Book Description
Liotard's fine portraits of Westerners in Turkish dress, Carpaccio's turbaned figures, and the coveted "Turkey" carpets that appear in paintings by Lotto and Holbein bear witness to a deep Western fascination with all things Ottoman. It is this cultural influence, spanning five hundred yearsfrom the fall of Constantinople through to the twentieth centurythat unites the wealth of paintings, drawings, photography, and decorative objects in this sumptuously illustrated book. The result is a visual feast of Turkish delights, from the exotic allure of the harem and Turkish baths to Ottoman-inspired Western interiors and pavilions; from paintings of Europeans in Turkish costume to carpets, silks, tulips, turbans, Iznik tiles, coffee, tobacco, and croissants. The delightfully informative text explains how Turkey, the gateway to the East, became a fountain of inspiration for so many artistic and cultural fieldspainting, ceramics, textiles, interiors, fashionin the West. Today the many fruits of this cultural meeting, enticingly displayed in this book, will engage a fresh audience with the decorative possibilities of the ravishing colors, motifs, and furnishings of traditional Turkey. 150 color photographs.

WARNING: This book is Hot, Hott, Hottt!.......2007-05-28
Not for the faint of heart. It is a very graphic, yet surprisingly well written and easy to follow storyline. This book has definately spiced up our love life. My husband wants me to find more from this author, he loves how it affects me...lol. It's basically a porno in book form...so as long as you know this, you won't be too shocked. The story is of a young married couple on their honeymoon in Turkey, the groom (a jerk) pretty much rapes his young bride instead of making her first night special and leaves her after taking her virginity to find himself a good piece of a*s. Understandably, she is very distraught and leaves their hotel before he can come back. She then has a series of very sexual adventures where she is taken and drugged and forced into being a sex slave. Just a quick note: If you are a strong feminist, you most likely will not like this book, because the main character is forced into doing these acts against her will, even though she ends up enjoying it.

Very good debut Regency.......2003-07-04
I enjoy just about everything Rosemary Edghill has written (whether under this name, or her nom de plume eluki bes shahar), and "Turkish Delight," a novel I recently bought through [Amazon.com's] used books division, was very tempting indeed.
The basic plot is as follows. Louisa Darwen's family died while overseas in Turkey; a Sultan adopted her (as he liked her and her family). She was raised in the harem, learned Turkish and the religion of the Muslims, and now is returning to England to take up her inheritance (such as it is).
Gervase, Earl of Coldmeece, is an unusual fellow. He's thirty-five, still unwed, has an unusual, strange sense of humor -- and dislikes Louisa without even meeting her, because of her unusual background.
With this sort of set-up, of course sparks are going to fly, and of course these two are going to end up together. Yet the journey here is more important than the outcome; Louisa is very funny, especially when she's chatting with other Darwens, and Gervase is also extremely amusing.
This was Ms. Edghill's debut novel, and it already showed the great promise she had (and still has) as a novelist; the dialogue is crisp and witty, the situations crackle with life and don't seem quite as contrived as other Regencies I've read, and Gervase is a most unusual hero.
I really enjoy Ms. Edghill's Regencies, because they are always amusing, funny, and touching. Still, my favorite of her Regencies remains "Two of a Kind." That one was even more unusual than this, and is even funnier in some ways. I've also read another of her Regencies, "The Ill-Bred Bride," which was also a bit better than this one in some ways.
But this was a debut novel; I doubt I'd have written one half so well, and as it stands, I'm talking about it nearly twenty years after it was released, and after reading nearly all of Ms. Edghill's subsequent output. So, on that basis, I'd say this was a solid four star effort -- and showed much of what would come later.
Buy all the Rosemary Edghill books you can! You won't regret it. :)
Quite Witty.......2002-06-29
While the plot devices are standard (and, considering how many Regency romances have been written, it is VERY hard not to rehash what has already been written) I enjoyed this book because of the brilliant dialog. Rosemary Edghill spent quite a bit of time keeping the conversations between the various characters witty and interesting. This book is definitely for readers who would enjoy the elegant and refined repartee moreso than a dashing plot and a suspenseful ending. The added bonus of multiple lovestories throughout the book was a nice touch, too. Very predictable plot but I didn't mind too much because it was so much fun getting to a thoroughly delightul ending!

