Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Post & Beam is excellent.......2006-02-26

This book is by far the best I have read on the subject of post and beam construction. Lots of nice drawings and understandable instructions. Good advice for average person. Explains wood joinery very well

3 out of 5 stars Not for the non-builder..........2005-10-25

If you are not building your own home, I don't recommend this book

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2005-10-08

This book is excellent. It gave me all the information I wanted/needed plus more.

5 out of 5 stars I actually did it........2005-06-22

The other reviewers of this book allude to the fact that they will someday get around to using the information. I have already done it and wanted to add my comments here.

I used this book as my "bible" to construct a 24x40 log home with a porch wrapped all the way around. It took two years, but I couldn't have done it by myself without the theories and examples in this book. My joinery isn't as pretty as the ones in the book, but I used them and wooden pegs to secure all the posts and beams in the house.

I highly recommend this book to all who have their own 'library' of log home books and need some practical advice that works.

5 out of 5 stars The Craft of Modular Post & Beam.......2004-01-11

I first stumbled on this wonderful book in our local library. Read it cover to cover in two weeks and unfortunatly had to return it but, it is on my birthday wish list. This is the most informative book on the subject I have read to date. Mr Mitchell did an excellent job in the chapters covering the details of modular log home construction. Many of which I plan to use in the very near future.

5 out of 5 stars excellent guide for beginners.......2001-07-09

This book is excellent for all beginners and experienced carpenters alike. It gives all the information needed to complete a timber frame project, and gives the info in easy to understand terminalogy. It has good examples of all the types of joinery needed for a timber frame. I have just finished doing a 16 x 24 foot pottery building that has turned out very nice. I made all my plans and cut the timbers by using the information in this book. It has been a valuable tool in the process.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer to timberframing, a must read........1999-01-17

Originally copyrighted in 1977, The Timber Framing Book was one of the first books published about the timber framing revival. Stewart Elliott and Eugenie Wallas have carefully crafted a simple book on the basics, including planning, mathematics and simple engineering, layout, joint cutting and raising. There are a large number of very nice drawings by Linda Foss that illustrate all aspects of timber frames. In the center of the book are 22 pages of black and white photographs by Jeremy Foss and Randy Hillner that clearly document the raising of a frame, beginning to end. The last chapter of the book describes the building of a 12' x 16' timber frame shed. There are drawings, a timber schedule and complete raising plan to test you new found skills. This was done in the March 1980 issue of Rodale's New Shelter magazine, including a clapboards and a slate roof. Also included are a seven page Glossary, a two page Bibliography, a five page Appendix of drawings of basic timber framing joints and their uses. The Timber Framing Book is a great way to get a clear understanding of timber frames before graduating to books by other authors like Tedd Benson. This book is a must have for any timber framer's toolbox.

    Book Description

Timberframe homes--also known as post-and-beam homes--have long set the standard for integrity and elegance, and the authors of The Timberframe Way have built some of the best.
Here in one book is a careful study of all the elements that make a timberframe home both a lifestyle and a work of art. Every construction method is covered, from prefabricated, manufactured kits to "one-off" frames hand-hewn by independent craftsmen using traditional methods. Topics include everything from checking out kits to choosing materials for the roof to transforming old barns into homes.

Attention is also given to interior elements of construction and design, as well as to products and decor that are especially suited to the rugged beauty of the timberframe home. There are chapters on outfitting the kitchen, managing traffic patterns between rooms, selecting furniture to complement the wide open spaces of the timberframe home, and even choosing lighting fixtures.

From the first inspiration to the final touches, The Timberframe Way is the complete introduction to the art of the timberframe home.

5 out of 5 stars 2003's Most Beautiful Home Living Book.......2003-12-18

The cozy timberframe home - also known as post-and-beam - is the one home design style that probably elicits more `longing for' than any other. Unfortunately, with cookie-cutter suburban developments plopping `bloated toad' houses on barren lots, not too many of us can escape to our lodge-like home. But we can sure lose ourselves in the dreams of owning one - or designing and building one. Now, good friend of our LivingHome.com site, Michael Morris, and Dick Pirozzolo, have produced with The Lyons Press 2003's most beautiful home living book, The Timberframe Way. This holiday we can't wait to sit around the fireplace in our way-more-ugly home than those pictured in the book and drool over every picture.

        Book Description

A step-by-step guide to drawing Celtic knots, the most widely appealing form within the rich repertoire of Celtic design.

This comprehensive survey of Celtic knot design is based on the canon of traditional knot patterns collected by the father of the nineteenth-century Celtic Art revival, John Romilly Allen. His work has inspired generations of modern Celtic artists, but until now his definitive collection of knots from authentic sources has only been available in an obscure academic journal.

Aidan Meehan's Treasury is the most complete compendium available on these marvelously decorative and versatile designs. He first presents all the Celtic knots that Romilly Allen discovered, making each pattern intelligible with detailed instructions that show the primary, secondary, and tertiary dot grids, and then finishes the designs that the earlier artist provided. The knots are no longer clipped out of context, with loose ends, but developed into whole new ornaments, shown in two colors and in a variety of treatments. 752 illustrations in 2 colors .

