A Great Entomology Textbook.......1999-12-23
Well-organized, well-written introductory text to Entomology is more than your basic textbook. Includes a logical progression of information, as well as critical taxonomy keys, this is one of the best science text books I've ever seen. This book is sure to be a foundation that even graduate students will refer back to again and again.
Customer Reviews:
Joy of gardening.......2000-05-07
I thought this book was like an encylapidia to gardening, it had so much helpful information, and was so easy to understand and use. If you are a first or pro gardener this book will fasinate you, and give you intresting garning ideas. This book is a must have.
Book Description
This book is a comprehensive, fully cross-referenced collection of approximately 35,000 terms, names and phrases used in entomology. It is the only listing which covers insect anatomy, behavior, biology, ecology, histology, molecular biology, morphology, pest management, taxonomy and systematics. The origin, etymology, part of speech, plural forms and definition of each term and phrase are all provided, including the language, meaning or root of each term and constituent parts. Where meanings have changed, or terms have been borrowed from other disciplines, the most current usage is indicated. Names of deceased entomologists, or scientists from other fields who have contributed to entomology are included, with the citation for their biography or obituary. The list of names in this magnificent reference is global, including entomologists from Asia, whose research has often been neglected by Western scientists.

Beautiful presentation by internationally recognized expert.......2001-08-27
The more than thousand full-color specimen photographs in "The Encyclopedia of Butterflies" were taken at the Allyn Museum of Entomology/Florida Museum of Natural History, which houses one of the world's largest butterfly collections. This encyclopedia includes all of the world's butterflies, arranged in four family groups: the swallowtails (Papilionidae); the whites and sulfurs (Pieridae); the brush-footed butterflies (Nymphalidae); and the hairstreaks, coppers, and blues (Lycaenidae).
According to the author, this is the first butterfly encyclopedia to exclude the skippers (Hesperiidae), as they are now thought to show more similarities to moths than to butterflies. Also, butterflies previously classified as separate families, i.e. Satyridae, Danaidae, Nymphalidae, and Libytheidae are combined here as one family, Nymphalidae, "since they have one overriding characteristic: four functional legs. Their first pair of legs are [sic] redundant: they do not function for locomotion." As soon as I read the author's allegation that Nymphalidae had only four functional legs, I rushed out into the backyard. As luck would have it, the first two butterflies I spotted--- a Monarch and a smaller Painted Lady---were both perched on the butterfly bush using only four legs! The Cabbage butterflies over on the zinnias had six legs apiece. Dr. Feltwell, who is an internationally recognized expert on butterflies and who serves as a consultant on the management of butterfly farms in the United States and Great Britain was right! Isn't it odd how after a lifetime of watching butterflies, I never noticed the difference between families until a book like this pointed it out to me? Three things will probably prevent "The Encyclopedia of Butterflies" from being used as a field guide: it is quite a large book; it covers too much territory (the whole earth); and its familial classification scheme doesn't really support a quick field identification.
However, it is a marvelous `rainy day' book. The photographs are gorgeous, and the clearly-written text covers all of the major butterfly families in detail, including taxonomy, structure, life cycle, migration pattern, habitat, and protected status. Read "The Encyclopedia of Butterflies" at leisure, when darkness or weather prevents you from venturing outside with your field book.

Book Description
Since its first edition, this textbook has provided the reader with all the basic information on insects, mites and ticks that affect human health. Arthropod vectors of human diseases, such as malaria and typhus, are a continuing threat to human health. This work covers the identification and biology and ecology of these medically important arthropods and how they can be controlled. Medically important arthropods concern students of tropical medicine, parasitology and pest control. The volume is an essential reference for physicians, nurses and community health workers. Customer Reviews:
The almost-definitive first text for the short course in medical entomology.......2006-05-20
One of the best, most thorough short books out there on the subject -- easy to tote around, concise, yet readable and even enjoyable. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the stinging arthros are skipped out on, but if that's important to you, your best bet might be downloading the notes pages from the University of California's course pages website (I'd recommend, honestly, snagging all of their pages from their micro and parasitology departments -- these are GOOD notes and videos, priceless and yet price-less), and/or snagging a copy of the appropriate (and it will be longer) chapter on subject same from "Medical and Veterinary Entomology" (which is probably my 5-star GET THIS IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT text/reference and all-around reader on the subject. It's thorough, it's got good pictorial coverage, and it's incredibly readable -- but expensive (worth it, but what good is that if you can't afford it -- and you'll RARELY (read: probably NEVER) find a cheap used copy on here or anywhere).
As for this particular (short, handy, soft-cover and light) book: Note well that if you're taking an undergrad course in med (and maybe also vet) parasitology with entomology, this book is the most often used book in my experience. It can be well-supplemented (especially in the graphics section, which is admittedly poor, save for the very helpful line drawings and graphs) by John T. Sullivan's "Electronic Atlas of Parasitology" CD (currently in Version 2.02 (as far as I know), available from the author who is a professor at UC-San Francisco, via ebay, and possibly also via Amazon, for somewhere around $12-15).
All in all, I thoroughly recommend this book, ESPECIALLY for anybody reviewing for exams or finals, where it truly shines for its concision and well-thought-out format. If you've got labs (and especially if you have a lot of lab quizzes), this book will only get you so far in preparation for that portion of your education (for eg, while you might find descriptions of differentiating culex from aedes, the pictures themselves are pretty much necessary, take my word) -- do do the extra work and obtain something with good pictorial (color is preferable but not necessary) views... even if it is a book specifically on field entomology & identification, or in combination with that CD (more helpful with the parasitology portion, to be honest).
Concise and Thorough.......2000-06-12
This paperback volume is a bit pricey but worth it for the information contained. Line drawings accompany and compliment the text. This book is very much up-to-date. Two shortcomings kept it from a 5 star rating: the bees & wasps are not included, and the addition of some color plates would have been most helpful.

