Book Description
This book provides unique step-by-step guidance to producing a high quality, effective poster for display at a scientific meeting. It aims to give young or inexperienced scientists the extra confidence and encouragement to start contributing poster presentations to scientific meetings, and enthuse experienced poster presenters to continue to improve upon their presentations, and benefit more from the overall experience.
Chapters 1-4 are concerned with the purpose of posters: the pros and cons of poster presentations and how to take advantage of the opportunities they present. Chapters 5-9 cover aspects of what to include: how best to present text and data, and the use of colour in the overall format and design of the poster. Chapters 10-11 deal with actual construction: how to produce posters in a variety of styles and formats, as well as general advice on paper characteristics, drawing aids, adhesives, and cutting equipment. Chapters 12-13 are a guide to transporting the poster to the meeting, and presenting it at the poster session, and should take some of the mystique out of creating the `right' image to the people that matter. Chapter 14 gives guidance on hosting poster sessions and avoiding the various pitfalls. Chapter 15 provides an opportunity to critically review some examples of posters presented at international scientific meetings. This book provides concise, practical guidance on all aspects of production and presentation of scientific posters. It alerts the poster presenter to the various pitfalls and how best to avoid them, and to the many opportunities that may be capitalised upon.

Good, but could be better........2001-09-25
Gosling's book is thorough, but not complete. He does a good job of presenting and discussing the basics of scientific poster presentations: from definitions to composition. However, the book would be considerably better if there were a chapter dedicated to software and computer generated methods of creating poster presentations. The ommission of this leaves the book a decade behind. Still, for the areas that he covers, it is a useful guide and I recommended it for both scientists and students.
Scientific Posters made Easy.......2000-06-16
This is an excellant book. Contains lots of useful information about the do's and don'ts of making a good scientific poster. A great deal of information about basic layout that is clearly presented. Just what the beginner needs. Even the most experienced graphic designer would find this material useful. Towards the back of the book is a chapter on "Common Poster Design Blunders". This chapter contains many critique's of both badly designed posters and well designed posters. It is always good to see real eaxmples.

The French Renaissance of the 12th Century........2006-05-18
Before the famous Italian Renaissance, you could speak of a French Renaissance in the 12th century as far as literature is concerned.
In Southern France there were the Troubadours, singers and poets, often part of the nobility or their entourage. In the North of France you had Chretien de Troyes and his Arthurian romances and the Lais of Marie de France, to name only two of the most important.
The 'Roman de la Rose' was written in the 13th cent. but is probably the most important masterwork of the French Renaissance.
About the person of Marie de France almost nothing is known for certain. Her 'Lais' - stories about romance or adventure - are based upon the popular and folkloristic tales that already existed for centuries in Bretagne - a region close to where the Atlantic meets the North-Sea.
These stories were handed down from generation to generation by story tellers.
The Lais of Marie de France excel by diversity. There are love stories - of course - but also vivid descriptions of
tournaments and even a story about a werewolf.
Marie de France proofs that medieval literature can be entertaining.
Loyalty vs. Arranged Marriage in Marie de France.......2005-12-01
In "Lanval," the knight performs his duties in Arthur's court without fail, but receives no compensation for his loyalty. His attachment to King Arthur's court is questionable, but the lack of reciprocity could be a factor in his falling into love with the fairy and abandoning the kingdom with her. However, Lanval promises a certain loyalty to his lover to keep the relationship a secret, and having two loyalties, one must fail. Lanval chooses love over his king, and rides away with her. One opinion of the ending is that Lanval rides off to death, but perhaps it is only obscurity. However, the ending could also be perceived as triumphant, where he is going off disloyal to his king and happy for it.
Marie de France presents an old man with a young beautiful wife in "Yonec." For seven years she is locked in a tower where she ages and loses her beauty - it is a kind of death to be out of love. And it takes her seven years to abandon the concept of her arranged marriage and begin praying for real love. In this poem, maltreatment justifies the disloyalty to her marital union. In fact, when Yonec beheads his mother's husband, it is considered an "avenging" murder. However, this disloyalty to the husband does not come on a whim; it's a build up of seven years locked in a tower. There is a feeling that the old man is impotent and does not deserve her loyalty.
