      Book Description

Charles Garnier (Paris 1825-1898). The eclectism of this French architect enables him to be placed within the Second Imperial style. His works can be considered as archetypal examples of Neo-classical Renaissance and baroque architecture. His greatest undertaking was the Opera House in Paris (1861-1875), highly relevant for the subsequent development of architecture in the nineteenth century. The overall effect is harmonious but different styles and decorations are combined together through sculptures, frescos and marble. In 1900 the opera was moved to the Bastille and since then Garnier's building has been home to the Paris Opera Ballet Company. The fame of this construction was such that it even managed to push other noteworthy works, such as the Vila Eilenroc (1867), into the background.

            Book Description

Charles Garnier's Paris Opera (1861-1875) is one of the largest, most flamboyant, and most expensive monuments commissioned by the Second Empire of Napoleon III. For years scholars have recognized that the Opera is key to any understanding of nineteenth-century French architecture, yet questions of style that have surrounded the Opera since its inception have remained unresolved. By making systematic use of the mostly unpublished Opera Archive, Mead fills in the missing links to previous investigations and unlocks the significance of this seminal masterpiece.

Mead approaches the Opera through Garnier's life. In a careful analysis of the Second Empire's intellectual climate, he provides a new interpretation of the genesis of the Opera's style. Mead reconstructs in detail the social, political, intellectual, professional, and industrial circumstances of Garnier's career as they were expressed through the Opera's design and construction. He shows that with the Paris Opera, Charles Garnier revived French classicism by insisting on its necessary evolution to a modern expression of its time, and on its empathetic origins in the rich complexities of human experience.

Christopher Mead is Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of New Mexico.

5 out of 5 stars The most complete source of the Paris Opera House.......2000-11-24

I purchased this book quite some time ago as a result of my 'Phantom obsession.' Although I found it expensive at first, it has such a wealth of information that you will find something new each time you look at it. It even talks about the underground lake and how it was dealt with during construction, all the decorations and tons more. Definitely the best book in my collection! I also just finished a research paper on this treatise of architecture, so if you want to see an overview of the book, you can read it at http://www.GrandFoyer.com

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful project for placecards.......2006-02-20

There are two nice things about the Calligraphy Masterclass. One is a set of very good nibs, including square nibs. There are ink cartridges for fountain pens, but you'll probably want to use the regular pen for the nibs that is included and buy a bottle of India Ink. For obvious reasons, one could not put a full bottle of ink in with this book.

The other thing I like about this book is the project for embossed leaf invitation/place cards. They are absolutely wonderful and worth the book alone. If you are planning a wedding or anniversary party, these elegant place cards would work exceptionally well. In addition to the beautiful place cards is a project for letterhead and example of a homemade wine label, a 50th anniversary card and a greeting card. There are practice examples and practice pages, which you could photocopy to make more of. Excellent value.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible -- Buy "The Complete Calligraphy Set" instead.......2003-08-03

This set is just terrible. The box has the lie that this set includes everything you need. In fact, it contains no calligraphy ink, and the ink that is in the box is packaged in fountain pen cartridges. That there is no fountain pen in the bos makes this fact is bizare. Moreover, the text book is useless.

BUY READER'S DIGEST'S "THE COMPLETE CALLIGRAPHY SET" INSTEAD. It is an excellent work, does have everything you need, and has much more information in the text book.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible misleading book.......2002-12-31

My wife received this as a Christms gift. We were both confused as to the mish-mash of materials and instructions provided, especially since on the cover it states "A Complete Guide to Calligraphy with Ten Stylish Projects" and on the back is assures the buyer that the kit comes with "everything you will need...." Not only is everything NOT included, the instructions themselves are sparse and very badly written. It reminds me of a Mad Magazine take on "how to draw comics" where the first few panels show blobs and the last a finished, highly detailed piece.

Other examples of bad writing: while a few pages show the angle to use from above, none show the elevation. Most amazingly, in several places and projects, the author shows a few letters from the example stylized scripts, she doesn't show the entire alphabet.

                    2 out of 5 stars Missing Material.............2002-11-13

I was rather excited to have received this calligraphy set for Christmas but was surprised to find that I could not use it immediately. The book comes with a nice inking pen, but no pot of ink. It does come with ink cartridges but no fountain pen. It's ridiculous. The book is pretty to look at but as the other reviewer mentioned, little instruction is given on the art of calligraphy.
The missing pieces of material is quite disappointing. I was really looking forward to trying my new calligraphy set.
Not a good way to please your customers.

                    3 out of 5 stars Nice, but..........2001-07-25

I can't say that's not a nice book: good examples and very nice works, a careful edition. But the subtitle Masterclass is not true. I bought expecting an advanced guide for my projects and what I found was beginer's lessons. But what really made me happy was the material (that was not even cited when I bought), very good pens, ink(for fountain pen, that's not included...) and a gold foil. The other problem is that there's almost any instructions about the material, especially the bamboo pen shaping.

