Great for study if you are graphically oriented.......1998-12-15
This book was used in a upper-level statics class at the University of Oregon Architecture Department. I found this book very useful in understanding concepts dealing with structures. The book is organized very well and the figures are very helpful in their explainations. The methods that they use to direct the reader through their process are relatively clear and concise.
In a book like this it would be really helpful if the mathmatical elements which tend to be more accurate were paired with the problems and exercises at the end of the chapters. When dealing with statics, classes are taught with a mathmatical emphasis and being able to link the two would benefit the student.

cy twombly at age 74 (?) continues to produce some of the most essential painting of modern times. his roots in early american absraction and his life since 1957 in classical rural italy have combined to create a most unique art. i only wish that the controversial 'commodus' series of 1963 was revisited and published in an affordable volume. any book on twombly that you can find in print, is worth the price. don't hesitate to visit the museum in houston, texas (can you belive it?) that is dedicated to his work.

His Approach Works for Me.......2004-12-15
The Visual Quick Starte Guides are just about the fastest way to get started on using a software package around. As stated from the title, this is a highly illustrated book that uses tons of screen shots to get you started using a software package.
In this case the package is iPhoto and it's written by a master writer. Because of the large number of illustrations in the book, it is very fast to go through. (My only problem is when I click on something wrong, my screens don't look like his, and then have to backtrack and find my error.) The easy visual approach works well for me.
If you're a beginner to iPhoto, this book will help you get it up and doing what you want in a very short time. The next step is to do more, say up to the intermediate level, and all that takes is that you go further into the book.
The other surprising thing about this book is the way it's organized. Most tutorial books are just that. You follow the tutorial through and then go do things. These books are then useless as a reference book. This one is different. Each task, almost each page, is organized with a headline of what you're going to do on that page. Then the index has an entry that points to the right page. For instance if you're going through the book there's a chapter on Sharing Photos. There's a page on Printing Greeting Cards. Learning about sharing photos will send you through the page on Printing Greeting Cards. But if you forget that, going to the index will give you an entry on Printing Greeting Cards that will send you to that page which is complete enough to enable you to get the greeting cards without having to go through the whole chapter.

Excellent resource.......2004-09-26
Before picking this book up, I'd all but given up on iPhoto. I found it a bit too simple and way to encumbering of my system. But this book really changed my perspective. Well, this book and the fact that I needed a better way to organize my pictures on my Mac than simply having massive folders of pictures.
The book is very accessible and although I thought I was familiar with the program, it opened a lot of new doors and taught me a lot I didn't know. It also provided resources for other programs that work well with iPhoto and how to connect iPhoto to Photoshop (or any digital image editor) so I can do more advanced editing outside of iPhoto.
I think most important for me was learning that I didn't need to have my photos all in one library - that I could use a separate program like the iPhoto Library Manager to make separate, context specific, libraries. This was amazing, as the more photos in a library, the more encumbering it can be on your system.
Without a doubt, I find this to be one of the best and simple books out there covering iPhoto. I highly recommend it!

book was wonderful, i am looking for a crankshaft book detailing ed's visit to the national world war two memorial in washington, d.c.
the only suggestion i have is please put some packing inside. the box had been so horribly smashed that the carrier had labeled the box as having been destroyed. why my book didn't fall out defies logic.

Do you like old men?.......2007-09-05
Crankshaft is the oldest, meanest, bus driver this side of the planet. No, really, they can see the traffic problems he causes from space. He is insulting, he runs over mailboxes and tries to outrun the kids he should be picking up.
But this strip also deals with the issues of family, the generation gap, Alzheimers and the changing world. Sometimes touching, sometimes sad and most of the time very, very funny.

I bought this book as a gift. It is wonderful! Crankshaft is one of our favorite comic strips. We subscribe to two newspapers mainly for the comics.

THe wonderful thing about Ed crankshaft is that almost all of us know someone just like him. Someone who seems to be in a perpetually crabby mood and makes sure everyone around him knows it. But at his core Ed has a heart of gold. Ed's surrounded by his family members including his daughters and their families and it all leads to situations that we all encounter in every day life and these kind of family funny strips like Crankshaft, Drabble, Foxtrot and For Better Or Worse have always been preffered to me over strips involving funny animal types. Crankshaft is a strip that we can all relate to. Funny, witty, cantankerous but filled with warmth.

I recently came across Crankshaft as it's printed in newspapers in California, rather than in my hometown. I absolutely love the comic strip, so I quickly got this. This book is excellent. I was surprised as it was published this year, but the strips in the book were created about ten years ago. The Crankshaft comic strips are similar to Lynn Johnston's For Better or For Worse, as both strips show real-life situations and stories, while the family grows along with us. The Alzheimer story with two people associated with the Crankshaft family is very touching. All in all, it's a great book, and I absolutely loved it.

My husband and I love Crankshaft! It may be because I teach and can identify with the topic or because my husband is a curmudgeon in training. Whatever the reason, Crankshaft tickles our funnybones. Our local paper doesn't get him, so we have to depend on collections--does anyone know if there'll be another one soon??
Incomplete Crankshaft completely enjoyable.......1999-05-10
It's a shame that this excellent strip isn't reprinted in its entirety in this collection. At times, it appears only one day's continuity is presented in a story arc that originally went on for a number of days. In future, it is to be hoped these collections will be complete - for Crankshaft is certainly worth it - as I'm sure Ed himself would tell you in no uncertain terms!

This is a book with deals with the trauma of Alzheimer's. With very gentle humor and delightful artwork, Tom Batiuk gives hope and comfort to all who deal with this dreaded disease, both as victims and as caregivers. I applaud his efforts in bringing this subject "mainline" in a caring , informative manner.

Don't Waste Your Money!.......2005-11-14
Nothing even remotely close in this book related to the title,...doesn't show you how to modify much of anything, if anything at all,...even has some incorrect information on it, talking about gas ported pistons, his explanation is totally wrong,...says the reason holes are drilled in the piston top behind the ring is to relieve gas pressure, when in fact you drill holes in the piston top to create pressure behind the ring to increase the sealing pressure. Common sense would tell you there is more pressure on top of a piston than behind the ring to begin with. I would give this book a 1/2 or zero star, but that rating is not available.

Very disappointing. Expounds at length on crankshaft and piston theory and little on rod theory. Gives theoretical explanation with few examples of real world engines. Duplicates info on teardown, cleaning, preparation, and buildup available from other [better] sources. Very little on how to implement the few mods mentioned. No mention of how to choose a modified rod length; one paragraph on the benefit of lengthening rods. poor parts selection info; few recommendations. This book represents part of a total book on complete engine rebuild while leaving much to be desired. Useful only if it is your only source of engine info. As a book on how to modify pistons, rods and cranshafts it falls short. For instance, "How to Build and Modify Ford 60 degree V-6 Engines" offers equal info to this book plus much more on how to modify pistons, rods and crankshafts, not to mention oil pumps, heads, valve train, intakes and exhaust.

With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "engine crankshafts for internal combustion engines excluding aircraft and gasoline automotive engines and gas turbines" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.