"Laustic" is another situation of chronic boredom leading to disloyalty, although the wife never actually touches her lover - it is strictly love from afar.
Girl Power, Medieval Style.......2003-11-18
The Lais of Marie de France, aside from being a landmark in the history of literature, are a collection of romantic stories that transcend time. I absolutely love the power and authority Marie de France assigns to her female characters. She juxtaposes the social superiority of men during the late twelfth century with abnormally strong women. The effect can be both compelling and saddening, while always poignant. In the Lai du Lanval, Marie de France creates a larger-than-life female character whose authority and affluence eclipse even King Arthur's grandeur. She essentially tells a love story in reverse, wherein the woman, as the figurative 'white knight',
rescues the man, who plays the role of the 'damsel in distress'. Also, in the Lai du Laustic, she tells the tale of a woman who falls in love with her neighbor and uses the chirping of a nightingale to justify her late night meetings with him. When her husband grows tired of her leaving the bed each
night, he has the nightingale killed so that his wife can sleep. Without the nightingale's chirping, she cannot talk to her love, thus, as an explanation of their bad fortune, she wraps the dead bird and sends it to her lover. This particular lai exposes the sad, immutable predicament of arranged marriages. Marie de France uses clever and subtle ways to describe the complications of love and marriage, which make her writing so uniquely profound.
More specifically, I believe the Penguin Classic's edition of The Lais of Marie de France is an excellent version to study. Compared to other translations I've read, this is the most readable. The translators, Glyn S. Burgess and Keith Busby make it clear in their Translator's note that their aim was to stay as close to the original written word as possible.
Their introduction is equally fascinating, as they explore the possibilities that Marie de France was not actually a woman and that she may not have written all of the lais. I think the introduction is wonderful: the translators examine much of the context surrounding the lais, which creates and entirely new level of depth for the reader.
The actual book, however, seems a little too expensive ($10.95) for the approximate 170 pages it provides (we're talking like 7 cents per page!). But, I must say, it's entirely worth the price.
I think that aside from being the earliest known French female poet, Marie de France gained and maintains so much popularity because she really hit the nail on the head when she described the underbelly of courtly love. The psychology of her characters is so accurate and moving that the fairy-
tale atmosphere can not conceal the messages embedded in the lais. And those messages have become a fixture of popular culture in the 21st century. Sitcoms, films and literature today readily embrace the power of woman. For the modern reader, Marie de France's lais are both a reminder of unhappier
times in social history and a tribute to 'girl-power'. And in my opinion as a college student, there couldn't be a better combination of messages to inspire and to empower a young woman in this day and age.
The Lais of Marie de France.......2003-11-04
The Lais of Marie de France is an entertaining and educational read from the introduction through the end. In this collection, translated here from the original French poems to English prose, Marie de France captures many different facets of King Arthur's court. For example, the Lai of Lanval can be interpreted to be a criticism of King Arthur and his court. The King is compared to a fairy maiden of the Otherworld who is far superior to him both materially and morally. In fact, both Arthur and his Queen are portrayed very negatively, which is not often seen among Arthurian literature. This particular lai also portrays the ideal of courtly love from a very feminine perspective, which is also somewhat unusual among Arthurian literature.
Similarly unusual, the author of this collection is believed to have been a woman. The introduction does a good job of presenting the evidence to support this claim. It then moves on to show connections between the lais and other literature of that period and to try to characterize the lais to some extent. These aims are successfully reached, making the introduction a valuable addition to this edition.
The introduction is not necessary, however, if the lais are being read purely for pleasure. This is easily done, as they contain the ingredients required for a good read: drama, suspense, conflict, and love. Given their content, these lais are entertaining enough to be read purely for enjoyment. I highly recommend this volume to anyone who is interested in either Arthurian love or merely reading a good collection of engaging stories.
