Book Description
This book provides a broad introduction to saltmarsh ecology, concentrating on plants, although much of the information should also be of interest to zoologists. Particular attention is given to the geographical diversity of saltmarsh vegetation and to the ecophysiological mechanisms which permit tolerance to the major challenges of high, but variable, soil salinities and of frequently waterlogged soils. The importance of saltmarshes as functioning ecosystems is discussed and issues relevant to the long term conservation and management of saltmarshes are considered. "Saltmarch Ecology" will be useful to upper level undergraduates and wetland scientists.

Description:
A microcosm experiment was conducted using a replicated factorial design to determine if a benthic fish modifies the effects of sediment-bound contaminants (diesel fuel and two levels of a Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg and Cd mixture) on saltmarsh benthic primary producers and consumers. The naked goby, Gobiosoma bosc, a burrowing fish that preys on small macrofauna, was added to experimental microcosms. Goby burrowing and foraging significantly increased turbidity and disrupted the sediment surface. Results were typified by complex and varied responses with many statistically significant effects and interactions among treatments. Although G. bosc modified the responses to both diesel and metal pollution in invertebrates (but not microalgae), bioturbation did not increase or decrease the toxic effects of metals or diesel, and diesel-metal interactions did not vary in response to G. bosc. Specifically, G. bosc inhibited a trend toward diesel-induced increases in nematode abundance, and diesel toxicity inhibited increases in ostracod abundance stimulated by G. bosc. Diatoms, nematodes and the copepod Pseudostenhelia wellsi decreased in treatments with G. bosc. However, G. bosc lead to increases in cyanobacteria and ostracods and a trend toward increases in the copepod Pseudobradya sp. Our findings suggest that microcosm experiments are potentially poor mimics of natural systems without bioturbation. Conclusions about the direct and indirect effects of contaminants may differ with and without bioturbation. Finally, our work suggests that the direct effects of toxicants may inhibit or mask bioturbation effects that stimulate population growth of some meiofauna.

Description:
Australian saltmarshes are inundated less frequently and for shorter periods than most northern hemisphere marshes, and when inundated provide transient fish a diverse prey assemblage. We determined the extent of feeding on saltmarsh by examining stomach contents of a common marsh transient, glassfish (Ambassis jacksoniensis), in the Coombabah estuary in subtropical Queensland. We tested the hypotheses that fish caught after visiting the marsh (after (M)) would have similar quantities of food (stomach fullness index, SFI) but different prey composition (abundance, weight) both to fish collected before (Before) saltmarsh inundation and to fish that had not visited the marsh but were caught after marsh inundation (After (NM)). Sampling was done on multiple nights over 3 months in winter, when the marsh is inundated on spring tides at night only. SFI values of After (M) fish were significantly higher (SFI~12%) than those of Before and After (NM) fish (SFI~0-1%). After (M) fish also had very different prey composition, eating more crab zoea (>100 zoea fish^-^1) than Before fish (10) and After (NM) fish (0). After (M) fish showed a consistent pattern in zoea abundances among sampling nights, in all months, with lower zoea abundances on the first night that the marsh was inundated than on subsequent nights. This is attributed to the synchronized spawning of crabs resident on the marsh, releasing their zoea on the ebb of the second inundating tide of the month. Fish stomach contents did not differ before and after smaller high tides not inundating the marsh (SFI~0-1%). Experimental evidence showed that glassfish evacuate their stomach contents in about an hour under starvation conditions, further strengthening our contention that the stomach contents of After (M) fish represent prey ingested on the marsh. The demonstration of intensive feeding by fish visiting this marsh points to a potentially important role of saltmarsh in the trophodynamics of subtropical Australian estuaries.

Book Description
This book develops the mathematical skills necessary for the investigation of the increasingly pervasive codes used to identify everything from credit cards to books to supermarket goods. An important part of such codes is the check digit, which can point out when an error has been made, either accidentally in transmission, or deliberately in an attempt at fraud. Mathematics plays a crucial role in designing and verifying such check digit schemes. Beginning undergraduates and pre-university students should find this book both accessible and fun. In the process of describing the identification number schemes, the author introduces many fundamental areas of discrete mathematics, including modular arithmetic and group theory, with emphasis on their applications. A unique point of the book is the way it offers students the possibility of writing papers summarizing a given topic to improve their understanding. It also contains pointers into the literature for further reading.

