Book Description
Although pitch has been considered an important area of auditory research since the birth of modern acoustics in the 19th century, some of the most significant developments in our understanding of this phenomenon have occurred comparatively recently. In auditory physiology, researchers are now identifying cells in the brainstem and cortex that may be involved in the derivation of pitch. In auditory psychophysics, dramatic developments over the last few years have changed our understanding of temporal pitch mechanisms, and of the roles of resolved and unresolved harmonics. Computational modeling has provided new insights into the biological algorithms that may underlie pitch perception. Modern brain imaging techniques have suggested possible cortical locations for pitch mechanisms.
This timely volume brings together the more recent findings, while emphasizing their relation to the discoveries of the past. It brings together insights from several different methodological areas: physiology, psychophysics, comparative, imaging, etc., in addressing a single scientific problem. Pitch perception can be regarded as one of the main problems of hearing, and the multidisciplinary approach of the book provides a valuable reference source for graduate students and academics.

Trouble.......2007-06-08
The Criss Cross was an awesome read. It keep me on the edge of my seat and turning pages. I admire all of Crystal Lacey Winslow's books - she definitely is the "Queen of Melodrama". I will continue to read all of Crystal's books in the future. Keep up the good work!
Nikkisi Ling is a half Japanese and African American. She grew up a fast life - without a mother nor father. She was forced to become an adult without wanting the responsibility. She had her sister, Noki Ling - also half Japanese and half African American. Noki was a brat with spoiled ways. She was raised with her foster parents until she became too promiscuous.
Kapri Henderson was Nikkisi best friend - until the end.
Ivanka Zamora is a psychomaniac who has serious mental problems.
The old cast from "Life, Love, and Loneliness" - Joshua Tune, Lacey Devaney, Madison Michael, Portia Jones, and Estelle Cardinale return with more trouble.
This was the most interesting, page-turner, and drama packed book read this year. Stand up and applaued Crystal for a job well done!
WOW.......2007-05-27
This book grabbed my attention from the beginning to the end. I was left speechless and in awe of how this author had so much going on and I was still able to follow it without getting confused. The criss cross was a trip and I enjoyed this book so much!!! This is the second book I read by this author and I have not been disappointed. Keep up the good work. You have a fan here!!!!!!!!!!!
Drama all over the place.......2007-02-11
I thought that Life Love and Loneliness was real good. But The Criss Cross...that's another story. For starters,it took me forever to finish.Second there was entirely too much drama going on.The story is all over the place. Some of the things in the book just didn't add up.It does mention the old crew but for it to center around the new characters it focus entirely too much on Nikki, whom got on my nerves through out the whole book when it should have focused on all of the characters.Although there were 110 short short chapters it really wasn't called for.
Criss Cross .......2007-02-07
Nikki and Noki are sisters who had a Japanese mother and an African American father. After Nikki and Noki's prostitute mother killed herself the girls were put in foster care. Nikki had the strong African features, while Noki could pass for Japanese.
Its amazing how two sisters with the same parents can be so different? From childhood to adult Nikki loved and tried to take care of her sister anyway she could; even if it meant selling herself to do it.
Noki was ashamed of her sister, not just because of the prostitution, but because she looked black. She hated Nikki so much that she didn't claim her as her sister. All Noki wanted was money and would do anything to get it.
This book was a good read with many characters and a lot of scheming and deception.
Crossed.......2006-12-01
Nikkisi Ling Okayo has seen her share of struggle. She will not let herself and most importantly her little sister Noki continue with their meager living situation. Being ridiculed and raped at a young age at the hand's of her foster parent, Nikki takes her small life savings and becomes what she so hated about her mother, a prostitute. Selling her body and stealing from others is not what she wanted to do in life but in order to help her sister out of the foster system, she must do what she has to do. Growing up and realizing that she doesn't have to sell herself so cheap she invites the most distinguished men into her bedroom and she receives thousands of dollars as an escort. Knowing that Noki is ashamed of her, Nikki finally takes the hand of one of her suitors only to end up with a trail of bodies following her and her life on the line.
Noki Ling has despised her sister for years. Even though they have the same mother and father, Noki inherited her mother's Asian features, while Nikki inherited their African-American father's. Ashamed of being black, Noki will not entertain the fact that Nikki is her sister. As she leaves the life that she loved with her foster family to be taken care of by Noki, she ultimately seeks the revenge that she has been holding for so long.
Criss Cross is full of dynamic hatred and suspense that has you are flipping the pages at a rapid pace. Kudos to Ms. Winslow.

