An all-in-one book about paper and printing.......1999-06-27
I first read this book quite some years ago, and happened to find a copy just now. For a neophyte like myself, who has to work with different kinds of papers, technics and prints, it is a real blessing. Of course, if you are a trained professional on the subject, you probably already know everything it says...Anyway, if you want a book that's pretty interesting (and well made too), this is the one!
Customer Reviews:
Well-done representation of the spirit of arts and crafts.......2002-12-13
This was the first book on the arts and crafts movement I read, and I have only read a few since then, so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt. What I was looking for, and found in this book, is an overview of the arts and crafts style. What I like about it, but one of the other on-line reviewers did not, is that it uses arts and crafts movement as inspiration, and brings it into modern times. However, it does this without losing the feel and goals of the style. It has beautiful photos and tells you which elements of design in each photo is specific to the arts and crafts movement. Also, it not only has photos of interior rooms, but also of exteriors. Pictures of original elements are inluded. For example there is a picture of the "Gamble House" and Frank Lloyd Wright's own dining room.
I think anyone would like this book, but I would specifically recommend it to people who are starting out exploring the arts and crafts movement and want to see if they like it, or those who want a simple book that represents the spirit of the movement. People who are die hard admirers of arts and crafts may want to check out other books.
Arts and Crafts (Architecture and Design Library).......2002-02-27
I returned it. Not what I expected....pictures are not relevant to the Arts and Craft movement. Too many new designs in newer homes. If you want to get a good book go with The Bungalow, Americas Arts and Craft Home. This book has more to offer and better photos, inside and outside of the Bungalow.
Excellent color photos make this book a must!.......1999-05-07
This is a well-done book on Arts & Crafts Movement exteriors, interiors, details and finishes. Over eighty beautifully shot color photos show buildings, furniture, and decorative details of the Movements style, and what makes it so warm and appealing. Anyone who is a fan of the Movement, and especially anyone considering remodeling or building an Arts & Crafts style home should have this book for the pictures alone.

Book Description
French Popular Lithographic Imagery, 1815-1870 will reproduce in twelve volumes approximately 5000 nineteenth-century lithographs from the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale.
In Volume 11: Pinups and Erotica, Beatrice Farwell has collected more than three hundred lithographs showing women as passive, erotic objects. Inexpensive and ephemeral, these sujets gracieux decorated the walls of brothels and were sold to a large bachelor market free from the strictures of family values. While numerous fantasies from this genre have been enshrined in modernist painting, Professor Farwell's effort to catalog everyday representations demonstrates the large degree to which these powerful images circulated in popular culture.

Book Description
One of the main appeals of wildlife art is its meticulous attention to detail. Dense fur, rough antlers, shiny feathers--these are the kinds of tactile characteristics animal artists strive to paint realistically.
Award-winning wildlife artist Rod Lawrence de-mystifies the process for painting each of the varied textures of wildlife in 50 mini-demonstrations. Techniques are shown for painting in acrylic, watercolor or oil. Artists will discover how to:
* paint hair and feather textures as they change on different parts of the animal's body, or through the seasons
* render expressive reflections in the eyes of birds and fishes
* learn the differences between the shape and texture of horns and antlers
* paint convincingly moist muzzles, scaly feet, soft ears and other distinctive animal features
Anyone can benefit from Lawrence's years of experience of observing and painting in the field. His instruction gives that essential "spark" needed to breathe life into every work of wildlife art.
Customer Reviews:
Could have done better on the illustrations !.......2003-04-16
I bought this book based on the review and on the sample pages in the hope it would help me to improve my technique in painting wild animals. To be honest I was rather disappointed when I first opened the book. At first I thought the book was meant as a course book for illustrators of wild life books, not painters, due to the poor quality of the illustrations, and the fact that in most cases they dont represent paintings but only details. I found the sample pages looked much better on the screen, especially colorwise, than in the real book (Paperback edition 1996, other editions may be better). My first intention was to rate this book a 3-star because of the poor presentation and illustrations. Take for example, John Agnew's book "Painting the secret world of nature" and you will know what I mean. After a closer look, though, I found Lawrence's book was not as bad after all, especially for the part on the eyes p. 66 and 67, the many explanations and usefull tips and the abundance of step-by-step presentations. Now, after having read the book through and having used it in the past days I feel I have to upgrade my rating to a 5-star as this is one of the most honest, usefull and inspirational art instruction books I have ordered. I call it honest because it really gives you what is written in the title, which is, as compared to other books, already an achievement. Unlike so many other art instruction books, where the artists use the pages as a showcase for their own art pieces instead of communicating anything relevant, you feel Rod Lawrence really wants to share his technique with the reader and does it in a clear, understandable way. It is usefull because you can really sit down and follow the clear step by step demonstrations without having to go through lots of useless text or guru-like nonsense befor you get to the point. No other art instruction book I have seen brings so many step by step demonstrations (50 in total), allowing you to see the steps to follow to achieve the desired result, making your painted fur or feathers look real. The items covered include : fur (long : american elk, short: bobcat, curly: bison), feathers (wing, speculum, body, head), scales, eyes&ears, bills&muzzles, tails&feet, antlers&horns and the different types of whites and blacks. The mediums described are watercolor, oil and acrylic, with a preference for acrylic.
Excellent reference.......1998-04-28
This is an excellent reference with a step by step guide to bringing out the most vital of details in animal art. The techniques, while shown in mainly acrylic painting, are adaptable to any media of your choice. A wonderful tool for the serious or amatur artist.

Book Description
Throughout the history of photography the genre of landscape has been dominated by male perspectives. Shifting Horizons makes us rethink our perceptions of the inner and outer landscapes we experience. Ten women photographers reinterpret the notion of "landscape." Using techniques ranging from historical non-silver processes to new digital imaging technologies, they are concerned with borders: between land and sea, day and night, inside and outside, public and private, absence and presence, space and enclosure, image and words; past, present and future.

Book Description
Essays on Microeconomics and Industrial Organisation aim to serve as a source and work of reference and consultation for the field of Microeconomics in general and of Industrial Organisation in particular. Traditionally, Microeconomics is essentially taught as theory and hardly ever an estimation of a demand, production and cost function is offered . Over the last two decades, however, Microeconomics has greatly broadened its field of empirical application. Therefore, this text combines microeconomic theories with a variety of empirical cases. The standardised microeconomic analysis of demand, production and costs is set forth along with appropriate econometric techniques. The text consists of four parts: Demand, Production and Costs (Supply), Market and Industrial Structure and Failure of Market and Industrial Regulation. It includes eleven new chapters with respect to the first edition.
