Between globalization, deindustrialization, suburbanization, the transition to post-Socialism, high unemployment and, in some cases, wider national population losses, the phenomenon is growing. Shrinking Cities Volume 1: International Research, a publication of the Germany-based Shrinking Cities initiative, examines this phenomenon's causes and dynamics on an international level for the first time, exploring examples including Manchester and Liverpool, Detroit, Russia's Ivanovo, and Germany's Halle and Leipzig. Each site represents a specific issue: in Detroit, the consequences of suburbanization; in Manchester and Liverpool, deindustrialization; in Ivanovo, post-socialism; while in the Halle and Leipzig region several of these factors come together. Candid and Fair.......2001-08-02

The late Elder Henry D. Moyle's family commissioned the prominent LDS historian Richard D. Poll to write this biography of the influential church leader. It remained unpublished for over a decade until after Poll's death. Poll wrote it on the principle of "warts and all." The result is a fair and carefully balanced portrait that depicts the man's strengths and weaknesses. Moyle was a hard-charging, energetic man who was full of faith. He was greatly responsible for the church's explosive growth after World War II. Poll vividly captures this crucial moment in church history. But Moyle perhaps pushed too hard in some ways: the church was brought close to insolvency by Moyle's enthusiasm for new buildings. The pressure to bring in converts to help fund all this expansion led to some excesses in the missionary program--the famous "baseball baptisms", where young people became members after only the most cursory contact with the church's athletic programs. Eventually Moyle was relieved of much of his responsibility and died soon after, some said of a broken heart. His optimism was typical of his culture and times. Poll's book tells with sympathy and honesty this important edpisode in our history.

Buy This Book.......2000-10-12

First of all, "Chip" Delaney was not the author of this book, although he did write a nifty introduction relating science fiction to performance art. Barbara London's essay and chapters on the eight artists in the NYMOMA show are outstanding! Anyone curious about performance art AND any serious student of this vital topic would do well to consult this book. Each chapter focuses on an artist in this field, showing beautiful color and black & white photos of performance pieces; also included are extensive chronologies of their past shows and selective bibliographies about their work. This book is a "must" for any serious artist and art library.

Good book for newbees.......2006-11-03

Nice book wish I had read this first. If you are new to macro or just shooting bugs this book should help you out a lot I did get a few things out of this book I would recommend it for anybody just starting out.

Getting Close to Insects.......2004-11-29

One would think that with all of the changes that have occurred on the technical side of photography in the last 10 years, a book on macrophotography published 10 years ago would be out of date. Well this one isn't, and if one keeps a few concepts in mind, is almost as good as anything one can find on the subject of close-ups of insects.

After a brief introduction, the author promptly launches into a discussion of the equipment that one needs to take insect close-ups. Luckily, TTL flash, one of the boons of modern technology, was already on the scene, so the equipment discussion, whether of macro lenses, close-up diopters or tripods, is still applicable. The only thing that has changed is the availability of digital media. As long as one remembers that digital photographers have the ability to change the ISO speed of the media with each shot, and that exposure may be easily checked with histograms and "blinkies" there is no cause for concern here.

Although the author's excellent pictures are used throughout the book, the second section is a portfolio of the author's insect and spider pictures, where he describes the circumstances surrounding the taking of each picture in detail.

In the third part of the book the author discusses what he calls "Photographics", that is, the techniques to be applied for the use of the equipment which he previously discussed. He dwells on exposure and tonality and talks about the differing requirements for using three types of light: natural light, fill flash and total flash.

Finally West talks about finding subjects, including the ethics involved in photographing insects.

The author's words are simple, clear and concise and if you follow his instructions you should be able to take good pictures of insects. I have only a few quibbles.

I believe that his discussion of total flash photography could have emphasized the importance of making sure that the flash was far stronger than any ambient light to prevent blurred images. Thus, even though all of the pictures in the book of the author taking photographs in the field show his flash on a mount that places the flash as far forward as the front of the camera lens, he did not make it clear that this was to help overcome the ambient light or tell you in the text that this position was desirable. Similarly he could have suggested that using a low ISO with flash also helps to reach this same objective.