Practical, easily understood examples of the value of math.......2001-06-01
Modern electronic commerce requires the secure, error-free collection and transmission of data. Basic number theory provides the tools needed to perform these operations and this book is an excellent introduction to the theory behind it all. The teaching of mathematics generally suffers from a chronic affliction. Where the examples are easily understandable they are not practical or useful and where they are practical and useful they are not easily understandable. That is not the case with the demonstrations in this book.
We all have encountered the ISBN numbers of books, the Universal Product Code (UPC) on products and most of us own charge cards. The simple, yet effective ways in which number theory is used to verify the correctness of these numbers is one of the most demonstrable uses of mathematics that exists in the world today. Furthermore, the level of mathematics is well within the reach of an advanced high school or first year college student. The most advanced topic in the book is the most basic of group theoretic concepts.
The book is structured so that it could be used as a textbook, and there are three classes of problems at the end of each chapter. A first set of basic exercises that reinforce the discussion of the chapter, paper assignments, where topics for potential short papers are given and finally activities that can be done in a group. The exercises are well-done and test the reader’s understanding of the material of the chapter.
This is a superb book on many levels. The best aspect is that it shows how mathematics is used in practical applications, where the background is simple enough for almost anyone to follow. Truly one of the best demonstrations of the utility of mathematics that exists today.

Book Description
From ruined Louisiana plantations to bustling, cosmopolitan New Orleans, Kate Chopin wrote with unflinching honesty about propriety and its strictures, the illusions of love and the realities of marriage, and the persistence of a past scarred by slavery and war. Her stories of fiercely independent women, culminating in her masterpiece The Awakening (1899), challenged contemporary mores as much by their sensuousness as their politics, and today seem decades ahead of their time. Now, The Library of America collects all of Chopin's novels and stories as never before in one authoritative volume.
The explosive novel At Fault (1890) centers on a love triangle between a strong-willed young widow, a stiff St. Louis businessman, and the man's alcoholic wife. In the story collections Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897), Chopin transforms the local color sketch into taut, perfectly calibrated tales of post-Civil War bayou culture. In The Awakening, the now-classic novel that scandalized many of her contemporaries and effectively ended her writing career, Chopin tells the story of a restless, unsatisfied woman who embarks on a quixotic search for fulfillment.
The volume also includes all the stories not collected by Chopin, including those meant for "A Vocation and a Voice," a projected volume that her publisher canceled in 1900, and three stories that were found in 1992 in a long-lost cache of Chopin's papers.

