4 out of 5 stars A Rolling Tribute.......2000-04-25

How many of us know the origin of the roads we travel everyday? How many care? Most roads and highways today are boring, sterile paths that take us from point A to point B. There was at least one thruway that was designed for the motorist to enjoy - the Merritt Parkway. As we learn in Travelling the Merritt Parkway by Larry Learned, great thought and effort went into the design of the road and it's many Art Deco theme bridges. I've commuted on the Merritt for over 12 years and always wondered about the story behind the bridges. The book includes many original photographs showing the various stages of construction and how it looked when completed in 1938. There have been many changes over the years such as the landscape and the addition of guardrails, but the bridges remain unchanged. I found it interesting that the road was engineered to be driven at a speed less than 50 miles per hour so that the motorist could take in all the visual beauty. Today motorists are more concerned with arriving at their destination as soon as possible and cars often exceed 70 miles per hour - too fast to appreciate the intricate detail of the bridge fascia or its railings. I recommend this book to anyone interested in road or bridge construction as well as the New England motorists who travel it.

Book Description

This book traces the history of Connecticut`s Merritt Parkway from the proposals for its construction and design in the early 1920s to its triumphant completion in 1940. Filled with vintage and recent photographs, it is not only a picturesque tour of a renowned landmark (the largest Art Deco design in the world), but is also an appraisal of a major contribution to the built environment-one recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

5 out of 5 stars Super history of the nation's most beautiful highway!.......2003-02-11

If you were ever interested in finding out more about how highways were built before the Interstate system, this is the book for you! The Merritt Parkway and its extension the Wilber Cross Parkway remain marvelous designs to this day and are still enjoyable to travel on during every season. If you are from Connecticut or nearby New York, this book offers a wonderful historically perspective. The photographs are large and clear and the pages of the book are a good weight. In addition to being a good read, this book promoted a lot of family converstion about the history of the road. My great-Grandfather, for example, was the first person to ever drive over the Sikorsky Bridge built to connect the Merritt Parkway to the Boston Post Road in Milford, CT. This made the book seem all the more personal to me knowing that my family had played a part in Connecticut's history.

Super, super book! Highly recommended to those that love highways and the history of the American road!

              Book Description

Nationally recognized woodturner Judy Ditmer shares her techniques for making beautiful, fanciful jewelry on the wood lathe. Beginning with the turning of tiny "bowls" by hand from a variety of wood, she then cuts and sands them into various shapes, producing graceful compound curved edges and surfaces. They are finished and assembled with findings, wires, and beads of silver, glass, or stone. The result is beautiful, unique jewelry.

Judy takes the turner step-by-step through the process of creating this wearable art form. Each step is illustrated with a color photograph and captioned in a concise and informative way. Novice and experienced turners alike will enjoy and profit from her insights and secrets. An extensive gallery of finished works, touches upon the infinite varieties of forms and combinations this jewelry can take.

5 out of 5 stars Earrings & Pins: Easy, Fun and Unique.......1998-12-30

64 pages, full color, 20 page gallery. Step by step color photos w/ instructions for making earrings and pins. Judy's basic idea is turn a shallow/thin bowl, saw it into pieces on the scroll saw, sand the edges on a spindle sander, decorate the pieces with paint (optional). Add jewelry findings and jewelry making beads, with one or more of the wooden pieces to create earrings and pins. I love doing this, it's easy, fun and the earrings don't even have to be duplicates. What a great idea.

                  Book Description

Photographs that offer beauty in the commonplace, nostalgia in the mundane, and American universality in urban New Jersey.

The photographs of George Tice combine an appreciation of beauty with the grittiness of ordinary experience. Tice, the photographer/author of books like Hometowns: An American Pilgrimage, Fields of Peace, and the award-winning Paterson, has turned his camera many times to his native New Jersey. But these images of his home state, taken over the past thirty years, could be almost anywhere in America. They portray the movie theaters, shops, dwellings, and street scenes we have grown up with in cities large and small. Without the slightest effort to romanticize, Tice honors the commonplace with an extraordinary eye and a photographic excellence that is evocative to those of us who have experienced these settings. These pictures will stand the test of time as monuments to the American scene for future generations. 141 duotone photographs.

                  Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars commonplace, mundane nostalgia.......2004-04-06

I was disappointed. I had hoped for so much more. He treads ground already well-beaten by his predecessors Charles Sheeler, Paul Strand, Andre Kertesz, Walker Evans, but without their eye for the arresting perspective or the play of light and form. His compositions are rather flat and banal, more like postcards for the scenes he presents, wrapped in a hazy glow of romanticized nostalgia reminiscent of dorm room Edward Hopper prints.

There are a few pictures that rise above the mediocre to reach the level of pretty good, such as his White Castle photo or the nighttime scene of Petit's Mobil Station, but even these seem to rely on a striking, but cheap, play of light illuminating darkness to achieve their effect. Overall, one gets the sense that he's a Thomas Kinkade who wishes he were Charles Sheeler.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty in the Ordinary World.......2002-09-17

This book is a culmination of Tice's work on landscapes in one of the most urbanized areas in the world, New Jersey, lying between two great metropolises of NYC and Philadelphia. He epitomizes the artist who is able to find meaning and emotional content in even the most mundane subject. Locations that many of us would pass each day (and I have passed a number of the sites photgraphed) without a further thought are subjects of insightful photographs that show us something about a subject we may not have considered without the artist's insight. It is a simple matter to record a beautiful scene; quite another to portray the essence of a subject in a photograph in a manner that conveys its intrinsic worth. Much of Tice's work is, of course, already held by some of the most important museums in the world, and are well known to those who follow fine art photography. See, for instance, Strand Theater (page 33), White Castle (page 35), Oak Tree (page 47), and, of course, Petit's Mobil Station (page 67 and book cover). But many of the photographs are not as well known, and may not be quite as accessible. They are, nonetheless, well worth the effort to understand and appreciate. They span photographs of blue collar hangouts that evoke an immediate feeling of familiarity (e.g. St. George's Diner - page 71; Main Street Rahway, page 36), to the cool beauty of the Newark Bay seen from the Pulaski Skyway (page 90). The diversity of the photographs is stunning, as is their reproduction in duotone. Highly recommended!

                        Book Description

This book explores public utility regulation using an economic framework of regulation. The purpose of regulation is to promote economic efficiency and perhaps fairness by putting restrictions on the economic opportunities of the utility firm. This framework allows the author to specify what a regulator must do to maximize the economic benefits to consumers. This book is written for regulators, utilities, and academics interested in the study of regulation.
