Book Description
Take a tour through twenty-five modern log homes reborn in the Arts & Crafts tradition, and witness how Craftsman style combines with the latest in log hybrid architecture to create a totally new and unique genre of building in The Arts & Crafts Cabin. In this new title from log building expert Robbin Obomsawin, the rich Arts & Crafts heritage of the late 1800s that rebelled against mass-produced goods and the opulence of the Victorian era melds beautifully with the ideals of log home design and cabin living, where a simple life and appreciation for fine craftsmanship are held in the highest esteem. This new hybrid style incorporates the exquisite workmanship and sophistication that have become hallmarks of Arts & Crafts design with the warmth and comfort of log elements to create homes inspired by nature, creativity, and simple beauty. With one of the industry's premier photographers, Roger Wade, and the log industry's most prolific and respected author, Robbin Obomsawin, The Arts & Crafts Cabin uses spectacular color photography, floor plans, and compelling historical text to showcase how the principles and philosophy of William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Charles and Henry Greene combine with modern artistry to create some of the most exciting residential and recreational architecture being created today. Robbin Obomsawin is the construction manager and general contractor for Beaver Creek Log Homes. Robbin has served as vice president of the International Log Builders Association for Handcrafters and is the author of Small Log Homes, Best Log Home Plans, The Not So Log Cabin, and Log Cabin Classics. She lives in New York State.
Customer Reviews:
A lovely book with a few good ideas.......2007-07-23
I purchased The Arts & Crafts Cabin for my wife for Christmas, as we are building a new home this year. The book is chock-full of beautiful photographs by Roger Wade, who is the preeminent "log cabin" photographer, whose work graces most of the timber-frame and log-cabin oriented publications. The text is well-written but not particularly memorable. You buy this book because it looks lovely, and it is a favorite flipper on our coffee-table this summer.
There are a great many more interior images than exterior elevations -- a minor disappointment because we were at least as interested in gleening good ideas for exterior design. This book has many more yellow stickies marking pages than any other in our collection, so that tells you something.
my art glass window is on the front cover sleeve.......2007-01-16
Great photos and alot of great info ; I don't want to blow my own horn , but, toot, toot!!!!
I have two of my stained glass creations in this publication. I was very surprized my work was included in this great book. Thanks to all involved .

Great ideas for building an Arts & Crafts-inspired log or timber framed home.......2006-10-01
This is an incredible book! This book reminded me of my trip to the Canadian Rockies - but not because of the architecture. There, every time I drove around a curve, the scenery was more beautiful than before. The same is true about this book. Every time I turned the page, the photos were more inspiring. And it wasn't just the photos. The book itself captured the spirit of the Arts & Crafts style. The quality of the photos, the layout of the pages, the selection of fonts, even the binding of the book showed craftsman-level attention to detail.
The book begins with the history and concepts of the Arts & Crafts movement and then shows and discusses new interpretations of the philosophy. The next section discusses ideas for incorporating key elements of the style such as sheltered porches, built-ins, and much more.
Note that this book does differ from some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books. Most notably, she does not fully explore a single house in each chapter. You will not find floor plans of the houses discussed - something I missed but that didn't fit this layout. Also, remember this book is titled The Arts & Crafts CABIN. That does not necessarily mean log cabin. There are several examples of log homes but with a stronger focus on log-element homes with more of a timber-frame feel. But many of the ideas can work in a pure log home - at least we hope to incorporate many of them in our log home.
Misleading but beautiful.......2006-08-17
Being familiar with some of Robbin Obomsawin's other books, I bought this book expecting detailed house plans and handcrafted log architecture. After all, it's called "The Arts and Crafts ***Cabin***," right? And the picture on the front of that beautiful stained-glass door shows logs, doesn't it?
Well, this book is beautiful. You'll drool over the pictures. but a planbook it's not. And a log-building book it's not. And none of the residences here would qualify as a "cabin," most are opulent estates. There's nary a plan in the entire book. And almost none of the houses shown are built with logs as a primary element. Most are timberframes; many pictures show no log elements at all!
If you want to learn a bit about Arts and Crafts architecture or decorating, you may find some ideas here. But if you are designing a floorplan for a handcrafted log home and want it to have an Arts and Crafts feel, unfortunately, this isn't the right book.
great resource for timberframe and log accent building..........2005-09-14
I liked the quality of the photos. The detail design pictures were especially helpful. I also liked the links to the resources. I would recommend this book to others who have an interest in timberframe and arts & crafts design.
Book Description
Proving that less is more, The Cabin takes this idyllic retreat from mind's eye to reality -- with striking photographs and considerable charm. Simple, even primitive at times, the cabin is not just a roof over our heads, but a treasury of feelings, sensations, and memories. Readers who have no cabin memories very likely have cabin dreams. The Cabin looks at an amazing array of design styles and materials -- from sticks and stones to sheet metal and glass. The book invites readers to think of every cabin as unique, and less a shelter than a way of life. "The cabin is our heart's retreat," write the authors; and what a wonderful place to escape to! 37 inspirational cabins from all over the country are featured with nearly 250 photographs and 50 illustrations, detailed descriptions, site plans, and floor plans.

