Very misleading...Interior is depicted on the box cover, yet there is not one interior photo in the set of cards. Would not have ordered these if I had known this.

I love New Orleans!.......2001-12-28

I really love New Orleans and really love this book! The pictures in it are beautiful and really capture the French Quarter well. I love having this book so that when I miss NOLA, I can just open it up and feel like I'm there! I also like using this book for decorating ideas. I would suggest this book to anyone who loves New Orleans, or someone looking for decorating ideas. It is a great addition to my New Orleans books collection!

Oui, let the good times roll. Top ten reviewer's, Mr. Mitchell's, suberb glimpse through his words sold me on this fascinating book. Anticipating arrival from Amazon was like licking my lips for a taste of cafe au lait and sugary beignets from Cafe De Monde.

New Orleans or N'Awlnsss as some say, is one grande damme of a city, one of my favorites. History, vibrant colors, music, food, the naughty and the mannerly--I can never get enough. We spent New Years Eve there cruising our favorite haunts and finding new ones. This book by Kerri McCaffety shows mostly the hidden New Orleans. Unique furnishings, paintings, gardens and secretive views from galleries or balconies. One can almost feel Jean Lafitte, the pirate, stare through you as you dare to cross Pirates Row behind the most photograhed church in the country, St. Louis Cathederal in Jackson Square.

One of my very favorite photos is one of the first, a frosty icicle adorned tropical courtyard--a true testament to contrasting Crescent City. Another is the dreamscaped dome in a three story townhouse. Harrah's in NO, has almost captured that feeling in their Jazz Bar.

The only thing I wish, is that there were more photos of , well, the rollicking side to this humming city on the Mississippi. There are a few great shots of Mardi Gras, Bourbon street, Cafe De Monde and the French Market. But I want more!

Again, thank you to Don Mitchell for reviewing so well. I found a true treasure in "The Majesty of the French Quarter".

The Majesty of the French Quarter; A Future Focus.......2000-08-08

Kerri McCaffety's lovely book provides locals and visitors alike the opportunity to glimpse the mystery and beauty behind the walls of the French Quarter. These beautiful homes reflect not only the talent of a wonderful photographer, but also the artistry, imagination and love of the homes' inhabitants. "The Majesty of the French Quarter" thoroughly captures the diverse styles and influences that make the homes in the French Quarter so exciting and unique. In fact, this diversity mirrors the many cultural influences that make the city of New Orleans a place like no other.

Ms. McCaffety's photographs display a very keen eye for detail; however, the same cannot be said of the accompanying text. In future editions, it would be wonderful if all owners' names were spelled correctly. Additionally, these beautiful homes deserve to be identified by their correct names. Although the numerous errors do not detract from the visual beauty of the book, "The Majesty of the French Quarter" would certainly be enhanced by the correction of these inaccuracies. The wonderful people who opened their homes to Kerri and to all readers deserve nothing less.

A Lush, Luxurious, Loving Look at the Vieux Carre.......2000-07-25

Although I have been to the French Quarter in New Orleans many times, I have never seen her look lovelier than in this gorgeous book by photographer Kerri McCaffety. Usually photographs don't quite capture the magic of the moment, but these still images seem to transcend their subjects.

The French Quarter is a study in contrasts: different architectural styles, various decorating techniques inside, exquisite gardens and fountains behind, and very little space anywhere. In many cases, the front of the building is by far the least interesting part . . . even though that's all that the tourists ever see. McCaffety takes you past the front door into the foyers, dining rooms, bedrooms, and gardens where the spirit of the French Quarter really reigns. No garden of orchids could ever match the color and variety of these many hidden sites. Never has so much happened in such a small area.

The photographs capture all of this in loving detail. The peeling paint and partially restored interiors often look better for Ms. McCaffety's treatment. Versailles could use her talents.

Not content with being a photographic genius, she also wrote essays for this magnificant volume that provide a sense of the place, people, and history. Although the facts were mostly all known to me, her enigma-explaining writing style and love of this place provided a poetry to the experience that mirrored the beauty of the photographs.

If you have to choose between a trip to New Orleans and reading this book, take the book! Wow!

