He explores the perennial issues of discrimination, financing of the infrastructure for new development, the process of negotiating zoning matters, and two issues of increasing significance--aesthetics and historic preservation. A series of broad-ranging essays examine land use planning in the United States, its institutional and cultural framework, and the reasons for its definitive character.
Despite its achievements, the American system of land use planning has failed to serve fundamental public policy objectives.
The Political Culture of Planning examines the main issue facing land use planning today--how to channel the forces of development into spatial forms which are held to be socially desirable. Drawing on his considerable experience in both Britain and Canada, Cullingworth explores the limited possibilities for the future of land use reform in the United States.

How is the United States different from other states? Why is it different? The Roots of American Exceptionalism draws on societies' unique histories, distinctive paths of institutional development and contrasting cultures to explain why they adopt different policies for common problems. It compares the United States with Sweden on tax policy, Canada on financing medical care, France on abortion policy, and Japan on immigration. The book shows that American public policies across these four areas fit a pattern of embodying the fundamental beliefs and value priorities of a particular culture: individualism. And while American public policies are rational from this cultural perspective, this culturally-constrained rationality is contrasted with alternative culturally-constrained rationalities, that are more egalitarian and/or hierarchical, prevailing in Sweden, Canada, France and Japan.

Are there significant variations in the ways planners in different nations have influenced urban, regional, and national development? Do such variations arise from differences in planning cultures, meaning the collective ethos and dominant attitude of planners in different nations towards the appropriate roles of the state, market forces, and civil society? How are such professional cultures formed? Are they indigenous and immutable, or do they evolve with social, political, and economic changes both within and outside the national territories? Specifically, what has been the impact of the intensification of global interconnectedness in trade, capital flows, labor migration, and technological connectivity on national planning cultures?
Comparative Planning Cultures addresses these questions, drawing on the planning experience in ten nations and at different territorial levels. The result is an understanding of planning culture that is complex and dynamic-in contrast to traditional notions of culture that evoke a sense of immutability and inheritance of unchanging social attributes of planners. The volume concludes that there is no cultural nucleus or core planning culture, no social gene that can be decoded to reveal the cultural DNA of planning practice of any nation.

This is an excellent book, with a really clear argument and analysis. If you are interested in rural politics, comparative political science, or social movements and rebellions, it is worth checking out.

The struggle between politicians and bureaucrats for control over public policy decision making is an important feature of politics in all advanced democratic political systems. It has a particular intensity in Japan, especially now with the bureaucracy under attack for its policy failures and its resistance to reform and with the political party system going through a period of fundamental change. Japan is in the midst of the search for a new framework for policymaking, a search that involves not only the relationship between politicians and bureaucrats but that between the Prime Minister's Office and the governing party organizations, the role of Diet committees, and the issue of staff support for politicians, parties, and the prime minister and cabinet.
Following an overview written by volume editor Gerald L. Curtis, this book offers the perspective of six politicians from the Liberal Democratic, Democratic, and New Komeito parties who represent a new generation of politicians in Japan attempting to design a new architecture for policymaking. Each of them discusses the role that politicians play in the policy process from the perspective of a specific substantive policy issue. Two chapters, one by a member of the LDP and another by a Democratic Party member, offer differing perspectives on banking system reform. Also included are chapters by LDP politicians on education and information technology, one by a Democratic Party politicians on reform of the government's huge public works programs, and another by a member of the New Komeito on revision of the Commercial Code. Together these chapters provide important analysis of several critical issues confronting the Japanese political economy today and insights in the Japanese debate about the role politicians do and should play in policymaking.

Beautiful, simple projects & decorating advice.......1999-11-11
This is a wonderful book for learning to paint china using new paints that don't require kiln firing. The projects are both beautiful & simple to make. I also found the full-color photos to be very inspirational.
About half the book is dedicated to helping you learn design & decorating basics, including using china in every room of your home. Different styles such as Classical, Victorian, Mediterranean & English are described.
Fifteen projects with step-by-step explanations and photos follow. My favorites were an oriental bowl, spice jars & a country quilt vase. There is also great basic information on materials & techniques.
I was surprised how easy, but impressive the verdigris & marbling finishes were to recreate. The supply list is also a nice bonus. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about ceramic painting.

I read 3 Nouwen books at the same time. This was excellent and gave me a very new understanding of this story in the bible. This and the other two books I read (Reaching Out and Can You Drink the Cup) were excellent spiritual reading.

This is by far the best book for a troubled soul. It surrounds the reader with hope and warmth and kindness. When all is bleak, this is the book that will give the reader confidence in life.

Nouwen at his best.......2007-08-31
This is a masterpiece! Nouwen looks at the prodigal son through the perspectives of the prodigal, the older brother and the father. It allows us to identify with each of the characters at different points in our lives. Rembrandt's imagery of the father is very moving. It gives a beautiful perspective of the desire, mercifulness, and love that our Lord has for us sinners. I highly reccomend this book. It is one of the best books on spirituality I have read.

Herni Nouwen does a great job on decribing the parable of the prodigal son. A great book to read for someone who has had a friend or family member who has gone astray.

Spend your year with the Simpsons like you should be. The centerfolds in the calendars make nice posters, if you're into that kind of thing. I've been using the Simpsons Fun calendar for about 4 years now, and I'm never disappointed. This year's theme is travel, so the pictures are scenes from episodes, unlike previous calendars which were made up for the most part.

I buy this every year for my teenage son. It's becaome tradition and each year it is hung on the wall and used. He loves it because he loves the Simpsons. There are birthdays listed of celebrities although I'm not sure he cares too much about that. The calendar is usually funny and colorful.