A Fine Collection.......2007-07-26
This book is a great collection of Kate Chopin's writings. Chopin truly has a way of portraying women in her writings much differently than society in her day believed they should be. If you read her works knowing this, you will come to respect her work the way I have. I believe that in a time when women weren't allowed to speak out on the injustice they faced in society, and the belief that they couldn't be independent sexual creatures, Kate Chopin was making a stand in her writings to express how complex, independent, and sexual they really were. She is an amazing writer and this is an amazing collection.
Story of the Hour.......2007-02-14
Kate Chopin's `Story of the Hour', was an interesting story. Not necessarily in a bad way at all. I mean you except it to go one way but it goes another. This story is about a woman, who discovers that her husband is dead, but she's neither upset nor devastated, she is excited.
Mrs. Mallad is the only character the author really describes, as young woman with a fair calm face. She could be described as very emotional. Why is she so happy that her husband is dead?
The story starts at Mrs. Mallad's house, she is in her room. An excellent theme for this story is `To be excited about something is not always a good thing.'
The strength for this story is most definitely the plot. It keeps your attention and allows you to see a different view. A weakness is the description; really the story only describes one thing, Mrs.Mallad. I think that the story needs to tell us more about her past life and what happened during those couple of years.
Overall this story was OKAY.
"The story of an hour" by Kate Chopin.......2007-02-14
"The story of an hour" by Kate Chopin was a good short story. Not bad, but good. It's about a woman named Mrs. Mallad that learns that her husband is dead. She then thinks she is free until certain events ruin it. Mrs. Mallad is the main character and the only one the author describes. She is young with a fair, calm face. She is also very emotional!
The story starts at Mrs. Mallad's house and in her room. A possible theme is to not get your hopes up. The strength in the story is the plot. It keeps you on your feet. For the weakness, I would have to say description. The story should've said what her past was like with her husband. Good or bad?
Overall "The story of an hour" was good.
Rich and rewarding.......2005-03-30
In the late 1800s, Kate Chopin set the literary world on fire with her now-classic novel "The Awakening." But that wasn't by any means the only writing Chopin did. "Complete Novels and Stories" brings together the assorted writings that Chopin did, before le scandale caused her to swear off writing forever.
Her first novel "At Fault" was apparently something of a roman a clef -- a thirtysomething Creole woman is widowed, and takes over the family estate. She falls in love with a businessman, David -- but he is divorced, and her strong Catholic beliefs don't allow her to marry a divorced man.
"Awakening" was the novel that outraged the Victorian morals and sensibilities of the time, and tragically ended Chopin's writing career. Beautiful wife and mother Edna Pontellier has it all: a wealthy husband, cute kids, beautiful house... and yet she is dissatisfied. So Edna begins dabbling in painting and extramarital flirtations, with tragic results.
"Bayou Folk" and a "Night in Acadie" are collections of short stories, centered in New Orleans and the areas of Louisiana nearby. Breakups, romance, death, marital dissatisfaction, freedom, racism and other still-touchy topics are explored in these stories, although bits of humor do intrude from time to time, such as the very short "Old Aunt Peggy," about an ancient black woman who astonishes everyone by never dying. Added on to these are a number of uncollected stories.
It takes a lot to make a book "scandalous" now, but in the late 1800s -- the height of the Victorian era -- it was painfully easy. There's nothing shocking in Chopin's writing by current standards, leaving her writing as a grave look at human nature. In that sense, Chopin's stories are truly timeless, and not just for women.
Continuing themes do run through Chopin's short stories and novels, such as freedom, social boundaries, and the restrictions put on women at the time. One particularly stunning story is "Desiree's Baby," about a young woman and her child who are cast out because the baby is not 100% white... except that her cruel husband has made a mistake.
But it's not nearly as bleak as it sounds -- Chopin's writing is tempered by her dignified, distant 19th-century writing style, and the beauty of her descriptions. ("There was the hum of bees, and the musky odor of pinks filled the air.") Those descriptions can gloss over plot events as grim as suicide.
"Complete Stories and Novels" is an excellent collection of Kate Chopin's work, and leaves one with regret that she didn't get to write even more during her brief lifetime.

A woman seeks love and the fulfillment of her essential nature outside of her stuffy, middle-class marriage. This book shocked the readers of 1899 and paved the way for the modern novel. Three 90-minute cassettes and one 60.