I read some Pink Parrots books years ago, and it scared me away from the series entirely! I think it was poorly written, and needed a little, spunk! I hated Pink Parrots, but if you're looking for something to read, well I guess you could try this!

Description:
A phosphorus crystallization process for recovering phosphates was developed using a completely mixed reactor and powdered converter slag as a seed crystal. This completely mixed phosphorus crystallization process achieved a stable and high phosphorus recovery: the average PO"4-P removal efficiency during 200 d of operation was 87%, with a range of 70-98%. The apparent volume of the slag doubled due to crystal growth during the long-term phosphorus-removal experiments. The Ca^2^+ concentration, slag dosage, and temperature were found to govern the phosphorus recovery system for a given condition of pH and hydraulic retention time. The equations for the rate constant and reaction order were obtained by evaluating the model parameters. The model developed in this study was observed to successfully simulate the behavior of effluent PO"4-P in a completely mixed phosphorus crystallization reactor over a wide variety of operating conditions of temperature, Ca^2^+ concentration, and influent PO"4-P. Model investigations of design factors suggest that the completely mixed phosphorus crystallization process with influent PO"4-P concentrations of less than 10mgl^-^1 could ensure effluent PO"4-P concentrations of less than 0.5 and 1.0mgl^-^1 during summer and winter in Korea, respectively.

Description:
A numerical study of growth rate of ice particles in an array of water droplets (Bergeron-Findeisen mechanism) has used the method of electrostatic image charges to determine the vapour field in which a particle grows. Analysis of growth rate in various conditions of relevance to clouds has shown that it is proportional to liquid water content and to ice particle size, while it is inversely proportional to cloud droplet size. The results show that growth rate is enhanced by several percent relative to the usual treatment in which vapour is assumed to diffuse from infinity towards a growing ice particle. The study was performed for ice particles between 25 and 150@mm radii, water droplet sizes between 6 and 20@mm diameter and a wide range of liquid water contents. A study was also made to determine the effect of reducing the vapour source at infinity so that the droplets alone provided the vapour for particle growth. A parameterisation of ice particle growth rate is given as a function of liquid water content and ice particle and droplet sizes. These studies are of importance to considerations in thunderstorm electrification processes, where the mechanism of charge transfer between ice particles and graupel could take place.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book .. a must have for the serious computer scientest.......2006-07-29
This book is easy to read, and easy to follow with a wealth of information and hands on exaqmples that put you in the context in the right manner leading you to a better understanding of the subject matter. The author goes all the way from classical computing and its digital logic to the quantum computing world with examples in C++ that help concieve the inherent massive parallelism of Quantum Computers.
Comparing this title against others, this does stand out as a favorite for me. The ability of the authers to start from the classical and drive the reader to the quantum world flawlessly truely stands out; especially with C++ simulations described in the book. Two thumbs up indeed.
simulations improve understanding.......2005-04-11
The topics discussed are quite advanced. Typically these are covered in very theoretical books, that describe high level abstractions, with little in the way of code for the reader to experiment with. Hardy offers a different approach. There is still an advanced treatment of the topics. Where these range from cryptography to genetic methods to quantum computing and others.
But he gives you C++ and Java code, to simulate various systems. A great benefit in aiding your understanding of what are often research level matters. In which case, if you are a new researcher, like a grad student perhaps, then you might be able to get up to speed quicker.

