrived printed upside down in the binding and
with it cut badly with the tops of the pages missing. Following an email, Amazon reversed the charges and sent a new book which arrived in good condition. I would give Amazon high marks for addressing this problem.
The book itself is excellent.
Best buy for those serious about clay.......2007-01-24
Phenomenal book. It covers the entire ceramic process from the constituents of the clay to drying, firing and glazing or decorating. The descriptions border on the scientific but are written in such a way that you can pick the book up to read for leasure.
Within its pages you will find how to mix a clay for a specific purpose, how to support huge statues and keep small tiles straight. How to fire bisquit and how to glaze (in detail and with recepies, but this is not a glaze book) or decorate. Whether you want to cast 10 thee pots or make a lifesize sculpture of an giraffe you will find hints and tips on how to do it. Everything you need to take your ceramics over the edge.
The artworks that illustrate the book and are used as examples might not be to everyones taste (they come from a school for experimental ceramics afterall) but they fit the explanations perfectly.
If you are serious about your ceramics and want to buy one book that explains the process without specialising on only one type of application (tiles, pots, sculpture) look no further!
If you are new to pottery of sculpture the contents might be a bit daunting.

And plenty of Style is achieved........2007-05-09
Once again we find a book under the general heading of photography where the title seeks to make a very big claim. Achieving photographic style is as difficult for the photographer as trying to define what precisely is meant by that very term is for the writer. In this fascinating book by one accomplished photographer, we are treated to the works of numerous other accomplished photographers - most of whom are not household names.
In a book which is very thoughtfully laid out and presented, we find how successful photographers have found that certain measure of style in a situation where other photographers were also present and failed. It is always the successful photograph - and, thereby, the photographer, who is remembered. From people involved in confrontational and even warlike situations, to the peace and solitude of an outstanding landscape or a subject of still life, this is a book which should be studied by all photographers - if only because there is an image in there somewhere which will give you an immediate idea.
Ideas are what photography is all about and this book is packed full of them.

Book Description
More then just a textbook, A Theory of Incentives in Procurement and Regulation will guide economists' research on regulation for years to come. It makes a difficult and large literature of the new regulatory economics accessible to the average graduate student, while offering insights into the theoretical ideas and stratagems not available elsewhere. Based on their pathbreaking work in the application of principal-agent theory to questions of regulation, Laffont and Tirole develop a synthetic approach, with a particular, though not exclusive, focus on the regulation of natural monopolies such as military contractors, utility companies, and transportation authorities.
The book's clear and logical organization begins with an introduction that summarizes regulatory practices, recounts the history of thought that led to the emergence of the new regulatory economics, sets up the basic structure of the model, and previews the economic questions tackled in the next seventeen chapters. The structure of the model developed in the introductory chapter remains the same throughout subsequent chapters, ensuring both stability and consistency. The concluding chapter discusses important areas for future work in regulatory economics.
Each chapter opens with a discussion of the economic issues, an informal description of the applicable model, and an overview of the results and intuition. It then develops the formal analysis, including sufficient explanations for those with little training in information economics or game theory. Bibliographic notes provide a historical perspective of developments in the area and a description of complementary research. Detailed proofs are given of all major conclusions, making the book valuable as a source of modern research techniques. There is a large set of review problems at the end of the book.
Jean-Jacques Laffont is Professor of Economics at Université des Sciences Sociales in Toulouse where Jean Tirole is Scientific Director at the Institut d'Economié Industrielle.
Customer Reviews:
A book good for economic researcher's computer simulation.......2001-09-07
I bought this book for the grand name of "Jean Tirole" and the title. Pretty disappointed. This book only focus on modeling factors, nonetheless, quite through compiled.
If you're interesting about this field, might want to refer to;
1. Willison, the institution of capitalism ( also hierarchy )
2. Olsen, the collective action ( and other books from Olsen )
3. Tirole, the theory of industrial organization
Some books regarding "principle and agent" (no recommendation here )
NON PLUS ULTRA.......2000-05-25
This is a MUST own for scholars teaching advanced microeconomic theory, in particular for courses that emphasize in labor contracts under asymmetric information. It is written in a crisp, approachable style (for advanced undergraduate and graduate level) relying wherever possible with rigorous proofs. This book provides not only an "action packed" and up to date guide to economic theory, it takes you to the knowledge frontier in this field. I recommend it to all serious scholars and economic practitioners.

Book Description
This unique book allows readers to compare analyses of how North American states and European nation-states use incentives, regulations or plans to approach a core set of universal land use issues such as: containing sprawl, mixed use development, transit oriented development, affordable housing, healthy urban designs, and marketing smarter growth.
The concept of smart growth has gained in popularity in many countries around the world. From Europe to Asia to North America, planners, citizens, and policy makers have come to realize that patterns of urban development not only matter, but can affect the quality of life of every urban and rural resident. Comparing the approaches and results of policies in different locations is a logical way to assess policy success. While similarities and differences provide the foundation for trans-Atlantic comparisons, the contributions in this book focus on three central themes: smart growth, the role of states and nation-states, and the use of incentives, regulations and plans.
Incentives, Regulations and Plans will find an audience in the United States, Canada and Europe, especially from those interested in architecture, planning, engineering, urban studies, agriculture and public policy.

From the supplier: The limitation on tax deductions available to publicly held companies for compensation paid to their highest-paid employees under Internal Revenue Code section 162(m) should encourage corporations to use performance-based and deferred compensation alternatives. The $1 million limit on deductible compensation applies to the chief executive officer and the four other highest-paid officers. Exceptions to this disallowance exist for commission pay and performance-based pay. To qualify as performance-based, pay must be contingent on meeting objective standards established and evaluated by a committee of outside directors. Shareholders must approve the compensation scheme as well.

From the supplier: The effects of traffic safety regulations in different circumstances with different predictions concerning incentive effects are analyzed. Source of data came from a cross section and yearly time series of automobile drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians killed or injured in Norway in 1980-1986. Theoretical analysis reveals that the level of activity of individual prevention is very sensitive to different attitudes towards risk and types of risk situations. Individual changes in behavior due to regulatory changes can be predicted.