I have begun only recently drawing Celtic knots. I recommend Celtic Knots - Mastering the Traditional Patterns as a first book for beginners. I am currently working on The Treasury of Celtic Knots and finding knots as clearly explained as Celtic Knots, although the knots are much harder for me to draw. That's my failing rather than Mr. Meehan's. I especially like the round knots although mine turn out not exactly round. Practice, practice, practice.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, inexpensive art-photo book with some problems. 3.5 stars.......2006-06-04

This is a Dover-style reprint-illo book -- not as well-documented or professionally-produced as the Dover books, but the imagery reproduced here is so compelling that the book is well-worth a look.

For instance, here's the Gundestrup Cauldron (circa first century BC): see customer images. This huge silver vessel, found dismantled in a Danish peat bog, is filled with enigmatic images of Celtic deities and rituals. See Wikipedia for the details, which you won't find in this book. But the photographs here are excellent.

Which is the pattern for the book: tantalizing photos of really cool artifacts, like the Battersea Shield (see photo), dredged from the Thames, where it was likely placed as an offering, some 2000 years ago. With just enough information to tantalize (or frustrate) the reader. Fortunately, you can easily research the ones that particularly interest you online.

So: the quality of the photographic reproductions is variable -- but many of these artifacts are simply wonderful, and many were new to me. The paper quality is good, and the book is inexpensive. Cautiously recommended to Celtic art fans.

        Happy reading--

              Book Description

`This volume offers a fresh perspective on the IP/antitrust interface. Its blend of economic policy analysis and provocative policy prescriptions is particularly noteworthy. It is noteworthy for the scope of its coverage (patent, copyrights, and database protection) and international focus. I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a sophisticated comparative perspective on the harmonization of IP and antitrust enforcement policies.' - Alden Abbott, US Federal Trade Commission

In modern markets innovation is at least as great a concern as price competition. The book discusses how antitrust policy and patent and copyright laws interact to create market dynamics that affect both competition and innovation.

                Book Description

While the global trade regime has made significant strides in eliminating tariffs and other barriers to free trade, it has yet to develop a consistent and enforceable antitrust and competition policy that combats monopolies, cartels, and other private arrangements that continue to hamper equitable access to the world's goods and services. This book takes a giant step toward achieving this goal. Based on a conference of national authorities and leading scholars in antitrust and competition law and policy, Competition Policy in the Global Trading System: Perspectives from the EU, Japan and the USA presents twenty insightful essays which together provide an in-depth assessment of current achievements and impasses, as well as a variety of possible ways forward. Among the relevant factors in this progression, the authors discuss such approaches as: + bilateral and regional international cooperation agreements; + WTO competition rules, enforceable through the dispute resolution procedure; and + international development of US, EU, and Japanese antitrust laws. Each of these approaches is examined through the all-important lens of enforcement - a spectrum that extends from deterrence to private actions imposing such penalties as prejudgment interest or treble damages. The crucial issue of how international antitrust rules should be incorporated into the global trading system is explored from many angles. Significantly, the book comes at a time when the report of the U.S. International Competition Policy Advisory Committee (ICPAC) is under close scrutiny in all major trading countries. The conference on which this book is based was in fact the first occasion at which top-level antitrust enforcers discussed this report. Including as it does the opinions of several former and present government and WTO leaders in antitrust and competition policy, Competition Policy in the Global Trading System: Perspectives from the EU, Japan and the USA sets the stage for the integration of trade and competition rules that is now gathering momentum. It is a book no official or academic in the field can do without.

                  Book Description

This work tackles central controversies in the field of EC competition law in order to stimulate discussion on major policy areas. It includes important contributions on key issues such as + the Commission's attitude toward vertical restraints, + the difficulties arising from the application of EC competition law by national administrations and national courts, + the often unbalanced relationship between competition law and the consumer, + the Commission's attitude toward joint ventures and toward public service obligations, + the difficulties with the new Form A/B for notifications, and + the wide ambit of the duty of Community loyalty imposed by Article 5 EC. A series of distinguished practitioners, Commission officials, and academics from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom have contributed thought-provoking papers that have lasting value to other practitioners, Community officials, academics, and students. The papers are the revised and updated results of a Conference held in Groningen to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Professor M.R. Mok's tenure of the Chair of the Law of Economic Regulation at the University of Groningen.

                    Book Description

The idea of legal competition as a decentralized market process of law provision in which legal clubs compete, has earned an indisputable legitimacy among economists. This book presents a debate concerning the merits of and conditions for a competitive provision of law, with a special focus on institutions in Europe.

The authors analyze three major aspects of the competitive provision of legal rules. First, the conditions under which citizens and firms arbitrate between the different legal orders are investigated. The book then goes on to analyze the supply aspect of the legal market and the consequences of the competitive pressures on the behavior of the lawmakers. Finally, the conditions under which the State may efficiently control the process of law provision are discussed and justifications to its intervention are presented.

A comprehensive study encompassing both private and public law, and applied and theoretical issues, this book will provide lively discussion and up-to-date research for students of law and economics, and an authoritative source of information for practitioners in the field of legal competition - in particular those specializing in European issues.