Seven Stories Press is proud to release the first critical edition of Nelson Algren's masterpiece on the 50th anniversary of its publication in November 1949. Considered Algren's finest work, The Man with the Golden Arm recounts one man's self-destruction in Chicago's Polish ghetto. The novel's protagonist, Frankie Machine, remains a tragic American hero half a century after Algren created this gritty and relentlessly dark tale of modern urban society.
Customer Reviews:
Reading Nelson Algren.......2006-05-26
This is a wonderful book! Nelson Algren knocks spots off of his contemporaries;chiefly because he actually lived the lives of those he wrote about.
The language is fabulously arkane and is only just seeping into everyday usage. We now know that a 'mark' is a person about to be 'hustled'(ie conned and robbed) and thanks to TV poker we know what the punk has when he looks at 3 J's wired! Unfortuneately,we also know all the drug terms as well.
The plot is wafer thin and largely irrelevent-Frankie Machine kills Louie the pusher;his run ins with the law;his dead beat marriage and affair with Molly-O-;its the cast of division line Chicago slum dwellers that are everything. If you read this fishing for a plot to hook into, you'll soon get lost. But if you read each segmented paragraph as a short story in its own right that merges into a bigger picture;you can't fail to love this magnificent book.Dickens never had such a cast of characters to call on!
Dated novel that doesn't ring true on any level .......2006-03-19
I can accept that this book was a classic in its day and obviously you had to be there then to appreciate its shock value at the time. However, great literature should transcend the time that it was written in and should reach out and speak to future generations. There are plenty of novels from that era that do just that but The Man With The Golden Arm is not one of them. It is ponderous, turgid and lacks any sense of urgency and desperation that its central theme - heroin addiction - should necessitate. Situations and relationships are one-dimensional and cardboard-cutout-like rendering them thoroughly implausible. However, the real failure of this novel is in it's dreadfully antiquated 'hip speech', a failed attempt on the part of Algren to capture the street lingo of the time. Trying to capture speech patterns in print is a delicate task that needs to be executed with skill and precision for it to work, neither qualities which seem apparent here. Instead, it sounds false and clumsy, making the novel unnecessarily difficult to read.
Bottom Line: If you're looking for an accurate depiction of drug addiction in '50s America, you won't find it here.
Worth reading.......2005-12-27
I heard the title The Man with the Golden Arm long before I ever read the book or saw the movie. It's a beautiful, evocative title, but it also makes you think of something grotesque: a man with a shiny prosthetic. When I got older, and knew the story centered on a junkie, the connotation became even more disturbing: an arm jaundiced by the hypo. I was never much into addiction stories and Algren's book (purchased as a shiny new softcover back in the early 80s, when I was spending the greater part of my college loan money on the creation of a private library) sat on my shelf for more than 20 years.
It turns out that the book is quite a good read. Algren locates the source of dealer Frankie Machine's addiction in his WW2 service-he was wounded and got hooked on the morphine that eased the pain of his injury. The novel also makes clear, though, that in spite of his friends' admiration and awe of his Purple Heart, Frankie was no hero. A grunt's grunt, he remained three years a private.
While the novel tells the story of Frankie's several attempts to kick the stuff, what we get out of it is the tale of a loser in a community of losers, people the American dream has left behind: small-time swindlers, dwellers in fleabag tenements, drunks, and sweet girls who can't get a break Among the sad detritus of this universe, located around Chicago's West Division Street, Frankie Machine shines like a star, with his big talk and his talent (the "golden arm" refers to his sure skill dealing cards, which he hopes to transfer to playing the drums in a big band).
Still, his life spirals downward. And although the drugs are central, you can't help feeling that if it weren't morphine that did Frankie in, it would have been something else. At bottom, he doesn't believe he's worth saving; one of the achievements of the novel is that you end up feeling they're all worth saving, not just Frankie, but also his grimier fellows. Algren draws his characters with such vividness that he takes you beyond pity and amusement to pure empathy with their humanity.
No Work and No Play.......2004-02-27
I think this is one of the best novels ever written. People who say Algren romanticizes the poor have clearly not read the book properly, all he does is say they are human just as you. But describing them as low-lifes like some reviewers did, just shows that Algren's message did not come across. This book is about love for humanity. And that is ALL humanity, not just the part that's nicely educated and has a good job and doesn't rob you at night. One reviewer said that Frankie Machine should of just quit taking drugs and sought himself a nice job and everything would of turned out fine. How? Would Frankie be loved then, would his crippled wife be able to walk, would there be no loneliness and desperation. would it stop raining? Would it stop the El from going round and round? I'm sick and tired of people romanticizin' the rich.
LIKE A BLOW TO THE SOLAR PLEXUS!.......2002-10-30
The great Nelson Algren's powerful tale. A work of art. Chicago, down-and-outers struggling with their various demons. One of the finest of all novelists. Algren, as a human being, had heart, wit, intelligence...and it shows. Not many writers today can touch him, although I can think of one or two covering the same turf: trying to make sense out of this insanity called life: Charles Bukowski, George Orwell, Henry Miller, B. Traven (The Cottonpickers), Kirk Alex (Working the Hard Side of the Street), Dan Fante (Chump Change, Spitting Off Tall Buildings) et al. You might want to give N.A's Neon Wilderness a try as well, a terriric short story collection. Algren's books last because his words have meaning to us--and always will.