Sweet Treat.......2004-05-31
Beautifully illustrated, this is one of the best tutorials on freezer-paper applique I've found. This lovely book includes patterns simple enough for those new to applique, as well as gorgeously intricate designs-irrisistable to even the most experienced quilter.
Based on timeless floral motifs admired by the artist in Turkey, these patterns, and accompanying colorful text, bring to mind the bustle of crowded street bazaars, the mystery of smoky Turkish coffeehouses, and the lush comforts of the harem.
Take a virtual magic-carpet ride, and treat yourself to some Turkish Delight!

Turkish Delights Is Fantastic.......2002-08-03
This is a great applique book. It has everything, exquisite original designs, and great illustrations and technique photos.
Linda's unit construction was new to me and it's a terrific way to handle layers and all those "little bitty pieces." Turkish Delights is the newest addition to my applique book collection and one certainly not to be missed by any appliquer--beginner to advanced.
Absolutely Wonderful!.......2002-07-16
One of the few treasured quilting books that is not only well illustrated but reads like a story and the experienced tips and tricks to applique are a great bonus! Linda transported me back to Turkey and all the things I loved and was mesmerized by while there! Thank you Linda for not only a well written document of this beautiful art but also covering the "pictures are worth a thousand words" aspect! Great job!
Absolutely beautifully written.......2002-07-10
This book transports the quilter to a whole new world. The
illustrations are simply beautiful, the directions very easy to
understand and concise. The finished quilts are truly an
inspiration. You will enjoy your trip to Turkey through these
pages. Linda has simplified the gorgeous Turkish flowers to a
level that all can understand and appreciate and your quilts
will be an inspiration that will transcend time.
I'm Inspired!.......2002-07-09
Linda gives us a peek at the traditions that inspired her (and me!). With clear instructions (and a sense of humor) she guides us through her basic creation process. Her glue-stick applique method, assorted tips and tricks, and numerous pattern options open up new dimensions in the quilting process. And the array of patterns and beautiful photos provide a visual treat! Looking for fresh ideas? Enjoy a "cultural connection"? Like to browse a beautiful book? I recommend Turkish Delights.

The Original and probably one of the best.......2006-08-14
I have the original edition printed in 1969 by Doubleday books. This is probably the best Trukish cooking book still out there. The one thing is it is missing in todays cookbook buyer expectation is the pictures, but that usually is not that important unless you plan on leaving the book on the kitchen table to be browsed as most people do.
Excellent Cookbook.......2004-12-25
The best Turkish cookbook I have seen in my life (and I have seen a lot). Clearly explained recipes. The book captures the essence of Turkish cooking.
a classic.......1999-02-13
I've been using this book for twenty years and it's a tried and true classic! Easy, delicious recipes.

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? How many Sister Wendy books can be squeezed from this seemingly indefatigable art enthusiast? Only time will tell, of course, but look! Here's another! My Favorite Things is characteristically warm and readable, with 75 reproductions of a wide range of paintings, sculptures, and miscellaneous objects like a Delft cup and saucer. There are many works that would be on any list of favorites, such as Woman in Blue Reading a Letter, by Vermeer, but there are also some lovely surprises. A little-known bronze fragment from first-century Rome is one, and Sister Wendy perceptively describes the mixed expression of wistfulness and petulance of this head of a young man. Many of her choices are fresh--like the Portuguese tile depicting a scowling owl or the 15th-century painting of Cicero as a little boy, poring over his books, looking eerily like one of Balthus's 20th-century children, but without the latter's whiff of sensuality.
Unfortunately, the book was designed by someone with perhaps too much time on her hands, whose goal seems to have been to try out every typeface in her computer kit. The frantic result is like bad makeup, insulting to both the art and the text. The book's title, with its reference to the singing nun from The Sound of Music, has a cynically commercial cast--and think how long that song would have been if raindrops on roses had led off a list of 75. No wonder Sister Wendy's asides on the works reproduced here seem rushed. However, they're also vintage Sister Wendy and draw the reader in with piquant, personal observations. For Sister Wendy aficionados, the book's charm will far outweigh its editorial shortcomings. --Peggy Moorman
Customer Reviews:
Even Sister Wendy Can't Save This Book.......2001-03-22
I love Sister Wendy. I really do. But this book can not be saved by anyone. The pictures are edited poorly. Some are too small, while others stretch across the binding in a cheap distracting fashion. I often found myself turning the book and saying, "Is that someone's head or foot?"
Sister Wendy rarely has much to say about most of the pieces in this book. No trademark historical, technical, or interesting little tid-bit. Just a few words about how much she likes this or that, no reason for her favoritism just a few words of positive acknowledgement.
Many other Sister Wendy books are well worth the money, but not this one.
Delightful and distracting.......2000-05-20
Sister Wendy, true to the refreshing style of so many of her presentations, introduces us to a pleasing array of works of art throughout history and across cultures. Some choices are predictable and some surprising, refreshing. Her observations draw even a beginning explorer of the visual arts into a relationship with each work. The new photographs of each work are excellent and the reproductions therof are both good-sized and high quality. I found myself simply delighting at each treasure. One drawback: the designer of the book used many different type fonts on each page which are sometimes interesting and attractive and sometimes distracting and irritating.