Skip this low quality book.......2001-01-16
Despite being published in 1990, many of the contributed chapters are written on typewriters, with low quality illustrations and typesetting. The quality of writing is often not much better, making for a book that is tedious to read. There are a lot of books on liquid crystals, and you can do much better than this set of volumes.

From the supplier: Horry-Georgetown Technical College is using Sharp Electronics Corp's XV-P10U portable LCD projector in classes, meetings and teleconferences. The projector costs approximately $2,000 and includes a three-watt audio system and full-range speaker. Its single-lens projects images from distances between 30 and 100 feet diagonally. It is also able to support multiple S-VHS equipment, such as VCRs, video cameras and videodisc players. Its light weight of nine pounds makes it easy to carry and set up. The college has also used the XV-P10U to project public service meetings, courses, and educational programs from satellite and television. A study conducted by the college revealed that students' concentration increased when using the large-screen projections.

Book Description
It is an ironical fact that Lady Wetherby was by nature one of the firmest believers in existence in the policy of breaking things gently to people. She had a big, soft heart, and she hated hurting her fellows. As a rule, when she had bad news to impart to any one she administered the blow so gradually and with such mystery as to the actual facts that the victim, having passed through the various stages of imagined horrors, was genuinely relieved, when she actually came to the point, to find that all that had happened was that he had lost all his money. But now in perfect innocence, thinking only to pass along an interesting bit of information, she had crushed Bill as effectively as if she had used a club for that purpose.

Customer Reviews:
A disappointing reading.......2006-05-15
"Simon Vance's delivery is understated ..." is an understatement! Sadly, this reading is nowhere near as entertaining as a reading by Martin Jarvis, Jonathan Cecil or
Ian Carmichael. The story is excellent, but I recommend reading the book instead of listening to this particular audio presentation. But with the right readers (identified above) Wodehouse stories can be fantastic accompaniments to travel or other activities during which you'd rather listen to, than read, the stories.
not his finest moment.......2006-03-14
This early Wodehouse novel has much of the charm of his 'classic' work but lacks that touch of comedic genius that his finest novels display with such gusto. This is a pleasant farce that will take up a nice summer afternoon but is not one that this reader will return to in years to come.
Easy Reading.......2005-01-06
This book was first published in the U.S. on March 17, 1916 by D. Appleton and Company, and then in the U.K. on October 4, 1917 by Methuen & Co., so it is a fairly early Wodehouse story. Although this is better than most of his early stories, it is not as good as some of his writing that would come later. Those who know Wodehouse will find themselves in familiar territory.
The main character of this story is Lord Dawlish, who has a title but not much money, a fact of which his fiancée, Claire Fenwick, reminds him repeatedly. He suddenly finds that he has been left a fortune by a man he hardly knew, and being the honorable man he is he feels he needs to restore at least some of this money to its rightful heirs. This takes him to America, where Claire also finds herself when a friend of hers writes her asking to visit.
To attempt to cover a Wodehouse plot completely would take much too long and I could never do it justice. As one would expect there are several interesting characters, and lots of plot twists. In the end, as with all of his stories, love wins out, and the reader enjoys the ride all the way.
This edition is another in "The Collector's Wodehouse" series being published by The Overlook Press in the U.S. (in the U.K. it is "The Everyman's Wodehouse" series being published by Everyman's Library).
Ailing? Try some Wodehouse medicine!.......2002-12-18
I do not regret having read all of the Wodehouse books written before this one, but I have to express my delight at finally starting to get to the books that made Wodehouse's reputation. This particular one isn't tied to any of his serieses, but shares a lot with both the Blandings castle and Bertie & Jeeves books. First off, there's Lord Dawlish, the sort of chap who is just a little too nice for his own good, the kind who always gets nipped by one and all for a fiver here or a ten-spot there. Then there's his fiancee, who's obsessed on the money deal; an eccentric wealthy old man; a couple of Americans; and a nightclub-singing Lady (as in Lord and Lady). There's money, and the lack of it, that seems to be a separate character content to flirt with all the rest of the cast. A little plot line regarding golf, keeping bees, transatlantic trips, people who may or may not be who they are, a will that may or may not be the operative one, people mistaken for themselves and others, and true love. My god, the formula is so easy, yet as any one knows who has tried a hand at this stuff, just because you've got the recipe, it doesn't mean your souffle rises in the same way.
This is a good one to recommend to people who have never read Wodehouse before, because it is compact and self-contained. It's been said that laughter is the best medicine--if so, then Wodehouse is a wonder drug.
Not one of the Master's best,.......2000-07-18
A pleasant enough read, but falls far short of most of the other Wodehouse that I have read. A person reading only this work would have no idea that Wodehouse is probably the greatest writer in the history of the English language except perhaps for that Bard guy from back when.

"Uneasy Money" rating.......2001-12-20
"Uneasy Money" was a great book. I enjoyed reading it and it wasn't boring at all. It was a great book because it told you that just because you have money doesn't mean that a problem won't arise. It was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone. I think the book was made for everyone who can read. I really enjoyed it.
