Revitalization Wildfire Through Preservation.......2006-09-04
For those who are still in the preservation trenches, the story of South Miami Beach's revitalization is a stunning re-invigoration! It is clear that the struggle to save inherent and classic beauty takes its toll on both skyline and people's lives, but the result can be profitable both to posterity and pocketbooks.
In another small city on the waterfront, one with less flamboyant but no less elegant architecture, the struggle is as ferocious and dramatic. One of the key South Beach protagonists recognized its parallels and potential early on - Geraldo Sanchez. Undoubtedly, within the next decade, reviewers will be writing in about the volume to be written on the saving of Newburgh, New York.
A guide for city managers and administrators in search for a renaissance.......2006-07-09
The book could serve as a guide for depressed cities in search of a path to follow. City leaders will find many things to copy, imitate and avoid.
A Must Have.......2006-06-21
I am a resident of South Beach, and knew of its history as a tattered slum before being amazingly restored to its rightful place as a world-class destination.
What irked me immensely was that I could not find any thorough explanation of how all this was accomplished. I had heard of the wonderful work of Barbara Capitman and the Miami Design Preservation League and wanted to learn more about them. Then one day, on my usual trip to Books & Books on Lincoln Road, there was "Saving South Beach" sitting on display.
After barely looking at the beautifully designed cover, I eagerly bought my own copy. Thanks to Ms. Stofik, we now have the full account of South Beach's salvation, told in a delightful writing style which is at once scholarly, intricately detailed, and gently amusing.
Not just a history lesson; the background of the residents, and the conflicts involving the city government, developers, and preservationists (and the detailed profiles of these players) make this book quite a read. It is hard to put down and most gratifying in the end. Included are rare photos, including of Capitman herself, and the incredibly gorgeous New Yorker Hotel which was tragically lost to demolition.
If South Beach fascinates you, you must learn of its history and this is a perfect way to start.
Saving South Beach.......2005-12-03
A must have for anyone interested in preservation and the saving of our national treasures. Stofik shows how one city, despite politics and special interests, revitalized a decaying past into a vibrant future.
An easy going writing style makes this a joy to read and Stofik's passion for historical preservation shines through.
Book Description
Ceramicists searching for new ways to fire their creations now have a wealth of options. Authors James Watkins and Paul Wandless, along with a group of distinguished artisans, demonstrate in detail how to build low-cost, low-tech, yet high-quality kilns. The plans range from an easy, affordable, and versatile Raku Kiln to a unique wood-fueled Downdraft Stovepipe Barrel one. These clever devices make it possible to produce rich surface effects from alternative reduction firing techniques. In addition to showing the basic procedures for using each kiln, easy-to-follow directions for many fast-fire methods unfold in color photographs: You’ll see how to achieve terra sigillata surfaces with direct chemical application, and how to do traditional crackle-glaze raku and smoke finishes.

Average...but can find same on internet.......2006-08-14
I was disappointed in this book as most of what is in it, you can find on the internet, and usually better information. It will make a pretty edition to my pottery library but I had hoped for more.

Over the years, potters have embraced and adapted these methods, celebrating the remarkable but unpredictable results achieved using raku techniques. Irene Poulton, who has specialized in raku firing for over 20 years, considers the origins of raku before offering 300 glaze recipes. A selection of other potters also share their ideas. With 100 color photos of raku-fired pieces, this is an outstanding source of information and inspiration for all potters.

Great raku information.......2005-09-10
This is his second book I bought. I thought that this book would repeat a lot of the information in the first book, but to my surprise the book had a lot of new information and new pictures. This book is worth taking an evening to read it cover to cover. This is a great edition to his first book.