You can also use this book to learn not to judge a place or a person by your initial impression. As this book shows, you cannot see the natural pearl until you open the oyster. Discard your incorrect views of New Orleans and replace them with these beauties.

Get Pictures!.......2007-08-24

This book has a lot of interesting info and the pictures are amazing! The ONLY problem that I have with the book is that some of the numbers for the B&Bs and museums are no longer working. Great job otherwise!

This is a beautiful book and all the more important in the light of recent events. The copy is repetitive and dry but the pictures are lovely. I would have appreciated more info on the architecture and history of the times these homes were built.

Nicely done.......2005-08-23

More photos than words, but very nice. It is divided into four sections: architecture, coutryards & patios, Ironworks, and cemeteries. I wish it had been longer than the 112pp. And that it included some of the stunning Protestant churches of New Orleans. The bibliography lists just seven works! But a nicely packaged, well illustrated book.

Majesty Indeed.......2004-12-29

This is a very well put together book. I am familiar with St. Charles and this book captures the avenue well; I can almost hear the streetcar. The author did a very good job of selecting the houses represented in this book. I only wish that more pictures where taken of the exterior of the homes. The photography is well done, though the photography in the book Classic New Orleans is superior. I suggest if you are interested in this subject you buy this book and Classic New Orleans, they fit perfect together; like crawfish and new potatoes.

Beautiful southern homes--great design resource.......2004-07-03

This book is highly recommended as a compendium of beautiful southern homes. The photos are not available online to view, but the book features many styles of Victorian homes and estates as well as some garden views of those homes. I purchased this book as a resource for 19th century mural work and decorative painting and it has been invaluable for that as well as for my library on Victorian style (although some of the interiors are intentionally eclectic and are not all true to period). The book features stained glass windows, woodwork, murals, inventive use of color, design, and original architecture. I never would have purchased the book if I had not seen a favorable review and photos in Victorian Homes mag, so I hope to do you the favor of endorsing the purchase for you. Very highly recommended.

I can sum up the author's advice:.......2003-03-08

The author does not explain how to design, nor even the basic elements of design. Her instruction boils down to "look at what the professionals have done." For instance, on the subject of designing your own stained glass pieces, she suggests re-drawing any (or all!) of the 84 designs included in the book. Just keep re-drawing them until you get a feel for proper design. And on the subject of reinforcing your pieces, she suggests looking at how professionals have reinforced their works, and then experiment with different methods and products until you figure out what works. This is not helpful advice from a professional, this is the type of advice you might get from a novice pretending to know what they're talking about. Keep looking for a good design book.

Exceptional book.......2000-01-07

This book weaves useful bits of knowledge about tools and techniques into its text. It is a substantial leap above the average 'how to' stained glass book.

Review of How to Design Stained Glass.......1999-12-12

The book covered some of the basic principles of design pretty well. I found the section on shapes that should not be used to be rather helpful. I was expecting there to be more on blending different textures of glass, working with light sources, using color and line, and other principles of design, but this book did not cover these subjects. I also thought the patterns were a little disappointing -- some of them were nice, but others (such as the Spiderman and motocyclist patterns) seemed rather dated.

One Size Fits all... Almost........2000-06-20

The book includes a brief history of the company that made the classic, and some say, best cameras to come out of the 1960's. A sincere attempt to provide detailed coverage of the Spotmatic, K, M and finally, LX series of cameras is moderately successful for those who are familiar with these cameras. A good portion of the book is given over to general photography concepts and techniques. This provides a good refresher course and a handy reference. In many instances, tie-ins are made with various Pentax models, and overall, Pentax owners will find this book very useful. Collectors with considerable experience, both in making pictures and with these cameras will, however, be disappointed by the broad strokes used to describe the details of individual models. Many details, important to serious collectors and those making purchasing decisions, are overlooked. For example, the Spotmatic II is described merely as a Spotmatic with a hot shoe. Significant differences exist and are ignored. If you need every book written about the early TTL SLR Pentax cameras, then this book is a "must-have". If you need a book that is useful from a general standpoint and discusses early Pentax cameras too, this book comes with a good recommendation. If however, you want a definitive work about one of the most influential camera manufacturers and their products, you will do well to look elsewhere.