The Lais of Marie de France.......2003-10-31
The version of The Lais of Marie de France, translated by Glyn Burgess and Keith Busby, is a substantial collection of lays by Marie de France. Though little is known about the writer, Burgess and Busby provide a thorough presentation of the literary evidence relevant to the question of authorship. Furthermore, they discuss the literary history of previous compilations of Marie's lays, laying a broad foundation for even the amateur reader of medieval literature.
The lays in this collection are themselves rich and thematically diverse. Through the literature, Marie makes sharp criticism of medieval gender roles, examines the character and dynamics of Arthur's court, and challenges the modern view of marriage and love. In the story "Lanval," Marie even makes a start towards defining a woman's beauty. To credit of the translators, her stories are both straightforward and accessible to the modern reader. This collection is highly recommended, and well worth the price.
Book Description
Ancient European stories come to life in the poetry of a now-forgotten medieval woman writer.
Customer Reviews:
As enjoyable today as in the 12th century.......2004-10-02
The Hanning and Ferrante edition of Marie de France's lais is satisfying on two levels. First, the translation and commentary are unsurpassed. Second, the twelve short tales are gems themselves.
Translation of poetry from one modern language to another is difficult, let alone from Anglo-Norman French to modern English. This edition manages it beautifully. Abandoning the original's octosyllabic couplets for free verse, the brevity and simplicity of the verse are preserved.
An introduction sets the lais in place and time. Essentially nothing is known of Marie de France personally, so the introduction centers on the history, culture, and language of the 12th century. Modest footnotes supplement the text, but the strongest editorial contributions are the commentaries that follow each lai. While not completely necessary to an understanding of the stories, which can stand on their own, the commentary definitely enriches one's experience of these old Celtic/Breton tales.
Marie herself offers commentary on the tales as a whole in a Prologue, and frequently with a short statement at the beginning of an individual lai. This multiple framing of story within author commentary within modern commentary gives the reader great richness and depth. Marie's short but dense prologue offers philosophy and theory of writing that is still being reinterpreted.
The lais themselves are self contained and unconnected in plot, but typically involve a chilvaric episode or a courtly love situation, and a complication. The narrative moves quickly. These are not dull and laborious love stories, but adventures. In fact much is made in the critical world of the word "aventure" which translates as chance and luck as well as adventure.
Marie de France is known for using a marvel as a plot device. A marvel is a strange, exotic, sometimes magical, element upon which the story hinges. Milun and his lover, for example, exchange love letters for twenty years - love letters carried secretly between them by a swan.
Marie de France was likely a slyly disruptive force in the masculine court that she seems to be writing for. Bold and brave women are the rule. A reversal of masculine and feminine roles is not unusual. In Lanval a randy lady faerie queen, a pucelle, and her female knights completely overpower King Arthur and his court in a bloodless but completely effective rescue mission of a wrongly accused knight. The accuser is Arthur's queen, Guenivere is not named specifically, who definitely shows us her dark side.
I recommend this book to almost all readers, and certainly to anyone interested in the middle ages, courtly love, Arthurian legends, or women's literature.
Twelfth Century Lais can't be wrong!.......1999-12-09
The Lais of Marie de France is a wonderful collection of some of the best lais known to man! We were asked to read this book for my World Masterpieces class, and I must say that I'm glad that I did. Although many of the lais are short in length, you gain a valuable understanding of the way of life in ancient France as well as helpful knowledge for problems you may have in the love department.

ASIN: 1853994162 |
Book Description
This is a title in the Bristol Classical Press French Texts series, in French with English notes, vocabulary and introduction. Marie de France occupies a unique place in the history of literature as one of the earliest female writers of medieval Europe. In the second half of the 12th century she composed 12 poems, known as the "Lais", which offer a blend of romance and realism. Through these poems it is possible to gain an understanding of feudal society and glimpse the problems which beset both male and female members of the aristocracy at that time. The collection was first edited in 1954 by Alfred Ewert. Professor Glyn Burgess has re-written the introduction and provided an update of the bibliography, which lists all the substantiated literary studies devoted to these poems.