designing my cabin.......2007-06-27
I bought this book along with a bunch of others when I bought a country home. I liked this one the best-no Architectural Digest rich people cabins that none of us can afford (or even want). This book limits the size of the cabins to a modest 1200 feet or so and focuses on the creativity of the owners. Really interesting uses of space. I have given it as a gift many times and everyone has really liked it
Beautiful Book.......2007-06-03
This is a great book with many terrific photos that will fuel your imagination and inspiration for a future small home which, in my opinion is the wave of the near future. Less is more, and this book shows you how beautiful that can be. I would recommend you leave this book on the coffee table, people always pick it up and enjoy flipping through it.
food for thought.......2006-09-06
In a nutshell, a beautiful book with gorgeous photos and plenty of ideas. In the few days that I've had it, its been used frequently to clarify and illustrate our own ideas about the cabin that we're planning. As far as I'm concerned it has paid for itself already.
Down with McMansions.......2006-07-10
God, this book is so lushly illustrated with cozy spaces and intimate hideaways that you just want to scramble for the hills after one read-through. All the houses in it are deliciously comfy and cozy, illustrating the forgotten principle of 'just enough', all look just big enough,a nd all look terribly inviting and tempting. This book is cabin porn, basically.
Invites repeated browsing.......2006-02-22
I love this book. I keep going back to it for ideas for building a summer sleeping structure for my large back yard. For people who love the outdoors and are drawn to the concept of living structures which invite the outdoors inside and vice versa, this book is full of inspiration. There is something for everyone in this book and you would be hard pressed not to find at least one structure in this book which has you itching to pick up a hammer and a saw.
Book Description
With its overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, fieldstone verandas, open floor plans, and fine woodwork, the bungalow has become a quintessential model of American architecture. A hybrid import from abroad over a century ago, its suitability for country living quickly led to its adoption throughout the United States. However, many modern homes lack the jaunty, distinctive style and attention to detail that characterize older bungalows and mountain houses. This unrivalled classic reveals the designs of thirty-two American architects, including descriptions of materials, siting, sanitation, color, furnishings, and an entire chapter devoted to camps, lodges, and log cabins. More than a lovely expression of old-fashioned charm, these plans can easily be adapted to create a modern vacation home or country cottage.

Book Description
Longing for a home in big, wild country that would keep them passionate and young, Jonathan Johnson and his wife, Amy, set out to build a log cabin on his family’s land in a remote and beautiful corner of Idaho. But what began as a doable dream for the two of them suddenly looks quite different when, on their first morning in the cabin—without electricity, a telephone, running water, or real windows—the couple learn that Amy is pregnant.
In this lyrical and intimate chronicle of making a home the hard way, Johnson describes the competing joys and anxieties of preparing for fatherhood in a setting as challenging as it is promising: a paradise of mythic snowfalls and warming wood stoves and elk tracks at the front door, but also a place where vision, and even struggle and compromise, are not always enough. Hannah and the Mountain tells a rare and delicate story of two people exploring the unmapped territories of loss and grief and finding solace and grace in the mountains. It offers the reader an unforgettable portrait of a couple growing up, learning nature’s hard and beautiful lessons, and discovering a love of place and each other strong and wild enough to renew them and be carried into the future