A minor masterpiece, The Awakening was a scandalous book when it arrived from the turn-of-the-century presses. With a heroine who found her husband dull, married life dreary and confining, and motherhood to be bondage, this revolutionary book is still relevant to many.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Modern Woman of 19th Century [50].......2007-09-24
Some marriages do not work - sometimes they commence well enough but people drift apart. In this book, the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, watches here marriage dissipate for nontraditional reasons - ultimately ending with traditional tragedy.
None of the classic reasons for failed marriage exist. Husband was not violent toward her. He was not demanding upon her. In fact, he granted her as much slack as any man of that time period would ever have allowed. He was a good man. "As the devoted wife of a man who worshiped her, she felt she would take her place with a certain dignity in the world of realty, closing the portals forever behind her upon the realm of romance or dreams."
Like "Wide Sargasso Sea" this entails the life off continental United States and customs of those identified as Creole. Unlike Sargasso's emotionally abused wife, Antoinette, Edna is 28, turning 29, and is just . . . just . . . very confused. Her 40-year old husband seeks to aid her in this time of maturation, but is really helpless. Beautiful and unsure of her previous decision to marry, she is wooed by others - all knowing that societal customs will not allow her to engage in illicit passion unless she makes a rash decision to leave her anointed responsibilities to her children and husband. What will she do when her lover, Robert, returns? "Do? Nothing, except feel glad and happy to be alive." But is this enough for Robert? Is it enough for her?
Of course not. "[S]he felt the old ennui overtaking her: the hopelessness which so often assailed her, which came upon her like an obsession, like something extraneous, independent of volition." Her life became a lingering heart-breaking bore.
She is neither free nor in servitude. She is neither chattel of; nor an equal to her husband. She is a prisoner of her emotions, not of societal constraints. She lives in a relatively free society, and is permitted to roam about relatively freely. But, she is not happy with this. Little can engage her sensibilities in this period of malaise which is constantly questioned by hormonal and philosophical desires. She wants a divorce although her husband did nothing wrong. But, in her days - the 19h century - divorce was not an alternative. Moreover, her husband and her society are Catholic.
So she had to lead the remainder of her life with self-hatred - about how she got where she is and where she is going with what she has. She reasons, "I am no longer one of Mr. Pontellier's possessions to dispose of or not. I give myself where I choose." And, so she shows the most demanding act of volition: suicide.
My Bantam edition came with a forward by Pulitizer-winning author Marilynne Robinson ("Housekeeping" and "Gilead") who wrote, "`The Awakening' should be read as a meditation on the experimental basis of romantic consciousness, the sense that the world has a numinous life that is addressed to human perceptions and that it has a meaning humankind is competent to interpret. . ." Robinson is correct, and this book is truly generations ahead of its time in addressing this extremely undiscussed topic of female self-recognition against the male's world of control.
A person searching for meaning is NOT feminism.......2007-08-13
I purchased this book for my son's AP lit class. He read it and described Edna as an angry woman not happy with her life. I wondered how that made it a book about feminism and decided to read it. Now that I am done, I feel very sad for Edna. Given the description of Edna she could have depression. She loves her children, but not always...possibly postpartum depression that is continually getting worse. I believe the things Edna questions are not limited to women. I imagine many men of that time and now get married because it is the thing to do. Pursue jobs they do not like, but must take. Have children because that is what is expected. I believe Chopin is questioning societal expections of her time for both men and women. Clearly Leonce is floundering. The rug has been pulled out from under him. He was following the plan and now it has changed. No, this is NOT a book about feminism. This is about an individuals struggle to find him or herself. About accepting responsibility or being selfish. I can't wait to read the book that is paired with this for his AP class: Memoirs of a Geisha.
A 190 page book that felt like 400.......2007-07-10
Among so many lengthy reviews, allow me to make this pithy with no apology: It is clear to me that this is considered an American classic not for any particular merit in Chopin's writing but solely in the controversy that surrounded its publication. If you're looking for a rich and stirring piece of American literature, keep looking.
A cutting edge novel for its time.......2007-06-27
If you enjoy novels that address the social norms and conventions of a given time period, this is one you won't want to miss. I was first introduced to this book as a sophomore in college in my "Women Writers of the 20th Century" English class. Kate Chopin masterfully paints a picture of a woman desperately seeking more in her life; a woman who doesn't "fit the mold" of societal conventions at the turn of the 20th century. Chopin slowly builds Edna Pontellier bit by bit, painstakingly peeling away at the layers and the facades this woman has been taught to put on--and which her character throws off with fancy free and terrible heartache almost simultaneously. Edna is a flawed heroine, but perhaps that is why the reader becomes entranced with her. There is a little of Edna Pontellier in all of us--seeking the essence of life; seeking love and freedom.
Ahead of her time.......2007-06-13
Kate Chopin's The Awakening gives an insightful look into the life of a woman trapped in a marriage and a life that doesn't befit her. The characters are very well done -- not all of them are deep, but for good reason. Chopin's writing style never ceases to amaze. I've read this book three or four times, and it never loses its power, its impact. There are themes throughout that give the story a deeper meaning. When you read it, think about the elderly widow and what she represents, and the young lovers. Everything means something, and it is all tied together very well. It's the best book I've ever read. I simply love it.