Book Description
The definitive do-it-yourself book on creating and testing all kinds of speaker systems is updated for the computer age, covering the latest makes and models and featuring an innovative computer program to assist with speaker design. Previous editions of this compendium of simple-to-advanced projects have sold well, thanks to a large audience of electronics hobbyists and technicians, handy audiophiles, and libraries and technical schools. This version supplies step-by-step details on using the expanded computer program, which can be ordered at significant savings with an included coupon. It also includes new speaker tests, expanded information on crossover networks, techniques for designing double-chamber reflex enclosures, practical rather than theoretical dimension charts, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of usless a few good projects.......2007-07-18
The science of acoustics cannot be explained so briefly. It zips through very important things and doesn't go in depth enough. It will give your some tips for basic designs but there is no way you can walk away from this book to design a top notch speaker enclosure. By all means you can copy the projects in the book but I don't feels its worth my money. Many other pre-designed enclosures are available for free. Its just to brief.
If you want to code your own software.......2006-08-21
I came across with this book in my search of free loudspeaker design code. If you are planning to code a simple program which will help you in your everyday work, like finding the right size of a box (vented or sealed) depending on the alignment tables or finding the values of a n th order filter, there is a BASIC code at the end of this book which can ease your work. Although the code belongs to an ancient BASIC compiler, the algorithm is quite useful and easy to follow. I have converted the code into C++ and ported it to HP 49G+ with HP-GCC easily. The rest of the book covers some details about building enclosures and the basics of designing a successful multi-way loudspeaker system.
This is a very good reference.......2006-03-30
Like some of the others I started with the first edition of this book it is the single best guide I have found for getting started. While now dated it is still as valid as ever since design concepts have not changed. As for those that say one no longer needs to measure driver parameters because the are now published with the drivers, think again. I have found it common that measured parameters will vary as much as 30% from those published. I personally took the formulae and created Excel spreadsheets to automate things. BTW I own several editions of Vance Dickenson's book and still consider this a better reference especially for the beginner.
Good for some, not so good for others............2005-07-13
This book may be a little complicated for begginers into the audio world. Also don't be fooled by the name of the book, this book does NOT tell you how to design and make speakers, rather, speaker systems. As in, 4-5 speakers and a subwoofer. Although, this book does touch on why speakers do certain things, along with distortions, and all those little goodies that rob you of true quatlity! It will also help you on designing different types of enclosures for all audio.
Still the Best Speaker Book for the Money!.......2005-01-09
I'm a big Weems fan! I bought the 1st edition ~25 years ago. I used the first edition to build dozens of Hi-Fi, Pro-Audio and Car loudspeaker systems. With my first edition getting pretty worn with use, so I recently purchased the 4th edition, and I am very pleased. There are other books, but Weems book is stell the best speaker book for the money!
The 4th edition has been edited to the fundamental information required to design loudspeakers. In addition, Mr. Weems added design information on 3rd and 4th order cross over networks and added the governing equations to determine fb, f3 and Vb for closed and vented boxes. The BASIC source code for programs to design speaker and cross overs is also provided. Yea, the BASIC code is a little dated since most operating systems don't have a BASIC interpreter these days. I would like to see the programs downloadable (preferably in VB), but I have used the source code and the equations to write make my own VB application.
Weems provides both exact solutions (for math lovers), and the "minimal math" approach as well. Either way, you need to do "some" math to correctly design a loudspeaker enclosure. Most folks, who have mastered high school algebra and can solve simple equations, should be able to use the charts and graphs and design boxes and cross over networks.
I recommend this book for everyone from pro's to beginners. For the Physicists and Engineers out there, you may be a little disappointed that the derivation of the solutions are not presented. For beginners, if the design task seems overwhelming, this book will provide a great foundation to buy a kit from one of the online retailers. Either way, if I had to choose one speaker building book, this would be the one.