Jonathan Johnson, Hannah and the Mountain
reviewed by Jacob Powers
It is difficult to find a text that gives balance between nature and family. Granted, each genre holds its own, but to find a book that discusses both the love of the wilderness and the love of family is rare. Fortunately Jonathan Johnson, with his memoir Hannah and the Mountain, has successfully done just that.
Johnson's narrative at first focuses on his goal to renovate a cabin owned by his extended family for over forty years for him and his wife, Amy, in the Idaho wilderness: "[We] came to the mountains because our adult lives were rushing toward us and we wanted to go out and meet those lives in a place that would keep us young and free and filled with passion. After years of school we were ready to settle into the long story of home." This feeling of home quickly takes a step forward when Jonathan and Amy discover that she is pregnant with their first child. Now, with the combination of extensive renovations and the limited amounts of resources to do so, the intent to form a home suitable to raise his future child in quickly takes off. Yet Johnson does it all in hope-hope that his firstborn will experience the beauty and awe of the wilderness that he and his wife adore.
Tragedy, however, ensues as the memoir (which reads a lot like a novel) quickly disintegrates from its optimistic dreams into the harsh realities of a complicated pregnancy. The baby is carried too low, putting pressure on and stretching the lower uterus, threatening a premature birth: "Amy'd been having pains low in her abdomen all along...the hope was that the pains were the result of these problems, not the contractions that could be causing the problems." Yet all hope is not lost as Johnson guides the reader through his and his wife's pains and grief towards a strong anticipation that they will be able to tame their dreams again: "We've got our little cabin on land I've come to think of as an extension of my own body...that will be more than enough for Amy and me to build a life on. I will not create sorrows in a life where sorrows find me on their own."
While most of the themes and settings in the book take place Idaho, many are reflective of Michigan's landscape as well. Johnson writes of Marquette where both he and Amy grew up several times throughout. There are also moments where he and his wife consider where they would rather have the baby-in their own formed home in the Idaho wilderness, or back in Marquette where their parents and past lives are. But what stands out the most is Johnson's connection with a past friend and writer, Mac, who experiences the death of his sixteen year old son when he died in an accident on the icy roads just outside of Marquette. It is in this moment of the book where Johnson connects his own experiences of a possible future father with the tragic loss that Mac experiences: "Odds are that being a father will forever be like walking on the thick crust on top of four feet of snow in the cold, February sunlight." As the memoir progresses, it becomes apparent that the love and fear of family cannot simply be contained within the borders of our own state or within Johnson's past life. Michigan may be where Johnson grew up, but Idaho is where his home and life is now.
Although the story is one that has been heard before, it is Johnson's heavy experience in the poetic realm and ability to capture emotions of joy and distress that makes Hannah and the Mountain stand out amongst others. With an interwoven reflection between the lyrical love of the wilderness with the preferable avoidance of the busy city life, Johnson paints a landscape that is powerful and unforgettable. Yet what lies in the foreground of Johnson's affection of the wilderness is that irreplaceable love and desire he has for family itself-"If any of us are ever saved, whatever that might mean, we aren't saved by the stories we create for ourselves to inhabit; we are saved by our loves." For Johnson, it is the family that makes the life; the rest is replaceable.

The evocative prose of a poet.......2005-12-06
Jonathan Johnston writes with the evocative prose of a poet. He tells the story of his path toward fatherhood and toward the fulfillment of his childhood dream of building his family's cabin home in the mountains of Idaho. He does so with passion and care. The reader sees clearly the autumn twilight as it fills the fields and sees the full moonlight come spilling through the windows of the cabin. On these beautifully written pages the reader learns of the profound love Johathan and his wife Amy share. It is a book I shall love giving so others might come to know this incredible author.
Beautiful, Insightful, Moving Memoir .......2005-04-08
I am a former student of Jonathan's...in fact, I am one of the students who sat on the lawns of the Western PA College during his Nature in Lit class that he mentions in the book. That was six years ago and I have been a fan of his work ever since.
This memoir is beautifuly crafted as only a poet-turned-prose writer could do. He weaves the story of building his home, following his dreams, and starting a family in a touching and compelling fashion. The reader relates to the joy and hope of the young couple and feel their pain in times of trouble. This is not a memoir that serves to glorify the life of the author, but rather, it serves as a connection to each of us who are in pursuit of identity (be it individual or family or whatever else)and who are all on the journey through life.
This is a beautiful work. I have never cried so hard over the pages of a book before. Johnson has been couragous and honest in his prose which makes it such an inspiring read.

Book Description
From 1963 until 1972, the young Nobuyoshi Araki obsessively photographed his fellow passengers during his daily commute on the Tokyo subway. Yawning businessmen, women dozing with their legs splayed, kids who mugged for the camera-Araki captured them all candidly on film, without using a viewfinder. Now, over thirty years later, Subway Love brings back to life these vital and various "prisoners" crammed into their subway cars. Included is an interview with Araki, who explains the essence of documentary: "to gaze unflinchingly at a thing for a long time."
The brilliant and controversial
Nobuyoshi Araki is one of Japan's leading photographers.