Leading European fashion photographer Hanspeter Schneider goes behind the scenes of Rio's notorious sex industry.

Blurring reportage and contrivance his images are dangerous, raw and at times shocking yet they allude to the glamour of the catwalk and the safety of the studio. The shots remain real but at the same time are posed, the subjects are prostitutes but, seen here, they are models.

                        Book Description

This is the first book to give a comprehensive overview of the new field of housing microfinance practice worldwide. The expert contributors provide guidance to practitioners and policymakers on what works best, and look at the applicability of developing-world experience for housing microfinance in the United States.

The book takes experience from the separate fields of housing policy and microfinance and explores what each can learn from the other. The contributors review the important issues for microfinance institutions which are considering expanding into housing, or providers of conventional housing loans who seek to offer products for poor clients who lack collateral, or a regular salary income.

Although there are differences between the low-income housing market in the United States and in developing countries, there are lessons from international experience that can be applied domestically, and the book also explores this topic.

With lessons for both housing policymakers and housing microfinance practitioners, this will be a crucial book in putting the new field of housing microfinance on the map.

                          Product Description

This Report examines the challenges of financing urban shelter development, focusing on the shelter needs of the poor and within the overall context of the United Nations Millennium Development target on slums. By 2030, an additional 3 billion people or about 40% of the current world’s population will need housing. If adequate financial resources are not invested in the development of urban shelter and requisite services, this additional population will also be trapped in urban poverty, deplorable housing conditions, poor health and low productivity, thus further compounding the enormous slum challenge that exists today.

                            Book Description

As England's Industrial Revolution started the process of urbanization that has since characterized development throughout the world, a poet worried about the "dark satanic mills" that were such a fundamental part of this revolution. However, despite his misgivings, he also suggested that it was necessary for societies to arm themselves with "chariots of fire" and other weapons so that they could master this process.

In a somewhat more prosaic poetic vein World Bank President Robert McNamara launched the bank's shelter assistance programs saying that 'If cities do not begin to deal more constructively with poverty, poverty may begin to deal more destructively with cities.' These concerns would appear to have even more resonance today as the population of cities in developing countries increasing by unprecedented levels of more than 1 billion people per year for the next 15 years. This magnitude suggests the scale of the increase in the investment in shelter needed to meet the needs of this growing population.

                                Book Description

                                * Documents the radical changes in methodology of one Northern NGO (Homeless International) over twenty years of providing support to organizations of the urban poor across the globe.

                                * Present extensive excerpts from conventional small-scale grants to collaborative design of new financial products – in so that other agencies may build on the lessons learned.

As poverty becomes increasingly concentrated in urban areas of the developing world, the need to access new sources of finance for slum upgrading, resettlement, and infrastructure provision becomes correspondingly acute. This is particularly so for organizations of the urban poor as they enter into collaborative arrangements with the state, and with the private sector.

Starting from conventional small-scale grant giving to nascent NGOs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, Homeless International has broadened its methodology to include collaborative design of new financial products including an international guarantee fund that provides loan capital for bridge financing large-scale developments which are prioritised, designed, and managed by organizations of the urban poor.

This book is packed with illustrations of lessons learned by Homeless International so that others can build on these in order to create a wider collaborative capacity to bridge finance gaps.

                                    Book Description

The book analyzes housing finance policy in developing countries at a time of unprecedented change in such systems. It brings together and updates journal articles originally written as background papers and sector studies for the World Bank's involvement in these changes. It focuses on the implications for housing finance of two historic developments: the most turbulent period in world financial history and the subsequent widespread liberalization of financial systems; and the recognition of the failure of centrally-planned economies.

How should economic and social theory accommodate empirical facts about physical destitution, and how should governments respond to famines and hunger? This interdisciplinary book focuses on these and other questions about physical well-being. Partha Dasgupta begins his approach from the
perspective of development economics. He then broadens his discussion to include philosophical work and empirical data on resource allocation, nutrition science, and anthropology. Comprehensive in its coverage of poverty, its causes, and remedies, this seminal work is essential to scholars and
professionals in moral and political philosophy, anthropology, nutrition science, economic theory, and welfare economics.

Many will probably notice the similarity to "Development as Freedom," the book by '98 Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. Prof. Dasgupta has a very definite philosophical structure to analysing well-being and destitution, and he never loses sight of that. Both Sen and Dasgupta pay a lot of attention to analysing the moral principles of rights and how these can be used to understand well-being. However, I greatly prefer this book to Sen's, because Sen's is a series of lectures and this is a cohesive, well-connected book (545 pp.).

From the principles of rights, and their role in well-being, Dasgupta branches out to the whole universe of development in a refreshingly calm, non-ideological way. Moreover, the bibliography in this book is very good: if you are following the notes in the text, D. points the way to a wide range of intelectual opportunities.