I was also disappointed that there was no significant discussion of taking pictures of flying insects, since this is far more difficult than taking pictures of stationary insects, and yields far more exciting pictures.

John Shaw, in his "Nature Photography Field Guide" covers the same ground as this book, although with less emphasis on insects and more instruction on other aspects of outdoor photography. If you really want to see terrific insect macrophotography, see John Brackenbury's "Close Up". There's not much instruction there, but lots of inspiration.

West's book is a fine guide for insect macrophotography, with excellent pictures to serve as an example.

Insects & Spiders; beautiful.......2003-07-09

Yes, I have bought a book "How to photograph Insects & Spiders" by Larry West with Julie Ridl. The mentioned book includes five parts which spread across main problems concerning the macro-photography. The authors write about special accessories for this photo-category and they show their photo-macro gears inclusive the special tools.How use a tripod, tripod heads, an extension rings, multipliers and flash. The book describes a negative/positive film differences and shortly look at the E-6 and K-14 developing process. Larry West has opened own Portfolio with many, many beautiful color photohraphies (mailny spiders - Misumena vatia, Geolycosa turricola, Lycosa gulosa,...). He describes a tonal tricks for take a shot on slides. Where to meter a background and meter some white part photography field. The book includes a magnification table for Area Covered, Subjects and Equipment.
I can recommend this book for beginners even for pros too (Rene Novak, studio er67 - prague).

The secrets are very simple.......2000-05-16

Thanks to West for an extra-ordinary work and interest to publish this book of his experience. The depth of coverage was excellent! This is a sort of bible for amateur and pros for taking insects. Simple instruments (cost effective) suggested by West. I could afford to buy the recommended accessories next day of receiving the book, locally. Believe me, I have gone through the book (about 175 pages) in one breath, overnight, sacrificing my sleep for the excellent creatures of God. I rate this 5 star, because you need to estimate my review only after you read the book.

Great Advice from a Great Photographer.......2000-05-16

One thing I love about this book is that West talks about techniques such as stacking supplementaries that John Shaw advises against. It just shows there is more than one way to achieve your desired magnification. West does a great job of outlining subjects such as exposure and equipment, both of which are vital in this type of photography. However, he also provides in depth coverage on his approach to finding and working with insects in the field-a topic of at least equal importance. He backs up his advice with superb examples of his work. A great book that pleasantly surprised me!

This textbook brings together the main developments in non-cooperative game theory from the 1950s to the present. After opening with a number of lively examples, Ritzberger starts by considering the theory of decisions under uncertainty. He then turns to representations of games, first introducing extensive forms and then normal forms. The remainder of the text is devoted to solution theory, going from basic solution concepts like rationalizable strategies, Nash equilibrium, and correlated equilibrium to refinements of Nash equilibrium. Foundations of Non-Cooperative Game Theory covers all material relevant for a first graduate course in game theory, plus some issues only touched on by other texts. In particular, this book contains an in-depth discussion of perfect recall and related concepts, including a proof of Kuhn's theorem. It provides an introduction to the Thompson transformations for extensive forms, and a section on the reflection of extensive form structures in normal form games. In addition to the standard material on basic solution concepts, strategy subsets closed under rational behavior are covered, as well as fixed sets under the best-reply correspondence. Refinements of Nash equilibrium driven by backwards induction in the extensive form or by strategy trembles in the normal form are presented, and strategic stability, the geometry of the Nash equilibrium correspondence, and index theory for Nash equilibrium components are discussed in depth. Ritzberger provides numerous examples and exercises to aid the reader's understanding, most of which are motivated by applications of game theory in economics. While advanced mathematical machinery is used on occasions, an effort has been made to include as many explanations for formal concepts as possible, making this text an invaluable tool for teachers, students, and researchers of microeconomics and game theory.