Riding the rails, tired and alive.......2006-05-06
Pick up a book called "Subway Love" by Nobuyoshi Araki, a photographer/pornographer equally notorious for both his documentation of the Kabuki red light district in the book "Tokyo Lucky Hole" as well as his several arrests for breaking Japanese obscenity laws, and you would rightfully expect something salacious, titillating or even downright dirty. Subway sex, illicit gropings, panty shots captured with ninja-like stealth from oblivious victims, ...the mind boggles at what this master of the underground sex scene might come up with in darkened corners of late night Ginza Line runs.
But this is not that Araki. At the time, 1963-1972, Araki was working for an advertising agency, Dentsu, and still finding his voice as an artist. Riding the subway to and from work, he became obsessed with photographing his fellow passengers, partly to kill time and partly because of the empathy he felt with them, all taking the weary daily ride together.
The photographs in "Subway Love" are raw. Printed directly from the contact sheet, there is a marvelous intimacy created between camera and subject, and then between subject and viewer. Araki refused to use his camera's viewfinder for the portraits, wanting them to come off the same way the eye does when people watching, random and uncentered. In a way, as mentioned in the interview following the photographs, this was his attempt to capture filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu's poetry of everyday life. Many of the shots are from low angles, emulating Ozu's tatami-level camera.
Raw the photographs may be, but the subjects themselves are reverenced and always treated with the respect that daily life deserves. Araki was sure not to publish embarrassing photographs, no nose picking or sleeping office girls with their legs splayed wide. He called this collection "Subway Love" because he loved them all, these warriors of the working day, and wanted to show them as "individuals, not symbols." There are a thousand faces here, some happy, some sad, some tired, some lively. But each and every one of them is a human being, and probably familiar to all of us who at one time or another have made the journey home on the subway.
Customer Reviews:
Marvelous,.......2006-07-29
I can't remember where I got this paperback book but it was in 1987, just like the other reviewer. I agree with him about the interesting characters in this book. I was amazed with the homeless woman who would register at nice hotels, then toss her clothing out the window. When the manager or private cop would come to evict her for not paying her bill, she'd answer the door in the nude and the cop or manager would be afraid to throw her out without clothing!! Quite a scam. I wish this book was back in publication, I would enjoy reading it again.
NEVER A DULL MOMENT.......2006-02-17
When I moved into an apartment in 1987, a copy of this book had been left behind by the previous tenant. It is the story of a wealthy banker in the 1950's who lost everything and lived on the streets of New York. To make a long story short, the "characters" he ran into and the stories they have to tell are utterly fascinating. And in the end, the main character who tells these stories (the banker) has an extremely unbelieveable ending to his alcohol and whatever other problems. A SLEEPER!!!!!

Poetic Thoughts.......2005-04-17
The influence, whether it is visual or spiritual, to inspire someone to compose poetry is fascinating. URBAN LOVE THOUGHTS ON THE SUBWAY by Vaughn A. Young is one example of visual influence. Riding the New York subway daily among a diverse group of beautiful women was Mr. Young's inspiration to annotate notes that lead to his book of poems.
It is a neat, hand-printed text collection that speaks with a sensual flow and rhythm. I compared each selection to a beating drum where emphasis is indigenous to each word. The poem "Retirement" showcases Mr. Young's rhythmic style and highlights the depth of his emotions in this final ode to a ladies man who was retiring from the game. It was unique and brought a smile to my face.
Although URBAN LOVE THOUGHTS ON THE SUBWAY describes itself as a sensual and erotic book of poems, a few were not. I also felt that a couple of the selections were repetitive in substance even though each poem had a different theme. Mr. Young's book has great originality, however, it still didn't fully hit the erotic nerve and offer the fulfillment I expected.
Overall, URBAN LOVE THOUGHTS ON THE SUBWAY by Vaughn A. Young,
is a well-composed book of poems that is entertaining as you travel to your destination, whether riding the subway, train or plane. It's a nice poetic read.

Book Description
Since Friedrich Hayek's The Use of Knowledge in Society, much has been written about the role of prices as a means of communicating information. Information economics emphasizes that prices can be sources from which agents infer information, and means by which they transmit information. The growing interest in this area has led to a greater stress on the role of prices, and this book meets the need for a comprehensive survey of the field.
Prices and Knowledge analyzes different theoretical approaches to the role of prices in situations of imperfect information. The "informational efficiency" approach of Grossman and Stiglitz and the "bounded rationality theory" of Nelson and Simon are shown to be useful, but incomplete, in their consideration of situations of disequilibrium. Esteban Thomsen, by contrast, adopts a market process perspective and develops a modern Austrian approach. He views market activity as a continuing process of change rather than as a fully adjusted state. Because agents are acting in conditions of uncertainty or ignorance, prices are of paramount importance. Disequilibrium prices can become sources of profit opportunities that stimulate entrepreneurial discovery and the exploitation of previously unnoticed opportunities.
Customer Reviews:
This is a Great Book.......1998-04-02
If you are all interested in the intersections between transactions costs economics, rational expectations, information economics and bounded rationality, this book is an excellent and explicit unravelling of the mysteries of how these concepts are intertwined. An excellent mind.