Raku: A Practical Approach.......2006-01-15
A complete resource for raku firing. Specific technical information for kiln construction, as well as photos, glaze recipes and much discussion about experimental materials for reduction. If you had only one book to learn about raku tecniques, this should be the one.
The Second Raku Bible.......2002-11-30
This is the second Raku Bible that I have used and referred to repeatedly over the years. There is a short section on what Raku is and the history of Raku, but then it quickly moves into the guts of technical information on Raku. Branfman includes clay recipes (for those who are interested in actually mixing clay) and several glaze recipes with some details on how they perform.
The real meat of the book is on kilns, building kilns, and firing a Raku kiln. Branfman covers firing in both an electric and a gas kiln. He also details many plans and techniques for building your own Raku kiln. Branfman also details many variations of firing methods including reduction firing, piece removal, and post firing reduction methods. Sprinkled throughout the book are great examples of finished pieces using many different styles and techniques that I have used as a repeated source of inspiration. Overall, the book is a very excellent text that covers the practical aspect of the Raku art form.
Easy reading, filled with detailed information.......2001-08-26
Recently I got the idea of replacing my current electric kiln, and converting the old kiln to a gas-fired rake kiln. I posted a question on the ClayArt mailing list asking for advice on how to do this. Every single reply refered me to Steve Branfman's book! I quickly bought a copy, and found it to be every bit as good as advertised. In an readable, conversational style, Steve covers a wide range of topics, including some history, glaze formulations, types of kilns, firing advice, and health & safety. Where needed, he gives very detailed and specific technical information (the section on determining BTU requirements for burners was *exactly* what I needed). He also provides great recommendations on sources and suppliers. For anyone who wants to get started, or go further, with raku, this is a great book.
Raku A Practical Approach.......2000-05-13
A very good resource for anyone who is interested in the Raku process. I would not recommend this book for novice Raku artists because of the technical terms used in the book. The author does expect you to know varios technical terms. I found this book very hepful to me as I have been a Raku artist for 2 years. This book is easy to read and the photos are great. There are also a few glaze recipes that I enjoyed experimenting with.
This is one of the most complete books on raku I have seen........1997-09-27
I have been a potter for many years and recently decided to build a studio with a kiln in my home. This book was of immense help. It gives detailed instructions and ideas for every aspect of raku from building a kiln (many choices) to mixing glazes and clays, designing a studio, teaching a workshop to health and safety concerns. It has much more practical information than any other book on raku that I have seen. As the author states in the beginning of the book, though, it is not for the novice. He assumes you already have a fundamental knowledge of the art of ceramics. I have recommended it many times to other potters. Margaret Gooding

There is a marrying of ideas, process, and action in Raku that creates some of the most exciting forms of contemporary clay art. Raku: Investigations into Fire is a comprehensive study of this popular ceramic process. Its history is traced from its earliest beginnings in Japanese ritual to current preoccupations dealing with the relationship of clay, artist, and fire. The history of Raku provides a framework for understanding the most recent developments in materials and technology, while an analysis of design illuminates the ways in which new ideas are developed. There is also an extensive examination of the methods of generating the rich and seductive surfaces, as well as the most recent innovations in technology and process-all beautifully illustrated with 200 fine color photographs. This is an ideal book for both the beginner and the experienced practitioner.
Customer Reviews:
A "Must have" book.......2000-05-10
This book is well written by someone who obviously know their subject well. Easy to read and well illustrated. The book takes the reader on a journey from the beginng of the Raku process in Japan right through to the modern adaptions of the western world. The many examples shown are by some well known and some not so well known exponents of this exciting method of firing ceramics. The author gives recipes and showns some results of different ways of reduction.
The fantastic colour photographs alone are worth the price of the book. I would recommend this to every teacher of ceramics and a must have for every student.

Book Description
The remarkable Allen sisters of Deerfield, Massachusetts, Frances (1854-1941) and Mary (1859-1941), overcame challenges presented by their progressive deafness, gender and rural isolation to earn international recognition as two of the foremost American women photographers. Working within the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Movement, the Allen sisters created exquisite photographs for turn-of-the-century exhibitions and publications. Their compelling, idealized photographs of country scenes, romanticized figure and child studies, and exquisite landscapes of New England, Great Britain, and California, have now been painstakingly catalogued and celebrated in this book.
The Allen Sisters, based largely on new or long-unseen material, is meticulously researched and well-written. Suzanne Flynt's illustrated biography is followed by 100 tritone plates and 40 duotone images.
Customer Reviews:
inspirational.......2002-09-06
Finally, an introduction to these two Deerfield MA sisters who turned to photography as a trade when deafness interfered with teaching careers. At a time when women weren't commonly professional photographers, they were able to successfully support themselves with commercial sales of pictures which were sensitive and artistic at the same time as marketable. Flynt gives us a detailed biography, many illustrations, and a hundred full-page plates of their beautiful photographs. The foreword is rich in detail about other women photographers of the time. This book is informative specifically about two women succeeding in their career, but also about the development of photography as an art form, the idealization of rural life culturally, and the political nuances of feminism at that point in time. Readers will be happy to have made acquaintance with the Allen sisters and savored their bucolic, charming, and tranquil pictures of life, specifically of children and their simple pleasures. Flynt has done an admirable job presenting the hard work of the Allens that resulted in such delicate images.
The Allen Sisters: Pictoral Photographers 1885-1920.......2002-07-05
Rare is it that any photographic book captures the imagination as does this book. The Allen sisters tale of woe school teachers gone deaf to becoming world renowned photographers from the Arts & Crafts movement is quite the metamorphises. Long and short of it this book is a testament to the strength of character of these women as they overcome lives chalanges to embrace their fullest potential in an era when women couldn't even vote. Kudos Ms. Flynt for collecting the best collection of Allen sisters photographs I've ever seen and writing, with annotation such a fine piece of literature. Ms. Rosenblum's introduction as in all her world class work set the plate for one of the finest Photographic books to be published in years.
